- An in-depth review on the TTR125. This video goes over the engine, transmission, fuel efficiency, front suspension, rear suspension, brakes, electronics, lighting, handling, and much more.
The Yamaha TTR125 might look like just another starter bike made for absolute beginners to learn to putt around on, but what if I told you it’s actually a good bike for the money, even for a non-beginner. Yeah, we’ll talk about how surprised I’ve been with this thing, and much more in this in-depth review of the Yamaha TTR125.

To clear up some confusion on jetting: If you have the mid RPM stumble, you would increase the float height to lower the fuel level about 1 mm below the float bowl mating surface. Check by using the clear tube on bowl drain method. If you don't have a stumble, then leave the float height alone and just jet like normal. The issue people have is not that they are jetting incorrectly, but that they are paying no attention to fuel level, which totally messes with fuel metering if it's off. So people throw away the stock carburetor thinking it just sucks, when it's actually just them not being thorough in tuning it. I couldn't believe how many posts I saw about people saying it's impossible to jet the stock carburetor correctly, not able to get the stumble to go away. It's too easy, just set fuel level down a bit if it has that rich stumble, then dial in the jetting from there

Frickin Jim's Affordable Adventures so for a person under 5 feet tall would it be too big to get on?
Fire Knight not necessarily but it would be if they are not experienced
Torture Test Magazine I have the same bike and his is the best vid I found on it
My ttr125l is stalling in cold weather when I slow down, or have it in idle, I think it is running to lean how do I adjust the carb so it runs richer?
Torture Test Magazine Can I use it if I’m 12
Watching you ride that TTR125 in the tight rocky trails in the desert makes me realise how slow I am
them cactus look scaryyy
Me too
😂😂same!
I recently rode a 85cc dirt bike for the first time as a 30yo man and it's easily the most fun I've ever had. All my friends are telling me I need a 250 but I'm a crawl before you walk type of guy . I'm gonna pick one of these up thanks to this review!
I came very very close to getting the TTR 125 I’m 27 yrs old and I’ve road before but it was back when I was a teenager I had 2 bikes growing up but I haven’t road in atleast a decade until recently I’m 6”2 and 215 pounds and the 125 was just way to uncomfortable and small for me depending on your height and weight you should look into the Yamaha TTR 230 there also recommended as a beginner bike for teens and adults as well I watched a ton of reviews on it before I made my final decision and I had a friend tell me about it and I was thinking the same thing with the crawl before you walk but I got one on this past Tuesday and gotta say personally the TTR 230 is also a good beginner bike
Thank for the feed back bro, I really appreciate it
@@gaberondon8757 what did you end up buying?
@@SeasideStrangler Nothing yet. I was waiting until Biden canceled my last 10k of debt but that's not gonna happen haha. Guess I'm gonna be on my Huffy for a while.
@@gaberondon8757 Ya im not gunna touch that subject but if I were you I wouldnt count on anything from the govt.
I’m 43 lol !!! I had crf230f, klx230f now I have this little ttr125 ! I really love it ! It’s a fun bike for everyone!!! Highly recommended
Same here
You've outdone yourself again
I just picked up an XR100 to teach the wife and nephew to ride ...then I took it out Enduro riding with a buddy. I found it enjoyable in the same ways you describe the ttr, little bikes are fun!
Oh, and another awesome review!
That Extremely dependable
HONDA XR-100 will still be running in 20 years if oil changed and air filter are regularly maintained where as that 💩 TTR will probably end up if a scrap pile of parts no matter what you do ! Like the Bic lighters of small trail bikes
The TTR 125 was my second bike and the bike I rode the most and rhe hardest. I loved mine and rode the hell out of it in the summer.
I agree. I just recently picked up a ttr 125 as a entry level enduro bike and can honestly say this bike is great for climbing steep hills and narrow trails. Though i fond the suspension quite mushy. Remedy BBR front and rear springs + a BBR frame cradle and chain guide. Really enjoyed your review. 👍🇺🇸
I started on a ttr125L and I loved it. Now I’m on a crf250x both are great bikes.
