  • In this photography editing tutorial, we're going to look at one of my favorite editing software applications - Capture One.
    Capture One is an incredible application for editing RAW files. Compared to Adobe Lightroom it offers much more power and options however the user interface is quite different. Here are 5 tips to get you started working in Capture One Pro faster.
    If you're used to using Adobe Lightroom, Capture One can seem like a higher learning curve. The interface is quite different, but if you learn a few basic things it can get you going quickly with photography editing.
    In this video I'll cover sessions vs catalog, the customizable interface, working tools, adjustment layers and output options.
    You can download a free trial version of Capture One here:

    I was a photoshop/lightroom guy for many years..when i made the switch from Canon to Sony i downloaded the express version and that began my love for this program...yes it has a learning curve however i now spend alot less time jumping between programs to get the results i want. Plus they contantly do informative webinars on there site when they add new features and walk you through the editing process. I must say that when they added layers and now luminosity adjustments i never turned back...really guys give it a shot its the most professional software i have ever used.

    This is an excellent video. I learned more in 13 minutes than in a couple of hours trudging through trying to figure Capture One out on my own. Never having used either, I tried Capture One because of the free 30 day trial. I don't know anything about Lightroom and I may not ever find out at this rate. Not sure if the learning curve is easier with Lightroom but your tutorial is making me lean towards Capture One.

    One really handy feature of Output is that you can create your own process recipes, as well as outputing the same photograph(s) to multiple sizes and places which one click. For example, I've got one created that is sized for Instagram and outputs to a Google Drive folder. I can send a photo there at the same time I'm sending a print version for a client, as well as web version for my website. Spend 5 minutes setting custom process recipes up once, and then you;ll save a lot of time whenever you output.

    I used to hate Capture One in the past because how complicated it is, but then ever since I started shooting in the studio with the tethered setup, Capture One became my favorite. Although I don’t like its spotting tool very much, I’d rather shoot, edit and export from Capture 1 then doing the critical editing in Photoshop.

    • @markshirley01

      Yes, I do, I really like the color correction tool in C1 cause it comes in color wheel form rather than hue bars in Adobe apps. In Photoshop I mostly use it for spotting and layer mask.

    Many thanks for the introduction! The first questions which came up: 1. Can you easily move content of the session folders to a catalog? 2. Can you search for keywords across all sessions? 3. Is Capture One also available for Android? 4. What are the features one could need in Lightroom and can't find it in Capture One? 5. What are the features to assign keywords to the pictures? In LR you can add keywords that already include detailed keywords. 6. Do you know if there are any plans to integrate the great Map function into Capture One? Looking forward to see more about Capture One. Great channel. Love to watch it. Kind regards from Bavaria, Germany!

The other thing I worry about is lack of iPad app. How do you manage your files while traveling? My current travel workflow is that I import to lightroom on my iPad and then do the culling there. Then when I get home I import to my desktop and external hard drive. Any similar workflows using C1 while traveling? Thanks for any input.

    One thing you hadn't mentioned that I thought was brilliant is version/pricing. If you don't need the full CaptureOne experience, but need the basic Lightroom styled tools, you can get a slightly slimmer version of the software (that has everything you showed) that is specific to your camera for ~1/10 the price. I got the Sony version that does all this and more, but it's specific to Sony cameras. I thought that was an awesome way of helping people out.

      Cole Runnels I don’t think that’s an advantage. Over the years I’ve used many different cameras and a cool thing to do is to open old raw files with new versions of raw converters as the get better an you may in fact be surprised how your raw files from 10yrs agora look now.

      If someone is just starting out in photography with a Sony cam, it's fantastic. Free version of Capture One for Sony shooters? Who does that??? Upgrade to the Sony Pro version for $79? Yeah, cool.

