One key point Mike left out of this very informative video, be sure to shout 'Nyeeeow' mid rotation to be sure to attract the attention of whatever Hotties (or just ya mates to be fair) are in the area... just make sure you stick the landing!
Amazing video - in terms of actually developing the 'advanced muscle memory'... I guess the best thing to do is simply a lot of large jumps with rotations whereby you have time to witness the kite and its response to the 'front' and 'back' hand pulls? Heading out to brazil in a few weeks, letz gooo
Awesome tips! I can only imagine the number of broken ribs from wrongly steering the kite while backwards in the air. Happened to me. Hopefully, you help others avoid this fate 👍
Great video Mike (as always)! I remember when I started with rotations and in particular transition rotations where the hand changes, I would have to tell myself out loud: FRONTHAND or BACKHAND so I wouldn't get confused. And I still use this technique. So glad to see a video addressing this because it has saved me some brutal crashes being aware of the hand relationship to kite position. 🤚🏼
Damn Mike if you only knew how grateful i am for your content. This is again one of the highest level and incredibly useful, thanks and hopefully you will continue for a long time❤
Hey Mike, very interesting topic. About the training muscle memory, here is what I learnt through being a kite instructor and this thing changed how I approach and teach beginners and it's making a lot of sense from what you explained: flying a kite (in a dynamic or static way) is giving an order then a counter order. So if you pull left, sooner or later you'll have to pull right. Then if you have pulled right, sooner or later you'll have to pull left. We can also say it your way: if I pull back hand (to jump), sooner or later I'll have to pull on front hand (to land or send or do a front hand heli loop), then I'll have to pull back hand again (if I went for a send). Hope this can help a few !
Made that mistake with accidental kite loops while doing a backroll a few times myself... did hurt, I must say... I was looking for EXACTLY that kind of explanation on how to steer the kite. So many people told me just to leave either the front hand or back hand off of the bar... never worked for me. Now I just tell myself at the approach: This is your front hand, this is your front hand, and BOOM! Thanks, Mike
Thanks for making content and developing the sport, Mike!💪 Lots of your videos have helped me progress.🙏 I’m still afraid of flying backwards when the rotation has stopped 😭. In these situations, I tell myself: "Don't panic, engage your core, steer the kite to continue the loop, and wait until the kite flies forward and pulls so that the rotation continues." However, in most cases, I panic and try to rotate my body like in late front/back rolls, which doesn’t always work out.😂 I think that stops me from doing boardoffs. Any suggestions on how to land jumps when you fly backwards and the rotation has stopped would be greatly appreciated.🤙
Niceeee, I started nailing my big frontrolls thinking exactly the same way, cool to know I was thinking like a pro 😂. Also sick content, love big air 🤘😵
I've almost been kiting for 20 years and I've successfully mastered this type of steering but my bad jumps start with me planning to leave the kite behind me so i can control the landing with my front hand but then in the jump/rotation I have already steered the kite waay to far forward which results in me steering the kite even further forward resulting in it not catching me. Any tips for that? It seems to have gotten way worse since is started flying SLS kites which are way faster and responsive.
long winded way to explain a simple concept. The more difficult aspect IMO is knowing where the kite is without looking at it. The best way me and my buddies have found is that if you feel like you're falling out of the sky, the kite is behind you (right side if you're taking off to the left). If you feel like you're gaining speed through the air, the kite is in front of you (to the left if you're taking off to the left). The best muscle memory to develop is takeoffs where the kite is routinely in the same place, then learning the timing with double rotations as to when to send the kite forward or backward.
#3 is invaluable, hollyy!! just getting into doing tricks while jumping, and losing control of the kite once im rotating has been one of my main issues, becuz i couldnt figure out why and how i was steering the kite wrongly into it crashing every time. with this logic, im pretty confident ill be landing those tricks finally! wish i could double like this video!!
Great video Mike. One question with regard to jumping. I have taken some videos when i jump and it seems like I fly my kite to far back. However, when I'm kiting it feels like if I don't fly my kite that far back I don't have any lift. Right before you pull the bar in for a jump do pull a bit with your front hand to stop the kite from flying further back?
If you aren't getting lift when your kite hits 12, and instead you're getting it when your kite is past 12, it's because you are t opposing the kite when it goes from 45 to 90 degrees, so you aren't getting line tension in the ideal way. So you've got to work on bringing your body low to the water and carving upwind *whilst* you're bringing the kite up, and then you will create line tension and lift during that part of the take off
Glad you find it helpful! I think it depends on the trick hey. None of the tricks I do seem to *need* it, but I'm open to the idea that it might benefit them. Will test in future and figure it out
Thanks Mike for making a video about this under rated topic, I developed so much fear after pulling on my backhand doing a backroll as a beginner and crashed soooo hard! This video puts things into perspective and will help me land my new tricks/crash in a more controlled manner.
This is super cool and helpful thx for another awesome vid. I guess with the last one not sure how well it applies when ure at the spot with gusty wind. Sometimes kite ends up on one side or the other whether we want it or not :p. Can u speak to that?
Then you've got to see where it ends up (forward or back) and pull with the appropriate hand. Just train yourself to think in FWD BACK and FRONT HAND BACK HAND
Thanks Mike for all these tips, very appreciated... I understand them all... but what can help me to understand and feel where my kite is? I can't feel it if it's at 12 o'clock or not.. when I do rotation with small kite (e.g. 9m) I always find myself downlooping or kitelooping unintentionally and too early. And you know... it doesn't feel good at all🤣
everytime I go in an unintended backroll either I finish the backroll fast and be ok or get confused and turn the bar midair to get rid of the twist which doesn't end well. will definitely try and work on your approach.
@@gethighwithmike I saw how much effort you put into nailing this video, making sure the concepts were clear. I understood everything on the first watch (even the forward / backward advanced thinking technique). So you should be proud of this content! Thanks again my friend
@@gethighwithmike It cost me a rib in mangue seco a few years ago. Exactly what you describe, involuntary rotation, pulling on the wrong hand, involuntary kite loop... 🤕
Never seen any videos about this topic and the approach is very clear and simple, Thx! Hope to save some ribs now 😁
Thanks Jeremy :D That's why I sometimes call these pointers 'secrets'

