Thank you so much for the video. Sticking needles is a great idea to keep the shape. Thank you so much ❤️
Glad it was helpful! 💙
Thank u so much, I was making heart earrings and wanted them stiff .Easy and fast I like it!
Oh, I love the bowl tip!! I hate using balloons (I'm extremely jumpy/sensitive to sudden noise, and balloons just always have me on edge and stressed 😅), using the bowl looks like a great alternative!
Yes, the bowl works for some items!
thanks for this! I don't have a bowl type crochet but am TRYING to preserve my maternal ancestry crochet dollies into a wall hanging. I used the commercial brand "stiffeners" but they do NOT make the dollie "hard" so when it hangs it is folding. I like your video cause it appears to give me good advice to make them not curl in on themselves when hanging!
Yes, glue seems to work best for things that need to be very hard. Like I have done that for crocheted clocks too.
Very informative- many thanks.
i tried that earlier on some lace doily's with mandala designs that i like to use as stencils..fantastic idea thanks they are stiff as a board now perfect
That's great, yes, with glue they get very stiff and stay that way :)
i've just had one delivered in the post and thought of putting it in the oven on a low heat to dry it faster seems to be doing the trick
yep it works 30 mins in the electric fan oven on some baking foil, job done
: )
Your video is so Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
Thank you
Thanks for the tutorial, Happy Christmas :D
Thank you, you too! 🎄🎄
Merci beaucoup ❤️
Hi this is the first time I see your channel and You’re very nice and kind and I enjoyed reading all your replies for other comments ❤️
Thank you so much!
Loved watching this and very well explained, can you use this way on bags i have crocheted
Yes, absolutely, works for so many projects!
Thank you for this tutorial!!!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for this video it is really helpful, I am going to use this method to stiffen some crochet work that is made from glittery yarn, will the glue dull the glitter? thanks.
It can dull it a little but not much usually but depends on the glue. What I actually do, I normally sprinkle some glitter on when the glue is wet.
@@TuulaMaaria Thank you
Thank you for the video. I intend you use this on white yarn or string. Do you know if the glue will become yellow over time?
A lot will depend on the glue. White hobby glues that I have used don't get yellow but wood glue did for me once.
@@TuulaMaaria Thank you x
Thanks a million.... Can use regular glue or need fabric glue
I use normal white glue like EriKeeper, Scotch or similar. Or white wood glue.
Thanks, Tuula.
I just had the idea to make a crochet fan, with something that would need exact pieces would you recommend blocking?
Yes, I would block the pieces first, check they are the right size and then harden. After hardening you can't change the size anymore.
Hey would this work on stiffening up a guitar strap end? Specifically where the strap meets the strap button on a guitar?
I'm sorry I don't know the answer because I don't know how guitar straps work! Maybe someone will notice this questions who would be able to answer.
I am making a wall clock from a crocheted doily, therefore need it really stiff. Wonder if 80% would yield more effective result? My doily is pretty large! 😌 Would love to hear from you. Thanks:))
I have made a couple of wall clocks and one ended up too soft! 80% would be enough and I wonder if it is already too much, changing the colour of the item. It might be worth trying it out on a small sample with the particular glue you have as they differ. Need to let it dry for several days, it continues to harden for quite a while.
@@TuulaMaaria I have bought a bottle of "Stiff" and applied on my doily, thought it might be a better idea than a glue, unfortunately it has darkened my piece of art. Next time we'll try glue, perhaps 70% strength. Appreciate your reply and wish you joy and happiness ☺️✨
Thank you very much
Hello there! Thanks for sharing. Does it become waterproof?
It is fairly waterproof if you have used enough glue and it is completely dry. But it varies depending on the glue and most glues soften if the item is actually soaked in water.
Hi, does the process works with wool? Thanks
Yes, works with wool too, I have often used it for woolen snowflakes.
Thank you ma'am, want to know if after washing the bags or whatever stuff does the glue remains the same plz reply ma'am
I needed this tutorial very much thank you again from my bottom of my heart ❤
You can't really wash things that have been hardened with glue. You can brush quickly with a wet brush but not let them soak in water. I normally take hardened decorations outside and dust with a feather duster.
@@TuulaMaaria lots of thanks for clearing my query 💝💝💝
What about the glue smell which will stay?
How to remove that
The white glues I have used like Erikeeper or Scotch don't smell of anything after they have dried up. Hope you find that type of glue!
@@TuulaMaaria ok
Thankyou👍
What ratio of glue to water do you suggest for acrylic yarn?
I don't use acrylic yarn myself but it probably doesn't work very different in this so I would use the same, 60% glue.
Thankyou❣ Could this be used for doilies, large ones n ruffled ones?
Yes but for doilies I would use less glue, otherwise they get too hard.
