Raven-Symone is best known for starring in the Disney Channel's That's So Raven, for playing Olivia on The Cosby Show, and for that time she sang an awkward duet with Julie Andrews in the Princess Diaries sequel. Now she can add "making confusing statements about race" to her resumé-- right next to "having amazing hair." Subscribe for more videos! full.sc/NfhdwD

She's NOT African-American, she's an American who also happens to be black. That's it. She's not saying "I'm not black" she's saying "I'm not African-American" 2 completely different things

+Marc Walker black is an all encompassing term because not all people who are black have roots that are African

    • @TheFunny82
      @TheFunny82 9 лет назад +1

+DatVideoDoe....i totally disagree! Black is defined as it is, an individual with African descent. I don't classify, and most people don't classify all individuals who are of darker complexion black. It's totally based upon descent!
Your argument is invalid because Raven-Symone is of African decent but chooses to label herself as an American who happens to be Black! Somewhere down the line ignorant people have become to equate African American as black. In some cases that isn't quite true.
In Raven-symone case she is and always will be American but of African descent.

A blue eyed, blond hair woman who was born in the U.S from European parents, is simply called and referred to as an "American" from people all over the world
    She isn't called "European-American"
But when a woman with African origins, born in the U.S and stems from a family with generations born in the U.S, she is called "African-American"
Are the two women different types of American?
Both carry the U.S nationality, and no one is less or more American than the other.

exactly! And what about people who are not even from Africa at all. Like none of their relatives came from there. Why in the world would we call them African American in the first place. None of it makes sense. Why don't we just start calling everyone in America Pangaean American lol. Everyone came from there at some point right?

Juliet Waleya theres no point to be called african American. Because in africa black Americans colored or mixed because they cant relate to tribes. We have mixed blood. Since American is a nation any born should called American. Just like a black man born in england is reffered to as a Englishmen. true african Americans are born in africa then move to usa

She didn't deny being black, she says she doesn't want to be labeled African American. That's what I've been saying my entire life. What little African genes I did inherit are so far back in generations that it would barely show that I have family from Africa just because that's how long ago it's been since I've had a living, actual African-American family member. I'm multiracial and I don't see anyone asking if I'm European American. I'm just American

I get what Raven was saying. Being born in Britain I would not be labelled a "African-Brit" but a Brit. But America seems to love labels, though its the melting pot of the world. I think "black twitter" got into a bit of a wooha about it because they assumed she was denying her blackness as Africa is normally associated with black, but I do not think thats what Raven was doing she was just saying shes an American, like I am a Brit. Not an African-American.

Its so strange to see how the very people (like Oprah) who preach so much about inclusivity and treating everybody as humans/the same be so obsessed over race and trying so hard to differentiate themselves as a separate group, and try to shame/scare those who do not conform to that idea.

  • @DontSigh

As someone non-american, I've always found the term "african-american" kind of weird. Imagine a black person whose ancestors came to America 300 years ago vs a white person whose grandparents moved there from, say, Ireland. One of them is called simply American, and the other is not. Why? Skin color.

    • @misterwallace3479

Same reason a black can't be "called racist". Same reason a black can use the "N" word and others can't. There's a lack of intellect regarding these examples.

  • @notsarahatall3164

She meant exactly what she said: She doesnt want to be labeled.
Ergo, she doesnt want to belong in one box.
She feels her world is open, and wants the freedom to change her mind and spirit whenever she wants.
She feels like if she calls herself "Black" or "Gay" she will only be able to be black and gay, and not white and straight (i know she cant physically become white, but you know...).
I personally think she said it in the wrong way, but i get her point. She should have said "Im an open spirit, and I fly wherever i want to go. Therefore im neither gay or straight, black or white, or anything else. I may or may not be what other people think i am. I am what I choose to be in that moment, but its not something that may last forever. I am free."

