    The problem is that, unless you wear very, very loose pants, no reasonable camera will fit a pocket really without being distracting, and once you take a small bag with you, it will fit a full frame body with a compact lens as well without any problem. I tried various combinations (including Ricoh, Fuji, even an Panasonic MFT) and, at least for me, no one of them really worked. So I ended up with my trusty Nikon Z6ii + a Voigtländer Nokton 40mm f/1.2 as my compact package. When I want an AF-lens, I take Nikon’s 40 f/2.

      This is kind of where I landed as well. I have a Z7II, Z5, and now a Z FC. The Z7II and Z5 are exactly the same size, and the Z FC is only a little smaller. I work in IT and always have a laptop bag of some sort and it’s transitioned from regular laptop bags, to smaller photo bags with the Z FC (I just prefer it for some reason), the 24-200, a 40/2, and then an adapted Canon FD 28/2.8. By the time I had a bag for the laptop, flash drives, and charger, may as well use a photo bag. Ended up with a WANDRD Pvrke 31…. I don’t ever miss anything, but as you said, I can at that point fit the Z7II if I wasn’t worried about getting mugged…

    I too am a "boring sod" and don't get a lot of value out of having an EDC camera. But for me that's not the reason to own a GR3-the real benefit is in the "lad's trip" scenario. There are just certain times when it's not socially acceptable to have a big camera, but you want better quality than your phone. The GR series lets you bring a top-tier camera into those situations. For me, that's why it's worth owning one. (Incidentally, I've found the 40mm GR IIIx is more useful in those scenarios, because it's better for portraits-but that's just my personal preference.)

      100% this is the main appeal of the Ricoh, family dinners, date nights etc. It's the camera you bring when you either don't want the annoyance of carrying a camera with you or annoy anyone else by whipping out a massive camera setup

    I see the Ricoh GR as a modern interpretation of the old film point and shoot cameras. Would you have taken that with you all the time? No. But for certain occasions you would have put it in your pocket. Or you would go out and buy a single use one. Old times... That purpose now seems to be occupied by smartphones but a dedicated camera is still something I go for. People (and I don't mean strangers on the street but rather family and friends) seem to react differently to it. My guess is that it does not have a direct internet access makes it less intrusive...

    Hi Goughie, first of all I love your channel - your videos are very relatable to a hobbyist like me. The message in this video in particular is very important especially for people considering splashing out for the Ricoh or X100V. I started my photography journey a few years ago with X100V and to be honest while I loved the experience of using 'a real camera' I rarely loved the results out of it. Even when I got better at understanding the camera I realized the photos out of the X100V in particular rarely inspired me and they somehow always looked like they could have been taken with a quality modern phone camera. Nevertheless the X100V experience made me realize what I love shooting most (portraits, landscapes and occasional travel documentaries) and I decided to exchange it for X-E4 and buy interchangeable lenses. I have never regeretted selling the X100V and it is unlikely for me to buy another EDC camera anytime soon. The Leica Q3 could be tempting, but is way above my budget and it still seems to me more like a luxury device focused more on the enjoyment of photography rather than the actual results. I totally related to what you said about wishing you had a camera for a particular moment and that the camera you wished you had most likely would not be your EDC. I currently have the GFX 50SII with gf 63 and 100 and the results I am getting are mindblowing to me. Surely the experience of shooting is far less enjoyable and the times I have the camera with me are much more rare and deliberate - but in my current perspective I value the results from my photography more than the experience. In any case lovely photos from the Ricoh and keep up the cool videos!

    I carry my EDC (a Sony APS-C) in my car trunk for “shoot w/intent” trips and “lucky finds”. Pocket cam resides on my smartphone, a high end Samsung (too big for pocket, so wear on belt-mounted pouch) - stellar IQ, focal length flexibility and on-board editing.
    Have a GRIII that I take for “street shooting” with intent - still too big for pocket, IMO. Old joke take-off: “Is that a GRIII in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?”😂 Too much pocket lint, too, that might get into cam by the by, not to mention misc stuff that might mar a camera.

Having two is so much nicer than to switching lenses on a single camera. Most of the time I come home without anything amazing, but not always. Sometimes I get something good. Being a Sony shooter I have felt the need for a small camera for a ever day carry. Recently I splashed out and bought a Q3 and now do carry it with me most of the time and love it. As you said sometime you just need that longer Len’s. The cropping in with the Q3 is ok but lacks the compression

    • @clonkex
      @clonkex Год назад

      Cropping is the same as zooming as long as you crop to the centre of the image, ignoring resolution and clarity loss of course. The background compression will be identical.

      @@clonkexOne can zoom into an image by cropping but that is not the same as using a zoom lens. An image taken with a 35mm lens will always have the characteristics of a 35mm lens. Cropping in to 75mm equivalent will not have the same characteristics as that taken with a 75mm lens.

    • @clonkex
      @clonkex Год назад

      @@mdw1927 Of course, the image will be affected by the characteristics of the lens you choose, but that's not specifically down to the focal length. If two lenses were identical other than focal length, ignoring resolution issues, cropping would give an identical result to using the longer lens. I'm not saying that, in practice, the two are exactly equivalent, but I am saying the amount of compression will be the same assuming you crop to the exact centre.

    • @mdw1927
      @mdw1927 Год назад

      @@clonkexGranted when you crop an image with a 35mm lens to the 75mm equivalent the field of view will be the same as that of the same image taken with a 75mm lens, assuming both are at the same aperture. However compression, ie the illusion that background images appear closer in a photo is a function of focal length.

    • @clonkex
      @clonkex Год назад

      @@mdw1927 Try it for yourself. Stand the same distance from a subject and take a photo with each focal length, then crop the wider image to the same FOV. They should look nearly the same, including background compression. The reason for compression is that the longer the lens, the closer it gets to a theoretical orthographic lens, where everything appears the same size regardless of distance. It's directly correlated to FOV, so by cropping the image you achieve the exact same effect.