    • @MatthewSaville
      @MatthewSaville 6 лет назад +2

      Yeah, that "advantage" ONLY exists for Sony users, Canon / Nikon / Fuji / Pentax shooters don't get that perk, and unfortunately while we're on the topic, Phase One still has a vendetta against Pentax since they make a competing medium format camera, and AFAIK Fuji's medium format digital camera is still an unknown; hopefully Phase One decides to play nice with all other medium format cameras in the long run...
      Many Many full-frame shooting pros / hobbyists are switching to Sony, though, so that particular caveat is becoming moot for all of them lol...

  • @storysupport
    @storysupport 6 лет назад

    C1 is an en vogue topic.
    Most things that I hear about what people like & dont is more a reflection of their individual decisions on how to use it.
    In LR, you can simply export folders from the one large catalogs into smaller catalogs per project. This serves as a great “to do” list when you’re actually completing work for a client. For things you want to always have access to, there are collections. That’s the same functionality you described in C1.

    Also, a topic suggestion: can you show us how to make photos look more interesting in post. Mine always turn out bland (especially landscapes / architecture)...

  • @kevviekevvie8440
    @kevviekevvie8440 3 года назад

    I know this is old but feel still relevant. I have used capture one for about 8 years now. There are still things LR can do the COP can't such as HDR and Pano stitching so you need LR for those functions or any other 3rd party application.
    I never keep JPGs on my system or in files as I feel if I need a JPG I just export one. But part of my work flow is to save the TIFF files in my output folder so if a i need an image it is there. Like Lightroom if you then select go edit in Photoshop from the main browser then save it in Photoshop, it places the saved file in with the RAW images. You then have to transfer that file to your output folder very painful. So I set up a export recipe that saves the TIFF in the output folder and opens Photoshop automatically, then when finished in Photoshop its saved in the output folder. As long as your recipe is ticked its as simple as pressing CTRL-D all done in one action.
    Hope this makes sense lol.

Just a note on the lightroom catalogue thing ... i usualy create a new catalogue in the folder of the picture i want to edit, so pretty much works like a session ... i have the lightroom catalogue in the same folder with the pictures in it and that makes it easy to transfert as well so not really much difference there ...

    Hello Ted!
    I`ve been using Capture One Pro for almost 6 months now and I am really enjoying it! It`s WAY easier to work in the studio than Lightroom, but I still don't know how to calibrate the ICC with the colours from my color checker (x-rite passport). Using color checker with Lightroom is very easy, but I don't see any option to use it with Capture One and since I shoot a lot of fashion, I really need some accurate colours. If possible, could you make a tutorial about that? Thanks man! Love your channel!

    Great quick start! I wish C1 had a "quick edit" solution, maybe I am missing it. I want to simply snag an image on my desktop then re-output it to the desktop...nothing more. Having to mess with Sessions is a nuisance. Pshop does this easily. Did I miss the solution to this?

    How is Capture One compared to On 1 Photo Raw for Fuji users? Your recommendations?

    I've been hoping you'd cover Capture One! I bought the Sony version and I'm loving it. The one feature that I have yet to figure out is the spot removal tool. I can't seem to get Capture one to work well for this or healing and cloning. If you could include a couple of seconds to this in a video you're making it would be great!

    Ted, I am having difficulty grasping the crop function of Capture one. Can you do a video on basics like cropping. It isn't like lightroom and I just don't get it.

    I've always used Lightroom using an external drive to hold my all my catalogues/images. I'm brand new to Capture One and I would like to use an external drive for this as well. Any tutorials available on how to set this up? Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the video. I used Capture One about 10 years ago and am just picking it back up now. Yes, it's grown a lot since my last time using it.
    I have a question around the importing function... is this essential or can I use Adobe Bridge to open files for editing and then import them back over to the folder within Bridge again. (this is how I was working with ACR) Also, with he interface, can I drag elements around so that the editing tools are on the right hand side and the image thumbnails are on the left? Thanks!
    Gemma :)

    I noticed recently that Capture One opens and can playback my Sony video files. I am wondering though, can I color correct video files? It seems as though all the options are grayed out.

    Can you try the Fuji raw files on C1 vs LR and tell us what you prefer?
