Hi everyone actually I starched my crochet using tapioca flour. I crochet those tea cups (pattern from Bag-O-Day crochet) and I starched them and they're still standing till now. Tapioca flour is somehow similar to corn flour but it is a bit thicker. We in Malaysia mainly use tapioca flour for clothes and corn starch for food.
Thanks for sharing Zie Ruc - that is a great. tip!!!!! sending 💛💛 🌸🌸 to Malaysia - I. will look. for tapioca four and will. try it.
Thank you for this video. My grandmother passed away without telling me how to starch her beautiful knit and crochet lace. Now I can properly take care of the heirlooms passed to me.💛
Hi Natalie - my mom left me a lot of knitted doilies - some are large and like cobwebs. Yes we need to know how to take care of our heirlooms ❤️
It’s a snowflake in the middle and a star on the outside! Beautiful 😻 Thank you 🙏
Thank you too, Antoinette 🌹🌹
Thank you for making such easy to follow tutorials. You are a wonderful teacher.
Thank you so much for this video! It's very clear, step by step instructions for the new and clueless like myself. Your crochet items are beautiful as well!
You are so welcome, Kim 🔔 🔔 ❄️ ❄️
Great idea, I use sugar starch, 1/2 cup sugar to 1/4 cup water and cook til sugar dissolves and looks clear.
I bought crocheted baby carriages (I am showing them in my video: ruclips.net/video/YR8nezm9zO0/видео.html ) and the lady used sugar too, but they collapse - I think a really VERY THICK starch is much better - IMHO
Beautiful thank you, it never occurred to me to use corn starch, how clever! Thanks again, jx
Jan Kuhnert you're welcome... yes I used to starch this way shirts too, except that I used more watery starch (I used more water per 1 tablespoon of starch) .... and actually we used potato starch - not corn starch... potato starch is better, but I have to go to specialty stores for that product :-)
I really love your work and the way you explain your how to do this thank you from Diane
Hi Diane - I'm glad you like it, thank you 🌸 - I am working on a couple of new videos - simple icicle and another snowflake - look out for these videos if you are interested ❄️
Thank you so much for this video. My daughter-in-law had asked if I could starch her grandmother's bells. Of course, I said I would be happy to do this. (Not knowing how but knowing that I could find out how on the computer. I love the simplicity of your presentation. Thank you, again.
You are so welcome, Linda. 👍🌹

I have some starched angels and bells my memaw made and i got when she passed away in 2002. Theyve been stored and now misshapen...id like to know how i can fix them. Can i wash them and reshape. They are slightly discolored as well. Id like to get them looking nice so i can use them at christmas
Hi c f, My apologies for not responding sooner - if they are made of cotton thread wash them; if they are discolored put them into a stainless steel pot with a little bit of soap (oatmeal flakes soap) and plenty of water and gently simmer for quite some time. Do not bleach - a bleach could destroy the thread. After that rinse very well. Repeat if necessary. If you still see some discoloration wait until summer - wet your item(s) and place it(them) in the sun and let the sun bleach it naturally (keep wetting it with clean water). If that doesn’t help to get the discoloration out, you will have to live with the spots, but they may be faint at that point... After you are finished with removing as much discoloration as possible, starch it... use any tools you find around the house (or make your own of stuffed out plastic) to stretch/block your heirloom(s)
Thanks for the video!
How much boiling water was there in the pot?
+Maryana Stepanova - you are very welcome --- not much water - I think about 1/2 cup to a cup and a big table spoon of cornstarch - just play with it to your desired consistency... I did it in microwave oven once to speed it up - - - but boiling on the stove comes out better... the ornaments come so nice if it is really thick... some people use sugar water but that is not good... ENJOY - and thank you for watching my video :-)
You can stack a large plastic Easter egg and place the bell over it that works for me
Hi Dottie - yes I've done it too (long after I made this video) - I am always looking for good tools to starch my bells 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 thank you for commenting and giving some advice to others 👍👍
Would like to know...After this stiffened, can I wash it? will it end up becoming soft again?
Hi Ping. Yes, if you wash it it will get soft and you will have to re-starch it again 🍀
Another option is using Elmers Glue All...use full strength...excess with brush off after Bell has dried..
Linda, it is a great tip for people who make snowflakes and bells and angels - I have herd that one many times, but I always stick with my very thick starch because it never failed me - my snowflakes stay firm for many years if I store them in my shoe box.
Thank you,Dear..I've tried the sugar base starching but found it would cause molding...a starch base turned metallic thread cloudy..the Elmers Glue All dried clear and worked the best for me..thank you for the bell pattern...I use my crochet ornaments for Christmas cards and this bell really is a lovely design for this year's ornaments...you are very talented and appreciate your sharing with us with such excellent videos..best wishes for a blessed holiday...
@@lindapetersen379 will the glue wash out again? I’m wanting to temporarily starch knitted beanies into angels?
