Big Air Kite Review 4 - 2024 North Orbit & North Orbit Pro

  • Here is the latest episode in my series of kite tests, comparing some of the best recent big air kites on the market. I was super fortunate to get some time on the 2024 North Orbit, and the upcoming Orbit Pro, so I gave them a blast and spoke about each of them, and their main differences from the most recent kites I have been riding.
    In the video I mention the high-quality new lines I have ordered from The Line Smith, you can order your own here:
    www.thelinesmi...
    I should also say that I bought my Duotone gear from KBL Sports and that they have been great to deal with, replacing for free my broken Duotone lines, and ordering me the other parts that have deteriorated so quickly. My frustrations with the gear have no way been a reflection on my experience dealing with their shop:
    www.kiteboardi...
    A huge thanks to North NZ for allowing me to borrow the gear for this review, and to my local supplier of North Gear, NZ Boardstore.
    nzboardstore.c...
    One more thanks to Cabrinha, for helping to get me on the Nitro from my previous video, I highly recommend watching that review as well because it is another amazing kite:
    www.cabrinha.com/
    As always please like & subscribe if you enjoyed the video, and follow Instagram for more up-to-date kite adventures, including my upcoming trip to Cape Town for hopefully some new aluula kite tests!

    I think it's very good that you're addressing problems with material quality. I'm just about to buy new equipment (my current kites are still from 2014-2016 and are just getting old), but I read the same thing about all the kites I'm interested in.
    North Orbit 2023 -> explodes randomly (in the latest reel of Jamie overbeek you can see even a 24 pro model just pop mid air in the background)
    Duotone dice sls / Evo Dlab -> same thing. A lot of stories were they just give up on the tube.
    I think it’s worth a discussion if the performance gains of the „new“ lightweight approaches are worth the risk of a potential serious injury.

    • @fer9-g3e
      @fer9-g3e 11 месяцев назад +4

      I think the orbit pro in Jamies video is on the flagline. It is holding shape and falling quickly. If it explodes it will fall slower.
      The 2023 orbits from a bad batch are replaced under warranty.

    • @MrCurt500
      @MrCurt500 11 месяцев назад +2

      Yes in the reel it’s hard to tell, because it’s so far away and it could also just be the kite turning in the wind.
      And yes there was a recall of the 23 model, but at least in the forums and on Facebook you could read that even some new kites out of that recall did break again.
      I just have the feel in general (without a focus on a particular brand), that with the lightweight design choices the kites are more delicate, and that’s not the greatest feel when you want to boost 20m high.
      So for now I’m a little bit lost in my purchases choice.

    Yes please for reviewing the OR 5s Flite. I have 2 Aluula Flites in 14.5 and 17. Best light air kites I’ve flown. I’m not a huge fan of Ocean Rodeo designs, but once you go Aluula it’s hard to go back to Dacron. I’m so disappointed about the EVO d-lab issues! I was going to start building my EVO quiver next. My buddy say’s his EVO D-lab 10m is the best kite he’s ever flown! Luckily, he hasn’t had issues. But his friends have had struts come apart while riding on their EVO d-labs! 🤦‍♂️
    I have Flysurfer Souls I use for water and snow, but with Aluula, I’m wanting to use tube kites for water now. I haven’t known anyone to have issues with their A-series Ocean Rodeo kites. I wonder what the heck is going on with Duotone.

      @@jasonofmontreal I was thinking afterwards that if Brands started releasing a 'Pro' vs 'standard' set of lines the optics might suggest one is maybe safer than the other, since that's such a primary function of a bar compared to a kite, but creating a specific 'Big Air' line is definitely another good way to think of it without implying that you're sacraficing safety by going with the 'Surf' or 'foil' lines.

    Since recently I was riding the Duotone Rebel SLS and I only had issues. Within one kiteseason, I had to replace the bladder of the leading edge three times because it was leaking and one time it even exploded mid air. I also had the lines of my bar snapping during a loop (during my second session), which luckily was not that high. I switched to new the Orbits and I absolutely love the kites and how high quality everything feels.

    Didn’t regret it, i am really enjoying the xtra fly speed and playful bar feeling so far.
    I never had any quality issues with core or the 3 pro bar. The slim and minimal design of the bar is awesome and they have some nice details on their products in general.

    Awesome review once again!
    After seeing your Insta post about the trust bar, I checked mine. Very thankful. I’d worn through the plastic completely and had worn a 1-2mm groove through the stainless steel bolt underneath. Centre line still was solid. My local shop gave me a new line and plastic piece (apparently they’re a consumable. Plastic peice is $20aud). I agree with you, it shouldn’t happen this quickly and hopefully they use a material with better properties next year.
    This is the first year they used a thinner line there which has the forces more concentrated and accelerates the wear. I’ll keep an eye on my bar in that area now and happily continue to.. trust.. it.
    Plastic coated lines scare me way more. I’ve snapped centre lines due to wear from trapped sand.
    Also for the y split, I’ve only ever seen it have an abrasive edge if it’s been opened and the ring shifts slightly.
    Never had an issue with the kites myself.
    Also, would love to hear your thoughts on the new rebel, pivot and hyper model !
    Cheers legend.

    • @jasonofmontreal
      @jasonofmontreal  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the good feedback... re the splitter, like anything in kiting, I'm sure the vast majority are fine, but it's just the risk of what if that you have to watch out for. The old V splitter is fine so if you can get one, I suggest swapping to it to remove just one more potential area of wear.

