  • In 1994 Nintendo released a remake of their iconic 1981 arcade game, Donkey Kong. But was it as simple as that, or was there more to this game than met the eye?

Loved this game as a kid. It was just so much more than I expected and so different from anything else. Never beat it unfortunately, but I have such fond memories.

Man, I played this game SOOOOOO much as a kid. I was furious when my save battery gave out as I got to the final boss, so years later when I got a new battery installed (Took me a while from sheer anger) it was SO intensely satisfying to finally beat it. I'm stunned how well this game holds up in terms of sheer mechanics.

This was one of the few games that I’d get to compete with my sister. Each day we’d pass the game to each other and it was so fun to see how much farther she got compared to me

as a 96 kid, I never knew this existed and even if I did, would have assumed its just a simple clone. Thanks a bunch for showing it off!

I love that game, played so much of it. It needs a proper HD remake.

This game…besides Links Awakening DX and Pokémon Red & gold, this was my childhood with my original GB & GBC. Time to dig through the basement and see if I can find my old copy!

I had this on 3DS but my Microsd card died annoyingly. Really intresting game though with loads of content
And yeah, the Game Boy is awesome, I still use it sometimes😂
Edit: I casually try to speedrun 99 lives everytime I play a mario game honestly, you're not alone
Edit 2: Didn't even realise you were ill while watching the video, get well soon!

The Mario Vs. DK remake? I haven't played it yet! I probably will soon though.

The Switch game is a remake of Mario vs Donkey Kong on the GBA, itself a reinterpretation of Donkey Kong 94 on the GB, which was a consecration of the arcade game that spawned Mario and DK.
      - DK Arcade brought the notion of the platformer to video games. The level design and physics of Super Mario Bros. turned the industry around after the crash.
      - DK 94, far from simply offering the basic game, improved all its mechanics, completely rethought its physics, introduced the acrobatics of M64, and offered a hundred levels versus the original 4. Replayability was excellent, with a life system that worked in tandem with the timer, dynamically adapting the difficulty according to our knowledge of the trickiest levels.
      - "M vs DK" GBA simplified the formula by focusing more on puzzles than on precision and speed, and by allowing you to save every 2 levels instead of 4, making life management, at the heart of the title, almost useless and less challenging. However, it retained the notion of scoring for replayability.
      - "M vs DK" Switch is very similar to the GBA game from which it originated. The only difference is that numerous difficulty options have been added, such as the absence of fall damage, and scoring has been replaced exclusively by a timer mode for end game. The game offers plenty of post-game content, but may seem bland compared to recent Mario games.
The other M vs Dk games, including the "mini Marios", the franchise's mascots, focused on puzzles rather than platforms.
Personally, my favorite is DK94 on GB, with its balanced challenge, enhanced level and mechanics that work well together.
I'd even go so far as to say that I prefer it to the classic Mario games, which are still very good games. But they're very different games... just in the absence of scoling!
