    I'm glad you explain that fanservice doesn't equate sex. Fanservice is just whatever makes a fan excited, be it references, attraction, etc. The ending of Rogue One is fanservice.

    • @itsblitz4437
      @itsblitz4437 2 года назад +9

      Yeah even I have been learning just recently before that fanservice doesn't always mean sex, but it can mean anything of famous references ranging anything from sports to famous actors or iconic scenes from tv show or movie. Its can be very vague in the regard.

    As an artist after having tried out making some erotic/sexual art my outlook on sexual art and fanservice has changed quite a bit, once I thought it was cheap and lazy for easy money with little effort, I no longer think that, I vastly underestimated how much effort I'd have to put in as I've learned a lot about anatomy and the importance of staging, posing and composition with the purpose of invoking something in a viewer (still have a lot to learn).
    Still have some misgiving about fanservice however, the examples of seven deadly sins and Fire Force you gave are good examples as they just feel disruptive and out of place, relegating it to the fanservice episode, whether beach or hot springs is much better for pacing, especially with Fire Force the scenes feel like they were phoned in last minute.

    Good video! I feel the difference between 'good' and 'bad' fanservice is all about framing. Stuff devoted to being fanservicey (interspecies reviewers GOAT) can be really, really fun and enjoyable, but I feel a lot of the time it's lazily tacked on. There's no buildup, no intimacy, just hey here's a creepy shot of the protag getting a peek of the heroine changing! It adds nothing to the story and almost always just skeeves the hell out of any women watching. You gotta add INTIMACY! You gotta have BUILDUP!!!! Otherwise it's just a ten second scene that makes me strongly consider dropping the show, 'cause I've learned that a lot of the shows that do that suck at writing women as well, haha.

    Something I forgot to mention in my previous comment - looking at all these examples, it's really interesting how fine the line is when it comes to fan-service and what's fine for me personally and what's super distracting to a detriment.
    Like the Urusei Yatsura example made me think of how Inuyasha did have a few scenes with nudity (some more "fanservice-y" than others), but was super adamant about not ever having stuff like panty shots or a super leery camera.
    Maybe its because it was one of my first anime growing up, but I think that was a formative show for me figuring out 1)I'm probably always going to find random panty shots/out-of-place sexual jokes distracting as hell (i.e. Noragami S1, Fire Force) unless it's so over the top it circles back around to being funny (i.e. High School of the Dead). And 2) the existence of nudity/exposure alone doesn't always equal fan-service in my eyes (although I know others might disagree)

    Speaking of which, is there any chance you might dive into the animation for "Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru" (My Dress-Up Darling in English iirc). Regardless of what the show is and what it's about, the character animation in almost every episode is blowing my mind. I freakin love character animation and I found myself going back to some episodes just to go frame-by-frame with some of the shots. And they do clothing just as good as they do movement and body language.

  • @suntannedduck2388

    Fan service jokes, excuses or not it makes sense. The Saekano example was like the Haruhi episode in that particular order. XD I think the ways or the stories of the ones that have stayed around DXD, DAL for harems, or Food Wars or otherwise have made it clear. Some do it really well and others do it like any gag that just doesn't last. It has a place just like action or other breaks through I think when they get creative for original content is when it's good and not the cliche hot springs, beach or festival episodes though but something more interesting for the characters, the quirks of the universe.
    That or how I've noticed how quick 2010+ Hentai is compared to 2000s. Kamyla seems like any type of Girls Police Force anime but with some alright ideas for hypnosis and now we get maybe some date scenes but usually quick to the point stuff. Nothing wrong with it but noticed it.

    I guess this video is about fan service and not ecchi specifically, I was hoping it would touch more on how ecchi fanservice had changed since old anime where it seemed a lot more candid/natural and part of a scene (and sometimes showed on tv) versus modern ones where they tend to dedicate precious screen time for a close up of a pair of boobs that jiggle on their own which will only be in the blurays.

    Fanservice in anime can definitely be a double-edged sword, you either have great examples like Shimoneta (where our heroes are trying to bring lewdness back to a society that has banned the content you're talking about), Chivalry of a Failed Knight (whose fanservice is a nice cherry on top of a unique take on the shonen battle anime with a couple who become officially together by the 4th episode), Monster Musume (which has such likable characters with fun personalities and solid figures, plus the manga goes in crazy creative directions, such as meeting the MILF'S of the first 4 girls), Godannar (where it uses nearly every fanservice trope in the book with an over-the-top story that knows when to take itself seriously), and Cutie Honey (need I say more?)