😂 you know the way
Is it truly a kiteloop if "Nyeeeow" wasn't shouted?
Amazing Video Mike I hope I see you next year I didn’t see you this year in Brazil I saw jasmine and ticka tho
sweet tips! thanks a lot Mike

Really good video and advice.
Are you doing any clinics next year ? About time I joined one.

Yessir! Would love to have you join 😬🤘
nice place, where did you film this video Mate? thanks for charing this tips
It's called 4CoQueiros and it's dope! Check it out here: instagram.com/p/C_Vv19aJ9W_/
One of the BEST videos, super master class, very interesting for me , this is one of my biggest problems with my jumps.
Many thanks for the video 🔝🔝😉

sounds so obvious, but needs a lot of practice, my brain just needs to muscle memory, anyway, thank you so much for this tutorial, very useful

I've just gone thru relearning front hand back hand, learning to reverse launch a paraglider.
Great technique, Mike. Hope I can do your clinic one day. Peace, brother
Excellent advice, thank you!
well said Mike. This will help many riders in their early stages. good job
Wow this is awesome advise. I have eaten quite a lot of shit in rotations so this should help massively!
This helps me a lot. Normally in rotation I was doing the L and R mistakes.
Brilliant video, many thanks
Another great video! Thanks 🤙
Golden tip front hand back hand no left or right

Great Video! I wish I could get some training with you. do you have any plans to visit La Ventana?
Thank you! No plans any day soon :) but maybe you could join a clinic some day!
Excellent concepts!
If I feel the kite moving over too far, I just pull the bar harder and do a double kite loop. Looks pretty sick
