Did you listen to why Ilia was "willing" to go 5 rounds against Josh and not going aggressively for a KO punch as what he did to Alex? Josh has that kind of one-punch and you're gone, too. So, Ilia said, as a result, he was holding back.
But against Volks --- and this was said BEFORE he fought him --- that he would march Alex down regardless waht the former great champ was doing... because while extremely strong, too, Volks doesn't do those out-and-out one-punch and you're gone punches... It is not Volks method/approach.
So, Ilia said, SOUNDLY, that he's willing to get hit a few times, or more, to land one of his big ones. Because he understood, like most (those who favored him and those who went against him), that he likely wouldn't beat Volks by doing point scoring for 5 rounds. He understood he must KO Alex, or hurt him enough to go down to sub him on the mat...

Different style, different fight. Emmett one punch KO you in an exchange, so Ilia showed more respect and didn’t take as many chances. He said it before this fight that he felt more comfortable pulling the trigger vs Volk cause he’s not a KO puncher.

I always thought stylistically short power punchers could be nightmare for Volk, since Volk developed his unique style for taller opponents but leaves that chin open for short opponents, he didn't fight someone like that until Topuria. Emmett can do that too but Emmett isn't as skilled as Topuria.

It seems like every FW champion on a long run suffers the same fate: Jose Aldo, Max Halloway and now Alexander Volkanosvki.
Holloway was literally never on a long championship run. If I'm not mistaken he was only ever even interim champ.
Dont matter how good a fighter is, if they fight long enough they will lose. The best, they tried to fight the best when they are in their prime compare to regular fighters who just wants to stay in their comfort zone.

I agree with the analysis. There’s a thing that a lot of people who know Ilia were saying. It was a miracle that Emmet could survive in the previous fight. People were saying all this time leading to the fight that not finishing Emmet meant somehow he couldnt knock out Volk. People was really underestimating Ilia’s power which is crazy as well as Emmet’s chin, and then we saw what happened. Ilia shocked everyone and silenced all the haters saying he was about to get schooled and humbled. He didnt even had to grapple, which is his specialty. He said it, he is just the evolution of mma, crazy career along the way…

Joe felt afterwards that he had put Overeem in a bad spot since his brain was still fussy and decided to stop interviewing ko'ed fighters. But he did it again after DC got headkicked by Jones. I remember Joe talking about it saying he was sorry for that.

Over for Volk unfortuantly. Had a brlliant career but it all came crashing down the past few months. Ilia fought Volk who was looking good, but Ilia was hungry for the KO, which Volk didn't seem to be looking for so far in that fight. Had it gone a bit longer maybe, and Volk engaged in grappling we could've seen the Champ do it but we'll never know. As you said, he got checkmated, and that's that😢
The real Background of topuria is Wrestling and grappling, in fact is better than his striking.
Topuria did stuff a half hearted take down attempt from Volk. But Volk didn’t seem interested in grappling.

Nobody wins forever; he’s had a great career, he’s the featherweight goat but I really hope volk hangs it up. I don’t see him beating ilia and hanging around the top 10 for a long time without being champ is how you take a lot of damage. The ufc will want to feed him to the young lions of the division and even if he beats them he’ll take more damage for no reason; his legacy is solid as it is and nothing he does from this point on is likely to make it any better. I hope he retires… but I know he won’t; he loves fighting to much. If the ufc didn’t exist volk would be fighting people for pocket change in a parking lot somewhere.
@@user-om2se8mc3x 1 he’s been champ for long enough to not need to work anymore as long as he is living intelligently. 2 most fighter who stop fighting don’t wind up fucking homeless they get work in and around the sport; they do commentary or host shows for the UFC or become trainers for the next generation of fighters. 3 this isn’t like normal jobs not even hard manual labor jobs give wear and tear like fighters get it’s a health risk continuing at this point.

Good take, Volk was outclassed. Ilia seemed to have an answer for everything. It’s such a bittersweet moment, on the other hand, things at 145 just got interesting with so many potential matchups, but on the other hand it’s so sad to see a legend like Volk go out. I love this video man. I am a spanish guy, just starting to follow MMA and UFC because of Topuria. I knew about McGregor some years ago, but I was not aware of what was really going on. I've been like for one year watching more and more fights and learning about this sport. Yesterday I was crazy happy screaming and all that with that KO. Of course Topuria is my favourite fighter.
Watching you today I see myself in 8 years or so, when probably Topuria will get knocked out by the next world champion. It's like taking a look at my future. Aging comes for everyone, and we just need to accept it.

I have no idea why people want that rematch right away if at all. When I breakdown fights, I always consider who can best who in what department. Topuria’s been rocked like 2 in his whole career and it was by a lengthy dude. Volk knew better as to not exchange with Topuria and throw one shot at a time, but it was inevitable. Whenever Topuria wanted to land, Volk was feeling it. It’s an unfortunate loss, but Topuria comes from a grappling background and while that was his best shot to win compared to striking with Topuria, he was still not in a good position to even make that claim. I really don’t like Topuria after that press conference, but man to deny his threats is absolutely insane.

Man, I am from Spain and as much as I love Volk (and I mean this with all my heart), seeing that KO was cathartic. It feels absolutely fantastic to finally have a champ representing my country after years of being one of the few weirdos who follow MMA from here instead of watching soccer.
I haven't slept all night and I'm still up from the adrenaline lmao. I too wanted to see some grappling, but I'm not complaining! I am truly sorry for Volk, he's given us some of the most entertaining fights I've ever seen, but at the same time I'm beyond happy for Ilia. The UFC is coming to my city, and I will be there!!!! Still can't believe the magnitude of the feat our boy accomplished tonight.

Ilia is the real deal. Calm, cool and collected. He found the perfect shot, cornered and checkmated Volk brilliantly. No rematch necessary. He's lost 3/4, 2 by KO. Alex's time at the top is over. It's a sad day for all of us Volk fans but this is just how things go and Volk, as good as he is, is no exception.

Saw it coming. Volk was ko’d 3 months earlier, comes back down weight, fighting a heavy handed up and comer. Ilia, undefeated and still has the delusion that he’s invincible in his head, and he’s not hype he’s got the skill. This was absolutely a recipe for disaster for Volk. People should NOT be surprised it’s a young man’s game. Greats all have an end to their run, I was the biggest Anderson fan and watched him fall from invincibility just like so many others before.

The events leading to Volk getting knocked out are the exact same as when he got knocked out by Islam. Getting backed up by someone not scared of your power, baiting him to stand and bang, then hit flush when he's near or against the fence because he had nowhere to go. We might have possibly found a way to beat Volk. The hook that knocked him out was so fast and smooth I didn't even see it until the replay. I only saw the follow up shot and was standing there like "wait why the fuck is not getting up? Did he injure something? No way that had enough power, but when that replay showed the right hook my jaw dropped. It's always the shot you don't see coming and that was 100% in Volk's blindspot, too much tunnel vision I recon.
