I think you are partly right. Ip man in general holds back since he doesn't fight to seriously injure unless the other does it first and is a threat to him. Most martial arts fighters know how to seriously injure someone so they will know what moves they should avoid. When ip man faced 10 black belts in the first movie he went to hurt them so every blow he made was to seriously injure or cripple them. When he faced a small army in ip man he didn't seriously hurt anyone because they were stupid teenagers. He wants to see how strong the ones he fights are most of the time but how and if he will finish the fight depends on his opponents' actions and skills regardless of them doing underhanded moves.
@@johnwinchesterp2963 Wasn't he forced to fight the black belts like that? I thought it was a situation where they'd be killed if they didn't fight until injury or death. As for Ip Man, his family was at the same risk. Unless I'm remembering it wrong and mixing movies/shows.

Donnie Yen did an incredible job in the Ip Man series of movies. His martial arts are spectacular, his portrayal of Ip Man is compelling and he obviously does this fight scene very well. His wife softly telling him 'Don't break the furniture' as her official permission for him to fight this master -- is priceless and is one of the great one-liners in any film of any genre.
There's a reason that this fight is one of my all-time favorite martial arts fights. You truly get the sense that these two are actually evenly matched.
I love how Ip got sick of his shit after the eye gouge, and just decided to end it right there. Makes you wonder if Ip's opponent *actually* had a chance, or if Ip was just humoring him
I always say it more like Ip took advantage of Chun’s error to finish the fight with flourish rather than efficiency. And we know efficiency is Ip’s bread and butter. Could have done many things to take advantage of the situation, such as aim for a part of the body Ip would have a harder time seeing, anything below his eye level, such as a leg sweep or body shots. But Chun decides to go for the headshot, literally maintaining his attack right at Ip’s eye level. Chun believed the fight to be over and wanted to end it with and offensive statement rather than efficiency. If Chun ever learned to adapt after that and avoid those errors, he’d be unstoppable.
@@just4justincase Are you saying only Chun could/would adapt thus becoming unstoppable?...nah they both would have adapted after this fight and Ip would still be ahead imo
Every time I watch this I feel like Ip Man was holding back until that very end. The second his eye was compromised, he took the fight with utmost seriousness and shows in how determined he was to finish it with the relative ease that he did.
Creo algo parecido, por eso deja a un costado las armas luego que su oponente las pierde. Pot otro lado, no alcanzo a ver exactamente qué puntos de acupuntura golpea para ver semejante afloje del oponente. Excelente coreografía!
Did anyone notice that the core style of Wing Chun is displayed perfectly here... Wing Chun means that with every defense move there HAS to be an offense move as well... It was so perfectly portrayed by the choreographer here that when either of them took a blow they made sure that the opponent also took a blow... Its a pretty basic concept that if u want to strike someone in a fight, then u HAVE to surrender your guard, even if it's for a millisecond... And that's exactly what Wing Chun specialises in dealing with, that as soon as the opponent strikes, u strike back, while his guard is at its lowest... These subtle details are what make this movie a masterpiece and I cant help but point it out...
A friend and i used to practice some basic wingchun, many many years ago, gave me some goosebumpy flashbacks. This fight has it all and showcases the core as you say - perfectly. Rolling hands, kicks stay below waist, no overreaching, sink-stance (
Good observation but wing chun philosophy as far as I understand is to try NOT to take any punishment...at all. James demile said it perfectly when he met Bruce Lee he thought it was a joke and he would destroy him with his power and overwhelming size/force. He would've if he connected but he said Bruce was to fast. Demile also said never go hit for hit because a good boxer or conditioned karateka can take more punishment than you could give. I think WC seeks centerline upon interference using bridging/chi sao to trap and or blast thru and just hammer so as to not let a superior fighter regain his bearing and beat WC man down...imo. But ya I agree its a beautiful fight scene showcasing so many different techniques in WC! JKD and WC are amazing !!
Only partly. no such thing happens in any martial arts that you get sudden power up after your eye is poked. if he had that advantage before, he would have shown.
Ip wasn't trying to hurt Chun so much as demonstrate that his technique was superior. Chun using that technique was a demonstration of no holds barred, which is why Ip ended the fight immediately after it was used. That said, Scott Adkins was ruthless and willing to literally break another person in Ip Man 4, so Ip gave no quarter. The devastating throat jab at the end really demonstrated that much.

