I need to get my 1987 Goldwing Interstate to the mechanic to get it back on the road. The look of the Interstate version is so much more classic and none of the unnecessary electronics. Literally. It doesn't even have an electronic clock, odometer, anything other than electronic starter.
I currently ride a '81 GL1100 Goldwing & a '97 GL1500C Valkyrie. Heavy bikes at a standstill/slow manoeuvring, but once on the move the weight disappears, mainly due to the low centre of gravity with these flat fours & flat sixes. Have no problems with brakes on either bike and regularly create sparks in the twisties.
Was great to see your showcase of a goldwing, you were both enjoyable to listen to your thoughts. A couple weeks ago I bought a nice original 1982 Naked goldwing and have loved it more than any other bike I have had. I liked it so much I just went and bought another 1982 naked goldwing to allow family or friends to go on rides with me. Both are great rides and so many people notice them and start up conversations. Look forward to seeing any goldwing time you guys might have.
Man, this brings back some stuff. After learning to ride on a 1986 Yamaha Radian, I traded it for a 1987 Gold Wing Interstate. I had that bike until 2005 and had only one issue with it (the alternator died). That reliability sold me on Hondas and I've been riding them ever since.
I had a 1980 GL1100 and a 1986 GL1200 and the brakes on both were fine. I've now got a 2000 GL1500, and the the brakes on that are seriously sketchy. I think they need a little work.
Josh always has battery issues. I love lithium batteries. No corrosion, no explosive hydrogen gas, 3-5 times longer life, charge in minutes vs hours, lighter, longer warranty, increased CCA over lead Acid, no trickle charger needed, deep cycle crank(full power to 5% discharge vs lead acid dead at 70%)
I bought a lithium battery to save some weight on my Shiver 750. It was just under 1kg vs 4kg stock. The only downside is needing to warm it up a bit on colder mornings. On really cold mornings the first attempt to start barely kicks over the motor. Then after 2 or 3 more attempts with each one getting stronger it finally fires up. A bit disconcerting at first until someone told me that was normal for lithium batteries.
dude the steering wobbling at speed is indicative of very serious suspension issues. Check the head bearings! check also the front fork alignment, and the rear wheel to front alignment. My money is on head bearings though since she said the steering feels "lumpy"
Bought a 84 1200 Interstate today. Drove 120 miles to pick ot up. Rode it home and was in love a 1/4 the way here. Never owned one before and I love vintage. 44k original miles
86 aspy here. Bleeding the brakes plus new pads should make brakes work fine.. Something might be wrong with yours. Toss the air shocks for progessive 412 and prog fork springs. It really handles pretty good if you do that
I have the 84 version of this bike, love it. A set of new pads on all three callipers (disk on the back as well) made that front brake almost aggressive, It can stop pretty quickly! Check the headstock bearings, that can make it feel a little loose. Not a speed monster but I may have touched 190km/h one time with the wind in the back.. To get it to really pull you have to rev it all the way to 7000, 7500 is the redline. The only thing is that it won't lean over as far as my previous bike (CX500) as the exhaust will scrape the road. So I've had to adjust my cornering which is probably a good thing 🙂. Jacking up the rear shocks does help somewhat. My ride to work is 35 mins on a twisty road, love it! With some care that bike will go for years!
you gotta use the rear brake pedal.. the braking system on that bike works very well once you get used to it i will say that trick is, to step on the rear brake \( it does the rear caliper and one side of the front brakes, then as you start slowing down, apply the front brake too. then keep using the front brake as you come to a stop and get off the rear brake once you stop.. then use the pedal to hold position at the stop. they handle very well ride very nice and you can throw it around with ease once you get used to the way it works! have fun!!
Very true, right front disc on same line as rear and uses rear master cylinder. Found that out first time I replaced pads and had trouble bleeding fronts.
after having a V45 Magna, a V65 Magna in the past I now have a VT1100 Shadow. well I test rode a 2010 GL1800 Gold Wing and bought it. I also was shocked at how well a 900# Gold Wing handles the twisties in the mountains here in Colorado. If Whitney wants to ride a GW from this century let me know. P.S. the brakes on mine take only 1 or 2 fingers to stop!!. Even before I started riding I had always wanted an Aspencade.
I agree. Any GL 1800 would be shockingly nimble compared to the earlier Gold Wings. I owned a 2001 GL 1800 for a couple years and live in the Arkansas Ozarks. They are a complete hoot in the twisties.
I had an ‘83, and currently have an ‘87. I’m 35, and haven’t looked back in terms of riding anything new. I’ve ridden mine across Canada, and can’t speak more of these bikes.
