Just revisited this video to show my boyfriend. I looked up excursion inflatable raft and found your channel years ago and you got me into fishing. This video is definition of started from the bottom now were here with how far you've come! Thanks for the amazing videos
My uncle and I spent a lot time in his 2-man raft fishing the small lakes and ponds around the Central Coast. We made the same wood floor and built an A-frame mount for his trolling motor and put a motorcycle battery in the back - worked great. Thanks for the vid.
This reminded me of my first inflatable boat I built for lake fishing...I had electronic motor as well.. Only work when there is no wind...and too much work in setting it up and close it out.. Love your video and voice.. Thank you
Yes, I am currently looking into kayaks. Something affordable and that will suit my goals. BTW, Sarah showed my how you were able to find the spear gun after your buddy got drifted away. That's awesome!!!
Doesn't look like I can PM you through RUclips or Google+... I am interested though if you have one you're selling. Would love to talk to you about it. Since I can't reach you directly, can you email me? Mattswithans@yahoo.com
Well you know, you get back what you put out. Filming adventures is not an easy thing, and editing is a whole other beast, so thank you for taking the time. You have a real knack for creating very entertaining videos, and the growth of your channel shows! Because of your vids, I've caught myself some surf perch, one croaker (in Oceanside, SoCal), and hopefully soon, crab! Speaking of crab, there's a youtube of a guy crabbing with this kayak! He's picking up his crab pots a little ways offshore. A possibility in the Bay? I've never been there and I don't know how close these guys are to you, but yesterday I called Headwaters in Lodi about the kayak. You can rent it out for the day, and if you decide to order one, they said they can apply the rental fee paid. They even said to bring your fishing gear for the bass in the lake. Might as well try it the way you want to use it. Just call them a few days before to make sure the demo is there to use. Good luck and have fun kayak hunting!
you sir are a genius, i will most definitely try this out, I've always been a bank fisherman, thank you so much for this idea, i also go to the bay alot, hope to get a chance to fish with you
Idk about a genius haha. If it's just you i'd actually look into a kayak. This is fun and all but not really practical considering and the set up time and parts needed to haul around. Unless you have a truck and lots of storage space that is.
Literally bought an excursion 5 to take to HMB this year. Then I see this. Awesome! Also a tip, those weights are great but can slide between rocks. I switched to a 20lb dumbbell, and it doesn't snag on anything!
Another great video Matts and great job creating the floor and setting up your camera, but make sure to figure out a way to wear your inflatable life jacket and still be able to use your GoPro chess harness. I am sure you will be able to figure it out .
looks like a lot of fun man!! You really should get a life-jacket though, swimming fully clothed is not an easy task and you never know what could go wrong out there.
I have a fishing raft just like that, but I haven't taken it out on the water yet because I need the conditions to be absolutely flat, because even if the water is a little rough I don't want to risk it. I also need to make the flooring for my raft which you made in this video, and I need to get a trolling motor or maybe even a small petrol motor to put on it. I'd also recommend that you buy a life jacket, better to be safe then sorry. I've heard of people taking those rafts out to sea and using them to fish, I'd be way to scared to do that.
matty d keyboard warrior.. lmao... no doubt u need to face ur fears, but from what the dude said he being smart about it, as u obviously dont know where hes fishing... being stupid doesnt make u tough.. just makes u stupid..
nice little boat man. not sure where you live but say you know the water dropped down at a lake locally or whatever go hiking and look for lures anchors props ect. i actually fund a anchor the other day at lake after water dropped around 25-30 feet since last time i was out. found a bunch lures also. but ya being on the water is better then shore im on shore for now. i bought a cheapy 8 foot kayak then found out need a 10 footer to be on the upper lake here but i can use the 8 footer on the smaller 3 mile lake though. i think i need to pimp it out with some pontoons and make it a little more fisher friendly since its the bare bones model. but i cant wait to get it out. i just been lazy on fixing it up for now. but anyways nice vids keep slaying em.
What type of pump do you have. I actually have the excursion 5 with the trolling motor I build a floor just as you did 😮but it was stored in a place that had a fire. But your right the motor and battery is the way to go.
