  • For Valuable items that want to restore to original condition. If you have white plastic items, most likely they have turned yellow. I have discovered you can buy a 4 oz. bottle of Salon Care 40 Volume Cream for from Sally Beauty- still available for about $4 (2023)) add sunlight to turn yellow plastic back to bright white.
    This video demonstrates how to apply and the results on a bathroom exhaust fan cover that has yellowed and turned back to white.
    The vent in the video was used as a TEST and I did not know it would work before I started. Vent was used for Demo only. It is a great way to Restore items of value and electronics.
    YES I KNOW ABOUT THAT I FORGOT TO USE GLOVES CORRECTLY in the video shot 7 years ago.
    Sorry, about taking off my gloves, but I did not know it would work, so I did not take it very serious. You should where gloves if you are touching the solution or it will turn your your fingers. white.
    You can also use Paint on items like the vent, but keep in mind that if the painted item gets handled it can scratch. So, paint may not always be the best option for Valuables that you want to restore to original white condition.
    I tried using a black light, but it took days and the results were not as satisfactory. Using Sunlight only, and Salon Care, the results were amazing.
    You will not believe it until you see the video.
    Thank you for your comments.

    Hi David, This my second use of Salon based on your recommendation. I am amazed with the results. Can verify that Salon can be used to remove tar and nicotine stains from a vintage ceramic ashtray when NOTHING else had worked. Held my breath and after a few hours sitting in the sun in a large sealed plastic bag it now looks like new. No damage to the ashtray but I only applied Salon to the stain (white ceramic color) and was very very careful not to apply any where else. Thank you again for this awesome tip!!! The best $5.00 investment I ever made. Best Regards, Lenny

    bought a friends old portable ac unit...it works great, but it was all yellowed on the sides. after watching this video i bought some salon care 40 (fucker was $7 because of shipping) painted it on with a paintbrush, wrapped it in 1 layer of plastic wrap, and left it out in the sun from 6 in the morning to 4 in the evening. the ac unit is as white as a ghost, now! pretty incredible stuff! thanks a bunch for the video! i'm sure it's helped tons of people, but i'm the most recent! :)

    Salon Care cream is hair bleach used to make hair lighter. You can buy cream based peroxide at any beauty supply. Regular peroxide is pretty weak but it may work. I use it to make my porcelain sink white again. (Bleach turns some stuff yellow.)

    I just wanted to let you know that I tried this on football helmet that had turned yellow. Thought we were going to have to buy a new one for this last year of rec. football season. It worked!! The helmet is white again. I did wrap with two clear plastic head bags like they use at beauty shop after I put on with old paint brush and let sit in sun before the sun went down for about an hour and half. It was lightening up with that amount. But sun went down so I bought 2 small desk lamps and left it under those 2 lamps all night. Its white, so thank you, thank you, thank you for your video. Saved me from having to buy another helmet.

    • @DavidNorwoodCCRE
      @DavidNorwoodCCRE  6 лет назад

      That's very cool. I am surprised that the desk lamps work-there is very little ultra violet light in incandescent lamps. Surprisingly, there is ultra violet light outdoors at night as well-very small amount of UV. It may be just the solution working overnight, as there is a lot of acid ingredients in the solution. The reason for yellowing it lack of ultra-violet light, which your windows filter out. Good for your eyes, but yellows plastic. :) The suns heat and the intense UV lights speeds up the process to turn back to white. Glad it worked so well for you.

    This kind of bleaching even works with just sunlight and no chemicals at all, if you give it some time. I recently put some old yellowed PC Hardware outside for about two weeks and almost all of the yellowing went away even though it was freezing, snowy and overcast most of the time. My guess is UV light (which is filtered by glass windows) has the bleaching effect.

    • @aribowell
      @aribowell 7 лет назад +1

      that's really astonishing, because UV light seems to be the cause of the yellowing. So, how can it be the cause of the reverse?
      I also wondered, why the chemical bleaching needs UV light. It usually works without, see hair bleaching.
      Also did anyone try the combination, that is used for bleaching of hair, which is the developer cream used here *and* a powder which adds several other ingredients.

    • @TorstenSeemann

      Some other channels now believe it is the heat that makes it work, rather than the UV light. They have replicated it in warm water baths etc.

      Yes, I read that it may also be caused by not mixing the polymers correctly. Smoke detectors are made intentionally-(or they say) so you know that they are expired. - That makes sense.

    Thanks for the video. I thought it ought to work with my kitchen cabinets and it does. We don't get a lot of sunshine in my balcony so I also tried to use a uv light (it has been cloudy and raining for several weeks). The uv light helps if you leave it long enough but the sunlight is a lot more effective. You can see the sharp difference in the photo. It restored the color close to what it was originally. It takes a while but so does painting them again (And I was not sure what would be the best process for that). Again, thanks for sharing this idea. Update: I cannot find the way to add a picture to the comments, so I am sorry it is missing).

