Yeah, I watched the video and thought, "That's preposterous." Then I tried it for a squats a couple of hours later and it worked. Been lifting for 33 years, and I'm still figuring out how to squat. That's one reason I love the iron.
Embracing (pun intended) your “whitebelt” mentality has been really formative for me this last year. This vid was a reminder I should say thanks, so...thanks 😃
I’ve used the nose and then mouth technique since I learned it in a diving class almost 20 years ago. The idea was to take 5-6 breaths as deep as possible to fill the lungs to their fullest potential before going under water without equipment. I expanded this to long distance shooting in the military so that when I exhaled half a breath before firing I could hold my breath as long as possible with ”half a lung”. I actually learned to implement breathing and bracing from your channel Brian a few years ago and you told me to get as big a breath as possible so I used the way I knew how :D
Been watching for a few years but never commented. Just wanted to say thanks for the content you put out. Literal goldmine of information for anyone in any lifting discipline and hearing about your own hardships (and your attitude towards them) have really helped me put my own in perspective. Honestly an inspiration and an excellent role model for the younger generation. Much love from the UK
Hey Brian. I’m a beginner lifter and I watched your breathing and bracing video about 4 weeks ago. It’s helped instantly that same day and I found out I was stronger and could start at a heavier working weight. I went from: 155 to 185 3RPM on bench 95 to 105 OHP 155 to 185 Deadlift (I hit 225 this past Saturday) 135 to 185 squat I never knew how much breathing made a difference till I tried it out. I’m excited about this video as it gives me something new to try on my back day today. Thank you so much for these videos.
In Okinawan Karate we do the same breathing. So when a saw your video about breathing long time ago, i understand a lot more of lifting and gave me always more core strength. Sorry my english. A big Hug Brian. Always an inspiration.
By far my favorite guy on RUclips. Just started getting more serious with lifting in the past year or two, and I latched onto your videos quick, fast, and in a hurry. I graduated from a little Bible school in PA earlier this year. I’m thinking it’s around three and a half hours from you. Next time I get out that way for a visit, I’ll be doing my best to get down to your gym on a Saturday. It would be great to meet you! Also, thanks for calling my tummy “little” and “tiny.” Made me feel better about myself. 3:20
Brian just wanna say thanks, I improved my ohp with your technique vid quite abit, your cues just really works for me, dont wanna put anyone under the bus but ive seen a lot of tips on lifts and nobody quite has the presentation of knowledge that you do, now im gonna implement these breathing techniques, ive been doing everything wrong lol.
This is absolutely amazing. I felt a huge difference with the breath through the nose not the mouth. Leg day tomorrow is going to be great. Thank you so much Brian you have helped me in my strongman goals so much you rock man!
Owh man this is revelation! Always had trouble bracing. Breaking it down into a two step process is brilliant. Can really feel my back braced for once instead of just my stomach. Appreciate these gems brother! Keep em coming.
Wow! I actually noticed this tip last week deadlifting but wasn't sure if I was imagining things since I hadn't heard anyone mention this before. Glad to see I'm not going crazy :)