A couple of things. First, crank that thing about to about 80 mph and grab as much front brake as your can. Do that 4 or 5 times to break the glazing off the pad. Or just take the pad off and sand it. Secondly, you always use both brakes when stop - ALWAYS on ANY bike. That is how the bike is designed. This allows you to lock the front wheel if you have to, with less effort as you get "power assist" from the foot peddle. Its actually a pretty good design. Secondly get that bike on a real freeway and have her roll the throttle on from about 60 mph to 90 mph. She won't believe how quick that beast is on a high speed roll on. I'm a little surprised at how uncomfortable she was at slow speeds. The older wings are easy to master. I've driven the maneuverability DMV parking lot test with a 200 lbs passenger on the rear. It is not difficult to handle at slow speed. Double check the steering head bearings, that maybe why she was uncomfortable at slow speeds. The fact that it wants to wobble is another sign the steering head bearings may be bad. For the best ride, make sure the suspension has plenty of air in it. Two bars down from max pressure should be good. I've owned a GL1000, A GL1200 and currently own a GL1800. Comparing the 1200 to the 1800, the 1800 is more difficult at slow speed because the center of gravity is higher. This makes it quicker into the corners, more sporting, but it doesn't just sit in the corners like the 1200 did. It also has a longer wheel base, so that makes it more difficult at slow speed. It also means you lean more in the corners. I'm happy with it, but think they should have not raised the center of gravity quite as much.
I have a 1994 1500se and cut the windshield down (mark it with masking tape then cut with a disc cutter).. because every time it rains you can’t see where you are going! Unless you have windscreen wipers 😅. Cut it in the ‘low adjustment setting’ so in the summer if you want to you can raise it a few inches 😀
Great video and I love that you have Whitney with you on this one. You two play well off each other. So where are you on , on Discord? Stay safe and enjoy the ride!
Gold wings are an incredible value-for-money will kept secret. New motorcycle prices are getting ridiculous. In Paris they use Goldwings as taxis. You will always get to the airport on time!
I have an 87 with 86000 on the odometer that's been sitting a few years since I got my DR650... this video makes me wanna grab some bits and get it rolling again. Though it is a HEAVY bastard...
I have rode the 1500 and 1800 and have never heard of brake issues like that. Please get them checked out. I have been riding Goldwings since I was 30. Someone told me that the 1500 was like an RV, great on the hwy and clumsy around town. I could see that when you are not use to it and it is a big bike. Now on to the 1800. Game changer. The low center of gravity is awesome. I scrap the pegs in the corners. Let Whitney take an 1800 out for a spin and the glow on her face will say it all. People told me about the 1800 and they said dont test ride unless your going to buy. I went into a shop in the middle of winter and sat on one and leaned it side to side. If you have ridden many miles on the old wings and did this you can tell right away. I ended up buying one without even riding one. I have since had 2 of them and 175000 miles later. Never a regret.
I have a 84 Aspencade and the front brakes are good. The caliber needs to be rebuilt. I rebuilt mine 2 years ago - mine started to do same sponginess, the caliber’s were all gummed up.
Lack of a speedometer I heard means front bearings are going bad, mine were, got a Speedo assembly from a gl500 had to modify and grind it and add a spacer but it works great
I own a 92 GL1500. I am 72 years old, did not know I was aloud to ride any thing else. When you walk in to a dealer with a grey beard the bikes that they show you are Goldwings. when asking about the other bikes they tell you the best bike for you is a Goldwing.
Fate makes strange bed fellows, Jack. I'm sure Whitney is looking back at her life thinking " Since when did the Fates figure some part of my life was going to involve Josh's frickin Dinosaur road sled.... and Why ???? !! ".... LOL . Stay Safe.
Thanks for confirming my similar thoughts. I've never owned one (more of a sportbike rider) but back in that era had opportunities to ride similar wings that were great functioning bikes with only their shear size seeming weird or intimidating. Agree the brakes should be check out!!!
Heya Spite! That trip to NC on the Street Rod didn't go as planned. 😂 Throttle cable broke in Atlanta and nobody had a replacement. Wound up taking a plane the rest of the way. The good news is that the dealer gave me a great deal to get me on a brand new Nightster to get me home!
My PC800 from the same era, and it has the anti dive too but not the split brakes. The brakes on that thing ain't right. Nor I suspect the air ride is working right. The stem bearings may need the slack adjusted. When a wing is right it is sublime. You can ride them scary fast.
@@bonesrhodes3762 Wings started out as Honda's top tier fast bike of the day. What I meant was with a competent rider and a squared away bike (not this one) they are faster than all but the top handful of sport bikes in their time. The typical owner just never stretches them out. The last gen is amazing.
