Every time Topuria gets tagged or into a bad position, he remains calm and recalibrates in such a way that doesn't make him even more vulnerable. Cody always got into slugging wars when he felt threatened. Composure and maturity is what Ilia has over Cody.

I predicted that round 1 Ilia was going to struggle a bit as he tries to get used to Volk and get his timing down, but by the second round he'd figure him out, back him up against the fence and knock him out just like in the Jai Herbert fight. Both fights were extremely similar and Ilia honestly reminds me a lot of Anderson Silva with the way he downloads opponents weaknesses early and then exploits them. Volk's biggest shot was this first fight between them, but the element of surprise is gone and in the rematch Ilia won't need a round to figure him out. It's mma and anything could happen but if they fight again there is a huge chance Ilia will finish him in the first round.

As a Volkanovski fan, I wanna see a rematch, but I want Volkanovski to take 9 months minimum off. If he loses again and his competitiveness won’t go away, let him fight some low ranked guys at lightweight until he’s 40. That way, he can keep his GOAT status at featherweight.
Respectfully, Aldo is still the GOAT of the FW. 9 straight tittle defenses to five isn't comparable. Using Aldo lost to Conor, Max and Volk, isnt an argument when Conor was the only one who beat him in his actual prime. People act like Prime is universal, Aldo is perfect example of a fighter peaking early. He was a world champion at 23, fighting elite opponents at the age of 21. When Aldo was World Champion, Volk had yet even been training MMA. Aldo loss to Merab was his first loss to a fighter not #1 contender or Champion in 17 years. By the looks of it, Merab could end of being a champion at BW.

I really think he can pull off a rematch. He has great fight IQ and is one of the best at adapting and figuring out a counter strategy. If he is more careful vs combinations and hooks I really think he can outpoint him.
volk is so seriously like aldo now and should go on aldo's route now honestly. Got knocked out by someone like mcgregor (or atleast copying him), cleared out his division until some young dude came up, and should fight lower level guys and build his way up like aldo did at bantamweight.

Volk needs to take a year off and then either go for the rematch or some other banger fight. Regardless, his brain needs to heal properly and he should focus on providing for his family and their future.
I agree, but for different reasons than you. I think that Volk shouldn´t rematch Ilia Topuria. In fact, I think he shouldn´t fight at featherweight at all for the rest of his career. Give Volk a few months to recover his chin, 6-8 months, and while he does that bulk up to become a good sized lightweight and either fight the winner of St. Dennis VS Poirier or, in the worst case scenario, Justin Gaethje. If he loses, then yeah, retire imediatly; He will never achieve double champ status if that´s the case. But if he wins that, then have him fight for the title for a final shot to become double champ and close a legendary career, retiring on top.
Having him fight guys like Aljo or Mitchell does NOTHING for his legacy. In that case just retire. And staying on featherweight, where he already dominated everyone but will never beat the champ, it´s pointless as well. He might be the greatest of all time. Let him have a final stride to greatness, and if he fails in that just retire.
Best case scenario, Volk has two good years on the sport. He should use his career really wisely and just fight 2 or 3 times, all of them being significant to a higher goal.
You keep mentioning the KO loss 4 months ago, that had nothing to do with Saturday. Ilia is known for his power, that right hook would have knocked the entire division out with the exception maybe of Max and Ortega, those probably would only get dropped, but they would still be susceptible to the TKO.

Stop talking about Aldo's age when he lost, he started professional MMA in 2004 and lost to Connor in 2015, he was 11 years and 26 fights into his MMA career when that fight happened. Volk was 11 years and 30 fights into his career when he fought Topuria. They'd had the same length career when they lost. When a fighter starts their career is more important than their age.
Also you say Aldo fought bums. Volk's best wins are Mendes, Aldo and Korean Zombie all years past their peaks. Ortega and Yair, both mediocre fighters with massive holes in their games who would struggle to make top 10 in either the 135 or 155 divisions.
His only great wins are against Holloway who stylistic might just be a very good match-up for him.
If you think Volk is the GOAT that's fine but be honest about the facts and give Aldo the respect he deserves. There's no fighter who has beat as make top level fighters in the sport than Aldo even when he was past his best.

the thing about volk is that his mentality is so different than anyone elses, which is a blessing and a curse. he is very strong willed and i don't see anyone able to convince him that a rematch against ilia would be a bad idea for him. volk and tony ferguson have similar mindsets when it comes to fighting, and seeing volk go down the road tony ferguson went down would be absolutely heartbreaking. people close to volk have to sit him down and have a heartfelt conversation with him to really let him know the dangers of fighting these absolute killers when you're 1-3 in your last 4.

I totally agree. Volk needs to fight someone with no power like Aljo or Bryce then work his way back to the belt or go up to lightweight for some fun fights. I would also be interested in seeing him fight Henry at 145 just because that was hinted at years ago and he would destroy Henry back then but now it looks more competitive. What he shouldn't do is take the rematch or face guys like Kattar, Emmet or Justin right away. I think Volk got too comfortable with his jab because he was popping ilia’s head back and messing his face up with the jab. Ilia had a beautiful read feinting the right over hand(knowing Volk will lean back) then throwing a gazelle hook, catching Volk off guard and finishing the job with the right.

Hot take but Volk has a solid chance at a rematch. His mistake was focusing only on slipping in and out of range. That worked well but he tried to fight in the pocket against the cage which was a huge mistake. If he focuses on the clinch (which he did well in that fight) and shoots when he gets pushed against the cage he can win. He’s gotta channel his inner Dagestani
