Hey man, Just recently made the switch from lightroom to capture one.
As a hobby photographer the adobe subscription does not work for me, to help the transition i was looking for some videos on youtube. most of them are hour long. glad to see you are making a series to help us understand the programme and excel in it.
Just wanted to show my gratitude and hit that subscription!

I'm really looking forward to the series! I have been using all of the major photo editors but keep on going back to Capture One. The results are always far better. I find that I trip a over the nuances of Capture One. This is why I am so interested in what Ted will be doing -- he has a way of making what he talks about so much more simple.

Thank you for starting this series. I'm a Capture One user, and I'll be looking forward to seeing how you work with the program.
One thought on what you said. I do travel photography, and I use Sessions instead of Catalogs for this reason. Assume your entire collection is saved in one Catalog. That file will become massive, and every time you make the slightest change to any individual photo in that catalog, the file will be marked as having changed.
I use Time Machine to backup my computer on an external drive. Even the slightest change will change that huge file, and Time Machine will back up yet another copy of it. Because catalogs are so huge, your backup drive will quickly fill up ... at least that's what I understand.
By working with Sessions, you are working with smaller, more manageable files - and saving an incredible amount of backup space.

Thanks Ted. I tried Luminar and Lightroom but settled on Capture One because for me it seemed to be the easiest to use. I don't do much in post processing, but the little I do is right at my fingertips. I do use Sessions rather than Catalogs; that system seems to work better for me. I'm looking forward to your additional videos on Capture One. I'm a slow learner when it comes to technology, so being able to reference back to your videos is a huge help. Thanks again, man!

Great video Ted. I started my photography journey two years ago this coming Christmas. I bought C1 and subscribed to Adobe at the same time. I was a newbie on both platforms. I think I opened Adobe a half dozen times. C1 was just more intuitive to me and (although C1 tends to sharpen the initial RAW more than Lightroom) I was always so much more impressed with the initial file. C1 has some great tutorials online. The manipulation of color in C1 is astounding. I love that I can buy it and it belongs to me, rather than leasing it from Adobe. I don't think I save that much money (I keep updating C1 every year because of great new functionality (ie Luminosity masking)), but owning the software makes more sense to me, especially if times get hard. With a lease, you will be shut out as soon as you cancel. Looking forward to future videos on C1!

Fuji's film profiles have always been around in Lightroom in the same manner, in fact one large reason why I still use Lightroom is that I can use the film profiles with Raws from my older Fuji cameras (X-E1, X-T1) while Capture One only supports film curves for newer models. If that wasn't the case I would've probably switched already, since C1's rendering is otherwise so much nicer.

I agree with a kind of sadness. When announced “Now support Fujifilm cameras and styles”
No exclusions were named you had it find it in the small print somewhere on the Phase One website.
I hear the same mistake again in the video, no exclusions made.
To be honest after downloading supported raw files from DP Review, it works great.
I upgrade to an XE-3 shortly but I won’t switch, I have 1000’s of older files and the rendering of skin tones is not to my taste at all.

Yes. I just bought an x-t3 and the files looked horrible in LR. Epecially the sharpening. After some searching around I found and tried Cap One and was blown away. So much so I bought the Pro version to use with my Canon files.
I'm not pleased at all with Cap One and the Canon files. To my eye the RAW conversion looks awful compared to LR. I'm new to Cap One so I'm probably doing something wrong as most people seem to love Cap One.

Also a little bit frustrating in C1 is the (De-)Noise panel: I can't get the good results as in Lightroom. Whatever I tried and do Lightroom's results are always better. I watched so many C1 tutorials to achieve better results but sill not so much luck in that regard.

Would love a session on the colour wheels. How to use them to correct colours, not make wild colour changes. EG my Nikon’s usually have yellow biased greens and need to be corrected in Capture 1 - works ok in other editors. I have made custom camera profiles for use in Capture that do help significantly.
Also, if you have a line to Phase, how do we create shortcut keys to edit in photoshop and open in photoshop. The edit in was available a few versions ago but has been taken away. The open in has never had short cut key ability. This is a major announce for round tripping into photoshop. Can only do it via menus.

as a photography teacher Lightroom / CR is the editing standard in a lot of schools. I usually don’t recommend starting students to step into Capture1 because of the not so welcoming interface and all the extra editing tools. As a professional photographer though, I use Capture1 as my base editing software. It extracts so much more information out of my files and most importantly of all the RAW editing software available, Capture1 gives me the opportunity to create my style of editing. That is the main key of chosing your base RAW editing software.

