How to fix yellowing plastic inside an RV back to white!

- Today I fixed my yellowing sink and tub floor in my RV! The UV rays from the sunlight coming in thru the skylight over my tub had slowly over the years yellowed the plastic in both locations! Using Salon Care 40 Volume Creme (thick hydrogen peroxide) I was able to get the yellow to turn back to white after applying the paste over the entire surface and exposing it to sunlight (or UV lamps) inside my RV! I was thrilled with the 'white' results!!

HOLY COW!!!!! I go into Sally's all the time to get developer to bleach my hair, I didn't even think to use it to "bleach" the tub hahaha. My boyfriend's shower has turned yellow from this little window right above it and I kept trying to use regular bathroom bleach to fix it and it never worked. I'm definitely going to give this a try, I can't believe its this simple
This works! I used the same chemical, brushed it on my Lance's faded bathroom, covered it with saran, left the furnace on 75F, waited 18-20 hours. A HUGE improvement. I repeated it the next day. It lightened up another shade or two. I have 1/2 bottle left. I'm in FL temps were 60-70's. I skipped the UV lamp but left the gel on MUCH longer than Charles.
Great job! Looks much whiter!
Wow! If our shower pan hadn’t just cracked, I would be trying that. Great tip!
(So hot and dry in the summer in AZ...just brutal on plastics and, well, everything!)
Looks great! Can't wait to try this! Thanks
This is so cool. I had no idea this could be done. And this is a hair care product?
I am definitely going to try this. Glad I found your video. 2 thumbs up from me!!
Thanks. I have an RV and this is the exact issue I'm trying to resolve.
Thank you so much for your video Charles. Your shared knowledge has helped save the day with our shower-tray which was only fitted 6 years ago as part of a complete, shower-room refurbishment at home. If we hadn't been able to whiten it, it would have meant removing the tiles from the fully-tiled room in order to replace the tray. As it is an ensuite to a guestroom, we hadn't realised what an effect the sunlight from the window was slowly having on the tray. We had to repeat the process 4 times, but, as of yesterday, we now have our white shower-tray back. Black-out blind now ordered for the window. My thanks again.
Inside trim of skylights/vents, exterior light and outlet housings yellowing really show an RV’s age. Those things can generally be painted or replaced easily, unlike the tub and sink. Thanks for posting that.
I have the same problem in my RV; I'll try this - thanks
Thank you. Perhaps another few applications. I also looked at RETRO BRITE videos
Thanks so much! Gonna have to do this soon but I’ll use the hair dryer, and maybe try Press and seal!
Very nice
Great video
Great job! Looks good.
not bad at all!
❤❤❤ I’m a hairstylist and I mix 40vol with bleach powder to remove color stains around the salon floor and countertop I also put this mixture onto the color stain at home when I color extensions now I’m gonna get me a uv light and see what happens
I always assumed that they came that color
Our cultured marble bathroom counters and tub have turned yellowish. Will it work on them?
You did a great job BUT, no special light is needed for this reaction. A developer, like Salon Care 40 or any other brand, needs heat to work. People that have their hair lightened will know this, most people may not. So smaller pieces could be placed in a zip-lock and place outside if it is hot out, or cover larger areas with plastic wrap and warm up with a hair dryer. It's all about warmth and time.
Thank you.
So if I just saran wrap and let it work in my 100 degree camper in TX in JUN-AUG I should be good regardless of UV or sunshine?
@@asphaltadventurer - Yes. The developer is doing the work. When people lighten or "bleach" their hair they don't sit under UV lamps in the salon. It's the chemical(s) doing the work. Sometimes they will wrap the head and sit them under a warm hair dryer because heat can help.
@@TheSmidgeroonie Thanks for replying. I am going to tackle my RV shower, sinks, and interior light cases remaining in place inside RV. Good to hear!
