- Raven-Symoné looks back at her viral comments from 2014, including 'I'm not African American,' on her 'Tea Time' podcast. The actress reflects on her 'Oprah: Where Are They Now?' interview, after clips resurfaced following an episode of 'Real Time With Bill Maher.'

You don’t call white Americans people European Americans….so why call black American people African Americans. Raven makes perfect sense.
No, she doesn't. First of all, some people *do* call white people "European-Americans," and there's nothing wrong with that term. Also, the whole reason why Jesse Jackson promoted the term "African-American" in the first place: Other *ethnic minority groups* in American society are called mostly according to their *geographic origin,* while Black people were the only ones who were referred to simply by their skin color. If you compare it to white people, sure, it'll sound weird; but compare it to other *ethnic groups,* and it makes perfect sense.
@WestIndianAK there are black people from all over the world, not just Africa. No other country in the world has a culture of calling you by an assumed heritage first, then your current country. America has a very particular obsession & people get angry when not everyone shares the obsession. There's no logical reason she can't have her preference respected.
Hands up who's ever heard the term "European Americans" used in usual every day language ad a regular identifier lol.
@@aussiejubesthere's no such term! And RS is a 💯 RIGHT! And I salute her! It was ONLY Americans in the 30s, 40s, etc....
UNITE, not divide!
We all know that line. The problem is Raven sounded back then precisely like Tiger Woods when he said he wasn't black.
Raven would have said no to being black back then. Are you kidding me or are you kidding yourself? She comes back 10 years later and only splits hairs.
She doesn’t have to clear anything up for nobody, she was pretty clear. She’s American!
Sit this one out Karen.
But like you, she is disingenuous. She also said in that same interview that she is "a mix of many different things" which is why she didn't want to be identified as African-American. Then she went on to marry a racist white woman, who feels much like you, feels entitled to put her nose in Black people's business that doesn't concern her.
can't believe that was 10 years ago
As someone whos family is from the Caribbean i totally understand. Theres so much lables for what type of black you are in America. Its getting ridiculous, its overwhelming at times too
The fact that people are telling her that Oprah set her up is hilarious 😂
I think Oprah did! She tends to be a back stabber.
Oprah set that poor little snot nose up Cosby Kid up.
@@leslieschott754 But how?! Oprah didn't force her to say that. It's not Oprah's fault people either misunderstood what she said or thought what she said was dumb.
@@DavidKen878 With her response she did. Oprah likes to push her own agenda on racism. Like she said, Oprah could've left it there and respect her answer and move on, but she didn't. She challenged Raven's answer, knowingly what she really meant.
@@domingofung So you're saying the ONLY reason people had a problem with what she said is because of Oprah? 🤔 Yeah okay.
Well Oprah wasn't on the View and people had a problem with Raven literally every other week. So who's to blame for that?
As a black woman, I think some black ppl are tired of dealing with America’s racial construct. We are Americans! If folks want to talk about race, then yes, we are Black Americans but we are Americans.
Raven is right, I'm black and I've never been to Africa in my life.. im American,i live in America & i just happen to be brown that's it
You just happen to be brown ????!!!! No there’s a history behind that.
@@medianeroma75she or he said happen to be brown 😅😂🤣👀😅
Brown and black are two different colors
@@levent.a.7280Purposely obtuse, you.
Your roots may trace to Africa. African people are beautiful and create some of the most exquisite clothes and styles. More tend to be shown of the poverty side than the other. Still, we are all God's children, not defined by color, bit should never be ashamed either. It is important people understand where they come from. There are bad people in all races. That has to do with their personalities not their hue.
👏I completely 100% understand what she meant. Life is so much more than race and it gets annoying to keep hearing it.
Oprah agenda made it seen differently.
I was waiting for Oprah to get blamed.
Doesn't she always?
Oprah's reaction speaks a 1000 words.
Oprah need to get out her box ..colour purple is long gone ..but she Oprah wants black Americans to still keep that chain going m.. Oprah need need therapy Lady ...can't have white friends but behind closed doors you actually got a problem with white's...
