- For 2019, the Ram 1500 offers the eTorque mild hybrid system on the second generation 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and the 5.7-liter HEMI®
V-8 engines. Brian Spohn, Assistant Chief Engineer - eTorque, mild hybrid application and propulsion systems - talks about how the system works, and what it brings to the overall driving experience and performance of the 2019 Ram 1500.
It's a electric motor connected to the drive train by a belt. That's it. Takes 10 seconds to explain it.
Thanks cause I had no idea what the hell he was saying. I thought he was running for office with that line a chit.
What about when your at a red light or worse case sonario in bumper to bumper traffic. What about the ac and heat. Will this be turned off as well when motor is not running till your moving again. I'm in Louisiana so that would suck here and I got thru Dallas alot so just curious what happens as your stopped or is there a override or disable button I can use. I've never owned a Ram but looking at getting a 5.7 hemi Big Horn in a 1500 or 2500 still deciding on which one. Thanks in advance.
@@jdurrant421 so I just got a 2023 rebel with this and I was worried about the same thing. Basically, the truck won’t shut off if the ac is on. It automatically turns off the stop/start. I’m in south Florida and always have the AC on and iv only had the truck turn off once. It doesn’t really help with gas mileage in my option. Just basically some more tourqe
Got any other technical details you can incorrectly sum up for me?
Welp...bought my first Ram In April...2019 Bighorn Hemi Etorque. Actually....I'm pretty impressed with it. I actually get around 24mpg highway at 65-70mph if I'm not driving up an incline. Smooth shifting too. I stayed away from Rams for years...now I can't imagine not having one. Weird.
Are you still impressed?
What's the life on the Power Pack Unit? Will it need to be serviced or replaced every few years?
Shawn Browning do you have to change the motor in you refrigerator every two years ?
@@jamesweinzierl7399 The power pack is the 48v battery unit. I don't know of any fridges with one of those.
s0meguy809 dumb reply
Fridges? The F?
Shawn that’s a good question. 😁
Shawn Browning The 48v battery pack is oversized relative to the power draw from the eTorque system. The actual eTorque system only draws about 1/4 of power from the battery back at maximum. This is to ensure the battery pack remains functional for a long period of time. All that considered, it’s designed to last about 10 years with normal operation
What If that etorgue fails or dont work... ?.. And that belt.. how long it last?
Hey Stellantis - Is there a way to talk to someone about the PPU unit? I have a few technical questions about the battery?
Good technology and well conceived. Maybe pick a P R pro to read specs next time.
Bring back the CROSS HAIRS!!!
From an owner, it does not offer much fuel savings, this is more so for emissions and EPA ratings etc etc.
That's what I'm wondering. If I can just order me a new truck with the 5.7 hemi without all the etorque system on it.
I have this on my 2019 Ram 1500 Limited. If you are only familiar with earlier generation 12v stop/start systems, you don't understand how much better this implementation is. I had the older gen on my 2016 Mercedes Benz GL 450 and hated it. I reflexively disabled it after starting the car. I leave the eTorque implementation enabled because I really don't notice it. Fantastic technology.
Do you have the v6 3.6? I'm looking for performance mods but I cant find anything like a cold air intake an custom catback exhaust, mines the quadcab 6.4 bed box
Just bought a 2019 1500 Laramie with etorque in May. Now it's July 3rd, it has 2700 miles and I'm back at the dealership waiting on my loaner. The etorque charging system failed, the part is 11,060 dollars, covered under warranty of course. I hope this doesn't become a trend.
How are you doing 1 year later lol
@@randyolmos41 Hey thanks for asking. Its been great so far. I haven't had any issues. I have 17k miles on it, way less than I should have by now due to covid and not driving as much.
@@lavixl that’s awesome ! I’m glad, just got mine so I hope I don’t run into issues.
My system failed at 40K. My truck is at the dealership waiting for the part right now. Glad I opted for the extended warranty!! Not happy at all though!!
@@michaelcrowder320 Oh man that sucks. Is this the first time you've had trouble with it? I have 22k miles on mine now but approaching 3 years this May.
