I like the idea of the "J zip" opening because it opens a bit wider than toploading but takes up less space than a full clamshell which can be great in confined spaces such as gym locker rooms, small hotel rooms etc. But I've never actually used one.
I own the Daybreakder 2 bag (in black nylon, non-XPAC material) and have found the "J zip" to be somewhat useful when I unharness the left shoulder strap, swing the bag in front of me (the remaining right shoulder strap holds the bag up), and now I can unzip the "J zip" along the lengthier side of the bag and reach right into the main cargo compartment. This ease of access reminds me of some of Peak Design's bag designs where it has a generous zipper into the main body compartment to quickly retrieve a camera after swinging the bag in front of your body.

Funny cause I daily this bag AND have the same water bottle. I like using it, but wish it was a hair bit bigger. Throw it in my suitcase as a “packable” bag so I don’t have to use a much heavier travel bag everyday. You definitely need to put your laptop etc in a sleeve (although I don’t for my iPad mini) I hate the silhouette of it with the bottle in the water bottle holder, without it in there I like the look. Xpac can be a little crinkly too. Not sure if you mentioned the little zipper pocket above the “laptop section.”
Would you consider more "packable" the cordura version or the xpac?. I am thinking about getting a daybreaker2 as a "packable" backpack for my coming trips. Cheers.
I have a 20L backpack which open as yours(but in S shape), lightweight as this one If you place the zippers in mid-way, you can top load or side load this pack. i stop using it because the zip had broken.
