It's been years since I used my Caldwell crono because a gascheck came off a lead bullet and went right through the front of it. But I remember I took the plastic top part off the skyscreen under certain light conditions. Never had a problem then. It's all moot now since I got a Garmin Zero. Happy New Year!
I have found that no matter what I do when the sun is out and at a lower angle, the readings are very sketchy if they read at all. Thankfully, my family got me a Garmin Zero for a gift! We are in the chips now!
Thank you for more great subjective info for a round, between it and 7x57 Mauser, will be my next rifle. Most likely 7-08, cause of action length, but am fascinated with the new powder preferences. Have not loaded anything new in 15yrs so appreciate this. All the best
Merry Christmas and I can appreciate you keeping the rifle secret and the reason why. Big 7 and it being a Tikka T3X which is a beloved rifle by many especially backcountry hunters and your successful history with other cartridges in the rifle made it even more of a conundrum on why it wasn’t as consistently good as most are use to.
Another great video. Purchased a 6 Creed rifle that came with a few Staball 6.5 loads shooting Sierra 95 Gr. TMK. Shot into .4” but I thought the Velo was pretty high. No pressure signs but checked Gordon’s Reloading Tool and their velo and my Garmin velo matched up. EXCEPT, GRT had pressures over 66,500psi. Now I am nervous Staball “may” be over pressure without signs. I elected to back off from that load to about 58k and they still shoot.
FYI in my new Tikka 7RemMag, I got a doe today with factory 165 grain Norma Bondstrike. Garmin speed is only 2737. I can take a deer daily and so far I'm testing all the new Tikkas this week all with factory Norma Bondstrike ammo except the 270. That is shooting factory Hornady ELDX at 2850. The 270 and new 30-06 go out tomorrow. Wish I my Tikka 708 was finished but likely not going to be ready before end of season
@@josephmanion4636 I got a Tikka Compact 708 last year and was amazed at how well the factory Norma 150 grain Whitetail shot in it. Speed was horrid (2500s) in the short barrel but once I figured out the drop (20" at 300 yards with a 100 yard zero), I was lobbing the lead at deer and it was DRT. I shot 3 does 3 days in a row, feeding in the exact same spot between 725 and 730am at exactly 300 yards. All bullets passed through and all 3 dropped with heart shots. One of my local stores has 5 boxes left on sale at $26/box. If it's still there next time I can make it I'm buying all 5.
Great idea Mike on not telling us the rifle or scope! One thing I'm curious about is barrel twist rate tho and that might be helpful to loaders such as us. Can't wait to see results in the medium weight range as that's where the 7-08 i think really shines! Merry Christmas to you and the family!
Thank you! According to the manufacturer the twist rate in this rifle is 1:9. When I look back on all the data and outcomes so far, this rifle is struggling with 160s and up. I doubt that is the twist rate, but another variable. So far, this project is bringing back VIVID memories from Project 270 a while back - on that project RL26 initially blew my mind and looked like a no brainer, but turned out to be problematic. I am thinking Staball 6.5 is the same here - looked great initially but now I am not so sure.......
Go lighter! I know you want to stay with the heavy class, but give a 150 nosler ablr a try. That cartridge should push that bullet with plenty of speed and they're a great hunting bullet. Just my .02
I am with you. I am starting to wonder/worry this rifle may not like the 160s and up. I'm going to switch brass and powder and give the heavies one more try. But I am excited to get into the 140s and 150s and I have several different bullets coming in the mail!
120 to 150gr. class bullets are gonna be your huckleberry in the 7mm-08. If you wanna push those heavies move to a bigger case cartridge! But, of course you know that so I guess you're just having fun.
@@terryhenry8243 LOL! I won't give up the heavies for now! But I am excited to get to the 140s and 120s. I have a bunch of different bullets coming and should be here next week!
@huntsimple9527 hahaha! BTW, you're getting obscene velocities with those heavies! No published data would support those numbers, even at max. Better check that chrono out. I had one of the same that consistently read about 100fps too fast. Don't blow yourself up! Your vids are great. I wanna continue to see that pretty face!
@@terryhenry8243 LOL! I think these velocities are probably true with 6.5 Staball. I have a friend who is breaking 3000 with 140s with the Staball. I have a brand new chrono as of yesterday! Gonna be great!
Merry Christmas! Thanks for the video

Thank you. I think this project is going to continue to be really insightful into the 7mm-08.

The Norma Bondstrike and Ecostrike are both interesting to me. I am a huge fan of anything Norma, as I have yet to have an inferior product from them.
My son uses 150 gr Norma whitetail in his Browning 7-08 with great results. Every deer leaves good blood & none have gone more than 50 yards.
@@josephmanion4636 Cannot argue with that performance!

I agree. If you do dismiss it's use on heavier bullets please try it on mediums. I will be trying it soon in mine so I'm curious of the outcome
BTW...i have a 1:9.5
Unless it already is😅

Merry Christmas ol buddy and happy New Years but Vargit should be good for the 175
I have some Varget on hand!
@huntsimple9527 good I knew I spelled it wrong lol
Do you aneal your brass?
I don't.
@huntsimple9527 Ok, how many firing times do you usually get out of non annealed brass?
@@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill I have found it really depends on so many variables and is so different for each cartridge, rifle, brass type/brand, etc.
