- Want to learn about those wild, trail-side fungi that you're seeing this time of year? Look no further! Aaron Hilliard, VP of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society, takes us on a walk to look at and describe a bunch of wild mushrooms growing trailside in western Washington. These magical Pacific Northwest forests are home to beautiful fungi, and autumn is the perfect time to go out and look at them, discover what they are, and find out if they're good to eat, poisonous, or perhaps hallucinogenic.
Aaron has been studying fungi for over 25 years and is a well known mycology educator in the Kitsap area. He puts things in simple terms you can understand. This video is for beginners and experienced fungal enthusiasts alike. Come along into this journey into Mushroom Wonderland.
We will look at Hypholoma dispersum, Hypholoma fasciculare, Suillus lakei, Gomphidius smithii, Xeromphalina, Amanitas, Lions Mane, Cats tongue, Zellers Bolete and so many others! We also look at wild running salmon and the largest tree in the area. Make sure to subscribe.

I'm the first! Hahaha! 😅 I hope this cold stays away a bit longer. I'm still finding good edibles in Skagit County
This is great! Really enjoy your videos. Thank you 👍👍
I enjoy walking down those trails with you as an 80 year old mushroom spore infused spirit since my early childhood in Netherland hunting for chanterelles with my dad. The excuse and attraction to spend hours in forests sniffing the air and training eyes to separate the ochers of fallen leaves from the little bulges that hint on a rising mushroom. In inner fusion and intuition. I enjoy your walks and focused views as my own photos are not nearly that focused. Thanks for the chance to virtually join you.
🍄
I live 5 minutes from a PNW forest like this, but wouldn’t have a clue what mushrooms I was finding lol. Thanks for showing such a variety!
Easily my favorite content on RUclips. I greatly admire your passion for mushrooms and how you educate others. Ive learned so much just from watching your videos and it inspired me to grab some books and explore more just for the love of mushrooms. I just wish I had friends that were into this too. Thanks Aaron! Looking forward to whats next.
Thank you for creating and providing this educational content Aaron! I very much enjoy your entertaining and informative PNW mushroom identification videos!
Such a beautiful Forest!! Thanks for showing the Mycena! All those ferns! Fabulous mushroom finds.
Keep up the great work Aaron. That is one of my absolute favorite walks in Kitsap. And one of my first when I lived here five years ago. Good job not taking Gunner. I have a hard time not taking my pooch on that walk. I’m gonna go watch the salmon there tomorrow. Mush Love!
Yeah dogs would tear it up for sure. They poop and pee too much. Such a beautiful area. 🙏🍄
@@mushroomwonderland1 Especially Black Labs if the one we had when I was a youngster was typical of the breed 😁! Out on a cool morning shortly after dawn to make a rabbit and quail hunt, our Rebel would often have already deposited four steaming 💩piles in the time elapsed since we let him out of the truck while Dad and I were hauling our guns, vests or game pouches, shells and canteens out of the rig and buckling on the gear.
Went to the show at the college yesterday, what an amazing event!
Magic forest walks are my thing bro
Super powers or.... an upset stomach. Haha actually laughed out loud. Thanks for the vids!
A rainy day in Astoria. I had a great time following you the old growth forest near Bellingham. Big tree was a treat to see as well.
I love these videos. I've learned so much about mushrooms
Thanks for the content. Just started my own venture down the mushroom spiral...please keep up the informative appeal. Very professional.
i found some psilocybe cyanescens earlier this week out near mt Rainer it was like the soil was calling for me. i was driving out to do a service call, and for whatever reason i thought to myself that i would see a deer on the road ahead. then 3 mins later down the road i see a deer and i thought to myself wow that actually happened ... ? it made me get a good feeling predicting that occurrence. now nearing the home that i must service i pull into the driveway, and another deer just sitting there to greet me i felt even more of a spiritual feeling. i continue to do my biddings and once done i return to my van to see a whole bunch of the little shroomies i now understood what the deer were telling me.
Really enjoyable . Kept me on the edge of my seat.