This was a very good review.
Not just because it validates my purchase.
Because it just nails the character of these little bikes so well.
I paid $1600 for an 08 ttr125L in very good condition.
At 9,000 ft elevation it simply took a slight turn on the pilot jet setting outwards (under carb bowl) to get it to start and run perfectly.
My carb is the dual cable model.
I left my airbox alone because I am an old squid who would never approach the hyper velocity shown in this video.
Fun to see what this machine is capable of though.
Holy smokes!
Thanks for watching!
I have to tell you, I watched your whole video through and I loved it. I am Planning to get one of these in April, and you really boosted my confidence. I subbed and liked keep up the good work.
Frickin Jim's Affordable Adventures that bike is so slow
Just bought one of these from my buddy (first bike :D) I can’t tell you how much fun it was, I was a little nervous to stick it in gear initially, but by the time I had to leave for work, I almost couldn’t force myself off it, best purchase of my life
This was my first bike and it teaches you good clutch control. It also lets you keep it a little longer.
I just got one for 500
Good review.
I built one for son years ago with bbr 150 kit, kx65 carb, lightened flywheel, yz85 forks, and custom longer shock. Have to say, it was a really a different bike, and so much fun.
I feel the same way about my DRZ125L. Very surprised by it's capabilities off-road, especially when riding tight single track in the mountains. The bike is great, nice suspension, excellent gearing and good power. The brakes are very good too, which I was not expecting. But no matter what I did to the tiny carb (20mm), it still wouldn't develop enough power. So I tossed it and installed a Mikuni 26mm, got the jetting dialed in (easy), and took the snorkel out of the airbox. Power increase is significant, and fueling is smoother and with a LOT more punch down low and in the mid-range, which is perfect for trail riding. Love these small trail bikes!
Great video. I bought a used TTR after seeing this video. Just wanted a bike to ride around my local area. So far its been great fun. I only ride for 30 to 60 minutes few times a week. Its alot of fun. Im 6 feet tall 210 pounds.
Nice, that's cool
That’s just what I needed to hear (or read) fixing time go get one.
@@wyldewest5613 these little bikes are stupid fun. I had a YZ 125 and TTR230 currently, I’d rather have this on tight technical trails. Currently selling the TTR230 and just riding my little 125L until the piggy bank has enough for a Beta Xtrainer. I am 5’ 10” and 185lbs, perfectly fine for it.
@@TheDriversPerspective just bought a Honda 150r then blew the engine 😭
I suddenly have the urge to run out and by a TTR125 and go play Super Jim.
I think you could out run me on that thing if I was on a KTM 690.
He would definitely get u on the hill climbs
The smaller the bike the easier to climb
Thanks man this helped a lot I just got my first bike (2006 ttr 125) and this was so helpful
Hey is that a good bike?
Do you think it’s a good bike for a beginner who has never owned a dirtbike? I’m thinking of getting one
I dont even like offroad but somehow I keep coming back to this masterpiece of a review. I reaaally wish you could have access to other bikes and do this more often :'c
2 in depth reviews in just under a month? yay! LOL
I really like the TTRs, and good to know about the uncorking and jetting thing, could get a few more years of life out of one of our family's bikes. :)
But don't even get me started on that cable choke! So confusing and unintuitive to use. Sure you can learn it eventually but it still just feels weird.
Yup! I'm on a roll! Yeah that cable choke is awful. Much more difficult to use than a plunger knob directly on the carburetor...
Very good information. Absolutely love your style of videos. Might be the best bike review channel for us normal people.
I use to ride one, i put some good upgrades on it. Back in the 70s-90s bikes like these were race bikes and I’m talking about supercross and championships. Because people thought they needed more power these bikes were then considered beginner bikes
Went from one of these to a yz250f to a yz450f to a ktm 530. Going from a trail to a motocross bike in the woods helped alot when going back to a trail bike. Mx bikes in the woods teach you clutch control like nothing else.
