  • Wild mushroom identification is what this channel is all about. Aaron Hilliard, mycology educator, takes us into the forest of the Olympic Mountains of Washington state to see first hand what kind of mushrooms are growing right at the beginning of fall. Some delicious and some toxic, Aaron will explain what the mushrooms are, some facts about each one, and it's edibility. We will also look at some of the breathtaking views and deep forests of the southeast Olympic mountains, one of the two main mountain ranges in the Pacific Northwest, one of the most diverse regions in the world for fungi.
Aaron teaches mycology classes at the Olympic College in Bremerton Washington as well as being the vice president of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society, and creator of Mushroom Wonderland(links to everything below). Aaron has had a curiosity with mushrooms since his early childhood and has spent every rainy season wandering the forests of the NW and getting to know all of the fungi, well, not all. Mycology, the study of fungus is so broad and relatively young, that it is unlikely to ever "know it all."
Pleas come with us on this amazing journey into a veritable Mushroom Wonderland. Thanks for your support and for subscribing.

If you’d like to dive a little deeper you can sign up for the 3 part intro to mycology course at the Olympic College in Bremerton. This is a non-credit class for personal enrichment. Aaron instructs the class in person, which covers what fungi is, how it grows, and its relationship to the world around it. The second class covers introduction to wild mushrooms and mushroom identification, and the third class goes over fungi cultivation and the history of mycological sciences and taxonomy. There is usually a foray into the woods for students who have attended the 3 classes. The classes are only offered in person right now, but they may be made into an online version soon. We will not accept any responsibility for negligence or accidental ingestion of poisonous mushrooms or plants. These videos are not intended to be a definitive field guide, but rather a starting point to become familiar with habitat, Everyone is encouraged to do their own studies, acquire literature or internet resources to safely and confidently identify wild foods before they eat them. When eating a new wild mushroom, it is advised to start with only a small amount, and make sure that it is fresh and that it is cooked thoroughly. Some mushrooms do not agree with certain individuals, and this is typically discovered on a case-by-case basis. All the ideas expressed in the comments should be taken with a large grain of salt. I don’t think there is any other field of study or science that has more misinformation being shared so freely and boldly. Mushroom Wonderland and Aaron himself have no opinion and neither encourage nor discourage the use of mushrooms containing mind-altering compounds. These mushrooms contain powerful chemicals and should be treated with a high level of responsibility. Any video topics on the habitat, natural distribution, and morphological features of psychoactive mushrooms portrayed on this channel are purely for scientific and educational purposes.

@@Hector-vx5yc That's the area I learned to hunt mushrooms in, right around Lake Cushman. My grandma lived out her last 10 years right up there at the t by Big Creek campground. The driveway to the right before the t. I spent my time roaming around in those forests as a young teenager. It's an amazing area!

Honey mushrooms are pretty good, except for the tough stems, which are only good for flavoring broths. Be careful not to confuse them with Deadly Gallerina!