  • @WCWit
    @WCWit 2 года назад +8

    The consent aspect you talk about here is exactly why I fell off of Fire Force
    Where the most overt fanservice was built around the character that hated every second of every scene that was meant to be "appealing" (or funny slapstick?) and it just put me off the show as a whole, even though I enjoyed what was done with the action in that first season
    Edit: Posted this comment like a second before you brought up Fire Force yourself

    • @TheCanipaEffect
      @TheCanipaEffect  2 года назад +1

      It just felt reluctant, and there was an interview with Fire Force's editor where he basically said that he told Ohkubo to add more fanservice to his new work. So it kind of just ended up being trashy tropes from other popular manga thrown in without much context.

    • @PIKMINROCK1
      @PIKMINROCK1 2 года назад +1

      It doesn't really work in Fire Force. It comes across like Zenitsu's pleading with women. It's overdone and out of tone with the rest of the show and the joke itself isn't particular funny. It's horny but, unless you're 14, you probably aren't remotely getting off on it. If you compare to a show like To Love Ru, where it does do those kind of jokes but, it doesn't take itself seriously and it tries to push the joke to absurdity. The character variety also plays better since if you aren't into one character, the next episode will probably focus on another.

    • @Katt1721
      @Katt1721 2 года назад +1

      I've gotta say, I don't know anyone who actually likes the fan-service in Fire Force. Seems like people either hate it outright and its kept them away from the show or they merely tolerate it for the sake of enjoying the rest the show has to offer which is uh... definitely not the reaction you want with fan-service lmao

    • @ilay_ux
      @ilay_ux 2 года назад +1

      @@Katt1721 I dislike the fanservice in season 1, and I remember following the weekly discourse in 2019 with people dropping it, lots of people moved over to Dr Stone lol. I found the fanservice so out of place and it added nothing honestly. titty for the sake of titty is my most disliked trope ever. if there's no joke and it's just shoved in your face + fails at being funny, my enjoyment just tanks.
      BUT i do think the fanservice was funny in season 2 though. I actually do know people that don't have problems with the fanservice, I'm also one of those people now. I even found myself giggling at the way they'd sometimes cut the scene quickly after Tamaki's bra drops lmfaooo. heck, there's literally a whole comedic segment with a villian that relies on his training to beat Tamaki's fanservice. that's fucking funny honestly 💀 the big difference with S1 and S2 imo is that with the latter it actually feels like fanservice is treated in a comedic sense. appealing to some with obvious nods to the female/male characters and their sex appeal, but has a secondary focus that leans towards making an actual joke. Season 2 ep 1 is a great example too with the whole male modeling magazine stuff. Something that's timed well to make you laugh. I'm not sure if the change in director caused the difference in vibe for S2, but people generally exaggerate with how the fanservice in the show is "too much" it hardly takes away anything from the show's strong points. (except female characters ofc)
      this video is pretty nice because it opens discussion to what's good fanservice and tasteless fanservice. The FF anime managed to pick up the tasteless stuff that plagued characters before and actually make an effort in entertaining you at least. I mean Tamaki's backstory in season 2 is literally SO dumb to the point where it's funny and it kind of made her an endearing character to follow. there's still lots of stuff that bored my first watch tbh but all the heat around fanservice is a little overblown in my opinion.

Where he's simultaneously a master of depicting three-dimensional space in animation, and a huge pervert who makes characters' thighs so big they have to be consistently corrected. Okay so... What is the difference between objective boring and subjective boring? I'm saying this because I find some popular shows, mostly slower paced one's and space operas, to be boring.

    • @SadFace201
      @SadFace201 2 года назад

      The difference between objective and subjective is a matter of artistic execution. To give an example, let's take a genre of art called Cubism (copied from wikipedia): "The Cubist style emphasized the flat, two-dimensional surface of the picture plane, rejecting the traditional techniques of perspective, foreshortening, modeling, and chiaroscuro and refuting time-honoured theories that art should imitate nature". You can say that you do not like the Cubism style (subjective bad), but that doesn't mean that that particular piece of art is bad if it does interesting things with perspective, foreshortening, modeling, etc. etc. that is novel to the field (objectively good).
      In terms of anime, the criteria for good and bad are different (and may differ slightly from person to person). In terms of judging fanservice scenes objectively, I consider how the fanservice impacts the pacing of the story, how the human body is portrayed (e.g. do they use interesting poses or camera angles to show the body in unique ways; do they put a lot of effort into animating realistic muscles or curvatures of the body rather than just flashing tits and ass), the relevance of the fanservice (e.g. is it integral to a complex joke or story?), among other aspects.
      I am a degenerate that likes One Room because the girls have a teasing and inviting feel to them, a specialty of Kantoku who is a specific artist I follow. Kantokus' artstyle is also very vibrant and uses a lot of plaid colors. There are other artists that offer similar styles, but Kantoku is up there for me in terms of the quality.
      I like the fanservice in Kill La Kill because Studio Trigger is the only studio that would use clothing as a symbolism for enslavement in their story.
      I do not like the loli-fetishism in Made in Abyss because they spent so much effort into setting up this beautifully cruel world before jarringly throwing in naked lolis, lolis in bondage, loli urination, etc. etc. that was completely irrelevant and destroyed any immersion I had with the world.
      P.S. Judging ANYTHING based on the percentage of people saying it's "good" or "bad" is not a proper method because a majority of people put little thought into understanding why something is good/bad. If a person cannot explain their reasoning for liking or disliking something, then their opinion is useless.

