How Three-Point Shooting Changed Everything | LeBron James & JJ Redick
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 19 ноя 2024
- Welcome to Episode 6 of Mind the Game with LeBron James and JJ Redick. This episode was recorded a few weeks and it's our favorite one yet. Here we discuss the evolution of shooting in the NBA and how it's completely changed the way basketball is played. First we discuss how purpose of the modern NBA offense is to put two on the ball and the best players at doing that (Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, James Harden). Then the guys dig into early shot clock three-pointers and self created three-pointers like step-back threes and how those have also expanded the modern NBA offense. Which leads us into how difficult it is for defenses today to stop these offenses covering so much space. And finally, JJ and LeBron tough on the catch-and-shoot three-pointers and play a thought experiment where LeBron has to draw up his favorite ATOs for JJ - plays like "Victory", "Oklahoma", and "Clippers Down."
Again this is one of the nerdiest episodes of Mind the Game we'll ever do and we can't wait for you all to see it!

JJ doing the longest and most elaborate coaching interview process in NBA history.
😂😂😂😂 facts.
He decided he doesn't wanna interview anymore, but knows a 6 part series talking game plans etc with LeBron will peak GMs interest....
Hahahaha for real though
Can u blame him? He's far from a dummy
lol right!!! After watching this episode no one can tell me JJ isn’t going to be the Lakers next head coach!!!
NEW DRINKING GAME- take a shot everytime bron says ‘yep’ 😭😭
Or for sure😂
Bruh, I gotta imagine that annoys JJ at some point. I love Bron but it kinda drives me nuts when he keeps saying that😂😂😂😂
@@JMFYT92😂😂😂😂
Ur going to need a new liver😂😂😂😂😂
Lmaoooo chilllll on bron😂😂😂
One thing I can think to improve even more is that after JJ explains a play at the start to play a clip of an NBA game example, I feel like that would make it much easier to understand and remember
EDIT: I know they already doing that when he's talking with LeBron. I meant at the start when he's explaining the terms, it would be easier to memorize and visualize seeing an actual example right after instead of being shown much later on in the video
Im with you in this one
💯
Facts
Yo JJ..... THIS!!!
Great call.
The density of basketball knowledge from these two together is insane
Love it! In the beginning when JJ explains plays and terminology, it would be great if you showed videos of teams running it
It early days yet. It will surely be added trust me
@@samuelaubyn6919 you’re probably right. It’s still learning stage
They show it later when he's drawing it in the discussion.
that's what i'm thinking. how do they not have an nba 2k sponsorship. they could use the video game to run the exact play he is discussing to show it in action. 2k could script the ai to do it exactly how they need it.
I was coming to suggest the same thing.
i'm lowkey convinced that JJ could bring up any play in LeBron's career and he'd be able to comment on it with precision
Still not using X’s and O’s right
He usually discuss most plays before the podcast
Bron has photographic memory
You think they dont go over the plays before they film.... Bron does have a great memory but come on.
@@peterhorton9063why would they…. They barely have time to get this podcast out you think they have time to go over every thing? Y’all some top tier haters man just listen to the podcast and shut up lmfao
this pod got me running plays in 2k my career
Facts I never use to use the coaches playbook when you unlock the feature but now in our life I'm playing Madden 😅😅😂
Gonna try some plays out tonight in myteam. I usually just do the warriors freelance
26:52 This clip of Steph doing the play as they are talking about it, and then LeBron literally describing exactly how Steph does it, was perfect
you already know that man has studied so much warriors film 😂😂
Steph in a 2 man action is one of the hardest things to defend. Bron has watched and experienced too much of it to know every outcome off it 😂😂😂
@@E_T_H He's like Dr Strange running the simulations and only one outcome leads to a stop. lol
@@hiteshrana434 great comparison hahaha that’s actually perfect 😂
He’s traumatized lol
Can I just say THANK YOU to whoever is splicing the clips into the convo. This is fantastic.
I love how nerdy lebron and jj are over basketball. Just feels so genuine.