I know your located in California and so am I lol... I'm trying to start fishing with an inflatable boat but with all the regulations I'm unsure if I would need to register or get any special permission... btw great videos you make it look so fun that I've decided to get in to fishing
Got a sevylor supercaravelle, paddles were total garbage, mood decent when I first used them and then both snapped on one trip, had to get towed back in by someone in a tinny who happened to go past me 1 hr later. Don't risk it with the standard paddles mate, had to use my kayak paddle for a while there, now I've got other paddles for it and a trolling motor, so much better
Another great vid, Matts! Thanks for sharing your experiences. I just got a trolling motor this summer (that $100 Minn Kota) for my canoe, and I can honestly say the best decision I made was buying an agm battery. Only a third of the weight of those huge marine deep cycle batteries. I bought the Mighty Max 12V 35aH sealed batt from Amazon ($65). I see this kind of batt used by kayak anglers. The middle speed on that Minn Kota should allow you to putt-putt around the harbor for at least a few hours, as the slowest speed on the motor uses only 5aH. I did splurge and buy the Minn Kota Power Center. Keeps my electronics powered up on the water. Overall, I spent about $250 for my setup. The raft and motor is an excellent idea, Matts. Registration is only about $40/yr (or is it every other year?). Hours of fun! Great to see your pfd close by. Do you think those CO2 inflatable pfds allow you to wear your gopro harness on top? Fish on!
That doesn't sound like a bad price at all. Thanks for the tip on the battery. I knew those light weight ones existed but it would totally slip my mind if I wanted to get a battery I bet. I think I'm going the kayak route though. I'll keep the raft for occasionally fun.I'd wear the gopro under the inflatable and there would be space for it. I could also adjust the straps to fit over the cheaper ones too. It was just so nice out there that I felt completely safe
Yes, it looked like a beautiful day out there! A kayak is a great idea. My husband and I were fishing the Delta today in the canoe. The wake from one of the big boats almost swamped us. You wouldn't have that problem with a sit-on-top kayak. If you can, try a few out extensively before you buy. The seats tend to be unforgiving, and numb-butt is a downer. CCK sometimes has demo days, and I think there's a CCK in the Bay Area. Looking forward to your next adventure!
That thing looks awesome. I see so many applications for that. I'm really considering getting a kayak now. Probably a sit on top. I want to try some out but don't want to pay $25 an hour for a rental. I'd rather put that money towards a kayak! I'll probably also end up going out to the open ocean once I get training, the gear and feel safe so something more streamlined is probably more appropriate for me. Excited for you too! I love how this little RUclips channel is opening many doors of fishing and experience to me!
I'd go fishing with my son in streams and rivers in the Eastern Sierra's, my son doesn't know how to swim so I bought a pack that had a CO2 cartridge that would inflate a life preserver, it went around his waist, I have one too and it doesn't get in the way, it may not the best but it gave me a little peace of mind knowing if you got into trouble he/we had plan B that he could rely on. When water is involved I take no chances, sh-t happens. Cheers!!
Cesar Gonzalez do yourself a favor and use regular pfds. those are recommended for people who know how to swim. chances of failure are slim, but if you dont keep up with maintenence, it will happen.
Hi Matts, I have the excursion 5, and I have the intex 40 trolling motor. To install the trolling motor on the inflatable boat, I had to also buy the motor mount, walmart marine maxx battery 29DC, and the motor itself; plus, a boat registration if there's any non-human powered engine, yes trolling motor needs registration. Now, you also need life vest, distress signal (air horn/flame stick). Overall, it costs me ~$500, and it's sufficient to get me out into the middle of San Diego Bay to catch lobster. I tried to get out of the Mission Bay jetty (in SD) once but it's just too much for an inflatable boat to handle, so yea, I just stay in the bay. Launching (installing all the stuffs) and packing (uninstalling everything) is still a nightmare to me, as I go solo; still, it's an option when I don't have a 4x4 truck to tow, nor do I have a real boat. ;-) Lobster season is 2 weeks away, hopefully I will catch some nice ones this year.
I think hauling all this stuff around is too much for what I'm going after. Sounds like a good fit for your needs though. Might look into a kayak instead
I expected you to be seasick again, but the waters looked pretty calm. You probably took a Dramamine. You should be able to wear a PFD and wear the GoPro attached to your shoulder strap with the clip. I'd feel better if you were wearing a vest, since you're fishing on a boat alone.
I work where the green build is on the dock! I fish sometimes off the dock on my lunch break and I usually just catch baby sharks. Not a very good spot, too many sea lions. The jetty by RV parking on Highway 1 is better.