    • @captainmega6310
      @captainmega6310 2 года назад

      @@SadFace201 man, even In trying to be objective there's some subjectivity...
      Also, I wasn't saying subjective bad and objective bad. I already know the shows I like are shit. I'm specifically saying what's considered objectively boring, because I'm curious about that

    • @SadFace201
      @SadFace201 2 года назад

      @@captainmega6310 Well, the point I was trying to make is that even though you may subjectively dislike a show, you can still objectively enjoy parts of it. I just dislike when people write things off as "bad" based on one aspect they dislike about it, which makes judging shows too black and white. And this is why explanation of an opinion is more important than just saying "good" or "bad".
      If you want my opinion on boring, I think something is poorly paced if I can step away for 5-10 minutes from a 25 min episode and still understand what's going on. I remember randomly clicking on a random 300+ episode in Naruto just to see if the pacing changed---A majority of the episode was people standing in a room with very basic banter, no change in scenery, and no plot. The scene was a crude attempt at making characters look cool. To me, this is objectively boring.
      To contrast this, let's look at Monogatari. Monogatari is defined by its clever play-on-words and long dialogues. How does Studio Shaft make long dialogues interesting? They use very colorful and high-contrast backgrounds, use a lot of fast and interesting scene cuts, and pose their characters in ridiculous ways to keep the audience engaged. To me, this is objectively not boring even though the scene is the same as what I described earlier: Characters talking in a room.

    The problem with fanservice though is that, it feels like there's way way waaaaaay more male gaze than, well, female gaze. Heck, males only really get...muscles, but women get everything else. Where are the voluptorous guys with big butts, and thick thighs? I totally agree. Especially when it comes to shows with good production values, fanservice with male characters is super super lacking. It's kind of why I referred to Free! as an awakening, because it really didn't seem like a show like that could have such a good production. As it stands, I'm kind of just jumping on whatever Hiroko Utsumi or Sayo Yamamoto do next. There's a reason that Tumblr is full of tiny 2 second clips from sports anime. I don't care much for fan service and find it annoying when directors and animators use it thoughtlessly, tastelessly, or extensively. At the same time, I'm not particularly against it, and I think overcensorship for lewd series is ridiculous when said series is (or should clearly be marketed to) an older/mature audience.
    Still, more than anything, Japan's high cultural tolerance for portrayals of children (including teenagers) in sexualised and promiscuous depictions - and the people okay and happy with consuming such media - are without ethics, and for those on the adult side or mature side of life, outright wrong and disgusting. Paedophiles, often in denial and attempting to justify corrupt values by conflating artistic and social expressionism with twisted, degenerate-motivated content very meticulously aimed at a specific viewership.
    On the other hand, fan service isn't going anywhere and shouldn't be censored on outlets not intended for child and immature audiences, anyway. The problem is, companies no longer get to decide who can and cannot participate in watching a certain series, with the advent of streaming and network television. Broadcast and cable television offered greater protections in these areas, but everything is available on the internet now. Television (and anime consumption) landscape has changed.
    In the end, it's all about balance and responsibility. The onus is on the parents/guardians to actively engage and, if necessary, screen their child's content, whether it's gore and violence, nudity and promiscuity, profanity, sociopolitical indoctrination, etc. At least until the child is 18/19 or clearly mature enough to wisely filter out and gauge destructive or objectionable media/entertainment. Even at that age, an adolescent's brain is still so highly undeveloped and our outlook of life is still being formed throughout the 20s.

      If Funimation was really going to censor all anime, would they have licensed High School DxD? Valkyrie Drive? Hell, they were part of the production committee in Fire Force.
      The issue with Interspecies Reviewers was that by the time Funi was getting ready to decide what anime to license for that season, many series hadn’t even started production yet. For IR, all they had to rely on was the source material - which only described sex as part of the reviews, and didn’t actually show it. They expected a mildly ecchi habanero, not a “literally show a hermaphrodite angel being plowed by a hyena girl onscreen” Carolina Reaper.
