Great video man. 8-year Digital Imaging Tech here (working mostly in the fashion & commercial photography industries). So it's particularly interesting to me to see how other people are using C1. As a DIT, my job almost entirely lives within the C1workspace, and setting up and running sessions for photographers. Couple of little tips if I may: + Your Session naming. Industry standard (here in Sydney, Au anyway) is to name sessions starting with a backwards date- so if i was Tech-ing for you today, I would've named the session "190625_STREET_April". Main reason for this, is because of how computers will default it's sorting, alphabetically/numerical. The backwards date helps keep everything in order (instead of say, April, always coming before February). Obviously there's no right or wrong for this, and by the looks of it, your way works well for you, but we find keeping to the standard format helps when handing files off to other people/photographers/retouchers/clients. It also makes things incredibly organised once you start talking about organising tons and tons of sessions (typical month for me is virtually a new Session every day... multiply that by the years and we're talking a lot of sessions). Makes it incredibly clear and simple to back track and find old work (Im sure you'll be photographing for many many years to come!) + Your import folder. You were correct in saying that the "Capture" folder mostly relates to tethered shooting. Again, not saying your way is wrong, but I would've downloaded the cards into the 'Capture' folder, and not the 'Session' folder. This keeps your Session folder hierarchy clean (Your root Session folder will therefore still have Capture, Selects, Edited etc folders ONLY). You did touch on it, but I would've also made seperate folders for each card download (Card 01, Card 02 for eg, within the Capture folder ). Although this may complicate that hierarchy (also like you touched on), it helps keep you organised and clear as to what cards have been downloaded, and what hasn't (for eg, a typical untethered work day for me could included > 20+ card downloads). Organisation is key! It also allows you to cross check that the entire contents of a card is correct downloaded correctly and entirely. Harder to do when every card gets dumped into one folder. Sometimes, when working between drives and cards, you can easily get connection dropouts/ corrupt files etc. It also simply makes things a lot less of a nightmare when you start dealing with 5000+ frames in a session (not likely for your personal work, I know; but possibly when it comes to professional/commissioned stuff). + Selects. You did touch on how you didn't like not being able to see starred images across different folders. On the further most left tab: "Library", there's a sub menu called 'Session Albums' and then 'All Images'. Selecting this searches for ALL image files within that session. Now this may be too many to see at once, but whilst you're in this Smart Album, you can also use the Search Filters to narrow the search (Like you're already using). For eg, it sounds like 'All Images, 5 Stars' might be of most use to you; that will show you ALL 5 stars across the entire session- even if they're in seperate card folders. That way, you're not sacrificing organisation, just to be able to make selects. Within the Session Albums sub menu there's a real powerful tool that allows you to make your own Smart Album parameters, for example, if you wanted to make a shortcut for one of all files Session wide that had a certain color tags, or one of every file containing the word "Street". Or one of any file shot in April. Almost anything is possible. Hope that all makes sense. Hope it helps. And keep up the good work!
** Sorry didn't want to come across as a know-it-all. Just wanted to share my thoughts and and tips I could impart. Happy to take a Skype call or something if you wanted a quick look into what the standard was for these sessions to get setup in a commercial/high usage capacity. Hope it might give you a few ideas on how you could incorporate it into your workflow.
Dude, no worries at all! This is what it's all about. Thank you for the masterclass in file management. It's only when we say these things out loud that our errors can be corrected. You're 100% correct, I should be importing everything into the capture folder. It helps with cleanliness and it just makes sense. As far as creating a new folder for a new import, that is something I practice with portraits shoots when we change location or looks but If I can learn those smart folders then it totally makes sense to separate my imports. I might be in a little too deep to change my personal file naming format but I can def start on the next job. The reality is I never handle the handoff or file naming structure on set but this is valuable knowledge that can only help me in the long run. Can't thank you enough for taking the time to write this response and I am sure your comment will add value for everyone here.
I fuckin love you dude! You're a big part of my photography, I know it sounds ridiculous but I just fuckin love you man, thanks for all you do. I wish you had more time to upload more. I'm just a huge fan of how you carry yourself and I could listen to you talk about photography for hours and I have such respect for you. You are my standard!