I don't actually think Ip Man was sandbagging in this fight like some folks are saying (he's got the sleeves rolled up before it even starts), but the eye gouge is definitely the reason Master Z lost - after the eye gouge he got too aggressive and one-dimensional trying to quickly end the fight before Ip Man recovered, and Ip took advantage by feigning weakness long enough to slip a counter-attack through his aggression
But other than his ego, Cheung Tin Chi is a really worthy opponent for Ip man.He also has a really kind heart as he fights Frank's thugs by Ip Man's side two times.
As someone else pointed out. If you notice the beginning of the of their fight it seems they were close but ip man had the edge. For example his stick was a bit longer in the end and he lost one of his blades instead of two. And in their hand to hand combat for a while they seemed to trade the same blows to each other. Ip man was better but his opponent was very close to his level.
@@Veryzuia if you consider chung defeated batista's character in ip man legacy who was a physical beast like twister but more of a wrestler then most likely chung could have defeated twister if they had fought.

The cinematography in this clip is *spectacular.* Even without seeing the rest of the movie, you know without a doubt that these are two absolute *masters* of their arts, evenly matched. By showing how effortlessly their weapons smash through hardwood and concrete, you are shown that they are both deadly and used with full force. The shots switch between close in and zoomed out as needed, moving organically around the fighters to make you feel like you are right there. Unlike with many action movies, the editors didn't drop everything into a food processor and spit out a dozen cuts a second that leaves the audience confused as to what is going on. (The Jason Bourne fights come instantly to mind as one of the worst examples.) Here, the cuts happen exactly when needed to inform the audience exactly as to what is going on, following the flow of the story. Bravo.
yes and watch how he stops his fists at the end with a paralyze technique under his arm which left his arm up high and he couldnt bring it down, which left him open to the 1 inch punch that ended it
This is one of the greatest final fights in a martial arts movie ever. I don't get people who claim that "oh the Ip Man movies got worse and worse with each one." I like this fight more than ANYTHING in the first movie. The action, the choreography, the editing, the music, the core of Wing Chun being shown from two different approaches, the story leading up to this epic confrontation, etc, it all blends so well to culminate in this awesome fight.
I kind of understand both sides. This battle is no doubt one of the best martial arts fighting (in my opinion) but I also couldn't remember most of the rest of the movie (only the fact that Ip man fight Tyson, and I am not even sure if it is from this movie or its prequel). On the other hand I can clearly remember most of the plot of Ip Man 1, even though the ending fight may not be as good as this.
I didn’t care for the 3rd even then the fights were still good and the story was just as entertaining I think mike Tyson made it feel like a money grab in ip man’s name which rubbed me personally the wrong way
Honestly it's kinda ridiculous from a wing Chun perspective. Literally NOBODY would break out into chi sau in the middle of a fight. Plus the dodging blindly thing at the end...did he suddenly become spiderman? In wing Chun you may not have to look directly at the opponent to figure out where he is/ what he's doing. But there has to be a bridge connected somewhere, we don't just gain ultra instinct
@@danielfolks6997 When you're at Ip Man's level, your stance isn't just to fight but you train your instinct too and you can predict where the hits would be. in most Chinese martial arts be it Wing Chun, Hongkeun, Baguaquan or even Baji, they train you the basics first but then they train your instinct to predict where the hits are coming from. It's an advanced technique that you'll mostly see in Eastern martial arts. I have actually received such trainings in kendo where you're blindfolded and you have to tone down your heartrate and breathing rate to focus on the surroundings and listen to the wind crackle from the shinai and then retaliate or at least parry the incoming swings at you. That's one of the fundamentals on how you can get your 5th or 6th Dan (Basically Sensei status) for Kendo.
You can feel ip man matching his energy Ip man has so much respect for his enemy that he wants a fair fight Once he gets eye gouged he demonstrates his true skills. Truly a teacher and a master at the same time!
"It's astounding! This mortal really is something else! Look at that brilliant form! There can be no doubt! This is the true power! Complete in all its majesty! This is..AUTONOMOUS...ULTRA INSTINCT!"
This is a good fight for each character. Yes it's an Offensive Wing Chun vs a defensive Wing chun but there's more to it. Master Z feels himself as someone hard done by life and is envious of Ip mans fame and popularity. Ip man has just lost his wife and is just frustrated with the way life keeps pushing him when he just wants to be in peace. They're parallels to eachother and you can really see it in the movie and this fight.
at this point I believe he did not yet lose his wife. She is standing hidden behind a wall as a listener to this fight. Nevertheless Cheung Wing-sing has cancer at that point. Something paralel with the real Cheung Wing-sing who was separated from Yip Man after she returned to China for ID cards and the borders between China and Hong-Kong closed... Leaving Cheung Wing-sing to die from cancer without the presence of Yip Man.
Uhm IP Mans wife was still alive when this fight happened, at least in the movie. She was sitting out front waiting for him to finish. Watch the movie...
One of the best fights in martial arts movies. Been a long time fan of the genre. The way they try to take their own tempo shows so clearly. Very well done.
I love how you can watch both fighters test each other out and are dead even. Each time one gets the upper hand they immediately lose it and then the other gains it. One lands a strike the other immediately lands a similar strike. Just awesome to watch. The speed at which both men were able to move and still accurately swing and block was incredible. Two masters of their craft

