    Beautiful!!
    I cried throughout this entire video.
    I got only 1 thing from my Grandmother before she died (almost 60 years ago), it was a Double Wedding Ring Quilt TOP.
    16 years ago I entrusted it to a "QUILTER".
    Long story short, she stole my quilt top!!!!

But forty years later I still have that beautiful quilt. It had pinks and blues in it. Simply gorgeous - and it was not machine quilted - she quilted the back and fronts together by hand!

    Oh my goodness! I bought a completely handmade double wedding ring quilt on a trip to Virginia about 25 years ago. It was all hand stitched /hand quilted by an older lady who made quilts for extra income for her family. I have cherished that quilt all these years, but now, I have an entirely new respect for all of her hard work. As a brand new quilter, I can admit that I will probably never attempt this - even on a machine. Donna, your work is fantastic! I would love to see more easy, beginner quilts in your videos. The Double Wedding Ring quilt is my favorite quilt pattern. My mother made several of these quilts. Her pattern was a little different than this one. I think the small peices was smaller and I thing there was 9 of them. The end peices where a 4 square. It would take my mother several years to make one because she would make other quilt and keep the little piece pattern in her box when the fabric was to small to cut the pieces to the quilt she was working on she cut the little wedding ring piece.
    When I was about 16 she was making me one. However my mother needed a cookstove, and a friend said she trade her a stove for the quilt but mom said no it was mine. I told her to trade it and she could make me another one. Longer story short she finally did trade it and started another quilt for me however my mother didn't get finished before she died a few years later. I always said I would make one but I haven't. Mom quilts was all hand stitch and hand quilted. She quilted each side on every seam.

    My sister tried to make a Double Wedding Ring quilt a number of years ago and ended up just tossing it in a bag without finishing it. She complained that the pattern was wrong because she could not get the pieces to match up and seeing this video, it is clear that she needed those little notches to help her get the perfect angle to match up the pieces. She passed away in 2013 before these wonderful templates were available. She used a paper pattern that she copied from a magazine. The shapes don’t really match up exactly as you sew them along the curve, they do angle somewhat so it all comes together at the end. This is an amazing teaching video. The tight close-up shots are so helpful in showing exactly what it should look like as you sew along. Amazing videography! And your commentary as you go along is so helpful and I love that yours is not totally perfect and you are ok with that. If yours is not totally perfect I will be happy with mine when it isn’t either. We are way too hard on ourselves, wanting everything to match up perfectly. You are such a great role model. Enjoy the process, rather than stress over it all. What a great way to approach it. Thank you so much for this. Will I make this......probably not yet. I’m not sure I can remain patient enough to work through it. I have a set of templates for the Drunkard’s Path and I think I will try that first to get ready. I’ll know more after I try that if I have the patience to do it. Happy Thanksgiving to your family and all of my quilting friends here on your site. Stay safe everyone!

      A piece of advice I was given by someone who won awards for her quilts. Always make a test block or two before cutting up a quilts worth of fabric because printed patterns, particularly newspapers, are not always accurate. This is do to the printers trying to make the pattern fit the space they have to use. I made that mistake with an apple core block from an old KCStar pattern before I remember what she said.

    • @kathyclayton4318
      @kathyclayton4318 4 года назад +8

      @@jjudy5869 yes, my sister said that was the very last pattern she was going to make from a magazine without making a sample ever again. She said every time she made one from a magazine she had to scramble around to make it work and that it never looks like the quilt in the picture. She said they hurry to get it done and don’t do a good job of editing until they get complaints. She said books are better because they go through a much more rigorous process before printing to make sure everything is correct. I could see from the way Donna manipulated those pieces that my sister had no way of knowing (since the pattern didn’t say or show pictures) how to angle those little pieces so you end up with that perfectly curved piece, plus she pieced the curve and did not have the template. I wonder if I looked around through her stuff if I could find it a salvage it for her. Oh well.

    I'm two years late to the party! Donna, your instructions are fantastic. I've been reluctant to make a Double Wedding Ring, but you definitely make it look easy. I recently purchased the templates and today I've cut 576 wedge A pieces and sorted them. I still need to purchase the background and accents but am confident as long as I follow your tutorial all will work out. Thanks for all your great videos!

    You really are a very good teacher. I started my DWR 15 years ago and got very discouraged. I believe I’ll pull it out of my project box and take another run at it. Your templates are MUCH nicer than what I had. Thanks for teaching us that it’s okay not to be “perfect” stitchers. Very real and very comfortable style.

So I have always drooled over the Wedding ring Quilts, but have never wanted to attempt them. Thanks for the tutorial. However, it didn't take me long watching you working the curves to get that idea right out of my head. I have to say that YOU ARE FEARLESS!! I must admit that I was quite fearful before starting! We had so many requests for this pattern, and I didn't think that I could show an easy way to stitch it, but I was wrong. I only stitched one practice curve to get the hang of it because the templates and slits make it so easy to stitch up!