So I did get this bike 6months ago and have been having a really good time on it. It is small. I am 172cm, but I put bar risers 51mm on and then my lower back is fine standing up. Basically all you say in the video is spot on. It is a very fun and not scary bike and it does everything the big bikes does. It is a tractor... wheelspin on loose steep stuff. Not very fast. I love it. Its veey cheap very low maintenace. Havn't done anything exept tightening the chain :)
I'm 40 and 5 feet tall 120 pounds had one of these in 01 had for couple years loved it then got stolen. Moved way up north in Canada bought another in 2019. One great trail bike it's small light easy to control and throw around. Would definitely recommend for smaller riders or 6 footers apparently. Great video lots of info.
At 120 pounds I think you would be able to have a lot of fun on how I have my ttr set up, I did heavy duty springs frame cradle/skid plate, fmf4.1 exhaust system still wasn't able to give the top end a boost with the pipe and carb tuned right up so I put a vm24 carb in thats mostly tuned (float height and needle are good how ever pilot jet is too rich so I'm waiting on a mikuni jet kit to sort that out) added a big gun over rev cdi box and that gave a noticeable boost in the mid and top end, bottom feels same or a touch stronger swapped sprockets for extra gearing, 1 up and 2 down, first is slightly less tractor like but other gears are more usable, only thing now is to rebuild my front brake and replace rubber line with a braided one plus shoes and pads. I'm 215 pounds and noticed an increase in all departments so I'm willing to bet you at 120 would be able to fly on it through corners and maybe even actually jump it ( I've never been brave enough to get more then a foot or 2 of air on this bike for fear of breaking it)
I actually have a ttr 125 and I'm only twelve and it is so fun to ride I'm still a beginner but I'm really good the only thing I need to learn is how to turn it
I am 12 to how y’all are u and is it the small wheele one I am looking at getting one
@@Narutouzumaki-ki7ox Its a great beginner bike! I got mine when I was 5'2.
@@Jgk_125 no adult yet but im 5’8 so what bike should I get still got room to grow
I love my 2003 yamaha ttr125l, I just put heavy duty fork sprins on it and a heavy duty shock on the the back, made so much difference.
Very cool you did this video. I bought one for my girlfriend and she wheelie it into a wall and wouldn’t ride it after that. So I started riding it for a pit bike. I lived 2 blocks from the desert in Havasu. This bike became my bike to ride when out with the neighbors drinking beer while they rode their daughters ATV’s. I put an FMF pipe and skid plate and of course air filter. It became my favorite for exploring. It’s so light you can pick it up when needed. Wish I never sold it!
I’ve been tearing around my property on trails in the woods on my TTR110 (a it for the kids), and I’m shocked at how good it is. This 125 looks like more of the same only even better!
I just bought a 2003 le… just took my first ride. This is spot on. I’m 5”10 too lol.
Nice!!!!

Thank you for the videos. So well made and explained.
An idea for measuring fun factor....
You ride the same area and trails a lot. Pick 10 of your favorite obstacles on said trail. After hitting an obstacle decide if you would want to turn around and do it again right away. Every obstacle you want to hit again immediately gets a +1. Don’t want to hit again 0. Never want to hit again -1. That gives you a -10 to +10 spread to work with.
I've just sold my 450 because I love riding my wifes TTR125 so much.
It is my go to bike in the shed as it's just so much fun. Thanks for a great review!
I came across an '06 Honda CRF100 a few months ago, for a great price, so I picked it up. Turns out, that little bike is incredibly fun! I've since done some mods to it, heavier springs, frame cradle/skid plate, some good quality knobbies, and that's about all it needed. Runs like a top, that little 100cc motor pulls all the way to redline, likes to rev.. Maybe 10hp at the crank? I don't know. But it runs well, and I find myself riding it more that my XR250R.. There is just something about riding a small dirt bike that only weighs 165lbs, it's great fun!