I dont like the start stop at all. hopefully they will continue to have non start stop trucks to, or else have a way to permanently turn it off
There's a button in my truck to turn it off
1:55 "...save a 1/2 gallon per hour with auto-stop" ... nonsense, that is about a 50% improvement in gas mileage, LOL ... prove it. Nobody wants their dang engine shutting off, not ever! .. let's call that "Engine shut off anxiety".
Yeah simple push of a button by the drive mode selector and its off.
IMO, Start/Stop can work well in full hybrid, where the electric motor has enough power to fully launch a vehicle from a dead stop.
Im not clear on if it is using the traditional starter to get the motor running or the serpentine belt to start the motor?
Has anyone hooked a 12v Warn winch up to one of these systems? You'd have to connect it to the 12V battery. I'm curious how the 24v system reacts to a sudden drain on the 12v battery, and if this could be used as an alternative to upgrading the factory battery to handle the load a winch puts on the 12v system. He states at 2:50 that the 12v system is powered by the 24V system. I'm also curious what sort of capacity this would have for an "overland" application where you typically introduce a spare battery to power lights and other conveniences when camping.
Obviously no answer here...but your question is awesome. Did you ever find out?
$2200 for the replacement PPU when it goes out. That's a lot of gas right there.
Currently researching adapting a 5.7 HEMI ETorque MGU to a General Motors 3800 engine... Buick eSabre Limited...
Great technology. Issue is going to be reliability. FCA should warranty all if the Etorque components for 150k miles and the standard powertrain components for 75k miles. No one should have to be concerned about thousands of dollars of repairs in their first 75-100k miles especially not on trucks that cost 40k-70k dollars!
Hello my ram1500 Bighorn 2019 had problem.. I'm at 60,150km.. and I have problem with batery pack not charging the 12V battery... good news is that Chrysler in Canada is fixing it for me ... the bad news is it has been now 4 weeks since thay took it for the repair. Will see what thay find
@@tomiyourtradesguy6708 I love the design of the new Rams. I just wish they would throughly test them out before releasing new technology to the market. Especially when it deals with the powertrain! Keep us posted on the fix!
If you ride the brakes lightly while coasting down a mountain road, will the regenerative braking be used exclusively to slow the truck, or will the brake pads and rotors heat up?
Let the motor do the braking. The electric motor will put a drag on the drivetrain to regain the energy. Do not touch the brakes unless you have to. Regenerative braking is only a term. The brakes do not actually collect any energy.
The battery packs are shit… And getting it replaced has been worse than pulling teeth
Over priced over rated start stop, make the Government happy BS..
I drove my brother Laramie a few years ago from Columbus OH to Windsor Ontario and back, loved it! I now have a 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn and love that engine setup
Guys got a killer personality
He is the assistant chief engineer at one of the largest auto manufacturer in the world. Killer indeed!!!
He probably smoke some good shiet and got staged fright
He's probably spent the greater part of his life buried in textbooks. He's there to work hard and build new technologies in vehicles, not be the next Logan Paul
The auto start/stop does NOT save half a gallon an hour.
Complete bullshit.
Frigging junk unless you like paying a dealer for repairs that you could typically do yourself before this garbage
That is the grand plan. More stuff on the vehicles the harder to make repairs for yourself = the more money the manufacture makes = the more money the dealerships make = the consumer is getting fu**ed.
This is junk!!! Gimmie an Electric motor that has 400hp and 400 torque instantly and can be recharged in 2 minutes. You gimme that and I’ll toss my Hemi to the side...but until then it’s big V8s.
It's still a big V8.. it just has help now 🤷♂️
Wait? They added more stuff to an already complicated engine to better reliability? Is it just me...
Means more money to the manufacture and the dealership. Consumer loses out.
Like dynamic braking in rev. As used in modern locos.?
I'm loyal FCA. But this gobbledegook language is for the press. Don't use technobabble on FCA customers like we're Mercedes or Range Rover idiots who can't use a dipstick. We know what's under the hood in our Rams and Dodges. We fix our own cars and trucks. If you truly are an engineer and not some management suck-up, then speak to us using plain English and stop sounding like a salesman. The people who are buying e-Torque will not trust someone who calls him/herself an "engineer" and then spins the pitch using brochure lingo. My gosh, I'll bet your fingernails are clean and manicured.