Holy crap! I’m doing overhead press today and tried taking in from my nose and then mouth. The difference is immediate! A little woozy but if I ignore that I’m pushing strict and adding weight like it’s nothing
Hey Brian, great video as always. Just want to let you know that the Union Flag is upside down. The flagpole side should have the widest white line at the top of the flag not at the side. The flag is rotationally symmetrical but is not reflectively symmetrical. Just look how it is displayed in other commonwealth flags to help. Thanks.
What do you think of doing weighted planks with the core air in belly to belt idea your talking about? Since your supposed to not torque the belt on before the full breath
I have been trying loads of breathing and bracing techniques as I'm pretty new to lifting. Is getting light headed while bracing, especially heavy squats something that gets better over time? Do you just learn to deal with it? Or is is something you need to fix? I feel that as my strength increases it is getting better, as I can push more weight before feeling that sensation. Thanks for the great content!
Glad I opened this on 3 separate tabs at different times so I'd eventually watch this (when I'm not working), because i realised i didnt end up liking it the first time I watched it!
Something I do that carried over from marching band is taking “sips” of air. So once I get completely full of air, I take just a little bit more. Just a sip at a time. Like 5 times until I feel like if I take anymore I pop like a balloon
So Brian the technique is when I breath in before a lift take in a breath through my nose as much as possible then again through my mouth brace abs hard as possible then lift?
*Can I get some advice on front squats. I'm replacing them for back squats for a while and watched Brian's videos about it but when I squat down I do the note on spreading your knees as you come down but now the next day I'm having this odd knee pain kinda feel like it's right above my knee but after the workout and today sitting down and getting up I can feel it bothering me every time as I go about my day.....Should I still focus on spreading my knees out or still sit back on the squats as I'm going down? Then again I did other workouts that day too but front squat were my main work and everything else I've done plenty over the years with no issues*
I'm no doctor, but I had pain like that too, just above my kneecap that hurt when I moved and got worse when I squat. I thought it might be patellar tendinitis, from what I could find online. What worked for me was stretching and using a foam roller on my quads, IT band, and glutes. I did that every day I didn't lift and after a week or so I was able to squat front and back without knee pain. Maybe you have a similar problem?
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial *Dang so you're saying I got tendinitis overnight? This happened on Nov. 5th and now today as we talk but I've done back squats (no knee pain) and even front squats before but the bar would start to roll off my shoulders and as you said when that happens it's mostly from sitting back too much like a back squat. When I tried things yesterday all I was going for was "spread spread spread you knees out" in my head negating sitting back. Is there a kinda like ratio in front squat as far as spreading knees out/sitting back on the front squat?*
Great video bro! How about bracing for the Stones? Do i also need a belt to apply these bracing methods or does the atlas stone acting as a belt also counts in these methods?
endurance needs oxygen, so you will need another technique. Something like marathon runners technique, where their practice made their body efficent enough to transport oxygen to make ATP/energy.

