Thank you so much for sharing your tactics and not hiding them like other fursuit makers, I find it very admirable that you do so. Keep up the great work!!
Oh my goodness, I'm so tired of fursuit makers closely guarding their secrets. It's fine if they want to put a price on it, like Etsy patterns or patreon content, but some makers NEVER telling how they do something? Annoying. This fandom is trying to keep learning better ways to make these things! We all need to support each other! You know? lol. Ooh, I'm literally about to make a caribou partial in June-ish!!! I would love to film the whole process for you! If it's the entire partial being made idk if I wanna completely detail it like a full tutorial, since that would be a very long video, and I already have these base guides uploaded already... but it would be fun to show an uncommon species suit be made from the ground up.
Haha thank you!!! I havent seen many people do it like this either... I'm glad I found a good way that works for myself! And maybe it'll help a few others too :3
really helpful thank you, its interesting to see it done digitally but also glad you included a paper version as well since not everyone has access to a drawing tablet. great work
Oh totally! Anything I draw digitally you can easily just be drawing on a piece of paper. I just like doing digital since I can edit the shapes and lines a little easier, but I used to do my art traditional all the time as a kid, using multiple pieces of paper for different layers lol!
OH This tutorial is great, it makes me want to start on my next suit immediately to try this out! It was super easy to understand which I'm incredibly thankful for. For my first two heads I just went straight from the balaclava rather than making a bucket head first (so I could have moving jaws) but this seems applicable to that too so I can't wait to try this on my next project.
so glad it's helpful and easy to understand!!!! I try to make sure to explain as much as i can. and this technique should totally be able to be done with a balaclava base / no bucket underneath!! good luck!!!

Extremely useful video. I'm trying to design my own headbase and can't at all figure out what shapes to cut the foam into, let alone place them so that they form one smooth form together. Besides this art program, what would be the second best way to go about designing the foam pieces?
glad this will help!!! so you could do this in literally ANY drawing program that has layers (fire alpaca is free!) or you could do it traditionally on paper too! just get a ruler, measure how tall your bucket is (without the cross pieces) then draw that line on paper, then sketch the head on that! to make different paper layers for the cheeks/etc just put one on top and trace your original drawing :3
@@freckledcatcreations Thank you for responding! That seems pretty straightforward. I was going to use a balaclava head base with elastic sewn in so it could have a moving jaw. Though, this is my first attempt at making a head ever so I might be shooting too high. What are your opinions/suggestions regarding balaclava bases in general?
@@thebedroomshow9010 ooh, I have ALWAYS wanted to try a balaclava only build - just gluiing the face straight onto that. definitley the way to go for a moving jaw, youre right. you'd need it tight. It's ... up to you, it is infamously hard to get foam moving jaws to work correctly, and if this is your first suit, your brain is already going to be VERY busy/using most brain cells just learning how to put the base fursuit head together, so its possible that also adding in the difficult task of getting elastic to move the jaw is gonna be too much for you. it's up to you in the end, but if you go for it, dont get discouraged if it doesnt work out / you lose motivation halfway through! if you want / NEED this to be a win, i would make it as easy as possible. then once youve got the hang of making bases you can add some more complexity to it (i.e. moving jaw element)

That is an amazing approach. I should try it too, maybe I can do better blyths reed warbler. The bird itself is so small lol. Thank you for amazing tips!
You're very welcome!! Hope it helps you! You can check out the older video i made about putting the foam together, or if you wait a bit i'll be redoing the tutorial hopefully soon.
@@moonrin_arts omg thank you so much for checking it all out!! X3 Good luck on your bases!!!!!! I feel like the way I do it helps me get a symmetrical base way easier. And helps incorporate my drawing art style into my heads :D
@@freckledcatcreations with your way it is easy to get the desired result as in the art! Because it's also easier for me to draw first to understand how it will look, but I didn't know how to do it to turn it into a base. Thank you!!
I don't quite know how you put the pieces together at the end maybe you could explain a little more.👍 Also I have to draw it on paper and don't really know how to measure for front and side view to know how big to draw it. Thanks for this video it helps a lot💞💕👍
I have already uploaded a video to show how the pieces come together on the head, have you checked it out? And remember where I showed the pic of holding the ruler next to the bucket head? That's how to measure for front and side view. You just draw it how big the bucket head is.