Only 6 episodes in and i already feel like im watching basketball games differently. This pod is so valuable for a fan of the game who’s never played on an organized team.
normally when watching basketball, I only watch the player holding the ball, but after several episodes of this podcast, I started watching the other 9 players, and what they'll do. And you can actually see the plays they are talking about in this podcast. I love it!
Love the praise from LeBron for Lauri. Such a good player

When Kumunguh slips and gives it off to klay and Steph down screens looney and gets kumunguh on the lob pass distribution. You guys call it kumunguh? Hmm we call it kaminga but I totally get why you call it kumunguh

JJ drawing up "Pistol" and "Oklahoma" (which we called 'Chicago') brings up so many great high school hoops memories. I'm sure there are many out there who watch ball and look out for certain plays and actions like this. Always so fun to see the execution on a high level. Love these fellas breaking it down like this

Yup we called it Chicago here in NY....good times 💯
bron, "I feel like... I'm pretty much unguardable"
JJ, "I wish I knew what that feeling was like"

I love how JJ opens up the episodes explaining and teaching the terminology and plays they talk about. I grew up playing ball but just recently started to try to understand the game at a deeper level. This podcast helps a ton. Love it 🤘💜🏀

Always a great day when there is new episode of the mind the game podcast great work gents
I’ll say it again, this is the greatest thing on the internet.
The break had me nervous with the JJ head coach rumors
The only podcast I get excited for.
Been watching some of the playoffs and have been recognizing plays from your podcast. Thanks for taking time to explain the plays!
JJ knowledge and love for the game is so good. What the show really displays is Lebron mentality for the game. When he predicts the play before JJ finishes drawing it its so great. It was also great to here him mention that young players now don't watch the games.
Love learning the terminology of all these sets of plays. Beautiful Podcast to grow & teach the game of basketball
Yall really teaching the game to everyone! Much love

Hey JJ I appreciate you talking at the beginning on the board but can you show us some videos or images of the actions or the patterns pls?? Thanks and I love the podcast ❤
I’d love video examples during the beginning sections, too!!!
JJ , I have always watched basketball but with the feeling my basketball knowledge has been lackluster , this is so great and valuable , and plus you and LeBron , couldn't have had a better idea .
Jj is so in his element with this podcast and I love it, and to have bron as his co host is so awesome, two big basketball brains just talking basketball. I just feel like a fly on the wall taking in knowledge
Dear JJ Reddick: the best part of my week is when you take the time to explain these deep basketball concepts at the beginning of the podcast, trusting that I both understand the words coming out of you mouth, and that I will retain that understanding enough to follow the conversation a few minutes later with Bron. (Spoiler alert: I cannot.) Your sweet but misguided faith in my basketball intellect makes me so happy. I love watching you and Bron geek out from the sidelines.
😂 sometimes we’re all geekin
This show proves one thing. These boys absolutely LOVE ball. Keep this shit up, boys. Nice work
This podcast is so informative 👏 👌
The 2016 Cleveland Cavs beat a best record Warriors with a full squad. No injuries that playoffs. In a 3-1 deficit. One of the most incredible Finals. I don't think most people understand how incredibly challenging that was to do. Till this day, people still downplay that historic Finals comeback.
They will start to appreciate it more once lebron retires fr
No injuries but suspensions and ejections yea
Yeah after a bs suspension and ejection. Followed by 2 more finals losses. Then a couple sweeps and first round exits. Y’all can have that little 3-1 run. Which actually isn’t that big of an accomplishment. So many teams have been up 2-0 then lose 4 games in a row compared to 3 in a row with 3-1
It was a huge comeback, but GSW with their full 5 was basically an unstoppable team. Partly because their team work and cohesion was on another level.
@@tavionhawkns5227loser lebron the goat. Dray played game 6,7. Than steph called kd after having the biggest choke ever..
It really doesn’t get any better than this. I could listen to these two go back and forth all day.
Anyone else love the solo JJ play explanations at the start.🔥honestly relaxing
These guys are nerding out so hard. I love it
This is cause and effect basketball. Too many players in the league think athletic ability trumps everything so they refuse to think the game thru. I was a victim of this early on in my football days. You’ll see DBs getting burned because they take the bait not realizing they are being played the whole time. The moment you bring your brain to the game everything changes.
The wine is good for the show ... This is a great back and forth, natural ... I can't really watch other guys podcast after seeing this show guys ... frik

