Before I found this video, there was little info on how to pair an inflatable boat with proper trolling motor, shaft length, and proper battery. Thanks very much for the info bro!!
Thanks for the tips. We bought one of these along with a Minn Kota Max 55lb trolling motor to start using on our camping trips this summer to do some cruising and exploring. I'm planning to use some PVC pipe and a tarp to make an awning using the rod holders as mounts for the top......really excited to get it going.
Bama3Dr you're going to love it. Take a look at our other vids, they show that these boosts are much more rugged than they look. We use a 40 lb thrust, I would definitely recommend a group 31 marine battery for your motor.
The PNW I definitely will check out your other videos. I’ve been thinking about what batteries to go with and I think I’ve settled on the 35ah sealed lead acid batteries that Harbor Freight sells. I’m planning to connect 3 of them in parallel to start and then add a 4th if needed. I like those because they’re light and will be easier to manage. We’ll probably just use the boat for 1 or 2 hour trips so the 3 batteries may be plenty, especially if we’re not running wide open all the time. We got a good deal on the Max motor and it’s supposed to be much more efficient at partial throttle than a standard trolling motor.
@@JeffPeebles I'm going to try to put together a video of the setup once I get it all together......hoping to finish the build over the next few weekends so we can try it out.

EatShredSleep87 no, I haven't had any issues with that. We keep other things in the box so the lid is coming off often.. It's a pretty good way to stow the batteries plus it gives you a small table
Also, what kind of battery would I need? Can I hook up the motor directly to the battery without anything else? Or do I need to buy the box and wires as well? Sorry, I've very new to this and I've just started my research.

They may be made by the same people, but I've never had a problem with Minn Kota. @@ThePNW Thanks for the reply would you be kind enough to send me a link to a battery and battery box plus the leads and a charger as im clueless with this
Hello CJC, I used to wedge my 60-pound lead acid battery between the rear seat and the side. The battery would chafe the raft all day long and never caused any problems. If you’re using a lead acid battery I recommend putting it in a battery box. If the battery tips over the acid WILL put a hole in the raft!
Hi. What size battery (amp hours) is needed for the motor? For example, I am looking at “Group 27 Deep Cycle Marine Gel Battery, 88 Amp Hours “or “Deep Cycle Flooded Marine Battery, 90 Amp Hours,” or “Deep Cycle Flooded Marine Gel, 75 Amp Hours” etc. Thanks.
Hi I have a question. Is the second battery for backup in case the first one dies? Or are they both connected to the first one? Kinda confused on that one thanks!
Yes- when I carried two batteries I would connect to the second battery before starting back home. You can connect and run the batteries parallel but if one battery got me there I know a second would get me back…

Man you have the best review video of this boat on youtube! I did the maiden voyage this weekend with the minn kota 40 lb of thrust as well all went fine, I had to deflate chamber 2 while inflating number 3 as while inflating chamber 3 it stretched chamber 2 or was it because of air getting warmer as the boat was sitting under the sun while I was inflating?
@@jetrg12 thank you! Did you have fun? It could be both... Inflating #3 puts pressure on #2 so you may have to let some air out. But yes, air temp plays a big part in the chamber pressure.

