  • Welcome to Episode 3 of Mind the Game with LeBron James and JJ Redick. In this episode, JJ and LeBron talk about adapting and evolving with the game of basketball. Each of them discuss lessons they learned in high school that helped shape the rest of their careers. Next the guys talk about college basketball and whether LeBron ever wishes he could've played in the NCAA tournament / March Madness. Then the guys move on to talk about LeBron's first NBA basket and the way the game has changed from way back then to today. JJ goes on to discuss the impact of the 2009 Orlando Magic and why Stan Van Gundy's offense was revolutionary at the time. The rest of the conversation centers around LeBron's time with Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and the Miami Heat. They talk through how the team recovered from the 2011 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks and Coach Erik Spoelstra's innovation that led to NBA championships and how Chris Bosh had to sacrifice for the good of the team. Then we take a beat to appreciate how Chris Bosh influenced many of today's big men like Bam Adebayo, Nikola Jokic and Chet Holmgren. This is such a fun episode so let's get to it.

      I admit now I've had the wrong impression of Lebron for years. Seems everything he does on the court is to win, with the clock running or after the whistle it's not straight-up unadulterated ego, it all serves a purpose. I didn't realize how many head-games are going on all at once for 4 quarters. I mean, mf'ers go off and do wild shit occasionally but the amount of games decided by a couple plays one way or the other makes all the little pieces essential, even sometimes pulling comedy faces arguing with refs on some straight forward call. honestly, I'd have used the letter "D" instead of O's so the kids can really avoid being confused and used O for offense. so D and O's instead of X and O's. and I'd be writing D1, D2, D3, etc to denote which defender, and O1, O2, O3 etc. to denote which offensive player.

    • @jaywinger79
      @jaywinger79 Месяц назад

      I think that that would be even more confusing because capital Ds often can look close to being Os, especially if they are drawn rapidly. So I think you need to have two contrasting letter forms that aren't remotely close to each other. Just my opinion. @@HVBRSoF

It makes perfect sense why the international players are able to adapt to the NBA so much faster as they have these foundational principles that have been taught to them at a young age. I suppose it starts with things like this, so I appreciate the work you are putting in to share your knowledge with us. The more we can change the narrative around the game with content like this, I'd hope that gets everything else moving in the right direction.

D'Antoni's Suns utilized Amare around the nail but he was never a 3pt shooter so they had space & pace but not w/ the corner 3's like Spo had Bosh sniping from the weak side.

The sacrifices and IQ of spacing bigs, or super role players who compliment the team perfectly, are so often overlooked during this era where everyone thrives for the “bag” in 1v1 basketball. Just like Luka emphasized in JJ’podcast that better players are actually better at games of 5v5, not the “bag”. Credit to Bron and JJ for making this podcast so genuine and wholesome. I'm 52 years old I have been into basketball since I was a kid I have played 2K throughout the years but didn't implement the plays I found it difficult because of not understanding how they work I recently got 2K 24 and this video has made it easier for me to understand how certain plays work I used to let plays run automatically

      In about a year young hoopers who are just getting into this game will find this channel and binge watch a lot of the stuff because there'll be a big catalogue to learn from by then and I think that's the most exciting thing about this podcast.

    This show is different. Obviously they don’t do hot takes, but even from the NBA players that currently run podcasts and talk about the game, this is the only one that talks about what is actually going on, why it’s happening, and how things create the result.

      PBS basketball is the best way to put it. Cable documentaries usually have this drama and cliffhanger angle with bells n whistles; PBS documentaries don't do much if any reenactments, drama, but rather state it matter of factl, evenly, and calmly with simple production.
      Just seeing two guys talk with occasional clips is basically that!

    Quick thoughts:
    1.) Have a time stamp for your intro as some people may think they know everything and want to skip
    2.) Some people know literally nothing and are watching these to learn more than a spectator would know, so you may want to take a second or two to just add in that the "block" is literally a block on the bottom sides of the paint and its also called the "dunkers spot" because dunkers will sit there on plays they arent involved in to catch lobs from players driving to the bucket and reacting to collapsing defense. Think Aaron gordan if he isnt sitting in the corner. He often cuts to the dunkers spot baseline if he isnt already sitting there.
    Food for thought. I know you and Bron have literally been immersed in this world since you could hold a basketball, but some people didn't know they liked basketball until they watched LeBron destroy the Celtics in their best friends house while they all got angry and turned the TV off. People dont know what they dont know and most dont think to ask or look something up that you say they just move onto your next sentence. 10/10 pod.

    This season is the right time to talk about the evolution of the Big. Because Bigs were the past, but the Big is making a huge comeback (Jokic, Embiid, Giannis) and this season we have 2 great examples of the new Big with Chet & Wemby.