i am not sure how fight scenes in movies work. i know its practiced alot and but to remember all the moves in the timing is insane. maybe its sped up and slowed down and spliced up/cut scene then blinded together to make one fueled fight. got to give props to the actors and camara team for making it look so real even tho its not
I mean, It's obviously not realistic because someone is definitely going to get cut or stabbed when dueling with blades or striking each other through pieces of wood. I personally prefer seeing scenes inwhich characters engaging in combat results in visible injuries but I will admit, it is great to see the level of talent that it takes to make fake fighting look as visually-incredible as it can possibly get. Some martial arts films are hit and miss when it comes to choreography but the Ip Man series is particularly good, mostly due to Donnie Yen's ability.
I find it very interesting and funny that Donnie Yen basically has to be blind first to show that he doesn't see the punches, he only has to feel them, in order to then show that he can defeat the opponent with just a few punches and finally with a really hard one to his knees. I absolutely put this fight among top 10 best martial art fights ever created in cinema. It's tense, and brutal, and both the actors and head choreographer, Yen Woo Ping deserved the acknowledgment they got when this movie came out! I do disagree on one thing when people say they are both evenly matched. When you look at the fight more closely: 1st match with the sticks: Even. As they both broke their sticks at the same time. I would argue that this was also the match where they were testing each other out more than actually fighting. 2nd match with the butterfly swords: Ip Man won this one as he disarmed Master Z earlier 3rd match, hand to hand: Ip Man was pushing as Master Z is pushed hard and Ip gets in more hits Z does, leading Z to use dirty tricks like the eye-gouging move. This leads Ip man to end the battle quite quickly. So I would say that IP Man, regardless of this fight, is a better martial artist then Master Z. That said, I would also say that Master Z was his toughest opponent in all the movies.
I will have to disagree that Master Z was his toughest fight. You're forgetting his boxing match in the second one where he took the most hits he ever taken.
Yuen Woo Ping’s choreography in this scene is nothing short of BRILLIANT. The technical aspects of techniques leading to techniques from basic pak sao lap sao to chi sao to advanced bui ji was seamlessly fluid even when witnessed at high speeds from a Wing Chun perspective. I do digress. However, Wing Chun, unless MASTERED and even then, depending on the practitioner is extremely vulnerable against other “boxing” based striking systems. Which is the PRIMARY reason Bruce Lee developed Jun Fan / Jeet Kun Do Kung Fu. He had not mastered the complete Wing Chun system (footwork) in particular, for several reasons. However, in my experience in combining Wing Chun with various striking systems and employing boxing / jeet kun do footwork Wing Chun techniques are FORMIDABLE in close quarter / in - fighting combat, not so much in sporting competition for it’s greatest components are ILLEGAL. P.S. I would not want to combat a legitimate Wing Chun master. It is truly lethal, so is Bruneian Silat.. #MaulMorniesilat
@Rezza Prasetyo Setiawan Silat is the collective term for a class of indigenous martial arts from the Nusantara and surrounding geocultural areas of Southeast Asia. It’s style is distinguished from country to country and clan to clan within those countries. It is traditionally practised in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Southern Thailand, Southern Philippines and Southern Vietnam. I’m partial to Bruneian and Phillipino Silat because of it’s Wing Chun “like”similarities which compliment and flow, superbly and easily, with and into Wing Chun techniques. However, ALL Silat is deadly. Fyi, Sifu / Guru Dan Inosanto, Bruce Lee’s former student, now distinguished master incorporated Philippino Silat into his Jun Fan / Jeet Kun Do.
Jeet Kune Do was never a somplete martial art because Bruce died way too young to complete it. We also know more today about fighting than Bruce did back then even though he was ahead of his time. JKD guys today are getting destroyed by everyone especially boxers.
Bruce Lee would just be amazed at the fight scenes in Donny Yen films, so well choreographed. Especially the Ip Man series cause Ip was Bruce's teacher.
I think one thing that stands out to me in IP Man is how the shots are framed. So many movies these days overtly rely on jump cuts and shaky camera work, IP Man seems to prefer almost always keep the camera very focused on the main actors and I respect that a lot. 3:35 doesn't need cuts or fancy camera work, it just holds up on it's own.
I don't think there is anyone else who could have perfected the Ip-Man character better than Donnie Yen ...guy is the best around and has the most Calm face. I love his confidence and fighting style .Mike Tyson can tell you all about it 😁