Hey dude, so I'm trying to get 2 12v batteries hooked up in series to make it 24v to power my 86lb thrust trolling motor but being a newbie I'm not really sure what kind of cables I will need to connect battery - battery. As in do I need to buy mini jumpers? And if so do I need to use the negative or positive cable to connect said batteries. Sorry if the questions a little confusing and or not detailed enough but thanks anyway!
I run my two batteries parallel sometimes.. on an 86lb thrust motor you're going to need 8 gauge wire then connect them to a battery terminal connector...
@@ThePNW Really? Interesting, and you havent had any issues running them parallel with a 86lb thrust? I kept reading it may work at half power, or blow something out in the battery making it smoke or something similar. I'll have to give that a shot this week though, much appreciated!
Ahh good to know, I have a 40lb aswell as 2 100ah 12v batteries, so maybe I'll do just the same. Any idea how long you get per battery, consistent medium power use?
Gregory Grimes that's pretty much exactly what I'm using. Its hard to say because I use slow speeds mostly... Over never run out of power with my batteries though!
I recently got an Exursion 5. Your video has been super helpful, thank you =) Do you usually bring the deflated boat to the spot and inflate it and set up there? or do you keep them inflated and just haul there? The PNW I have an excursion 4, I think 30 lbs is recommended for that boat. Please. Let me know if you agree and if 30 length or 36 length. Thank you 🙏🏻
I know that in Michigan you don’t need to register it as long as it’s under 20’ and doesn’t have a permanently fixed motor. That was a huge relief because I don’t want to spend the money on registering it!
Question for you, I have this setup except for a Newport Vessels motor. Boat is inflated to 10cm and I’m scared to use full throttle on the motor as the transom area starts to get creases and I’m worried about tearing the boat then losing everything. My motor had 5 speeds and on speed 3 it goes 2mph and the boat doesn’t crease. But on speed 4 or 5 (5 gets 4mph) the pushing of the motor starts creasing and folding the transom area. Curious if you think this is normal. Thanks
Ken Dungey yes, just put a little more pressure in the third chamber. The motor is still going to tuck, so adjust shaft angle to counter it. Remember, these aren’t pool toys- they can handle the load. Please, subscribe for more.
The PNW thank you for the reply. Wouldn’t adjusting the shaft angle higher or lower still make it push forward and tuck in the same amount when full throttle? And over inflate the 3rd chamber to compensate for the tucking? And thanks for that verbiage, I couldn’t think of a good word to explain it 👍
Ken Dungey I know- it goes against what I said in this vid... but putting a little more air pressure in the third chamber will help keep the motor in place rather than “sagging” at full speed. But just a few pumps, not to a point where it’s stiff! And adjusting the angle will help keep equal pressure on the motor mount so you’ll get more out of your motor at full speed. When the motor tucks it’s yanking on the top two motor mount bolts.
Ken Dungey take a look at 4:10 Motor Selection For The Intex Excursion - Minn Kota That’s the angle adjustment I’m referring to... the motor should be submerged 6” (if I remember right).

I just bought this boat and I noticed something that isn't mentioned in the owners manual. Can someone please help me with this if you know? The manual states you must inflate the boat in the correct sequence (chambers one thru three) and chambers two and three must match up to the 10 cm mark for proper inflation. However, I notice when we pump up chamber two to 10 cm then pump chamber three to 10 cm it makes chamber two go past the 10 cm mark. Does anyone know if it was intended to do that to make the chamber two more solid or are you supposed to decrease the pressure in chamber two to match 10 cm? Because I have been making sure the chambers match 10 cm but what ends up happening is pumping up then deflating then pumping up and deflating to get both at the correct pressure which is super annoying and a waste of energy.
Justin Ricolcol yup! Inflating number three puts pressure on number 2 leaving it overinflated. You'll get the hang of it. I fill number 2 to 10 cm then number 3. Then if #2 has too much pressure after that I'll let some air out. I didn't get too into in this vid but going over 10cm is ok, especially if you're going to use higher speeds on your motor. But, as the air temperature gets hotter throughout the day keep an eye on the air pressure
When I made this vid I had two group 31 lead acid batteries weighing 60 pounds each. Now I use one lithium battery putting out as much power as both of the lead acid bbut weighs 30 pounds
Thanks for the video. We just bought an excursion 5 and are looking for a motor and battery. This is great advice. We just recently moved to the PNW and are looking for some great spots to explore. Any suggestions? Look forward to watching your videos. Thanks.
Hey! I have been watching couple of your videos! Very informative and good explanation! I have a question for you, i’ve been reading in the comments that you change to alligator clamps instead of the plug in due to overheating. That happen after how much use? I live in berlin and for using the boat i can only around 4-5 months in the year, then is really cold. You think for that time would be good the plug in? And when using the battery you need to keep it in the dark right? Otherwise it damage?. I am new in all of this stuff! Thanks for your help!
Hello Sebastion.. the plug does work well, after a year or started to get hot though that's why I switched to alligator close. No... The battery does not need to be in the dark but you should put it in a box so it doesn't get wet...
You can watch my other videos to see it in motion to judge its speed. It'll move quickly at top speed. Even when fully loaded it'll easily surpass anything human powered and will continue to do so long after the paddler is tired

Hello fatelook.. Please, subscribe and take a look at my other vids. I go over that info..
Thank you man
The link to the premade battery box is broken, would you mind if I asked what they are called? I like that there is essentially a kill switch in case you are worried someone might take it.

We used a 50-gallon originally and it worked fine. I might get another over next summer
i see a lot of ppl put plywood floors...no need? really thinking about picking one of these up to just leave in my camper.....does the trolling motor mount come with it?