Aw thanks so much! For drawing I use Paint Tool SAI (it's $40 or so), but you can just as easily use FireAlpaca or Krita (both are free!) or even photoshop/clip studio paint/etc. And to record, I use OBS ! it's free too!
Your tutorials rock but I have a quick question, how were you able to get accurate measurements for your shapes at the end (like the paper you showed for the goat example)
I love the tutorials you have here, I finally have another channel to feast for tutorials! I do however wonder how do you go from the digital drawing perfectly to paper? I cant draw this on my screen lol.
Do you think we can see a video of you putting this bear head together? It would be really helpful to see how it comes together 😄 and thank you so much for making these vids they are very helpful
Did you want the bear specifically? I've already done about half of the foam work on the head on this one XD If you want to see another base I've done, i've done a video on the foam carving already!
Do you need to know how to draw to plan for and make fursuits? Because I want to make my first suit now and seeing this made me wonder since I don't know how to draw.
You don't necessarily need to know how to draw! You could get someone else to draw the shapes for you, or you could just eyeball it. But getting the face shapes down to a certain shape is a bit like drawing, so it might help to have some idea of how to shape the species youre making!
@@freckledcatcreations Ah, thank you! I've been wanting to for a little while now to go alongside my premade partial a friend gave me. Funnily enough, your video on how to make a ferret tail is what inspired me to make the first suit I make a ferret suit, since I absolutely adore ferrets.
I've been looking for something like this! I've been working on a template for a fursuit head of a species I haven't seen any suits of and maybe this will help me improve the one I have before I try to make the actual head 👀
So I'm about to make my boyo, a sergal, and I can't seem to find tutorials anywhere! I've never done a sergal before, and this is my first fursuit too. I understand that sergals aren't very popular species, but I'm sure it would help a lot of people to see one made :)
@@glxssgxtz Haha no problem! I dont always watch entire videos either. If I ever get a sergal commission i'll maybe record it! But basically i have to wait for someone to commission one. I dont have time to make premade projects in between my commissions XD
Okay, thank you so much! I'm in love with your projects, they're awesome. I'm actually going to make my first one today, and King is going to be beautiful. Any suggestions?
As I showed in the video, I see how big the bucket head is, and make sure the patterns look the right size! You can eyeball it or measure it with a ruler or hold the bucket head up to the screen to check. 1:56
Freckled Cat Creations thank you! I’m making a bird species that doesn’t have that many suits on it, the suits that do exists of it don’t look too well so I basically have to make my own design
How much you blow it up by depends on how big you drew it! What I do is measure on my screen how big the image is, and then see how tall my bucket head is. If the bucket head is 7" tall and my drawing's bucket head is 4" tall, then I make the image larger to match 7".
The problem for me here, is I’m making mine after a Bearded dragon, they are basically just a triangle head shape, so putting detail is a struggle for me. I’ve made the base, thanks to you. but next up, is this. So making it symmetrical, and just looking right will be hard. Wish me luck!
Yeah, I print it / trace it off of my computer screen at life size! Basically I measured the length of the bucket head (top to bottom) and made sure it was the same length on the drawing!
I know this video is sort of old so I don’t expect an answer, but if you can answer please do!! How did you know how big to print the pattern? It doesn’t look like it would fit on a single piece of paper.
I know you made a video talking about how to draft your own handpaw pattern but is your 5 finger puffy paw pattern available anywhere? Love your work by the way
Thank you so much!! I don't want to sell my patterns to people yet, I like having my own hand style that doesnt look like anyone elses. But you should be able to make your own the way you like it by using the guide!! Good luck!!
Question though, how do you make the patterns to scale with the head? If you drew this on your computer and printed it out how do you make the print to scale? That's the problem I'm struggling with
Your work is amazing I’m thinking about trying to make my very first fursuite head but I’m worried about spending a lot of money only to botch the entire thing
Thank you so much! It's a huge jump, i understand bein worried about it! I had the same worry. Maybe you could start with making something smaller from foam, like a simple plush shape, just to start getting the idea of how to carve foam + tape it + sew the fur for it? Without having to jump immediately into a full head.