    • @josephrainer
      @josephrainer 10 лет назад +3

I DO get what Raven is trying to say, but IMO, I think it just send the inverse message as regards to the fact that she's gay. Ok, she doesn't wanna be called "african-american" because white people aren't called "european-americans". But in today's society, we need to show people, especially younger people like kids, that it's ok to be gay, to be a homossexual. I think that, by she saying "I refuse to be called gay", she may pass the impression that she doesn't wanna be associated with the "cause", if we can call it that, or somehow has shame of admiting she's homossexual in some way.
Either if it's the term "gay" or the label itself, I think that trying to move away from people saying "Raven has a lesbian/gay/homossexual relationship" hurts her more than does justice to her "Fight the labels" message.

It is a confusing name. Many people who are called this are not from Africa. I always wondered how those people feel about being identified as something they are not just because they have a certain skin colour. That is dumb. Also she is probably talking about labels in general and not my confusion but seriously America I do not understand this label at all.

Raven may not want to be called gay, and that's her thought process. However, we live in a world where we have words to describe things. Her sexual orientation is what we call gay. For example, I am a man who is attracted to women, and therefore I am...yep you guessed it...straight. I agree with her views on African American. She is not one. I could take it a step further too. She is not black.

    • @user-zs5of5en5o

Incorrect. If you are "straight" and you have a crush on a person who is the same sex as you, lol, guess what...lmao. Y the mind games? Seriously. If you are gay claim it. I don't agree with that lifestyle but it's just my opinion. Stop moving or fading the line. It is what it is. Im black and im American. I understand EXACTLY what she's saying. We are all so quick to call ourselves African-Americans even though the bloodlines get thinner and thinner with each generation that descended from african slaves. Most blacks dont know 4 things about true african heritage, And present day native africans actually HATE the fact we as americans label ourselves as african. They dont understand it. I can see why. The reason these racial prefuxes existed was to create a seperation between the natives of the land and immigrants or slaves. Last time i checked i was born here,im a native of america not africa, and if its about the "roots" of where you come from, i have yet to hear a white person call themselves EUROPEAN-American. So leave this woman alone!! Lol

Yes, I understand what she was saying. I don't agree with it, but I get it. I'm sure she is tired of labels because she wants to be an individual, known as herself, not known as that black girl, or that lesbian, or probably even that cosby kid. She's probably trying to avoid the stress faced when dealing with the negative prejudice she probably gets or expects to get from everywhere. She's completely entitled to her individuality, I just say don't let the stereotypes others put on you distract you from identifying that as a part of that is within yourself. (be proud in other words)
It's not "You're black, why aren't you playing basket ball or eating fried chicken", it's "I'm also black and I have blue hair". Don't let others put the labels on you, you define the labels for yourself. If a person wants to seriously apply stereotypes to you, saying how you fit or don't fit, that's their drama, just tell them that: ("Those are your ideas, this is who I am")
I have a friend that refuses to eat Fried Chicken (Unless it is chicken strips, unless it is buffalo wings, unless it has barbeque sauce on it... the point is, this guy loves fried chicken too), he says he hates it. Me and the rest of my buddies know the only reason he is doing it is to reject stereotypes. Look, I can give the history to the origin of Fried Chicken and Watermelon stereotypes with black people, but at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter because almost everyone loves the taste of Watermelon and/or Fried Chicken, it is a silly stereotype! Similar things with Asians and rice, almost everyone eats rice! (I know there is an asterisk in there, but the point is the same, its a silly stereotype)

I think she said it because she isn't from Africa, so she isn't technically and "African American" she has some type of African descent, but she herself isn't. It's the same as Mexicans, they don't call them selves "Mexican american" if they aren't from Mexico, they are Hispanic, and if they ask what descent they say Mexico. (Or somewhere else if they aren't Mexican) that's what I think she meant by that.

+Avril Tinubu yeah but I think what bothers Raven is that you dont see the white people doing that. "Oh im European-American" "Im Irish-American". They just say "Im American" or "Im white". Its like if you're not white you automatically have to add "Mexican" "African" or "Asian" infront because people want know where you're "REALLY" from. A lot of white people dont know their background, they just see themselves as white or American. Most of them believe they're the true Americans. And they really are seen as the true Americans. People that aren't from the US instantly picture a white person when they hear "American", but thats understandble considering the majority are whites, and we all know why that is. Raven im guessing just wants to feel American enough as the whites feel.