Every youtube video need these.. im liking it
Amazing video. Ive got question. Could You tell me Sir why when Im going down when squatting my bell release, why is that?
Greetings from Poland
that breathing through nose then mouth tip is amazing
Yeah, I watched the video and thought, "That's preposterous." Then I tried it for a squats a couple of hours later and it worked. Been lifting for 33 years, and I'm still figuring out how to squat. That's one reason I love the iron.
I always inhale through my nose but never considered adding a mouth bit at the end; holy shit.
I almost passed out at my work desk like 3 times watching this video.
Embracing (pun intended) your “whitebelt” mentality has been really formative for me this last year. This vid was a reminder I should say thanks, so...thanks 😃
its something I need to be reminded of constantly!
Sounds like bullfit to me.

3rd degree Black Belt in Shotokan brother, That is where I first learned it as well!
This has helped my planks tremendously.
Wow never thought of bracing while planking
I'm letting out a lot of air from the other end. Am I doing it wrong ?
National Health Institute Better out than in. 🤷♂️
I'm sure you're joking, but I too let out a lot of air out the back end, maybe too much. Is this normal and expected?
@Balder van de Vijfeijken lol

I hope it continues to help!

my friend, you are briliant!

Will give it a shot, thanks!
Brian I've been trying your aggressive deadlift setup even on low weights and the mindset change has made everything feel so much better.
00:22 im glad to see the 3 stars and a sun at background. Thanks man. 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Great video man! This really drives home the importance of conditioning too - super hard to breathe and brace when you're out of breath!
Great video👍 Will put it in practice, love the flags hanging in the background 🇲🇽🎉
I pulled so much air I got light-headed
RIGHT?
Hey :D
Excellent excellent video! You're game changer Brian.
You are great! Breathing and bracing changed my lifting at all!!!
These tips are great! Already practicing the nose breathing first and I can definitely feel the difference!
Thank you so much for this! Best of wishes to Nala and hope she recovers quickly sir.
Thank you so much for this vid Brian! After practicing this all week it allowed me to PR a 225lb sumo deadlift after my main sets were complete!
Breathing through the nose first and then mouth I will try this for sure. I breathe into my back first and then the side and finally the front.
You have some of the most informative videos ! Thanks !
Excellent info as always, Brian!
Good stuff.
Wow! I actually noticed this tip last week deadlifting but wasn't sure if I was imagining things since I hadn't heard anyone mention this before. Glad to see I'm not going crazy :)
Excellent video.
Loved this! So helpful and I need to practice!!!! You are a cute crocodile !!!!!!
Holy crap! I’m doing overhead press today and tried taking in from my nose and then mouth. The difference is immediate! A little woozy but if I ignore that I’m pushing strict and adding weight like it’s nothing
Can you make a video on how to use lats to stabilise bar path in pressing movements?
Great video Brian, you're still helping me a lot💪

Yo this is awesome, I feel like I can take all the air in the world. Great content as always
I needed this much more than I knew
6:40 woah this really works that’s insane!!
Thanks for this. These are constantly helpful
The nose to mouth was a huge difference compared to mouth only. Thank you for that as I'm maxing out over the next few weeks.
I immediatly did a squat workout and it felt really good. Thanks Brian
gonna hit the gym and try it now
Thank you for this and all the amazing content 💪
I'll try this on my next squat/deadlift day this friday! Thanks!
Brian always dropping knowledge. I'll remember these cues for Friday. Gonna try some of these drills after work today
this is the best tip ive ever heard brian smallsruhe
Good luck with the surgeries.
Thanks Brian! Just thought about my weak core while squating.
Going to apply on deadlifts today
Water Form Number 3!!
This helped a lot thanks
This way of inhaling and bracing is also the best way to get rid of hiccups...honest to god
truth !
This is really good and thanks for sharing!
thank you!
New video on my birthday?? It's going to be a good day.
Happy Birthday my Dude!
@@BrianAlsruheOfficial thanks man, I appreciate! My wife also surprised me with a Neversate shirt today too.
Thanks for sharing!!! Highly appreciated by weight lifting newbie.
Power!
Great explanation, especially drill #1!
You are very good 😊😊
I think I actually may have done breathing in and pumping up chest when i do front squats
I think ive been focusing too much on my spinal erectors & trap retraction than my core
Ive never felt comfortable using a belt
Amazing as always brother, great cues! God bless...
Watched on the toilet. Tried the breathing cues. Best. BM. EVAR!
Another amazing video
Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge
Can’t wait to try this tonight
Squat night
What do you think of doing weighted planks with the core air in belly to belt idea your talking about? Since your supposed to not torque the belt on before the full breath
Tried this today on overhead press. Going up so easy. Right about the diaphragm adjustment. Seems after a set my abdomen is a bit tired/ fatiqued.
Lookin FRESH brian!
Thumbs up just for the intro!
Still a great video!
You should have a million billion subs
Perfect video after the gym.

Hi Brian! What do you think of reverse grip bench press? Have you tried it before?
Anyways, great video as always! Thanks
Very well explained! Makes alot of sense! I have been doing zercher squats because of previous injuries! Does this apply to front and zercher squats?
So Brian the technique is when I breath in before a lift take in a breath through my nose as much as possible then again through my mouth brace abs hard as possible then lift?
Just to let everyone know these breathing techniques also work during sex & can get very interesting if the sex is oral sex.
brian takes notes from elite fts i take notes from brian
Just on time before today’s workout.. much appreciated Brian

Try doing some research on patellar tendinitis and how to resolve it. Most likely it has nothing to do with how your knees are tracking

TOMMY BOY REFERENCE YES! Thanks for being you Brian haha
3:15 I'm using my belt from my tool belt 😂
Great video bro! How about bracing for the Stones? Do i also need a belt to apply these bracing methods or does the atlas stone acting as a belt also counts in these methods?

Great.

Mad props on that philippine flag behind you