Maybe I'm blind, but I didn't see a tutorial on how to print off the pattern or get it on paper. I'd just put it on a TV but I don't have mine until December... Do you have a tutorial on how to get the pattern from on a computer to paper?
You make an account on twitter or instagram or tumblr or amino, and post your stuff! and then people will comment and ask for a commission. If you're wanting a website to show your prices, I use Weebly, it's free. i think squarespace and wix are free too. make sure you also draft a Terms of Service so you have protection if anyone tries to scam you!
You'll probably see a lot of comments from me. I'm studying fursuit making for my main suit - but I do have a question. What art program do you use? And could I by chance use IbisPaint X for this?
Freckled Cat Creations no problem I have recently finished making my first ever fursuit head ( I really thought it would be easy) well jokes on me it was really hard sewing and making pieces to measurement and carving the foam I respect the work and hours you put into your fursuit creations ❤️❤️
Freckled Cat Creations it turned out okay for my first fursuit (head & tail) I cut some of the fur to wide so it has little bumps/creases in it :v lol it’s looks hilarious. I felt like a slug after I made it, I just wanted to sleep 💤 XD

@@thebedroomshow9010 Sounds like a plan!! I'm so excited for your journey, good luck!!!!! :D
OMIGOD THIS IS SO HELPFULLL!!!!!
That is an amazing approach. I should try it too, maybe I can do better blyths reed warbler. The bird itself is so small lol. Thank you for amazing tips!
Ohh that sounds great, you should!!! Good luck!!!!
I know this tutorial is 2 years old now but I thought I'd ask,how do you make sure you got the right size for the pattern when printing it?
no worries, i love checking comments on old videos!! you should check my other videos, i have already posted a tutorial on how to print 100% scale ;)
@@freckledcatcreations Thanks! I actually realized that a bit later after posting the comment lmao XD still I do appreciate you answered anyways!
Thank you so much for this tutorial!!
You're very welcome!! Hope it helps you! You can check out the older video i made about putting the foam together, or if you wait a bit i'll be redoing the tutorial hopefully soon.
@@freckledcatcreations I can't wait to try to make my base that way! And yes, I've seen almost all the videos on your channel already haha
@@freckledcatcreations Ok thanks I will go check out the other video I am new to your channel
@@beanfluffcreations6269 No problem! It's linked in this video description.
Thank you so much this really helped me design a pattern
Glad it helped!
Awsome tut! But how did you get it so life size? Is there certain things I need for that?
i actually have a tutorial on printing full scale! I trace it from my screen but I show you how to print full scale on a printer. just using ms paint
This tutorial is soo helpful, I was wondering what program are you using? It seems to work well.
I actually have a tutorial posted near the same time as this for printing 100% scale! :3
I love the tutorials you have here, I finally have another channel to feast for tutorials! I do however wonder how do you go from the digital drawing perfectly to paper? I cant draw this on my screen lol.
oh, check out my tutorial on mockups! i share how to do the resizing in paint, and printing it the right size. should help.
@@freckledcatcreations oh it's ok if you've already done it lol. Also what program did you use for the drawing part?
@@Mattea_Lau I draw in Paint Tool SAI; it's maybe $45? but free art programs like Krita and FireAlpaca also work great!
Ahh I hope this helps you!!!!! good luck!
@@freckledcatcreations Thank you! I'm going to need the luck lol
So I'm about to make my boyo, a sergal, and I can't seem to find tutorials anywhere! I've never done a sergal before, and this is my first fursuit too. I understand that sergals aren't very popular species, but I'm sure it would help a lot of people to see one made :)
Oop- sorry didn't see the ending words!
When you transfer the drawing onto paper how big do you make it so you can use them as guides to trace them?
As I showed in the video, I see how big the bucket head is, and make sure the patterns look the right size! You can eyeball it or measure it with a ruler or hold the bucket head up to the screen to check. 1:56
Freckled Cat Creations thank you! I’m making a bird species that doesn’t have that many suits on it, the suits that do exists of it don’t look too well so I basically have to make my own design
How do I get it the correct size if my computer screen isn’t big enough?