I switched from LR to C1 a year ago when i bought a Sony A7R3 and i absolutely love it (i had to rearrange the panels though to fit my taste). The only thing i don't like is the noise reduction. I find it very weak as it blurs the image so much.

HI, love your work! I would like to know how to prep a file to export into Photoshop CC2019. I use Lightroom Classic as the prep, then finish with Photoshop. I've never used Capture One so I'm looking forward to these vids. Thanks!

Hi liove he channel especially the history and documentaries of photographers. I used to shoot alot on film but left the hobby. Just started to get involved with digital. I'm a little overwhelmed with how I should be processing my raw files. Since I'm a newbie with digital I dont know which way yo go Lr or capture. Is there any info on walking through the workflow with both programs? A little overwhelming! Lol

I downloaded the free trial yesterday evening after trying to get my camera tethered to Darktable. Got tethering working like a breeze but got desperate about exporting the files. Watched some youtube this morning and was ready for my studio shoot at 10:00. Now my pics are somewhat ready for delivery. But i will have a second look at them to see if I can improve something.
All raw developers and image editing software has a learning curve. I don’t think this one is worse.

You touched a bit on sessions vs catalogs and if possible it would be nice if you could expand upon that. I use sessions all the time because it's easy and gives me the folder structure you mentioned, makes organizing so much easier as I often work across two or three computers.

Love C1. I have a sneaky suspicious that they are working on porting it to iPad OS which would be killa.

I use C1Pro 12 for FujiFilm Camera raw files. It is intense but worth the effort. Since your doing a series could you do one to explain how to get true blacks in B&W photos, and how to fix color casts like yellow and brown. I learned about color balance some but really don’t understand how to use it yet. Black and white is my favorite any help is appreciated!!

heya ted. can you do a video on color negative reversal and the 35mm film digitization process using capture one? preferably on aps-c fuji? thanks for your consideration. 📷💓

Frankly, at first Capture One was so easy to me to look cheap... But it's definitely effective! PLUS you can move the individual photo folder anywhere, 'cause C1 system files inside it are enough for the software to rebuild your last stage of that workflow 👍 👍 👍 👍

I have just switched to Fuji after being a Nikon user for 20 years.
My current workflow is built around Lightroom. I have read that there are worming issues in LR with Fuji Raw files. I have been looking into Capture One and it looks like a great alternative. I like how C1 supports the Fuji files and offers all the Fuji film simulations.
The main thing I am missing is the option to merge HDR raw files, I know there are several HDR merge plugins available, but as far as I know, none of them let you save the merged image as a DNG or other RAW file format, losing the RAW benefits when bringing the merged image back into C1.
The alternative is to keep using LR with the Iridient X-Transformer plug-in. The downside is that LR doesn't support the Fuji system as well as C1.
I was wondering whether you have any thoughts on this and how you handle the lack of HDR merge in C1.

I would like you (from your great photography experience and knowledge) to compare C1 tools with the most common used Lightroom tools (brush, healing, sharpening, skin smooth-portrait brush, eye whiten brush, etc.), please!

Really curious about this over Lightroom , I think it would fit my workflow better. Any idea if they're ever going to do a mobile version, I do most of my stuff from mobile workflow ?

I am considering Capture One right now; growing tired of Lightroom. Looking forward to your future videos.
I think I'd like to process edits on my local drive and then move the processed files to a catalog on an external drive for storage. Instructions on how to do that would be appreciated. Importing files from Lightroom (and keeping Lightroom edits, if possible) is something I also like to see.

Yay! I really needed this. Bought the Fuji version and when I was dealing with some "difficult" Windows update and back burned the switch from Lightroom. Time to get back into it. Looking forward to stop paying Adobe.

Yay Ted! Adobe out grew me. I found Sony .arw files OOC always look better w/CaptureOne than LR. I get better results more easily. Recently I've been frustrated though. I like to make adjustments on a calibrated cheap IPS monitor and print on Canon Pro 10. Everything works great mostly..... Now when I'm working on a file with the proofing on, it gets pixilated when I magnify. If I turn off proofing that's the only way to magnify 100% clearly. I must have changed a setting unwittingly. If you can assist that'd be so good. But you can't be everybody's fixer upper either. So I summarize that I'm excited to follow your C1 instructional series like your other vids in the past. Good man, if I say so.