@@MostlyInteresting the original Wing was envisioned as a power cruiser with a 1500cc flat 6 - tiz not what Honda gave us - the original naked GL was slower than the 69 CB750K thru the quarter and ONE mile faster top-end - while both those handled like toads, the GL was more like a BIG toad carrying a load of unsecured cinder blocks and was as nimble as a mountain cow ---- I am not a fan of anything about Wings Having said that, I would really love to see MotoAmerica add a class similar to the "King of the Baggers" just for ChickenWings - like the baggers, they would have to begin with the stock chassis and be limited to what could be modified - however, in this class they would also have to pull a trailer ( size and weight restricted ), have the little wife perched in the Queen, and be carrying a chihuahua
I had handlebar wobble at 35-40 mph on my Yamaha Venture Royale. I tried everything I could think of with no help of improvement. So I called Yamaha in Japan for a fix. Just loosen engine mounting bolts. Start engine an run engine up an down through gears several times while on center stand. Then re-tighten engine bolts too torx before removing bike from center stand. Yamaha said that lined up engine an drive line system. Following their advice stopped the wobble!!!! GW has same drive line system as venture. So you might try it?
I have owned 4 of these 1984 to 1985. They have stator problems if you abuse them. IE extra electrical. I have torn them down to bare bones. They can be fixed easily. Love my 1985.
12:14 you slowed for that stop sign no problem, nothing wrong with the brakes ,they did their job! Mind Gdwings were built to cross continents in comfort not stop/start canyon carving.👍 You could try brake cleaner on the discs and skiff the surface of the pads with sandpaper, won't do it any harm.

I just want to hang out with Whitney. Like just a super funny and interesting person. Spite is pretty cool too haha
you just want to lick the 🦫 🤣
Man, this brings back some stuff. After learning to ride on a 1986 Yamaha Radian, I traded it for a 1987 Gold Wing Interstate. I had that bike until 2005 and had only one issue with it (the alternator died). That reliability sold me on Hondas and I've been riding them ever since.
It's not really a ride on the raspberry beret without hearing the brap star War cry, "ramming speed!". Great video guys, keep it up
I had a 1980 GL1100 and a 1986 GL1200 and the brakes on both were fine. I've now got a 2000 GL1500, and the the brakes on that are seriously sketchy. I think they need a little work.
Getting 2 wings back on the road, after 10yrs sitting, both running great
You all lright spite appreciate you helping forgotten angels GOD BLESS YOU AND WHITNEY!
The Winnebago Of Bikes !! As always Love the content and Awesome getting involved with the Forgotten Angel's
It really handles pretty good if you do that
The left side front cliper is operated by the right hand lever. The right side caliper is operated by the foot petal.
And the right has the anti dive IIRC.
Be nice, kids...some of us have speeding tickets as old as the bike!
(I was in high school.)
And no one has mentioned Josh's Garfield still hanging around, lol
I like the idea that Whitney was born wondering whats up with Goldwings, haha
Just did 300 km of mountain riding yesterday on my 85, loved it fall colors and scents, beautiful 😍
I ride the 1986 Aspencade. Once you have had it for a while it carves corners very well. It’s my Sunday wind therapy. I’m 69.
That bike is epic! I've watched sooo many episodes of Shadetree riding the Raspberry buffet!
Good to see you two togetherr again, the Wing was, is and will always be a Wing.
The whobble may mean the steering head bearing needs to be replaced. You may want to check that out.
Old wings do that, always have.
Nsh, just old frame less stiff
you gotta use the rear brake pedal.. the braking system on that bike works very well once you get used to it i will say that trick is, to step on the rear brake \( it does the rear caliper and one side of the front brakes, then as you start slowing down, apply the front brake too. then keep using the front brake as you come to a stop and get off the rear brake once you stop.. then use the pedal to hold position at the stop. they handle very well ride very nice and you can throw it around with ease once you get used to the way it works!
My dad has a GL1500 Wing and I’ve rode on the back with him. I weighed about 250-260 at the time, can confirm, it’ll carry anyone and anything 😂😂😂
If you're worried about how many butts have sat on the Goldwing, think of any chair in the waiting room of your local gastroenterologist.
It’s clear that Spite, INC has not hired a Risk Manager yet
Great video and I love that you have Whitney with you on this one. You two play well off each other. So where are you on , on Discord? Stay safe and enjoy the ride!
Gold wings are an incredible value-for-money will kept secret. New motorcycle prices are getting ridiculous. In Paris they use Goldwings as taxis. You will always get to the airport on time!
My 1981 GL 1100 has about 150K miles on her and she has been fantastic. Bought her brand new. She looks great and runs great
If I win the bike can I force you to drive it to my place only to then donate it right back and force you to drive it back? I live in Canada btw.
If I buy a couple tickets I can raise the probability of a multinational tour?! The Canadian Adams have spoken!
The front brakes need better pads, if he put a refurbished battery in it he probably put the cheapest pads on too.
12:07 Love the full stop. Is that a Texas stop?