Or she influenced it..
@@Lucid-1111 Oprah knew what she was doing. She likes to throw more fuel to the fire on that subject.
I grew up abroad. Someone like her would have been referred to as mixed where I grew up. Never as one race.
Plus race was almost never even talked about! The obsession with race is a particularly American thing!
“Ummm what about hammocks?” -Miranda 😂😂
I can’t look at her the same way anymore with laughing at that 😂😂
Whoopi Goldberg said the same thing in her book, "Book", from 1997 (in the chapter, "Race").
Oprah didn't set her up. Oprah just knew what was going to happen. Anyone remember when Tiger Woods labeled himself as a Caubasian, something like that? 😂 God created beautiful people .
Raven is right. I'm not indigenous, I'm a native American. Color is no matter.
Raven-Symone is free to identify as (1) a day of the week; (2) subatomic particle; or, (3) a temperature. It's completely up to her and _NOT_ worthy of any news coverage.
Had she not been so inarticulate and out-of-touch with her own community and fanbase on *Black* *Twitter,* there wouldn't have been a misunderstanding.
The fact that she made a comment on *The* *View* about refusing to hire anyone with a "ghetto" name didn't help make her more relatable.
She should have taken advice from Oprah Winfrey and other veterans in the entertainment industry.
I never called myself a White American or a European American or a Hungarian American so why do people call themselves a African American all these years? I always wondered that. Too many labels in this world.
I've seen plenty of people call themselves Italian American or Irish American or Chinese American, so it's not just black people. But to answer your question the term African American came up in the late 80's / early 90's by people who didn't want but to be described as just Black. Mainly because the word black is technically a color and not really a race. No one has black skin, black people have light to dark brown skin. But black people in America descended from hundreds of years here know we are not African, our DNA has European DNA mixed in over the last few hundred years.
That’s for clarifying but it’s kinda late
There are several things I don't understand. Firstly, this trend among certain celebrities (particularly has-beens like Shannen Doherty) who are so eager to revisit the past in their podcasts (which are nothing more than sessions of narcissism), especially focusing on "incidents" that not only have been forgotten by everyone but also have no impact on today's pop culture... We really couldn't care less. And Raven Symoné proudly stood by her statement at the time, so what? Has she changed her mind? Does she feel the need to revisit it? We couldn't care less about her; she's nobody. We only know her for her brief stint on "The View," where she literally made a fool of herself and even got schooled by Ann Coulter, which says it all...
COMING OUT!! BUT SHE DOES’NT PUT LABELS ON HERSELF!!!! 🤦🏽♀️💁🏽♀️
Exactly!!!
She's right She's American
oh i would’ve pretended that controversy never happened 😭
It been ten year since raven did that interview why now she just looked for attention 😂.
I understand what you're talking about. We don't really need labels. 👍
Raven we agree with you, we're Americans!!!
I love raven yes we all r American.. I stand with u who reads more into that as negative is on that individual. thank u raven thank u ..
Everyone who 'grew up' emotionally, influenced and/or ignorant are all ten years older now, after having strong feelings on all such matters. Communicating personal thoughts is always *iffY* as the 'crowd listening' don't know you - siblings who don't "bond" have these issues - even if there's only two or three of them! ☺
Dumbest fake controversy ever
Hold on, sis-you don't like labels, but you're willing to call yourself "American"? Isn't that a label, too? 🤔
What? You're being a twit.
You need to pay attention to what she said in the video dude!
Raven made her money and fame before coming out, shes in her own bubble. I mean... Look at her wife... 🙄
To me, African-American is specific to post-reconstruction/20th century African immigrants. I've always distinguished myself as a black American because I've been fortunate enough to trace my ancestry pretty far back and know that it's pretty mixed- like many black Americans are and like Raven is. I never thought anything of her comment, personally, but like she said- we love to compartmentalize and label as humans. We should try to be intentional and clear with said labels, IMO.
