In this lesson on irregular Korean verbs and adjectives, we’ll explore how to correctly conjugate irregular adjectives that end in 받침 ㅎ. While there are also regular verbs and adjectives with 받침 ㅎ, you need to know which are regular and which are irregular.
Most of the irregular words that end in 받침 ㅎ are adjectives, with many being colors.
Here is the rule: When an irregular verb or adjective stem with 받침 ㅎ meets 아 or 어, you remove ㅎ and add ㅣ. If the verb stem ends in ㅏ or ㅓ, the combination with ㅣ results in the double vowel ㅐ, and if the verb stem ends in ㅑ, the result is ㅒ.
    For example:
    노랗다 + 아요/어요 → 노랗아요 → 노라 + ㅣ + 아요 → 노래요 (노랗다 means "to be yellow")
    그렇다 + 아요/어요 → 그렇어요 → 그러 + ㅣ + 어요 → 그래요 (그렇다 means "to be like that")
    하얗다 + 아요/어요 → 하얗아요 → 하야 + ㅣ + 아요 → 하얘요 (하얗다 means "to be white")
Here is another rule: When irregular verbs and adjectives ending in 받침 ㅎ meet the vowel 으, such as in the future tense or imperative forms, the ㅎ is removed first, followed by the removal of 으.
    For example:
빨갛다 + 은/ㄴ → 빨갛은 → 빨가은 → 빨가ㄴ → 빨간 (빨갛다 means "to be red")
Because most of the irregular words we learn in this lesson are adjectives, it’s helpful to focus on how to use adjectives with nouns. To place an adjective before a noun in Korean, we add 은/ㄴ to the adjective. This addition includes 으, allowing us to apply the rule we just mentioned. Like in English, adjectives in Korean can appear at the end of a sentence or before a noun.
    For instance:
좋다 becomes 좋은 사람 (좋다 means "to be good" and 사람 mean "person" in Korean)
예쁘다 becomes 예쁜 사람 (예쁘다 means "to be pretty" and 사람 mean "person" in Korean)
Now let's see some regular verbs and adjectives ending in 받침 ㅎ:
    좋다 (to be good)
    낳다 (to give birth)
놓다 (to put, to put on)
넣다 (to insert, to put in)
These regular verbs and adjectives conjugate normally when they meet a vowel, such as 좋다 becoming 좋아요.
For the irregular verbs and adjectives ending in 받침 ㅎ, here are some examples:
빨갛다 (to be red) → 빨개요
노랗다 (to be yellow) → 노래요
파랗다 (to be blue) → 파래요
까맣다 (to be black) → 까매요
하얗다 (to be white) → 하얘요
이렇다 (to be like this) → 이래요
그렇다 (to be like that) → 그래요
저렇다 (to be like that over there) → 저래요
어떻다 (to be how) → 어때요
These rules help ensure accurate conjugation in Korean. Practice these rules and examples to improve your understanding of irregular verbs and adjectives in Korean.