      No, they look the same as before the treatment, except for the color of course. These are not natural wood cabinets so I suppose they are melamine. When you use this stuff, you need to apply a very even layer if you're working with large surface areas. For a vent like this, it's not a big deal because each surface was relatively small. On a large piece of plastic, however, this stuff will cause very noticeable streaks/blotches if you don't apply it in a perfectly even coat. For pieces with larger surface areas (such as a game console), I'd actually recommend just filling a glass casserole dish with some cheap 3% hydrogen peroxide, immersing the plastic piece, and leaving it in the sun (flipping as necessary).

    The cream developer or peroxide is optimal because of its consistency. The higher the numeric value the stronger the peroxide. The heat speeds up the process, (hence the sun) though you could apply a hair dryer to it to speed it up. This works well on tile grout as well.

    • @DavidNorwoodCCRE
      @DavidNorwoodCCRE  5 лет назад

      Thank you for the comment. I think that the ultraviolet light plays an important roll as well. If I do not turn the yellowed part of the plastic toward the sunlight it does not turn back to white. Only one side of the plastic part turns back to white and the other side stays yellow. I think heat is important, but I do not think heat alone will work-- I could be wrong. Tile grout does not need light, as the idea it to get the water out to make it harden. If you do a video inside using a hair dryer without light on yellowed, please send me a link.

      It depends on what you are fixing. The fan cover was for demonstration, but I use it for many other plastic items. Paint is certainly an option for some items. Not sure if you want to spray paint a computer printer, other electronics or collectibles. Also, I bought 2ozs hair care product and I still have lots left to do other restoration projects. Paint tends to run out, especially if it is a large item and if you are not a good spray painter, you could have a mess on your hands. Thank you for your comment.

    I don't understand all of the comments on sites such as this about how things turn yellow from not getting sunlight. In my house I have found that everything that has yellowed gets lots of sunlight, and it appears to be the sunlight that yellows it. Plastic parts directly in sunlight turn very yellow and the same parts further away from the window don't yellow as fast or as badly. ???

    • @DavidNorwoodCCRE
      @DavidNorwoodCCRE  7 лет назад +1

      Unless you do not have a roof :) - the sunlight in your home is indirect. Plus, the windows will filter out UV light. Direct sunlight has all of the spectrum of light including UV light. Without UV light your white plastic can turn Yellow. I believe it is possible to put yellow plastic in the sun with Solon Care, but it would take a much longer time. for it to get white again. If you are from the 60s, you can use Black light in your home, which has UV light :)

    • @gailhall6994
      @gailhall6994 7 лет назад +2

      I was definitely around in the 60's but I don't have a black light left...lol. My windows are very old, too, and I doubt if any of them have the UV-blocking treatments that newer windows do. The house was built in 1952! But I do have a lot of yellowed and even browned plastics....my used-too-be-white kitchen faucet, which gets a lot of sunlight as it is close...very close....to a SW facing window...most of the other yellowed plastic (on appliances, etc.) are also on that same side of the house. That's why I assumed it was the "direct" sunlight...because it does shine directly in those windows. I doubt if I will be taking appliances apart or taking out my faucet for treatment, but I might try coating the parts and wrapping them. I believe any common glass will block UV light
      If you can put the plastic in the sun or open the window it will turn back to white. If you cannot take the plastic out in the sun, buy a bright black light. It takes longer but will work. However, if you have a lot of white plastic in your Kitchen, as a Realtor, I would recommend remodeling your kitchen. If you are renting, of course not.. If you are the owner, you might want to update to stainless steal. It will last forever and when you sell you home you will get as much as $100K more.. In the mean time you will be able to enjoy the new fixtures. I have no intention of selling my home in the near future, but I update my home all of the time, so that when the time comes to sell, it will be ready to go and I will have to come up with hundreds to thousands of dollars before I move and never be able to enjoy the updates.

      Some plastics yellow from exposure to UV light (e.g., sunlight outdoors). Some plastics become yellow indoors from layers of dust, dirt or cigarette smoke. Some pigments break down under UV exposure and reveal the color of the underlying material. And some pigments and materials are affected by heating (e.g., when placed in a window that gets sunlight).
      You can't say that "things" turn white or yellow when exposed to sunlight or not exposed to sunlight, without first knowing the materials you're working with, and what processes are involved.

    I am fairly sure you can mix over the counter hydrogen peroxide 3% + with a water soluble hand or body cream. The only reason for need the cream is so to prevent it from drying out. hydrogen peroxide is cheap. You may want to mix a small batch and test it on your plastic and if it works, and Volia.