I go over how to print out things in my Mockups video, go watch it!
it will help me a lot, thank you very much.
You are welcome!
To print it out, do you have to make the size of the image bigger?
If so then how much?
How much you blow it up by depends on how big you drew it! What I do is measure on my screen how big the image is, and then see how tall my bucket head is. If the bucket head is 7" tall and my drawing's bucket head is 4" tall, then I make the image larger to match 7".
@@freckledcatcreations oh ok thank you so much!!
What about scaling the digital one for printing? Especially if I have to divide it up into pieces because I can only print on letter sized paper
I've got a tutorial about that too! ;)
Have you ever considered selling PDFs of these patterns? I would certainly buy!
I considered, but I m not sure if I have time to draw up extra fursuit mockups for people - I barely have time to draw them for my customers XD
@@freckledcatcreations That’s totally understandable! ^-^
The problem for me here, is I’m making mine after a Bearded dragon, they are basically just a triangle head shape, so putting detail is a struggle for me. I’ve made the base, thanks to you. but next up, is this. So making it symmetrical, and just looking right will be hard. Wish me luck!
Do you print this life size for the head or do you print it out and draw the shape by hand from a smaller template?
Yeah, I print it / trace it off of my computer screen at life size! Basically I measured the length of the bucket head (top to bottom) and made sure it was the same length on the drawing!
I know this video is sort of old so I don’t expect an answer, but if you can answer please do!! How did you know how big to print the pattern? It doesn’t look like it would fit on a single piece of paper.
I actually have a video already on how to print 100% to scale!
Good luck!!
Freckled Cat Creations alright! I totally understand :) I’ll try using the video and make some of my own. I’m sure it won’t be that hard
Freckled Cat Creations do you think you are ever going to sell the pattern?
Question though, how do you make the patterns to scale with the head? If you drew this on your computer and printed it out how do you make the print to scale? That's the problem I'm struggling with
of course! you should scroll thru my videos and find the one called "How to Print 100% Scale"
What software do you use to do this?😮
I use paint tool sai to draw!
Freckled Cat Creations that sounds like a great idea I might try that
you draw is so cute ^^♡
Thanks!!!
@@freckledcatcreations ♡♡♡

You're welcome!! Hope it helps you!!!!
Maybe I'm blind, but I didn't see a tutorial on how to print off the pattern or get it on paper. I'd just put it on a TV but I don't have mine until December... Do you have a tutorial on how to get the pattern from on a computer to paper?
I put a card in the video and put a link in the description!
@@freckledcatcreations Thanks!
does this work the same if you arent gonna do a buckethead?
I don't know actually! I have never not done a bucket head so I can't advise you!
Hello! I need your help
So I want to open for fursuit commisions, but I dont know how. Could you tell me what site you use to take commisions?
You make an account on twitter or instagram or tumblr or amino, and post your stuff! and then people will comment and ask for a commission. If you're wanting a website to show your prices, I use Weebly, it's free. i think squarespace and wix are free too. make sure you also draft a Terms of Service so you have protection if anyone tries to scam you!
what's the editing program you're using (to draw)
i use Paint Tool SAI !
how do you make sure you get the scale right when doing the pattern irl?
check the 1:56 mark please! i have told you already!
@@freckledcatcreations crap yes im so sorry! it was super late and i just completly missed that for some reason? thank you so much :)
When you draw it digitally, how do you go about printing it out?
Or do you not print it out lol

@@freckledcatcreations ooooohhhhh yeah sorry lol, thank you though ^-^
You'll probably see a lot of comments from me. I'm studying fursuit making for my main suit - but I do have a question.
What art program do you use? And could I by chance use IbisPaint X for this?
I use Paint Tool SAI, and I assume you could use many drawing programs for this! you mostly just need the ability to draw on multiple layers.
What app do you use to draw this out? (Of course I am talking computer wise)
oh! i use paint tool sai!
@@freckledcatcreations Thanks!