Nice job thanks. We bought the exact bike from a relative for my 14 year old son. It’s nice to have such a in depth review to help us out.
I don't suppose you have a video showing how to tune the carb on this thing do you?
agreed
2nd that
@@PlateInStock I ended up going with a mikuni vm24 carb. Perfect start and throttle response every time. Worth every penny.
Very nice, you should do the TTR230, and maybe compare it to your CRF230 as well! The TTR line doesn't get enough credit for being a fun play bike lineup. For most riders, a 230 is good enough for just about anything! Not everyone needs a high revving, high maintenance 250 motocrosser. There's just something to be appreciated about a bulletproof, easy to maintain air cooled engine that will run forever and never leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere.
They were actually released in 2000 I have a 2000 and it’s great, this is the best video I’ve seen on a ttr ever
I’m looking at a 125TTRL. He’s got it listed for $850.. should I try and bring it down?
Cam Grogg oh yea I’d definitely say go cop that thing what year is it
DirtBikesFTW350 it was a 2000 i think.. super mint. Sold within an hour of uploading.. RIP ME
That's a great review, tons of really good real life info, good riding video, nice job.
Im so happy to see this vid, i have a ttr 125 and i love it, most people think is just a playing bike but is awesome thanks !
I’m 19 and I’ve had a 2007 TTR 125L since I was 11. It’s not the biggest or fastest. But it is still extremely fun to ride to this day! Also, the maintenance is little to none. I’ve only had to replace the air filter once and I give it an oil change every two years.
i had a ttr 125 90 and 50. rode with my sons at 185 lbs and I am 5'6''. it was a blast and it was so much fun on table tops and doubles. loads of fun, the trail riding little brother of the yz
Great test & new subscriber! Just bought a new '21 TTR 125LE & '21 Raptor 700R-SE for my son & I. Ive been riding/racing since late 80s but my son is fairly new. We are having a blast! Already modded my '21 Raptor:) Thanks! - Ohio.
This is exactly the vid I was looking for thanks
Great vid. Open air box and adjust the float only without jetting changes-wow. Any more info on that carb float adjustment you did would be super helpful!
This video is three years old, so I'm not expecting a lot of eyes on this comment, but I agree 100% on this thing. I got one a couple years ago as my steed of choice at my buddy's pit bike mini-moto, and it's absolutely my preferred bang around toy just goofing off on the trails around here. It's small enough to get unstuck by myself, loads of low end grunt, and a day it doesn't get dumped is rare, and this far all I've broken was a brake lever. Riding a smaller bike has also taught me a lot about proper riding position and technique, which will make a larger bike seem like nirvana.
Very nice additions, and very in-depth. The dual-sport/plated possibilities are a nice touch, who doesn't like to ride a dirt bike on the street? And thanks for the props!
My 2018 Kawasaki KLX140L has the same choke system. It is a great tool for beginners like me and amazing to have during winter riding. You don’t have to stop and reach down to the carb you just push down on the button right in front of you
This is my first bike absolutely amazing I honestly do perfectly fine with the clutch
We picked one of these up for my wife a few years back. My friends and I have ridden it more than she has! Fun bike for the money and tough as nails.
Oof does she still ride it?
Wylde West Yea she loves it, but my nephew has been getting more seat time on it than any of us lately. Taught him how to ride, shift and jump on that bike. He also gets to learn to wrench on it the rare occasions it actually needs maintenance. Might need a new clutch within the next year... finally!
That Dude Rides nice dude
I love these little bikes!!!! I ride my friends any chance i get!! Its definitely one of my favorite little bike.....I've had a KLX110, KX85, and KX125....for sure that little TTR is way more fun then all of the bikes ive had.....so light so nimble and just so much damn fun
I love my TTR125, is always a fun bike even having bikes like the CRF450X and MT09 i pick up the ttr and have a blast.
I'm glad the little ttr is getting some love.
It was one of my favorite bikes growing up. I actually thought it was an upgrade from my 85cc two stroke, i realized later on that it was because It was so much easier to control.