Haha are you kidding?! I love you guys man!! Can't thank you enough for the kind words and the encouragement. If it weren't for you expressing that I probably wouldn't find the motivation to keep making these videos. I owe you guys. Thank you for watching and being amazing. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Hey great video! I love your stuff. I bought the 16mm F 2.8 based on your recommendation. I was hoping one day you could make a video where you talk about tour technique for holding the camera and shooting stealthily for street photography. I'm wondering how often people notice what you are doing, and how often do people get pissed?
Thanks for this little tutorial- I've been shooting since the days of film, and file management was same in principal, edit your negs with contact sheets or transparencies on the light box.... culling the bad ones, and then placing them in Print File 35mm sheets, labeling them and then filing them in a file cabinet under various categories... anyway back then I became a little disheartened with the photography industry in it's transition to digital in the early 2000's and stopped shooting professionally. I met a fork in the road of life and took it which steered me far away from professional photography- but after 15 years of missing it terribly, I'm back and was struggling with my own file management/workflow system. I've chosen Capture One and love it. I still have some trouble working out finding my final edits, or and I end up re creating another edit or find that I have versions all over the place, on my phone, dessktop, hard drive etc because I don't have a real system, I wing it every time and I waste a massive amount of time that way, and also introduce a lot of aggravation in my life I just don't need! Very Long story short, thanks for this vid I will make changes and try to adapt to this method and simplify my life!
I've been dreading having to sift through all of my images and getting a system going and this will be very helpful in doing so. Along with all of the other great content you share, maintenance/organizational videos like this are so welcomed! Thank you, bro!
Gotta throw in a little tutorial here and there! Try tackling a folder a day. If you don't overwhelm yourself you'll get through them in no time. Thanks for watching!
A tip to save keystrokes: When you're doing your initial star ratings, filter your view to show the pics with no rating. Once you assign a rating to a pic it disappears from the current [filtered] view. Saves you the keystroke of advancing to the next picture. I like to assign a rating to every picture, starting with 1-3 for the first pass. 1 - junk, will be deleted 2 - not worth editing 3 - good enough for a second look After that I will look at my 3-star pics and the pics to be edited get bumped to a 4. After editing, keepers get a 5. I do like your idea of assigning a color to denote that editing is done. I love these videos because, as you said, it allows photographers to impart knowledge to others and for that knowledge to be absorbed in different ways. I picked up several little tips from your video. It's funny: my workflow has a lot of similarities to yours even though we have both arrived at the process in different ways.
Hey Drew, thanks for the feedback. I usually have that filter set so once I have a star-rating applied so it immediately disappears from the filtered view. It's only now with you saying that I realized it wasn't happening. Thanks for the heads up! I use to start with a 1-star rating and its probably good practice to have everything rated. As far as deleting pics goes, I only remove accidental frames and I do that while I am going through the files. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate the dialogue about this kind of thing.
This definitely helped me understand the file management a better since it's a bit different than Lightroom. Also, your workflow is efficient, definitely got a nugget or two from you. Thanks again Jason!
Seriously have been learning so much from your videos! 110% would love to see more videos about your studio portraiture work - grateful for your knowledge sharing 🙏
Raw files imported in Capture One still have some post processing on them. The App adds sharpness to the file and often some slight contrast. If you play with the film curve setting you can select linear response and that’s the flattest Raw file you can get.
Good video, any recommendation on how to setup sessions for the previously captured images? I have tons of old pictures organized in folders on an external HDD and just started using C1, still not sure what is the best way to put those into sessions and start editing. Any help would be appreciated.
I would try filtering all the images by date and creating sessions by the month and year they were shot. If there are just too many files try creating a session for each year and then you could color tag the months and create sub folders for them.
How do I export images to external drive with my settings made like in Lightroom export as Catalog with xmp file? Great folder system you have, mine Is a mess 😊
Great tuto, thank :-) I try to see ev to get deep into C1 since i left adobe ( 6 month) ;-) Just one question : Are you just working with sessions ? And if no, do you have an archieve catalog ? Because i would like to ask you one question more ; i've 60k pictures in my archieve cat !! And each time i click on "all images", it takes two hours to C1 to "read" all the pictures////It s annoying lol...I don t know if it s a bug from the 2020 version of C1 but i don t see any helps on youtube on that subject ;-) Go on anyway deeper on C1 :-) JF bests regards from Colmar, FR and happy new year ! I use capture one to convert my raf’s then I bring it into my photos. Then I edit using luminar. I just got into capture one still using the free Fuji version. Crazy amount of a learning curve. Your workflow is awesome. I’ll eventually try it your way.