@@TuulaMaaria , well that makes sense. Thankyou❣🥰 < Hugs
You know what I appreciate is no need to pin the item to dry.
Thanks for instructions, could you tell how to harden crochet xmas ball when you put in on a balloon what is next?
For a ball you first wet the crochet ball in glue, then blow a balloon inside it. Then hang it somewhere to dry until it is completely dry. I like to use a wire piece to hang with. The time depends on the glue you use but best left overnight. After it's hard you can break the balloon with a needle so you get it out of the crochet ball. Normally balloons can be easily pulled off the crochet after they have been broken. For a good shape try to find round balloons. Hope this helps :)
I see - thanks a lot!
Is this permanent? Do the project soften when washed????
Thanks! Do you have a pattern for the bowl/ basket? I would love to make one.
Unfortunately not, I just have an explanation of it with close-up photos in my Finnish blog. Your last name is Finnish so maybe you will understand it... www.ristiin-rastiin.fi/2014/12/valopallo-jouluksi.html
Would it work just painting it on with a brush on both sides?
Depends on the yarn. You would need to make sure that the glue would penetrate everywhere.
@TuulaMaaria Thank you 🙂
Can we use this glue for colored crochet items too?
Yes, I have used it for any colours. Depends a bit on the glue, some glues may make the original colour slightly lighter.
I use gray yarn, will this effect the color of the yarn? Thanks
It has very little effect but it can lighten the colour a tiny bit.
Will you lose the shine of the yarn with this method?? Thanks
It depends on the yarn and on the glue you use. If you have glitter yarn, the shine of the glitter can become a little bit less shiny. But you can also add loose glitter while the glue is still wet.
My chrocheted snowflakes have become dingy and I wonder if there is a way to clean them and then reglue.
It depends on what glue you used originally. Does it go away if you soak in warm water or something like turpentine? Then use glue that stays white, most PVC hobby glues like Scotch or Erikeeper. Hope it works out! I ended up throwing away a few things because the glue I used turned yellowy. A bit of trial and error!
Do you have a method to remove rusty spots off doilies? The piece i have has this n in places its even crusty like. Almost looks like pepsi spilled or dribbled coffee. Been too scared to try yet, researching still. Its a 20" across round beige doily, darker than offwhite.
I have never tried to do that. But I have heard that rubbing it with a mixture of lemon juice and salt could help but I definitely don't guarantee that it would work! Hope you find something.
@@TuulaMaaria , thankyou for your imput, 🙂. I thought it might be undisolved sugar that turned colors over time too. Think I will just try a water soak first after all. Im still learning this art of doily making.
Could you use mod podge?
I have never used that so I don't know if it is hard enough.
Will it be waterproof to go outside
Not to stay outside for long. For that you need to use a couple of coats of varnish.
I have tried to find out what happens when you clean the bowls with water??? Does it lose its shape...or does the glue retain the shape??? Someone tell me please
If an item has been hardened well and been dry for a length of time, it keeps it shape quite well. You can quickly brush it with water but not put it into water to soak.
Can you do this on dark ie black Crochet?
Yes but you need to make sure that you have the kind of glue that dries without leaving any colour. Many types of glue can make black a bit grey.
Crochet and Knitting with Tuula Maaria ok thank you, I went and bought PVA glue I'll try it in one that I'll make and see what happens.
Can fabric glue be used?
You could try on a small piece. But I'm worried it doesn't dry hard enough.
What will happen to an item if it is washed in the future?
If you need to wash an item hardened this way, you will need to harden it again. I haven't used on anything that needs to be washed. Only dust if necessary, or wipe a little.
@@TuulaMaaria I make elf hats with ears & i've been starching the ears but I don't like the smell so I thought I would try this to make the ears stiffer.
Yes, it should work for that! Although you probably need to stiffen also the spot where the ears are attached to.Sounds interesting :)
Very hard to hear you and my sound is all the way up.
Oh, sorry about that! Did you have the sound on full both on the video and your device?
can't hear it!
Oh, wonder why! Have you both the video sound and device sound on high?
Just letting you know that’s not a really good idea to ring out your projects because it can actually ruin the project I know because I’ve done it befor just letting you know that’s not a really good idea to ring out your projects because it can actually ruin the project I done it before end it actually ruined the project because of me ringing it out and I also know someone who’s done it and said not to do it because it can ruin the project and I definitely know it doesn’t work because I’ve tried know if you flatten it and just press down and let the excess glue come off that way then it will work if you just flatten it but I also have tried other ways like hairspray or some other ways to figure it out just giving you the info
Yes, you do need to be careful of not wringing it too much or you loose the glue and it won't harden anymore! That has happened to me too. Little by little with lots of glue projects I have learned the best amount of wringing out!