for getting out there youd be better off buying an inflatable kayak like the one i have advanced elements sport or a cheaper k2 iflatible kayak. they track better and you could actually paddle faster. i kayak fish for rockfish off mine and can even paddle agaist a strong current. Much safer option. also invest in a kife jacket. thanks for the great videos. Cheers
Thanks! we go crabbing almost weekly. Up here in Canada its open all year round but rockfish and ling close in the fall/winter. Kayak fishing is great. gets you just that little extra distance. The inflatable ones are really great because they let you bring the kayak places you can't get to with a boat while keeping the whole thing light. There are versions of the Advanced elements series that are light but still solid for ocean conditions. The sport is only 26 pounds and is a good all round kayak for fishing. Intex k1 and k2 are a good budget option. Sometimes I pack it for work trips 26 pound kayak + small crab trap and collapsible fishing rod and life jacket, a few lures and its still under 50 pounds in an airline approved size. I've also fished for salmon off my kayak... what a rush
Got skunked myself today good sir....And funny, i just bought this $22 raft at Walmart which actually looks surprisingly sturdy and roomy. going to test my luck with it on the high seas of the long island sound. Weird how this vid was in my recommendations tho, almost like google read my mind.
what I really want to see, is what kind of motorcycle you ride. BTW love your channel, one of my favorites. You don't fluff your videos up too much and keep it real but entertaining and motivating. Also, you might want to do a video sometime letting people know about the numerous marine sanctuaries up and down the coast and the restrictions. I got lucky but realized later when I got home that I was in one.
Nice video ,been watching ur channel .i have a question,I live in the Bay Area n thinking to buy that same raft n trolling motor,do u need license to use the trolling boat or just the fishing license will work?
awesome video man, your ripple effect transition cracked me up. sorry you didn't catch anything bigger but sometimes it's about the journey not the destination right?
Cool video. I am just starting to get into kayak fishing. I,too, am finding out how difficult it is to paddle. As for trolling motor, like many said, you'd need to register. Though it doesn't cost as much as a car, you do need to keep paying as long as you own the boat... Even if you take the motor off. If you can somehow rig up a bicycle peddle to power your boat, that wouldn't need registration. Challenge?
I might look into getting a kayak instead. way more maneuverable and you don't need to register it. HEY Your picture looks awfully familiar. I could spot that place a mile away! My friend caught his first ling there ;)
haha, yeah, it's one of the spots that came as a result of hours of studying your videos. :) though i gotta tell you... some of the spots that I ventured out to as a result... are borderline suicidal. One time, I got stuck about 50 ft up on a climb, after a full day of venturing... about a mile away from where my car was parked. Equipped with full gears. (Tackle box, back pack, ice box, and 2 rods) I debated whether to retract a mile back or keep looking for a path back up to climb. I kept pushing forward... and then sun started to set. I was on this climb... stiff drops on both sides. And I did something that I should not have. I peeked down. That's when I realized, I went too far. My legs just went dead... and wouldn't move. Footing started to give... I started to slip a bit. I grabbed onto a small plant with everything I had. From there I clawed another 10 ft up... to the top. I sat down on that cliff looking down and said to myself... my life is worth more than finding these honey holes. So, I did the next most sensible thing. I got me a kayak! haha. Yeah, no more repelling down on green ropes or getting stuck trying to climb back up. In a strange round about way... your videos led me to my new adventures of kayak fishing!
Yeah man, some of those areas are VERY sketchy. Loose rocks are no joke and once you start tumbling, there's almost no hope to stop yourself before slamming on rocks below. All these comments are making me look at kayaks. Think I'm going to get one soon
I sure miss that old fish off-loading pier in the middle of Pillar Point Marina...It's gone now as you know... too bad... piece of history gone. Caught a lot of rock crab around it... even one lingcod... 16" only... oh well...:-(
hey Matts, I did actually get one of these, the guy I bought it from had the floorboards he made himself already! so it was good to go. I found it incredibly hard to paddle fast though. I resorted to stepping out of the boat and walking it lol, like a glorified boogieboard to hold all my traps. The water I crab in Hawaii was only chest deep at most. It didn't work the way I hoped, and it was way too slow so I gave up on it and sold it for the same price. what do you think of the paddling?
hi there ... what anchor is good for that boat? is the dumbbell good enough? of i need a bruce / claw anchor? im fishing in river .. non tidal to slow tide
very easy. little wobbly at the cuts but if you stand in the middle of a board it's very stable. Now if there were big swells that would be a different story
I know this is an 2016, video. it's 2020. I'm in the market for a small single person inflatable kayak for harbor and lake fishing. I need a one that will take my weight + few equipment. Don't want an expensive hard shell kayak, inflatable for portability and easy storage. What's you thoughts ?
Just revisited this video to show my boyfriend. I looked up excursion inflatable raft and found your channel years ago and you got me into fishing. This video is definition of started from the bottom now were here with how far you've come! Thanks for the amazing videos
You are a genius. Never would of thought of doing that. I'm gonna have to make that for my raft now!
Yay! Another video from Matt to make my morning better!!
Dude- I love your channel and how thrifty you are ! Epic- nothing keeps you from fishing- awesome.
I like your videos lol always so creative and full of fun.