There's either room for improvement or not,
Dropped mine off at the dealership March 6th with a eTorque Battery system fault...estimated replacement part is due JULY 8th...you read that right, 4 months. eTorque and FCA’s service policy can suck it. I love this truck but this system is horseshit. I’m already researching lemon law cuz I fear this is gonna be a trend and there’s no way I can continue to pay for this repair out-of-warrantee.
What will happen if l hook up another etorque battery pack to my 2020 5.7
This system is complete trash have my ram limited 2019 at the shop for two weeks now only has 30,000 miles thinking of getting rid of it now before it gets worse later when there’s no warranty
Please remove Etorque and auto/stop start or open more order availability for non- Etorque Ram 1500's
Does anyone know how many amps this system charges at? and since it steps down voltage, I should be able to add an extra battery off the right? I ask these questions because i want to add and subwoofer system to my 2020 but before I do that i want to understand whats going on with this setup.
I don't know about the charging rate of the amps but the typical amperage draw is anywhere from 2-6Amps, the Inverter/Battery control unit closely monitor this with a sensor on the 12V battery so you'd have to factor that in if you are installing an additional battery because this will effect that reading. The vehicle knows what consumption the equipment installed draws and makes calculations of that based on the sensor to determine if a system isn't working as it should. An abnormal reading from the 12V system can inadvertently cause an issue with the MHEV system because they're integrated with each other. MOPAR vehicles are pretty loose on the criteria to set codes for mechanical faults but electrical systems are very quick to store codes or even disable functions so I would just be prepared to run into some issues for a mod like that.
I have the part for you to use for OEM radio
I would like to have an answer please! My ram e-torque had a dead baterry and would not start, but my brothers jeep e-torque starts even without a baterry and only with the e-torque batteries , is it that ram is different? Or my etorque batteries are bad? Thanks
In some ways this reminds me of the E-charger.
Can you shut off the etorque permanently?
Alguien puede desirme acual es el voltaje regular en donde marca la pila, tengo una ram 2021 hemi etorqe
12 en la pila y 24 en la pila de Etorque
Yeahh that's a NO from me
Quero informações em português pode ser obrigado
I’m keeping my 2014 bighorn for now I got the hemi With the multiple displacement system. MDS four-cylinder shut down. Crew cab all black for my two girls . enjoy the Rams guys love them . My last truck was a 2005 short bad standard cab . Black as well LOL
General repair
135 foot pounds of torque delivered through that serpentine belt? I don't know about that.
I have driven a few vehicles with stop/start, horrible systems.
The heat & air basically stop working when this happens.
A/C still functions during start stop according to press release for etorque
@@ForTehNguyen It has an electric non-belt drive compressor?
A/C compressor is on the same belt as the 48V motor and on a different crank pulley than the one powering the water pump, so it can still spin with the main engine being off.
"Unlike regular stop/start systems, eTorque has air conditioning capable of blowing cold air when the engine isn't turning, even though it has a conventional belt-driven A/C compressor."
@@ForTehNguyen Just looked at a picture of the system. Not seeing how that is possible. The wp has a small belt on the main cranks pulley, most likely to save on cost, by using an extra belt instead of requiring the e torque belt to be even longer. Unless the main crank pulley is clutched (I have seen no indication of this) then shutting down the engine will turn off the compressor. I have read the entire press release and the only ac tidbit was this:
"
The new HVAC system features nearly 25 percent more air flow at lower noise levels, including larger front defroster vents for better performance. Improved vents give rear passengers 50 percent more airflow when compared to the previous generation."
The quote you gave was from car & driver. I'm not trying to argue, but one of us is wrong. If the system has a clutched main pulley, then you are correct. A pulley with two different belt paths does not mean it is clutched, just that it has two belt paths. Very common, just like the gm LS motors.
@@ForTehNguyen I never got a response.... Please prove who is wrong. BTW, I have had an extra week to study the designs between V6 & V8 systems, still not seeing a clutched main pulley....
Poor narration, kinda wavy, sounds vague.
Sorry...
Technicians understand it np