Sorry for the late response- the strip is just 10 centimeters
You use a long or short shaft on this boat? 72 or 98 cm ?
It's a 40 lb thrust so it's a 36 inch shaft/ 92cm
@@ThePNW You think a 72 would be to short? Bc the thing is I ordered the same boat with a 72cm long one yesterday. If it’s to short I have to return it.
@@alaab2317 it'll work, but if you're in copy water the propeller may come out of the water. It's it a 30-lb thrust?
@@ThePNW you mean shallow water?
Its a 60 lbs. ETC-TEC azura 60
@@alaab2317 sorry- I meant choppy water. When your boat goes over a wave the back of the boat may go high and pull there motor out of the water. I wouldn't be too concerned with that though... That would probably rarely happen
What do you think about a 36 pound Newport vessel motor? Should that be fine for this? We plan on having 5-6 people on the boat at a time. Any help would be appreciated
That’s a lot of people… I would definitely get something a little more powerful. I have a 40-lb thrust and it’s great for two people
@@ThePNW so will 36 pound vs 40 pound really make that much of a difference? It’s practically the same. What would you recommend for 4-5 people
@@abreezy1st six people is probably 900 pounds (or so) so every little bit helps. If I were going to push 1000 pounds around (including batteries and motor) I’d get a 55lb thrust and two 100 amp/hour batteries..
Love your informative videos man. Fellow Oregonian here, quick question. I am building this same set up, almost ready for the maiden voyage, how water proof are those cables from the motor to the battery? Do I need to get any wire protection? Thanks
Thank you Carlos! I run my motor wires under the “driver’s” seat then feed it into the box through a hole I cut out. They may be made by the same people, but I've never had a problem with Minn Kota. How much was the motor and was it a c2 30
Im going fishing with my boat this weekend
Does the weight of the 30 pound or so battery on the soft bottom of this boat cause any types of problems?
Hello CJC, I used to wedge my 60-pound lead acid battery between the rear seat and the side. The battery would chafe the raft all day long and never caused any problems. If you’re using a lead acid battery I recommend putting it in a battery box. If the battery tips over the acid WILL put a hole in the raft!
@@ThePNW Thanks you so much. That is helpful.
Hi.
What size battery (amp hours) is needed for the motor? For example, I am looking at “Group 27 Deep Cycle Marine Gel Battery, 88 Amp Hours “or “Deep Cycle Flooded Marine Battery, 90 Amp Hours,” or “Deep Cycle Flooded Marine Gel, 75 Amp Hours” etc.

Do mounts usually come with motor's? I have a little inflatable and really want a motor to get around for some extra fun, also what's the usual range?
No.... You'd have to find a mount compatible with your raft. Does yours have a place for a motor mount?
When not using the battery (winter) do you have to put it at a specific voltage to not damage it? Like at 50% of its charge?
I store my lead acid battery at 100% and top them off on the charger once a month
@@ThePNW thanks! Have you used the motor on sea occasionally? I want to do that but the water is salty not sure if the motor can handle that if I do it few times a year
@@jetrg12 Minn Mota does make salt water motors, the ones I’ve seen are white. I would keep the fresh water motor out of the ocean…

Gregory Grimes I have a 12v 40lb thrust. I run them parallel so I don't run out of power...

Hello. Would I be good if I use a minn Kota motor that is 30 inches long ? It’s cheaper. Or do I need the 36 inches ?
valdser the 30" inch start is probably on a 30lb thrust motor. That's not strong enough for the Excursion 5. ruclips.net/video/Mc1rMzOi9_g/видео.html
The PNW I have an excursion 4, I think 30 lbs is recommended for that boat. Please. Let me know if you agree and if 30 length or 36 length. Thank you 🙏🏻
Dude I'm also in Oregon and was told that it needs to be registered. Did it change?
I haven't looked in awhile but I've never had a problem with that. I know in Washington they do not have to be registered...
The PNW Ok, thank you very much, so motor raised another notch or two and not lowered correct?
Ken Dungey take a look at 4:10 Motor Selection For The Intex Excursion - Minn Kota
That’s the angle adjustment I’m referring to... the motor should be submerged 6” (if I remember right).
What happens to the motor in shallow water?
Curious, what lake is this? I’m in the PNW also :).
It looks like Detroit Lake
It's a reservoir near Gifford Pinchot. If you're in Portland we've been launching from St John's bridge and going to Sauvie island, that's our latest vid

Nice boat bro
Nice setup, and get out on the water without spending a mint.
@@ThePNW thanks dude!