But Chun decides to go for the headshot, literally maintaining his attack right at Ip’s eye level. Chun believed the fight to be over and wanted to end it with and offensive statement rather than efficiency. If Chun ever learned to adapt after that and avoid those errors, he’d be unstoppable.
what we had here was a good ol anime asspull, where the antagonist disables the protag only to find out it actually unlocks the protags secret art.
@@just4justincase Are you saying only Chun could/would adapt thus becoming unstoppable?...nah they both would have adapted after this fight and Ip would still be ahead imo

Oh shut up nerd
@@CoolAsianGuy why?
The sound effects around the one inch punch…like he powered up for it or something. Badass
That eye poke technique, he used it against Scott Adkins in Ip man 4,lol
he evolved and its valid to defeat much stronger opponent
That technique is called Biu Jee (thrusting/ darting fingers) and is the third empty hand form in Wing Chun.
Because Ip Man learns from his mistakes
Ip wasn't trying to hurt Chun so much as demonstrate that his technique was superior. Chun using that technique was a demonstration of no holds barred, which is why Ip ended the fight immediately after it was used. That said, Scott Adkins was ruthless and willing to literally break another person in Ip Man 4, so Ip gave no quarter. The devastating throat jab at the end really demonstrated that much.
He learned it from Pai Mei.
I like how he immediately went ultra instinct after being blinded in one eye
He know his moves as his, the punch is his own.

Bravo.

When you look at the fight more closely:
1st match with the sticks: Even. As they both broke their sticks at the same time. I would argue that this was also the match where they were testing each other out more than actually fighting.
2nd match with the butterfly swords: Ip Man won this one as he disarmed Master Z earlier
3rd match, hand to hand: Ip Man was pushing as Master Z is pushed hard and Ip gets in more hits Z does, leading Z to use dirty tricks like the eye-gouging move.

#MaulMorniesilat
from a cinematic perspective I thought this film's choreography wasn't as good as from the first film
@nate I’d say even better, the techniques were more advanced which makes, making it seem natural even more difficult
isn't Silat from Indonesia?
@Rezza Prasetyo Setiawan
Silat is the collective term for a class of indigenous martial arts from the Nusantara and surrounding geocultural areas of Southeast Asia.

If you're ever asked, which super hero you'd most like to be, Iron Man, Hulk, Batman, I'd probabley say Ip Man because he never lost a fight
that's because its just a movie lol
@@edmondYJ Is it though?
@@edmondYJ marvel not a movie.. 🤣 🤣
@@edmondYJ yea no shi🤦
@@edmondYJ It's literally based in real life. Ip Man existed.
Ип Ман: Можно все что угодно, только не в глаз!
This fight scene is very pleasing to the ears. Props to the Foley department.
I find most martial arts films incredibly intricate! These fight scenes are beautiful to watch, the level of technical skill displayed is truly mind blowing!!
This is one of my favourite action scenes from the Ip Man series yet you hardly ever see it uploaded in a Donnie Yen sequence. So thank you for this am going to enjoy it ❤❤
Я и мой кот, когда остался один кусочек колбасы:
🤣🤣🤣👍
Абы бы ото что-то сморозить.
One of the best hand to hand fights I ever seen
Wonderful, Chân Tử Đan 🥰❤️👍
The fact he didn't bleed from mouth or get sent to hospital after getting hit by not 1 but 2 one inch punches... Master Z is a tank man
Or maybe it's because one inch punch is bullshit lol. Wing chun will get you killed in real life
@@allwoundup3574 😂 damn dude
@@allwoundup3574 any sort of fighting will get u killed welcome to 2022
Ever thought it's because it's a load of shit?
@@nugget7865 Except it isnt. Those hits are going for the solar plexus, with enough force you can stop the heart or deflate a lung or break the ribs.. With enough force all three. Its a lethal blow at the best of times abd is considered an illegal move in most competitive martial arts. However, since the eye gouge and the blades are speaking to a more traditional fight those hits were fair.
5:18 how you dream of punching your boss
5:22 but in reality...
So damn true 😁😁😁😂😂😂😂😂
The man who trained Bruce Lee played by the last disciple OF Bruce Lee. Very honorific.
No such thing
Actually Donnie yen trained with last surviving son of IP Man.
@@Mrkhan-oy8sj Wow, I was indeed wrong. I apologize for this. I looked it up, and indeed "He worked hard and studied Wing Chun under Ip Man's eldest son, Ip Chun, for 9 months before tackling the role." He did study Jeet Kun Do, Lee's style for some of his roles, but never with the man himself. How unfortunate.
Ip Man taught Bruce Lee and Ip Chun making them student brothers. Ip Chun went on to teach Donnie which makes Bruce Lee his master uncle.
I don't think I could ever love a movie more, then i see yet another clip and it's enough to make me re-watch all over again.