    • @DavidNorwoodCCRE
      @DavidNorwoodCCRE  Год назад +1

      The process is accelerated by heat and the ultra violet spectrum of the sun. If it is 100% impossible to move the shower tray into the sun, it might be possible to use a bright ultra violet light, aka a black light. However, it may take a very long time and I cannot guarantee it will work. Maybe you can buy one at a big store like Walmart or Home Depot and if it does not work you can return it. If you can figure a way to get it in the sun, it will work faster.

    What it should have been was a commercial grade UV light, not a $2.99 black light. The problem with sunlight is there is a lot of infrared in sunlight which generates a lot heat that can melt or crack old plastic. For something like a vent, cleaning it and a can of spray paint is better solution. This is great for restoring something where the original appearance is desired.

    • @DavidNorwoodCCRE

      Yes, the vent was for demonstration and I was not sure it would work until I was done. • @DavidNorwoodCCRE
      @DavidNorwoodCCRE  6 лет назад

      I had a similar issue, as my master bath gets defused light and the jets all turned yellow also.
      You can certainly use Solon Care, by removing the parts, treat with SC and put outside in sunlight they will turn back to the original color.
      If the jets stay remain in the same location with no UV light they will turn yellow again in a couple of years, so you would need to go though the process again.
      If you replace the jets, you will still have the same issue under the same light. So, to avoid the same issue in a few years, you may need get shades that block out the light during the day.
      To fix my issue, I went ahead and removed all of the Spa parts, treated them with SC and put in the sun. I am planning on going through the process again in a few years, as I do not want to replace the shades.
      Lastly, I was able to get Jacuzzi company - not easy BTW, to send me ALL of the parts that turned Yellow. I put those parts away in a dark place in the original box and did not install them. When I sell my home in the future, I will will replace the old parts with the new parts so the the Jacuzzi spa looks brand new again for the new owner..
      Hope that helps?

      Oh thank you - that is extremely helpful information to know. Mine are all hard wired but I don't suppose that would make any difference because it is obviously the sensors that probably become too old to function properly. However, I have a massive multi-fuel stove so the heat sensor which is in the same room is the ONLY one that has gone yellow and I think it is less than 5 years old so it would be worth seeing if I could make it turn white again. I would have to check which parts are connected to the parts which have gone yellow to make sure I don't damage anything but I will be extra cautious before attempting anything and do a proper test to make sure it all works if I do touch it.

    • @DavidNorwoodCCRE
      @DavidNorwoodCCRE  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, it is possible that the smoke alarm turned yellow because of the stove. I suggest you check the date on the unit, sometimes time flies by fast. I replaced 6 units and put 10 year batteries in them so when the batteries are dead so will the unit be.

Do you think I could do this with the jets & motor cover? would you mask off the surrounding area with plastic & then cover the application with some plastic also ( to prevent drying out?) do you think it will discolor my tub if it gets on the tub? that would be disastrous... Thank you again for these tips!

    • @DavidNorwoodCCRE
      @DavidNorwoodCCRE  7 лет назад

      You may want to test, but I do not think you need to mask off other parts. I actually did the same to a spa myself in my bathroom and did not remove the parts, I just put plastic wrap over the yellowed jets and it took several days with the shade drawn up. but I could not get the jets REALLY white. The best way will be to remove the parts and put in the sun in a zip lock.. I think you can also use a very bright ultra violet light, but I do not have one and I have never tested how well that works. FYI: I was able to get replacement jets for free from the manufacture, Jacuzzi - I had to demand that they warranty the parts before they agreed. I have not put the parts on the tub yet, as the jets look okay after the treatment, just not perfect.

    Approximately how long will the item stay white? Is the sunlight exposure critical or will it eventually turn white without the sunlight? Thanks for the interesting video.

    • @DavidNorwoodCCRE
      @DavidNorwoodCCRE  6 лет назад +1

      Not sure, as it will depend on environment the plastic item is in. . My vent is still white, but it to 15 years to to yellow in the first place. I assume the if you keep the plastic item in indirect sunlight it will turn yellow again. It is because of the lack of ultraviolet light that cases the yellowing. The windows in your home filter out ultraviolet light, but yes direct sunlight exposure is what turns it back to white again, which has ultraviolet light. I suspect that if you had a bright black light on, all the time, your plastic would stay white.

    • @big_freedom65
      @big_freedom65 6 лет назад +2

      David Norwood Wrong, you have it backwards. There are many possible reasons that plastic turns yellow but exposure to UV radiation (light) is the most common. It's not 'lack of' UV exposure, but even minimal UV exposure will eventually cause yellowing even after it is removed and packed away. It all depends on what if any UV screeners or inhibitors the manufacturer originally used. Your (very good) bleaching hack is a separate process where the sun is speeding up the peroxide doing its job.