I find these type of videos very educational please keep making them! I will be vacationing in the Pacific Northwest next October and these will help me with my identification ty
I really enjoy all of our videos.
I love watching your videos! I live on an island very close to where you are so when I go walking in the forest (my fave) it looks so much like what you are filming. That's so cool cuz I've been hunting and curious for years but it's difficult to know for sure what I'm looking at just by looking at books with photos later, ya know? Anyway, I'm so tickled to have found your channel, thank you!!
Its nice living in Bremerton so much nature!
oooo. 60k subscribers! seems like this channel has had a burst lately. it's because of all your hard work. thanks for giving me something to feed my obsession on the off season ;)
Yes it's experiencing a lot of growth right now! It's exciting. Thanks for watching, I'm going to keep the videos coming.

The accessible information about these mushrooms you give out is so amazing!! Thank you for making this and putting it out here for free.
I love these mushroom videos Like this walking through the forest.
Thank you for taking us along in your wonderland walks. I’m in Ohio so I enjoy a variety of species you find that are not abundant here. Glad I found you and will continue to watch and learn through your videos!! 🍄
Absolutely fantastic!!! Thank you for more ground views!
I'm just finding out all the benefits of mushrooms. Thank you for making this video. I love videos walking these beautiful forest and helping understand the different species of mushrooms. Absolutely gorgeous! Keep up the great work!
Great video. Appreciate the information on the trees.
Thank you for making these videos. I really appreciate seeing the forests that you have in the Pacific Northwest. We don't have any trees that large here in Alabama. Your channel has been a blessing.
Thank you, absolutely love the videos I'm new at mushroom hunting, thank you for taking the time to take us along on your walks in the forest.
Definitely love your videos Aaron Have learned so much from since when ya started. Thank you SIR.
Love love the format thank you!
I love that you post these early because its nearly perfect timing for our mushrooms here in midwest Oregon
Love it! Please dont stop!
Thank you so much!
I learned a lot! Thanks
You teach me so much. A BIG THANK YOU.😊
I loved this and learned so much!
Awesome video man! I've been hooked on learning more about mushrooms, especially here in the PNW!
Very cool and very informative
Wow, so much great information! Thanks again.
Thanks! I just spent the day in Banner Forest looking for mushrooms and had a blast! Thanks for making the video!
I do like these kinds of videos, silent walking, and talking too.
It's all good!
This video with all the ID-ing is great education for me too.
I mean, yes, you're always doing the ID for us!
I guess I'm talking about the non-edibles...
I've got a lot of rotting woodchips, as well as a few fallen trees, so I've always got different mushrooms popping up in my yard, and many times I find it very difficult to ID them!
Every year my yard has different mushrooms who are new to me!
It's all SO COOL !!
I'm also liking the idea of the preserve where no humans are allowed to take anything away.
As a species, we're such takers!
And too many takers ruin a good thing.
Thanks for bringing me along on your walk! 🍄♥️
Love your video's , it's like we are there with you and the music is Not anoying ! You have helped get me thru alot of long dreary winters ! Thankyou Aaron ! 👍😊
great video! thank you
Great stuff man! I really appreciate you including descriptions of the plants and relationships between them and the fungi. I'm always learning something new from you. Thank you!
I live in Arizona where mushrooms are much less plentiful than my old stomping grounds in nothern and central California. I'm happy to have found your video to fill in during the dry seasons here in AZ.
Love your vids. In addition to learning tons and having mushy talks to view when our season is done in Wisconsin, your voice is soothing and helps me relax enough to sleep. Thanks ❤
This is absolutely fantastic 👏. You're videos are the best!
Thank you excellent vids been following liked and subscribed
Very enjoyable!
Epic run!
Been watching since your channel appeared on RUclips Aaron, and subscribed nearly as long. Hope you keep on producing the content for life--the balance of this septuagenarian's life at least !
I watch every video you put out! I live in the Olympic Peninsula, so whenever I get a chance, I am out mushroom hunting! Your videos have been so informative! Thank you
Love watching while I am working on my computer. I live in Kitsap and always wanted to get into harvesting mushrooms, but never feel comfortable about picking the right ones. Hope to see you on the trail sometime!