Nice! looks like you didn't get sea sick this time. All that seaweed tho lol. brilliant idea nice and sturdy raft.
My uncle and I spent a lot time in his 2-man raft fishing the small lakes and ponds around the Central Coast. We made the same wood floor and built an A-frame mount for his trolling motor and put a motorcycle battery in the back - worked great. Thanks for the vid.
Is it helpful to have a wood floor?
This reminded me of my first inflatable boat I built for lake fishing...I had electronic motor as well.. Only work when there is no wind...and too much work in setting it up and close it out.. Love your video and voice.. Thank you

Hi Matts,
I have the excursion 5, and I have the intex 40 trolling motor.

Got skunked myself today good sir....And funny, i just bought this $22 raft at Walmart which actually looks surprisingly sturdy and roomy. going to test my luck with it on the high seas of the long island sound. Weird how this vid was in my recommendations tho, almost like google read my mind.
Most likely heard you talking about a raft and recommended it. Almost for sure lol
matt buy your self a skiff fiberglass something you can still tow with the honda .
Matts, you ever tried a Deeper ?a smart portable fish finder. if you do, can you do a review on it?
3:46 behind ur back a sea ufo. Crayyyzee!
Birds lol
I have caught lizard fish in the Gulf of Mexico I guess they're everywhere
what I really want to see, is what kind of motorcycle you ride.
Good idea. Thanks man. I'll try to include the yamaha in some fishing videos in the future
Seems very sturdy. I want one but just for the intercostales area and river
though i gotta tell you... some of the spots that I ventured out to as a result... are borderline suicidal.
One time, I got stuck about 50 ft up on a climb, after a full day of venturing... about a mile away from where my car was parked.
Equipped with full gears. (Tackle box, back pack, ice box, and 2 rods)
I debated whether to retract a mile back or keep looking for a path back up to climb.
In a strange round about way... your videos led me to my new adventures of kayak fishing!
another vote for the kayak its the way to go
Yeah man, some of those areas are VERY sketchy. Loose rocks are no joke and once you start tumbling, there's almost no hope to stop yourself before slamming on rocks below. All these comments are making me look at kayaks. Think I'm going to get one soon
Didnt you attached the floorpanels to eachother? Or are they just 3 lose floorpanels?
I sure miss that old fish off-loading pier in the middle of Pillar Point Marina...It's gone now as you know... too bad... piece of history gone. Caught a lot of rock crab around it... even one lingcod... 16" only... oh well...:-(
I’ve seen a lot of videos that made a one piece plywood bottom. Did it seem less secure do you think since you used a three piece bottom?
hey Matts, I did actually get one of these, the guy I bought it from had the floorboards he made himself already! so it was good to go. I found it incredibly hard to paddle fast though. I resorted to stepping out of the boat and walking it lol, like a glorified boogieboard to hold all my traps. The water I crab in Hawaii was only chest deep at most. It didn't work the way I hoped, and it was way too slow so I gave up on it and sold it for the same price. what do you think of the paddling?
loll that's hella funny man. Big ass luxury floating spa
good video
wait.. the floor is made of 3 pieces.. so if you step on one piece, won't the other 2 pieces pop up and come apart?
hi there ... what anchor is good for that boat? is the dumbbell good enough? of i need a bruce / claw anchor? im fishing in river .. non tidal to slow tide
Should have cut the carpet big and rolled under and lapped across the bottom of the wood. But otherwise looks good.
Let's go fishing Dude....Wazzup
Do you find that with a floor made in 3 sections, you get any loss in stability, or do they stay pretty flat and stable?
great vid. how did you like the platform? was it easy to stand up and fish?
very easy. little wobbly at the cuts but if you stand in the middle of a board it's very stable. Now if there were big swells that would be a different story
are you still using your raft? if not is it for sale? me and my boy been looking for a fishing raft but cant find this brand anywhere.
Are you at the "Jaws" in Pillar Point Harbor?
Nice video man, you gonna do anymore raft videos in the future?
i never took mine out to paddle before, always with the trolling motor on.
Clover Vue you should try it once just for the experience.
me and my friend spent 2 days making a floor for his raft and never tried it hahaha. that's was 5 months ago!
Do you think I could take my 18ft fish and ski out for salmon what app do you use for tides and swells
hey mat how much did it cost to put in the flooring?
Why did you paint the boards with primer?
This is funny
My Bruddah you got to invest in a Hobie and come up to Washington and fish with us!
Rowing would be a bit more efficient with the seat a few more inches toward the bow. :)
Hey Matt, where did you get your yellow net bucket to keep your baits?
It's a Lindy Tamer. Got it from amazon. it's the 1gallon size
thanks