I have a Concour14. Its SMOOTH on the highway to stupidly fast speeds, but on big bikes ya need A LOT of low speed parking lot practice.
I'm just up the road in Temple, it will be pretty easy for me to pick it up when I win!
That car is missing 2 wheels
I have a 84 Aspencade and the front brakes are good. The caliber needs to be rebuilt. I rebuilt mine 2 years ago - mine started to do same sponginess, the caliber’s were all gummed up.
---- I can understand giving away a ChickenWing: I can't understand wanting to be given a ChickenWing
I love Whitney's dissertation she should have her own channel and a Goldwing but not that one 😁
Love when you two get together.
The stories Garfield could tell if he could talk with their amount of time he’s been on that bike
Lack of a speedometer I heard means front bearings are going bad, mine were, got a Speedo assembly from a gl500 had to modify and grind it and add a spacer but it works great
Ah man love it! Picking my kid up on the motorcycle is the best!
So.. I've owned an 86 1200 and own an 88 1500, I've watched many videos on wings.. and this one is tops !!
What are the gloves Spite is wearing? You can see them at 5:46
Got a 90'se. If you like the four, you will love the six. You can buy 10 old ones for the price of a new one.
“It’s got vents for your kneecaps, I guess” 😂
I own a 92 GL1500. I am 72 years old, did not know I was aloud to ride any thing else. When you walk in to a dealer with a grey beard the bikes that they show you are Goldwings. when asking about the other bikes they tell you the best bike for you is a Goldwing.
Wait where’s the giveaway link? I can’t tell if it’s not there or if I’m just blind 😂
I think the giveaway link is just avoiding your mouse click.
I forgot it. It's in there now
Fate makes strange bed fellows, Jack. I'm sure Whitney is looking back at her life thinking " Since when did the Fates figure some part of my life was going to involve Josh's frickin Dinosaur road sled.... and Why ???? !! ".... LOL .
Stay Safe.
Whitney is absolutely priceless 😂
Thanks for confirming my similar thoughts. I've never owned one (more of a sportbike rider) but back in that era had opportunities to ride similar wings that were great functioning bikes with only their shear size seeming weird or intimidating. Agree the brakes should be check out!!!
Owned a 1978 1000, 81 1100, 84 1200, loved every one. Wish i never sold the 1200.
The old Goldwings sure do have character. I'm not certain its good character, but it's something! 😁
I have a morbid desire to turn one into a cafe bike or better yet a ratty bobber.
Most of those bits and bobs can be fixed, This is a bike for a competent fixer of stuff.
Just wondering if the breaks and speedo ect…. Will be repaired before the giveaway?
Steering a GW into a corner isn't so much an action, more of a suggestion.
Love my Goldwing. It’s an 83 GL1100, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Heya Spite! That trip to NC on the Street Rod didn't go as planned. 😂 Throttle cable broke in Atlanta and nobody had a replacement. Wound up taking a plane the rest of the way. The good news is that the dealer gave me a great deal to get me on a brand new Nightster to get me home!
Owned a1200 they had some with stator issues.
The wobble is most likely steering head issues. Great bikes
My PC800 from the same era, and it has the anti dive too but not the split brakes. The brakes on that thing ain't right. Nor I suspect the air ride is working right. The stem bearings may need the slack adjusted. When a wing is right it is sublime. You can ride them scary fast.
"You can ride them scary fast."
---- sounds like a Carlin skit of words you don't don't normally hear strung together in context with a ChickenWIng
@@bonesrhodes3762 Wings started out as Honda's top tier fast bike of the day. What I meant was with a competent rider and a squared away bike (not this one) they are faster than all but the top handful of sport bikes in their time. The typical owner just never stretches them out. The last gen is amazing.
@@MostlyInteresting the original Wing was envisioned as a power cruiser with a 1500cc flat 6 - tiz not what Honda gave us - the original naked GL was slower than the 69 CB750K thru the quarter and ONE mile faster top-end - while both those handled like toads, the GL was more like a BIG toad carrying a load of unsecured cinder blocks and was as nimble as a mountain cow ---- I am not a fan of anything about Wings
Having said that, I would really love to see MotoAmerica add a class similar to the "King of the Baggers" just for ChickenWings - like the baggers, they would have to begin with the stock chassis and be limited to what could be modified - however, in this class they would also have to pull a trailer ( size and weight restricted ), have the little wife perched in the Queen, and be carrying a chihuahua
My next Goldwing will 100% be named doohickey museum.
My Guzzi LeMans II (and I think all Guzzis back then) had linked braking. Absolutely brilliant, and some of the best braking of the day.
Kinda makes me nostalgic for my 86' two tone blue Honda Aspencade!
leaning forward helps on cruiser bikes if your cornering, especially at slower speeds.
When is the drawing for this? I've been trying to buy a ticket for each seperate giveaway lol