1 - I like to create a preset that removes all color correction and has a linear response to contrast. I title it "IMPORT" and I use that preset when ingesting new images. I don't like it when the files keep the Fuji jpeg colors on them. 2 - I always use Fuji AWB. I don't mind adjusting it later if it gets something wrong, which is rare. 3 - At the Studio, I use the Surface Studio 2 and my laptop is the Surface Book. 4 - Haha! thanks for the advice and thanks for watching!

I’ve been using Capture One since 2015-16. Originally I started with the Sony only version as I was heavily invested in the Sony Alpha series cameras and for whatever reason, Lightroom never felt quite right in terms of processing my images efficiently. Anyway, I’m a big advocate for Capture One and totally agree with you about it being the industry standard for commercial, high end fashion work etc. You are a master of light and art and I really enjoy watching your channel and the exchange of knowledge. Keep pushin Stockezy. IG - @Topscura
Naming a session... Would be more smart to name the session Street_2019_06 rather than Street_June_2019. The when you try to sort it alphabetically, it will be sorted in the correct capture time. Just a free tip... ;)
This was great. I'm a lightroom user and love that lightroom desktop syncs automatically with Lightroom mobile on my phone, I'm definitely interested in Capture 1, Looks super powerful. Great photos btw!
I don’t know how you people keep track of all your photos with this kind of management. I’ve been using ZENFOLIO since 2005 and for each year I have different folders like street photography, friends and family, odds and ends, nature, pets, projects, etc. Nothing ever gets lost and very easy to find for any year going back to 2005 and no need to have all these back up hard drives just a tablet for my editing to use on the go.
One does not simply manage their files with Capture One. I've heard of myths from times long past that it was possible but have yet to see it myself. (good video by the way)
My girlfriend is prettier than your girlfriend. :) Just kidding. I'm a hobby photographer coming from LR. So far the biggest hurdle for me has been the cataloging and import. My brain is in a fog. This helped a little. Thank you.
Thanks so much for this! I am in the process of switching to Capture One from Lightroom CC. This is great info and exactly what I needed. Love all your work man keep doing it. I'm planning on getting to NYC for a weekend soon if you are down to go shoot hit me up! @socken.schublade

Great Video! Will you ever do a video showing how you process your photos?
At 7:50 you state you like to rip everything from the photo, such as the Fuji color. Doesn't shooting in RAW already do that?
Raw files imported in Capture One still have some post processing on them. The App adds sharpness to the file and often some slight contrast. If you play with the film curve setting you can select linear response and that’s the flattest Raw file you can get.

So basically, after you've exported from Capture 1, you've got jpegs on your desktop, in the cloud, and on your phone. What happens to your unusable, or 4-star (or less) RAF files on Capture 1?
I have all my edited jpegs in the cloud, or still in my catalog in Capture 1 (a backup catalog is on my Desktop), but my HD is running low on space...
I have a cheap, spacious, and portable Samsung SSD drive, and ready to use it, but I'm just not sure how I should utilize it. Keep all my 5-star jpegs on it--and toss the RAFs? I know--a cringe-worthy question to some, but I'm also a hobbyist photographer and willing to let go of unusable shots.

I would highly recommend getting 4-8tb drive with RAID, that stays at your home. I save all my files, every single one regardless of the star rating. I currently have a 20tb Raid storage unit that holds all my videos and capture sessions.
What you may not like as a photograph now may surprise you in a few years as your style changes. I wouldn’t delete anything.
I'm thinking about trying C1, do you use any presets pack?
I own one preset pack when I first hopped on the C1 train. I wasn't a big fan of it but I ma sure they have some great ones.
What storage you got on your imac for the GFX? lol
Dope video! You should definitely do a video on your editing process in C1.

This was great. I'm a lightroom user and love that lightroom desktop syncs automatically with Lightroom mobile on my phone, I'm definitely interested in Capture 1, Looks super powerful. Great photos btw!
I like to start my folder name with YYMMDD and then a description, so that all my folders are chronologically. Creative greetings Alain
That would definitely be the smart way to do things. I started this format a few years back and can't bring myself to rename all the folders.
@@Stockezy Indeed completely changing your system is virtually impossible.
much respect
I don’t know how you people keep track of all your photos with this kind of management. I’ve been using ZENFOLIO since 2005 and for each year I have different folders like street photography, friends and family, odds and ends, nature, pets, projects, etc. Nothing ever gets lost and very easy to find for any year going back to 2005 and no need to have all these back up hard drives just a tablet for my editing to use on the go.
Thnx for sharing 👌🏻
More of this!
One does not simply manage their files with Capture One. I've heard of myths from times long past that it was possible but have yet to see it myself.
(good video by the way)
My adhd won’t allow me to be this organized ughhh
good video, but the background music is too load. thanks
Please remix this thing, or just lose the music completely. Your ideas are really good.
nice video. the crops ruin most of the photos for me :)
My girlfriend is prettier than your girlfriend. :) Just kidding. I'm a hobby photographer coming from LR. So far the biggest hurdle for me has been the cataloging and import. My brain is in a fog. This helped a little. Thank you.
LETS SEE SOME OF THAT PORTRAIT STUFF BRUH
Next Video! GFX 50R In the Studio.
Miss you too man haha
You'll be sick of me soon enough. Already working on another video. Haha!
Music unnecessary it reduces your otherwise excellent vid
Unnecessary music louder than the necessary audio.
EDIT: Oh thank goodness it ends 3 minutes in.
Thanks so much for this! I am in the process of switching to Capture One from Lightroom CC. This is great info and exactly what I needed. Love all your work man keep doing it. I'm planning on getting to NYC for a weekend soon if you are down to go shoot hit me up! @socken.schublade
Let me know when you plan on being here and we should link for sure! Glad you enjoyed the video.
@@Stockezy sounds good man, will do!
@@Stockezy Just locked in the trip! I'll be there August 13 and heading back on the 16th. Shoot me a DM if you are available at all. Cheers!
Background music way to loud and not needed at all
Gave up after 40sec, all I can hear is music, ridiculous. If I wanted to listen to music I’d go to Spotify! 🤷♀️
Shut up.
@@Stockezy Well thats a constructive argument you've put across there /facepalm
Music is poop