That little bike had the most influence on how I developed as a rider.
It's basically the ruger 10/22 of dirtbikes.
I’ve had so many bikes over the years, and really looking forward to picking one of these up. It’s definitely not just a beginner bike, I’m excited to have some fun on one.
My buddy bought one for a pit bike and I laughed at him. After playing around on it, I feel in love with it, to the point I want one. It is no rocket, but it will literally go anywhere. I can actually go up hills with it that I can’t climb on my yz250. And the front end handles so good, I never get that loose front feel and it gives extreme confidence.
I like how you show it’s still a fun buck and still can rip
Good video. I was not interested in this bike but the good review kept me here. Educational 👍🏻
somebody just ACED a video , great job !

My dad has the ttr125e, and it was the first bike I have ever rode. Everytime I shift gears up the thing jumps in speed so quickly that it was scary almost. I even fell trying 4th and 5th gear because of it, but still, I love riding it since its nice and small, not too big and heavy, but perfect.
Just bought 125L for my kids. Unexpectable torque on the first gear. And yes, fun-factor is very high! I had real adrenaline at the test drive. It's not comparable to my transalp, it's something different. It's like.. Like to return in to your youth and have fun with your bicycle again. ))
Thanks for video. My english isn't well, but that things i've grasp from you are very close to my expectation.
We bought my wife a klx140L. I've been riding it while she drives the truck and my only complaint at this size for a big guy is the narrow front tire and the power loss on top. Thanks for the great review. Also, you were hauling ass
I just found out that I’ve been running my ttr125e with no air filter for years and I never noticed anything being wrong because it always runs great. ttr125’s are indestructible
Cool video dude. I think you just helped me decide what my daughters first bike will be. Keep on having fun
Best rating method is smiles per gallon (or dollar)
im 6ft i have an 04 ttr125 small wheel milled flywheel . high compression piston... fmf pc4 . mod airbox. jetted.. and a big gun cdi. i have over 60 bikes and this little ttr is still one of my all time favorite small biikes. it will go anywhere..
I watched your KDX video where you compare it to the CRF250. This is the second. video I’ve watched.
Some comments:
The way you edit your vids makes the vids feel like I’m getting robocall. It’s a little unsettling.
But that said, you’re analyses on the two vids I’ve watched is very very (that’s two “verys”) good!
I’ve ridden all three of the aforementioned bikes, so I speak from experience.
A few comments though:
1) Dealing with California emissions bullshit doesn’t apply to everybody else.
2) go up one tooth on the front sprocket of the TTR125. You’ll make first gear useable (not to mention all the other gears more useable), and you’ll top 60mph easily. Cost about $20.
3) You mentioned in the KDX video that you’re 140lbs. You should’ve mentioned that in this video as well. You’re obviously a really good rider, but discussing suspensions must always include the weight of the rider.
No disrespect to light riders. My buddy across the street from me is 140lbs., and he rides CR500s. He’s the best rider I’ve ever seen. My point being that most recreational riders need to know what suspension will handle a given weight of rider.
The 125 4 strokes are so much fun. Back when my wife and I got together, I traded a clapped KX250 I had for a DRZ125 hoping to get her into riding. I ripped around on that bike so much lol. Easy to wheelie, and really fun to run WFO everywhere. And at that time, 6'3" 290 lol.
Best review ever!!
You are the Motor Trend of dirt bikes
Just got my first dirt bike and it was a TTR 125 and I love it
I'm 6 ft 2 and I love this bike
Thanks. This was a great video for Dad ready to buy one of these for my kids.
I just bought my first dirt bike, ttr125 2002! My 18th birthday present to myself:) cool review!