@@asphaltadventurer You're welcome! You are going to need it by the gallon jug lol. Just know that 10, 20, 30, and 40 will all work and the higher the number the stronger the concentration and the faster it works. (It's basically hydrogen peroxide cream) Best of luck! I hope everything turns out as you hope. 😀👍
Going to try this on the shower pan AND the walls. Will probably just tape stretch-wrap packing to the walls. QUESTION: It must be important as to what UV band you use to do this. Long-wave UV is great for lighting up party colors and other fluorescent paints, while short-wave UV seems to be more for disinfecting and can cause skin burns. Tanning salons use primarily short-wave to stimulate melanin production. SO, what spectrum is activating the goop? Which would be the best, and I saw someone comment that it's not the UV radiation at all, it's just the heat.
I have a tv unit I love it’s gone yellow it’s a glass but I can do this and put how long in the sun ?
retro bright
will this work without the lamp and just having the window open?
Will it brighten colors as well I wonder!
Would this work on yellowing jacuzzi parts ?
I'm pretty sure you don't have to shake the developer before using. Can't wait to try this.
DG Light huh is there a quicker way...???
Maybe you should have tried 2 coats and it might have advanced the white on the sink? After the 1st view, then did another coat and re waited 6 more hours? Might have come to the exact white of the other piece?
Will this work for vinyl flooring?
Worked great awesome results. Thanks much . So does this stay like this atleast for some time ?
It lasts for at least a year or so and then needs to be reapplied.
Charles Coushaine sounds good. Appreciate the response.
Saw you homemade RV shade in bathroom. How much for you to make me one to my dimensions?
I'll have to try this on my laminate cabinet doors in my kitchen.
Is it supposed to be easier than just painting
What is the product ?
Has anyone tried this on an rv dash. Our dash is getting more and more golden.
I thought it'snot about being moist but the oxiginator. Less oxygen for the chemical means more white. Am I wrong?
I wonder if this will work on headlights that have turned yellow on vehicles?
no, it doesn't make plastic clear. it will make it white. check out Scotty kilmer on RUclips, he explains how to make them clear.
Mine does this but I have no windows. No sun light at all.
Why not just paint with Rustoleum plastic spray can paint?
I have a friend that had white terrazzo floors (with gray stones). She had them repaired but there was some yellowing of the white because the terrazzo itself was old. The company that repaired the holes told her to use this same product to whiten the yellow areas. She happened to be my hair stylist so she had the developer in hand. Every day she would paint the area and cover it in saran wrap and wash it off when she got home from work and it actually bleached the areas back to white.
Did anyone try WITHOUT a UV light? I ordered the Salon Care 40 Volume Creme and will give this a try without the light and just the light coming into the RV, although from what I am reading you don't need the light at all, can anyone confirm their results without a UV light.
How did it go?
I bought a led uv grow light. It is a very bright purple colour when plugged in....will this work?
Yes, it should be purple
Why did you cover it with the plastic?? Kindly
Wow! That was some serious wrist action at 2:10
Can I do this for the inside of my fridge? I have some yellow stains that I can’t take out
I don't honestly know, however, the Salon Care 40 Creme is relatively inexpensive so its worth a try!
Truthfully... I have flipped 24 RVs... my latest is a 1985 Class A RV
I use (I kid you not ,,, this works)
I use Wal-Mart Exterior Smmi Gloss WHITE paint..
and PAINT the inside of the Refrigerator... and yes it works good on the outside too...
but you have to seal it... or it can chip after 10 years... lol
First clean your inside of the Refrigerator really good... Rinse with diluted vinegar.
To get any hard water off the walls etc.... then paint...
@@judichristopher4604 Would you do that to your own camper? Or just the ones you don't have to live in?
@@paulw1059
I would never do something unless I would use it too!!
I did it to my own Refrigerator... It looked terrible... I degreased it as I do everything before I paint it... (You can't paint Dirt or Grease) I have tried LOL.
On the RV I'm working on now... I am doing the Counter Tops with glitter ... Sinks (plastic).. Shower... Toilet... Walls... OUTSIDE of the RV (hand painted)... and then seal it with a Water Based Polyurethane... OH... and I am doing the Floor too, With Beautiful 3D Glitter on the Counter Tops etc...