i've found a lot of amarilla mushrooms in the north east i've yet to find a parasol or amanita one day i'll find some! thank you for all of the wonderful information you share!
Beautiful forest man!
Lived here all my life and I had no idea there's a public trail there. I just assumed it was all part of the forest theater. I'll definitely be checking it out. Thanks.
18:58 love those amanita! Beautiful!
Loved the video. It's hard for some of us to get outside sadly but at least we can still see what is happening out there. I just look for mushrooms in the local neighborhood and I've been finding lots of stuff. Hopefully this upcoming weekend there will still be things growing though it is getting cold.
First Lion's Mane I've seen in the wild up here is on your video! I love to eat them after discovering them at the Farmer's Market this past year.
This is my absolute favourite video of all of your videos so far. I envy your environment!
Yes keep making these videos. I'm am at the entrance gate of the fungi world and you're channel has been a big part of my emerging interest. I'm local to the PNW (pdx) so it's really helpful see these videos in similar environments to where I would be foraging/wandering.
Lovely forest and mushroom walk!
My wife and I we're fortunate enough to purchase some Old growth forest in western Oregon. Ive been shooting some mushroom pics and video of mushroom. Watching youtube. So youtube suggested this video and its the best Ive found 🎉
Great, thank you!
@@mushroomwonderland1 I'm really curious about the camera gear your using. You get such good camera stabilization while walking.
I really loved this one! I feel like it would be a great intro for beginners and I learned a lot myself as well. Thanks for sharing ✌️
What an amazing forest! I like the name Big Tree
Good stuff. Very informative. Good photos . Camera shots. Can you do a show on Southwest Missouri???
Wow... What a beautiful place. I can just see myself living out there. Magical place. Lions Mane, and Cats Tongue..? Wow. I gotta. Or close by. Those trees are beautiful. I Also just found one amanita like that the other day and couldn't figure out what it was. Looked it up and i guess around here they don't have a real name or something ? Maybe you can explain why ? If you can. I would like to understand them more. Love you too... I have really good eyesight. And I love that last song you played. So nice. Keep up the good work.
Great show 🎉
It's a good mushroom season here in the UK as well as we've had a lot of rain!
Great presentation.
so nice
really good video. very much asmr
30:25
They ARE a great edible, Aaron. What they lack in texture, they make up for in flavour.
Yeah I should have clarified that that was just my opinion. I've eaten them, and I thought they were good! There's just so many good mushrooms out there I guess is what I mean. I do like them though.
I do like walking through the forest like you are doing. I’m in north Idaho so it looks very similar to where you are. You mentioned the burning of forests. Preventing all burns have hurt the forests as I’m sure you know. Good vid, Thanks
Great video
Mush appreciated - you educate by your walks, video and shares. I'm SOLD, I'll subscribe! You've helped me feel more comfortable in venturing beyond my own comfort zone, in what key indicators to seek out in potential locations, how to identify and so on. Many folks are secretive and I get it, but you offer instruction. I always look forward to the next videos.
Great show! I’m reliving my mycology class days at EWU. Appreciate the foraging tips.
here for the asmr aspect it's really relaxing imo!
I love your intro bro
I live on 14 acres outside of Hoquiam WA (coastal Washington). I used to pick Matsutake and Morel mushrooms down in southern Oregon. I’m very curious about the edible mushrooms that grow in Washington. Been wanting to go foraging on my property. Thanks for the video. I’m definitely inspired
Thanks for the video, learned a lot. Found a few Porcini's this week not far from Vancouver B.C. but they are getting a bit old.. If you want to see a really big tree you should visit Vancouver Island British Columbia.
Love this channel and makes me want to spend all day in the woods!
Is there a time of day that is better or preferred to go looking?
You're my favourite channel bro keep up the good work 🍄😎👍🏻
Thanks!!
Love the walking tour style. Keep it coming but add in some geography like where in the US xxxshroon grows.
We have a similar Agaricus Silvaticus here in the UK, it grows exclusively under pine trees and stains red when cut they are quite rare here in Britain they also smell pleasant!