Pat Redman..I've never used Elmer's Glue All on yarn projects...I'm assuming your knitted beanies are done in yarn?..using this glue full strength turns thread into very a hard finish...very hard to wash out..good luck on your angel project,Dear...
I heard starch turn it yellow after time. Is that true? or if there anything else that can be done to avoid that
Hi Lolita, that is a great question - I haven't heard that... my crochet decorations are still pretty white (I use corn starch).... that said, if what you are saying is true, then I would just wash my decorations in hot water very well (it's cotton so it should not shrink much) - perhaps I would wash it 2x, rinse it well, dry it and re-starch it prior to use. 🍀
Thanks lots
you are welcome 🌸
TY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
t williams thank U 4 thanking me :-)
Dobrý den, Broňo, je možné škrobovou směs použít opakovaně? Když zatuhne v hrnečku po naškrobení několika ozdob, ale další chci dělat třeba až následující den, je možné škrob znovu zahřát a rozpustit? Děkuju! :-)
Jarko, dobra otazka - ano, pouzila jsem smes opakovane - obycejne ji davam do mrazaku a pozdeji ohreju - ALE delaji se zmolky, takze tam davam kapicku vody a pak se to snazim rozetrit... avsak nejlepsi je udelat bud malinke mnozstvi a vyhodit zbytek (pokud se nespotrebuje), anebo nejdrive uhackovat hodne ozdob a pak je vsechny najednou naskrobit (teda pokud mate hodne spendliku a ruznych pomucek na zvonecky apod) 🌸 preji vesele a spokojene Vanoce
@@HandMadeRukodelky děkuji moc! Mám tu asi 20 zvonečků a 20 hvězdiček, tak něco naškrobím dnes a pak budu zas pokračovat třeba o víkendu s novou várkou šrobu :-) Krásné Vánoce i vám! :-)
Oh stromecek/vyzdoba bude nadherna - ja delam kazdy treti rok hackovanou vyzdobu - totalne to miluji... manzel ma jeden rok a dcera taky jeden rok... takto stridame vanocni vyzdobu - kazdy co ma rad... ocenila bych foto vasi krasne vyroby
Hello thr. Lovely work.just want to know if we can use glass bowl to dry the stuff.
Hi Ammar - absolutely, great idea 👍.... glass is very smooth and even if dried crochet bell will cling to the glass, you can gently peel it off 🌸 thank you for your suggestion
Thanks for your prompt revert. Love from india.
Love back to India
How long does this last for
Hello wizzardofoz2012, This is a really great question 👍- because I make my starch super thick (and some people starch their products with sugar - doesn't last long, or Emerson glue - may last longer than a sugar concoction), AND because I store it well in roomy box with same items, gently placed on top of each other (flat snowflakes all the way on the bottom) it held its shape for several years. If it would get either dirty or got out of shape, I would simply wash it, re-starch it, and dry it into the same shape just like I am showing it in my video. So - starch it with a thick starch, and after use, store it well and with care, and you may not have to re-starch for many years. I treat it like very thin glass - happy holidays ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
@@HandMadeRukodelky I have used the sugar and found when storing the project, if the air is humid, the project collapses. I will try your cornstarch way. Wish me luck.
Hello there , thanks for sharing this. I will use this to starch my crochet snowflakes. Where did you get your lil pot? I want one exactly like it.
+Momma Homemaker I found one about a year or so ago in TJMax - happy holidays and happy new year
Thank you for your video it's very helpful! I love your bell and Star! Did you starch the bell directly after you washed the bell whilst it was still wet? Ta
Which power is this?
HI Jyoti, what do you mean what power is it? If you mean the weight of the thread then it's Aunt Lydia Crochet Cotton Yarn #10 🌹
Can I use flour and water, or a mix of elmers school glue and water instead of corn starch?
talia michaela do not use flour and water, use elmers glue and water - end when you will be stretching it put it over a plastic, so you can peel the plastic... I used paper towels once (in one of my videos - LOL) and it got stuck to it... I peeled it off but it was very time consuming :-) enjoy... my tree looks very ethereal with only crocheted decorations (I have a lot of them) and dainty blue lights - thanks for watching my video :-) come again, and pls share with your friends :-)
Why didn’t you just work the tail of yarn into your work with a crochet hook?
it would have been smart, wouldn't it?
His series is in three parts where can i find part 1 and 2
Hi, you would find them in my channel (you would have to scroll), a playlist or simply search in my channel... here is the playlist ruclips.net/video/sS38P3LJEVY/видео.html
Can I starch red cotton yarn this way?
Hi Kovich Ira, what a great question. Well the starch dries kind of see-through. So that should be OK, but I think I would put a tiny drop (or two) of red food coloring die (slightly lighter than your thread color) into the water before I would put starch in it and then cook it. Just to make sure it will not "dull" the color of your item. I hope my idea is helpful. If you will try it, let us know how it looks. 🌸🌸