I have taken many old Refrigerators and degreased them and painted them with Walmart Exterior Paint... then seal that with the Water Based Polyurethane... LOVE that.
Good information.Video a little slow.
I want to do the plastic panels in my bathroom ceiling. Can I do this without the plastic?
If you can take it off just wash it and set it out in the sun it does wonders !
I'm looking everywhere to find a similar UV light. Where did you find one?
An Amazon.com link is in the description below the video!
@@charlescoushaine I hadn't noticed that. Thank you so much!
I have yellowed shower walls in a manufactured home. It is a much bigger area. Any ideas?
Perhaps you could spread the Salon Care 40 on a single wall and then directly cover the wall with plastic wrap. Have never tried it but it might just work!
As a licensed cosmetologist, the peroxide needs heat to develop, not sunlight. That's why we put shower caps on your head ( to prevent drying), and put you under a hot dryer. Dry product wont lift the yellow. Just keep it moist (reapply the peroxide if needed, not water) and warm.
I wonder if there's a UK equivalent for Salon Care 40 volume H2O2 creme?
(I was also having kittens seeing your power outlets next to the sink. In Europe no power outlets are allowed in any bathroom.)
All power outlets next to the sink are GFI so protected!
@@charlescoushaine So I couldn't murder my great-aunt by plugging in a hairdryer and chucking it in the bath while she's in it?
Damn.
X2
There must be GFCIs (ground-fault circuit interrupters), to protect from electrocution, next to sinks.
40vol peroxide
hi, I tried this on yellowed light switches but it didn't work. Used several different hydrogen peroxide products, different bags, different days of sunlight.. Maybe the plastic is different? Thanks anyway.
Bleach?
I saw another post about getting the peroxide from a hair care supply store. The normal peroxide you get in the brown bottle is 3%. The developer you buy at the hair care store is 9-12% peroxide so it works better. It's also in a gel form so it helps it cling to the plastic better. Good luck!
I know they used to make plate covers out of Bakelite years ago. You test for a reaction by using simichrome if they’re Bakelite, replace them and sell the Bakelite ones on ebay
I have an entire shower to do, not just the pan. Has anyone tried with regular peroxide? Does it continue to work after it dries?
The problem with regular peroxide is that it's not thick enough to cling to a surface and will run off.
I seen where person used regular peroxide 6 ounces and equal part water, then 12 ounce cream of tarter. I think this must be used to thicken the peroxide.
Do you have to cover it with plastic?
Yes it's to hold in the heat
Is plastic o ceramic?
Acrylic plastic; ceramic should not go yellow.
Definitely going to try this on my teeth 😁
I hope you didn't, that product has hydrogen peroxide in it
@@rosebean Teeth brightening products also have hydrogen peroxide in them, and are designed for use on the teeth. Using a different product on the teeth is probably risky if not dangerous.
It's a joke y'all 😁😁😁😁
😭😭😭😂😂😂😂 crazy crazy
Hello mate why did u cover it with plastic? Can’t u get the same effect if you just turn on the uv light without covering it?
Covering in plastic only keeps the Salon Care 40 from drying out too quickly.
So, why this hair care product can restore yellow plastic?
It contains hydrogen peroxide which is a strong bleaching agent and is used in bleaching paper, flour and teeth! Also yellowed acrylics such as in this guy's RV.
Don't forget your skylight.
😂
how much % hydrogen peroxide does this contain. In Europe e have this gel also, but a different brand, and I ws wondering what % content I should use
Robby Carell 40 volume developer cream/gel contains 12% hydrogen peroxide.
Why the hell are your taps on the side? 😅
Heat will activate the chemical reaction in the product - a hair dryer would work better , not sure how safe the peroxide is on plastic . Of course your probably selling your camper .
My entire shower looks like that. Could I just lay wrap directly to the shower
Yes, you can and work the same.
Ha Ha
Wonder if this method works on teeth. 😁
I believe that kind of peroxide is too strong for your mouth, but you could get food grade peroxide or dental peroxide & they make uv lights for your teeth