I wanna see a live stream of Bron and JJ watching a playoff/finals game together
I was listening to the pod while JJ draws out plays and for a moment there i felt like I was back in school🤣, kinda made me sleepy🥱
The intellectual aspects of playing the game is truly underrated but you’re not winning a championship without it. Love the episode.
At the highest level it’s more about the mental than physical. All the players are talented and skilled. The mental is what sets you apart because the athleticism is about the same. It doesn’t work being the best athlete.
Watching THIS episode was awesome! As someone that revolves his game around catch and shoot 3s and off ball movement, it is everything I could want 🔥🔥 thank you JJ and Bron 👏🏽🔥👌🏽
This just made my day better 🥲
This is incredible!! Best thing I've ever seen on RUclips!! I could watch all day everyday. Love how you two are sharing the same brain.
I’m not a big fan of LeBron’s game but what a humble person he is given everything he has. Respect!
This is the best episode so far!
Not sure if you'd consider a Q&A section but here's two:
1. What percentage of NBA possessions involve a formal 'play'?
2. How are play calls shared without telling the the other team? Particularly in the playoffs where they likely have studied your sets
there are stats that track how much of the time a team runs set plays in a game, its usually 40ish% in the half court from what i see
@@crystalizedExposed where do you see it?
this podcast is sick, but if there were like animations for the play breakdowns that would bring this podcast to a whole other level

All that shows me is that he's in great shape. Veins on his legs. Low body fat. He could play 2-3 more years until he has to rethink the future question again.
@@allisknu11 I don’t think he ever has to contemplate if he could play at this level or close to it l until he’s 50. I think he retires before he has a steep decline.

I watch these videos every night before I go to bed. I haven’t lost a pickup game since
"Because they don't watch basketball!" 😂
Hey JJ, was wondering if in the intro's you could sometimes show vids of the plays you're describing. Been watching NBA for a few years but sometimes get confused with the terminology used. Would appreciate anything you could do to help
Loveeee the hammer play. There's been many occasions where the low man on the side where the shooter will eventually receive the ball, they don't call out that back screen so that shooter's defender is blindsided by that. I remember being at a Raptors Coaches clinic where the Raptors ran exclusively this hammer action for like 5 mins straight.
I really appreciate this pod and the insight. It really opens things up in terms of how we see the game and that's regardless of what level anyone plays at.
Amazing stuff.
I think Half Court Hoops had a video for the Raptors hammer action a few years ago!
Is Finland a play Denver uses often?👀 love this podcast!! I learn so much
45:29 WHAT JJ WHAT IS HE SAYING?!?!?😂😂

That Dunleavy assist is sweet. And it makes it better watching the Cavs bench watch it develop.
God dang Bron is smart as hell!!
We’ve always known since high school he was a team first type of player always working for the best shot and getting teammates involved. But his intellect is on a whole different level and how he’s able to process other teams off the way he does! Did y’all see how easily he went through what Golden State runs, like it was no big deal? Even though it’s toward the end of his career, he continues to amaze me more and more. And this is coming from an “MJ is The GOAT” NBA fan here! His Intellect and bball acumen/IQ, is out of this world. Impressive! As much as MJ was my idol growing up as a little kid and will always be my number one, I have to even admit he definitely was smarter than Michael, which is really saying something because Michael was smart as hell as well. Just not on LeBron‘s level Though.
This is definitely my favorite podcast!
Greatest basketball podcast out to date!
glad to see lebron shouting out Mike D'Antoni, he really was thinking ahead with his offense.
The thing about those strategies, they only worked if u had one guy who could keep up with scoring but mainly could lockdown all 5 positions like Shawn Marion did. Teams now play this up tempo and offense with either no one on the floor with defensive game or the ones that do play defense are lackluster on offense
Loving the content! You should do an episode on defending against these offensive sets. How do defenses react and adjust once they see plays they recognize? That'll be interesting!