First thing you wanna do assuming all the bearings are good greased with no play is a bbr frame cradle and skid plate , then bbr or equivalent heavier fork springs and rear spring, then if you want to give it a fair bump in all around performance the vm24 mikuni carb is perfect just make sure to pick up a jet kit, I had the vm20 tuned perfectly but the drop off at higher mid range was very noticable with big gun over rev cdi fmf 4.1 and the vm24 (i got the niche one with already modified cap ) low end is still strong maybr a touch stronger but upper mid and top end is where I really noticed the difference very suprising for being a 125 4t kids bike. My bike the handling noticeably improved after the bbr cradle stiffened everything up over the ruts and cornering, springs really helped too how ever I am 215 pounds so it will still bottom the forks out in the corner and I'm not sure 15 weight fork oil would really help that, factory brakes are a little lack luster for the power and my weight but I am putting ebc performance pads and shoes on it along with braided front Blake like and master and caliper rebuild as the front brake is getting air into the system. That said average kid or younger teen this would as set up be a hell of a bike
I have a ttr 125 and it’s an OK bike. It’s a 2011 ttr 125 and I put an fmf exaust on it a little over a month ago. The bike sounds amazing with the fmf and runs good with it. I got it back in August and I was supposed to get a kx85 but my friends dad said I couldn’t handle a 2 stroke. Not to mention I’m a beginner. I used to have a pit bike before I got my ttr but I still thought I would be able to handle the 2 stroke. I learned all the gears on the ttr 125 in about 2 hours and i rip on that thing full speed, wheelies and a lot of that stuff now. I want to get a 2 stroke hopefully within the next year :/
I’m not a beginner. This is a good bike. I think you just made me buy a bike.
Love your reviews getting straight to the point without a dumb ass 2 min intro
I know this was 4 years ago but I just want to say that this is my favort bike, even though has not much power but because of you I do not care if you cant brake it no one can best bike ever. And if you look at yamahs wed thay have not change eny but the plastics, so lets give a lot of credit to yamaha.
Float adjustment did help my TTR, but the VM24 carb made a much better running bike, I may or may not be building a street legal TTR Grom killer.
Nice! Post up a little video if you do. Street legal ttr would be sick
Best youtuber I’m new to motor cross in get real and this is helpful to buying my first bike
I miss my ttr. I wish I never sold it haha. But I know have a crf450r. It’s a nice bike but every now and then I wish I had a litter putter to mess around on. I watched this video when I first got my ttr and it gave me confidence to use it.

I bought my ttr yesterday for trade of my blaster and 150 bucks and since i never rode a bike before i was a little nervous about riding it but after a couple tries i liked it
Great video, very well narrated!
Great video! I’ve ridden one of these before, and it is so much fun for everything, from tight trails to even cruising on the road. I love those bikes
I have a TT-R 125LE and I kept my jetting at the stock 15 pilot jet, 100 main, and my bike is running super lean when I tuned in the float level, so I'm pretty much gonna have to upsize my jets anyway, along with an exhaust, and some performance mods. If you're a beginner like I was, you will really learn how to ride a dirt bike, and it helped me learn tricks of motocross, like how to corner in ruts, scrub, etc. I RECOMMEND A TT-R TO ANYBODY WHO IS LEARNING TO RIDE!!!!
I used to ride my ttr 5th gear pinned threw the toughest trails around where I live growing up people underestimate them not to mention never broke down ever in the 5 years of pissd pounding even threw the winter I'd ride it
I love these little bikes.
good job on the review. I really like your reviews. I have a TTR 125 le and I love going slow trail riding in my backwoods. i have a giant trail back there.
Im 13 and looking to buy a bike second hand and this reveiw shows that this is the exact bike for me all the other reviews r so bad cuz they don't know anything i have some experience so this is a great bike for me, my dad doesn't want me to drive faster than 60 sp this is a bike he will let me get 2🎉❤

thanks for an honest review these are great bikes not to be overlooked
I just picked up 2 of them for 850.00. They need a couple of things but they both run . It's kinda of fun to play around with .I ride a 2018 beta 250rr ,kx 125 ,cr 125 and a dr 400 sm so this feels like a toy but fun . I'm going to use them to teach my kids how to use a clutch