African American is an inconsistent term denoting a generic continent goes to continue in the colonial over generalization of a giant diverse population. There are huge differences in people from Egypt, Mozambique, and Morocco. As there are between Icelanders, Scots, and Greeks. Whites are never referred to as European Americans (a quagmire for white South Africans). It doesn't take an anthropologist to see that Raven is mixed at some point in her recent family history and she says she's American. I think the American race of biracial mixing is most appropriate since we've been calling ourselves the melting pot for the last 100 years

Well, you don't say "im African Japanese" or "White Japanese" you just say, "I'm Japanese".. It's just Americans who are oddly obsessed with race, which has NOTHING to do with nationality.
Im Latino, but I also learned recently that "Latino" isnt a race because Latin America is a REGION that can carry many different races. Thats the only time you should say (optional) "white/black/asian/or Native to that region" if you're following up with a region/content, not your nationality..

I totally understand her and where she’s coming from. She’s born and raised here yea she understands she’s black but she’s an American she was raised here. She’s not wanting to jump on the race ban wagon it’s time for people to move on and live their lives as Americans no matter what color you are. You born and raised here you r American. Everybody wanting to grab their roots from ancestors from way down the blood line and to me we all have roots else where if we really looked into it. We all probably have different race in our blood line. No matter who you are. That does nothing for the life you know and lived all your life. I don’t get deep into that like some people. I was born and raised here in the United States I know where my roots r to me my roots r where I was born and raised my parents grandparents great grandparents uncles aunts cousins and siblings that’s my roots. That’s all that matters to me I don’t give a rats ass where my roots started a 100 yrs ago

all the races born in United States of america are american, native american indians European american or African american Hispanic and Latino Americans or other
      black american does not exist
      white american does not exist
      originally Americans does not exist
America were not originally black" people or white people
if you don't know where you're from you'll have a hard time saying where you're going.
you can't know where you're going until you know where you've been.
if you don't know where you're came from you will never know where you re going.
      never forget the past.
all European Americans come from Europe and African-Americans come from Africa
      america is Indians homeland.
makes me laugh when 'white' people or 'black claim to be 'born in America'. if a dog is born in a stable, that doesnt make it a horse!....

Why are you talking about anyone going anywhere? She just wants to be known as an American...we can all see her race, just as you can see mine. But our race is not who we are. I am very proud to be white, but I never think about my race, unless someone brings it up. I am proud to be American and I am always reminded of that, each day. As for Native Americans, they need not worry about going anywhere. America is their home first...no one has forgotten that. We can not be blamed for what those before us have done to anyone...that was in the past...move on!

Working on a series that pokes fun at labels and stereotypes, I've decided that the world will try to label you and put you in categories enough, people shouldn't do it to themselves. I understand wanting to belong to a group but everyone is different and shouldn't limit themselves to preconceived notions based on appearance or preferences.

now I haven't seen the full vid with Oprah, so I could easily have misinterpreted this, but I think the point here is national ties. In the clip shown, she never says she doesn't want to be labeled as black; she isn't denying her skin color/family history/culture or anything. Raven says she'd prefer to be called American instead of African-American.
This makes complete sense. I've always been confused by the persistence of this label.
Like if you are a first generation Irish immigrant, it makes sense to call yourself Irish-American. If your family has been here 7 generations? not so much. She is denying a deep personal/political/whatever connection to the continent of Africa and any countries therein.
She is American. She is black. Why stretch that to African-American? to be more politically correct? To imply her skin color without outright saying it? That seems ridiculous.

I understand what she's saying. The way she said it came off wrong and kind of awkward. I consider myself American because I am American. I am also a black american. However I don't like the African tied to it because I do not adopt any cultures or heritage from Africa. It seems so offensive to people but it's true.

  • @majade13