Innocent question: How much do you think kicking your lines with your board's rail, to squeeze out a higher Woo score has anything (if anything) to do with snapping a line? (eg like how you kick the line with your edge at 2min 33sec. I realise that is not where the lines snapped in your videos, but I'm curious). I'm not defending DT - you've convinced me to try a different manufacturer for my next purchase. They seem more intent on selling products and dealing with warranty claims after the fact, than making good quality products to start with. This is happening across many industries. I'm over that !
    So glad you and your buddies landed safely!

      I would say not at all, I don't do it that often, I just tend to over-emphasise woosting like that for these videos so the board is in frame etc.
      Lots of brands have had issues with manufacturing, particularly with new materials in the last 2-3 years so they are no alone in these issues. I brought up the line issues because I rated the kites the best I'd ever flown in previous video, and the breaks happened so quickly to a few of us. I still use my 3 dlabs are my primary kites btw, and they are still the best big air kites you can ride overall, just not perhaps for progressing riders

    I want to switch my quiver, as the gap from 12 to 9 is to big imo, to 12 Reach, 10 and 8 Orbit. When money is not a point, do you recoment the pro? I like faster kites and also the design of the pro.

    fantastic review as always, thanks a lot jason. I'm learning kiteloops on a dice which I think is ideal in terms of turning speed while sacrificing height, and I'm thinking which 5 strut kite to buy to further progress and get height. Will probably go for the standard orbit below 9m and pro for 10m and 12m, I'm a bit fed up with duotone prices which I think are a bit unjustified, while it is clear that these orbits are great. I also had an issue on the duotone lines when i tangled with a guy in Cape Town last year and all my four lines snatched immediately (he walked away with no issue).

      I would say 8m is kind of in the sweet spot between fast and stable... A 7m will get around faster, but it's probably harder to control, unless you're really used to them of course. I learnt loops originally trying them on an 8m dice, 9m vegas, and 10m dice in 2018/2019. The 8m dice was the easiest, but I hardly ever had the wind for it to I would get more sessions practicing on the 9 and 10.

      I don't understand enough about lines and friction and everything else to know... From seeing two lines in person either snap or wear almost to snapping right at the V Distributor I am sure that is part of the problem, but the second set of duotone trust bar lines that snapped was not at the V, and it was BOTH centre lines, so I have to say it's also the lines they use. They will be very similar if you jump in a more controlled crouched position, with woo however you can cheat yourself higher scores by flicking your legs up ‘woosting’. This movement not only gets your board higher, on some jumps it tricks the woo into over reading at times, so a 9/10m jump on surfr may be 12-13m on woo for example.

    Thanks for the amazing content! I’m a beginner kiter starting on progressing my jumps. I’m riding mostly a switchblade 12 and 9m, but find them to be a bit slow and very heavy bar pressure. Out of your amazing experience, which kite would you recommend with light bar pressure and possibility for progression?
    Also, anything with aluula that is worth considering?

      Well my wife is at that level as well and she loves the Reach I got her. It is very light on the bar and super easy to use and progress with. I think some other 3 strut kites like the Moto X from Cabrinha, or even the Reedin supermodels are great all-arounder and progression kites.

    I've always found your tests exciting and very objective. However, lately, that objectivity seems to be slipping a bit, or at least the headlines aren't quite matching the video content. The main focus seems to be the Duotone line issues and the Orbit hype. The Cabrinha Nitro and Evo DLab don't really get much screen time.

    • @jasonofmontreal
      @jasonofmontreal  11 месяцев назад

      @@nixon_capedr I know that North had issues with their 2023 orbits, but they did a recall earlier this year so I got my Orbit kites replaced for free, some of them had over 70 hours of riding time on them. The next video I did after that happened was the one on Duotone kites where I said I just loved the Rebel SLS even though I had actually seen a pro rider have theirs SLS explode on them while it was in the air on my last Cape Town trip, but because it wasn't my kite and I don't know what condition it was in, it wasn't relevant to the review. I also said that the dlab was the highest-performance kite on the market. That is not exactly a negative review and that video currently has close to 30k views... So because the recall had already happened by North at that time, there wasn't much to cover anymore that was relevant to the duotone review. I'm in the bar/restaurant industry, these videos are just my thoughts on the kites I am riding.

      @nixon2808 I'm new to Jason's content and I don't agree with you - it's refreshing to see how varied the kite brand range is that he rides and how clear he is about the comparisons...I have found Duotone dismissive with regards bar issues that compromise safety, the contrasting responsiveness of both North and F-One is impressive.

      @@jasonofmontreal all good, respect to your reviews. criticism of competing brands, in this case, Duotone, might be perceived as biased if you also have a sponsorship relationship with North. Hi Jason, got any tips for bars? I have a Trust Y bar and am now thinking of buying Orbits. The Navigator bar has a low V for the Orbit, but I read a lot of bad reviews on the Navigator, especially when looping a lot (safety line twist, no auto untwist and bad swivel for centre lines untwist and dangling depower). I really like the Sensor 3, but also a Y bar unfortunately…

      Ok, many thanks! Didnt expect a response so soon. And you haven’t had any problems I understand. I had no problems with my Trust bar btw but given your experience I am keen to switch either way.

      @@RebelwithaShotgun I think the first navigator version, or perhaps the first two had the issue of the safety twisting up inside the chicken loop if you only looped the kite one way, but I'm not sure that is still an issue on the 22/23 bar.