COMES TO COMMENT… realizes the culture….
Leaves without commenting ….
Raven live your best life girl
At the end of the day we have been lied to about our history so she is not really wrong
HUH?? I still don't understand. What did she clarify? Maybe it was ET editing and constant interruption but this video did not clarify anything. She basically talked in circles and said a whole lot of nothing.
Wow, she can't even apologize without blaming other people for what she said.
Just stop, just live your life and fade into obscurity.
😂😂😂😂
Why would she apologize and apologize for what
She thought that if she just restates her position, it wouldn't cause an issue. But what she did was split hairs!
😵💫
@@classyboy04 She should never apologize for saying something she believes in so strongly. In that regard, she should never have even considered apologizing. But she must face the backlash. The problem is, here it is now 10 years later, and she's gone to explaining the unexplainable. In short, she split hairs trying to throw bleach on stain that will not wash clean.
@@classyboy04 Exactly, she should just simply leave it alone. All she is doing is making herself a target for ridicule.
She’s telling the freaking truth ‼️‼️
African American is not a label for any individual who migrates to America while black or any of his or her descendants who migrate to America legally or otherwise, while black. However, an African American knows exactly who he is when he hears Raven and Tiger Woods clearly say they are not black. I know it came out as I'm not African American in Ravens Case. Tiger said he wasn't black. Regardless of your diatribe about the term, both Raven and Tiger are really saying they have a problem checking the box that says black or African American.
Whoopi Goldberg said the same thing in her book, "Book", from 1997 (in the chapter, "Race") - so what's her reason?
“In this country American means white. Everybody else has to hyphenate.” - Toni Morrison. Do you agree?
@mrcadm5186 Whoopi Goldberg does not have a major hang-up about her own identity. For that matter, neither does Tim Scott. Tim Scott and Whoopi Goldberg are political opposites totally.
Niether one of them would kick Oprah's question back to her concerning them being the first African American who (did whatever or accomplished whatever). Raven and Tiger Woods would kick it back.
@mrcadm5186 Toni Morrison wouldn't say what she said in the context you are dishonestly presenting here. 😉
I'm certain Toni was as proud of her own identity as Whoopi and Tim Scott. I don't see the same in Raven and Tiger. In short, Whoopi, Toni, and Tim have no problem with being black. But all these names I just mentioned are vastly different people. All of them.
@@EinsteinKnowedIt Okay then. Morgan Freeman said: "I am not African." "I don't want a Black history month. Black history is American history." "The only time I ever played a black character in a movie, was in Driving Miss Daisy." He also calls the "title", African American, an insult.
nb: don't know much about Tim Scott 😐
All the best...
There will always be ‘racism’ in America because they specifically choose to distinguish themselves as ‘*** American’. I.e. ‘Irish American’, ‘African American’, ‘Italian American’, ‘Mexican American’.
We don’t care this was so many years ago. The celebrities always want to stay relevant after no one cares from years ago like pipe down
Well Oprah's reaction to her statement didn’t help 🤨🙄
Im mean....we dont call caucasian american ....there just called caucasian which is odd since theu not from here as well and we called NATIVE ppl Native Americans instead of just americans/Native
Raven was right !!!
How are the black Africans called???
Katt will take down O.
Be patient.
I’m just disappointed that she didn’t understand being an American is a nationality even when you break down the word nationality you get the first word nation the nation is America. Your parents come from African descent 😂😂😂😂😂 ethic group then nationality please stop being duds
Oprah played her. Is this a bad time to say I can never watch The Color Purple the same way again?
I have no sympathy for Raven-Symoné. Instead of getting mad at people for criticizing her she should do some introspection about why she has a problem with being labeled African.
You are a beautiful woman ❤
All humans come from the same distant ancestor. Race is a moot point.
OPRAH IS A TYPICAL VICTIM, AS FAR A RAVEN, I APPRECIATE HER TRUTHFULNESS~
That’s so raven one of my favorite Disney channels shows growing up
