Check out their live version from 2006 in Denmark with the Danish National Orchestra. A brilliant performance. Gary's voice just got better and better with age.
As much as I loved this song from the live album back in 1972, I'm thinking it's even more meaningful to me now, more than 50 years later. Great vocals and instrumentation. I would urge anyone to watch this entire episode from London. It was magnificent.
Oh, marvelous!😊 I had this on 45 originally. I played it and the flip side, 'Salty Dog' so much the 45 gave up the ghost so I bought th LP. It's great to hear this again.
I still have my 45 of this song, and I ended up really loving A Salty Dog even more and eventually figured out how to play it on piano when I was about 12 in 1972. Cheers!
I always loved this song when it played on the radio back in 1973 and 1974 during the summer while we were out on our boat in the San Juan Islands here in Washington State.
memories like that almost have a flavor for me, hence 'flavor memories' ~indescribable One for me is ~'72 hearing 'Saturday in the Park' at the pool, bright sunny day
@rosskstar Oh yes. Another Classic song that meant it was summertime. Those were good times my friend. You definitely don't feel that when you hear Regular radio play these days. I only listen to the classic rock radio channel here in seattle. (KZOK)
I was at vintage record store a couple of years ago when I saw a whippersnapper who was about 20 holding an A Salty Dog album. I said to him "buy it; you can thank me later." He did. I was proud to give him advice on good music.
❤❤❤ simply beautiful and amazing song one 🕐 of My All time favorite,s RIP 🙏💜❤️💜 Gary it makes me feel good and cry too 🌹🌹 will never have another song like this ever again 😢😢😢
I live near the city of Edmonton, Alberta, in Canada. This song used to be played A LOT by the local rock stations. And when I say it was played a lot, I mean I heard it so often I went to Wikipedia to find out what the deal with this song was. That was how I learned this song was recorded with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra! The city I was born in helped make one of Procul Harum's most popular songs, and I didn't even know, it blew my mind. Sadly, this ended either a decade or half a decade ago. Now I NEVER hear Conquistador on the radio, and I assume it's because the radio stations were all bought out and have their playlists dictated by someone from Toronto or NYC. It sucks, please bring this song back to local radio.
This show was so far ahead of its time with regards to audio mixing for broadcast. Burt Sugarmann had an incredible crew. You should listen to his interview with Bob Lefzets
In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra".
En la Filbo Bogota, esta semana estaba en la venta su Lp. Caratula con la orquestacion ubicada y dispuesta a ejecutar. Stand venta de libros y Lp usados.
You can see that Gary Brooker was proud of his music, and he took care to make sure it came out right. When I see him here, it reminds me of Paul McCartney on piano playing Hey Jude.
It came from an old Tv Show that had great music. I agree with you the director of this performance missed the mark by a thousand miles. When this show first appeared I don't think they had a real budget to work with. Probably only had 2 tv cameras. Very limited. It did get better when Burt Sugarman started producing it a few years latter. At least we did get very good audio for a show the executives thought would be a failure. Started on NBC in the 70' s
@@larryfried7742 I remember The Midnight Special quite well (I'm 59). That and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert were must see TV back in the day. It's just they've got this dynamic drummer in BJ Wilson really doing his thing and not one camera on him?
I'm suspicious of whether the drums were live or not. In the opening wide shot, you can clearly see that the drummer is not playing what you are hearing. I suspect that the drummer is miming/playing as quietly as possible. We've seen a number of MS performers where some or all of the instruments are playbacks with only lead vocals being live.
It's quite obvious this was performed live and not lip-synced. He repeats one of the verses in place of the usual one. He opens with "Conquistador your stallion stands / In need of company / And like some angel's haloed brow / you reek of purity" then later "Conquistador a vulture sits / upon your silver shield / and in your rusty scabbard now / the sand has taken seed." for the last stanza, he repeats " you reek of purity" Back then, musicians actually played their performances, and occasionally, even a professional can still occasionally get it wrong. Amazing performance in any case.
I loved this back in the early 70s, but the musicianship and recording quality here are quite poor. You'll do much better to listen to the version 30 years later. Incredible! ruclips.net/video/t-zti_qAHsA/видео.htmlsi=C92hFG0kb4AtTH6V
Yes, we're all aware of that. The Brits often pronounce words incorrectly (most of them say "tay-co" instead of "tah-co"). They do it, we Yanks do it, that's just the way it is.
It is true that language usage and pronunciation differ according to region. For instance, where I come from, we usually say, "His pronunciation," not "He's pronunciation."
Best song ever! Who's listening in 2024? I'm 66yrs old and heard this song 🎵 way back when rock n roll was at it's peak..
52 here
I'm 71 and still love it ! But for some strange reason , I always think of " Cisco Kid ' by War
I m 67
@@thebeatlesable Ha ! Just a youngster !"
57 and reminiscing on my childhood with my daddy playing these albums. Bittersweet memories!
The great Gary Brooker. What a voice!
Such a sad but kick-ass song! Procol Harum was phenomenal! 😎💜

Brookers voice never changed in his career! Astonishing!
I love the way procol used the piano and the organ at the same time!
Yes, powerful, like no other band, a sound of their own, classic!
It's such a treat to hear this song from yesteryear!!! Takes me back to when I was a kid...though I hope for...! 🤙💯
The drumming there was phenomenal 😎☝️
The great Barrie James Wilson
Another classic song from one of the best British bands Procol Harum,RIP Gary and Keith your music is your legacy

Cracking version of one of their best songs. PH were a real band, everything about them shone with the sort of class they display here in shedloads.
When music was truly art and humanity.
Deep lyrics and an incredibly passionate and honest performance with no spectacle.
Superb music, at 73 I realise I have had a life filled with some amazing music.
Another highly underrated band. Incredible!
Good music is good 🎵😊!
Beautiful song
Such a great band !!! Loved all their music!!!!!! Thanks for posting this up for us !!!!
What a voice, what a band!
Wow! Right out of my AM memories!
B.J. Wilson was a criminally underrated drummer. The guy was right up there with any drummer of his time.
Fabulous Song,
Makes me feel as if I’m floating high up in the clouds …. ⛅️ soaring ….
EPIC 😎

For decades I thought PH was Canadian because of that album
"you reek of purity" So good!
Seen Robin trower around that Time. 65 yrs old.

BRAVO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤

Sorry to see you go Gary.
Whew super talent
You can see that Gary Brooker was proud of his music, and he took care to make sure it came out right. When I see him here, it reminds me of Paul McCartney on piano playing Hey Jude.
I read that the original recording was done on one take with the full orchestra!
Holy crap! Insane level of musicianship
I actually like this song better than whiter shade of pale
You got that right...this was an awesome song!
Don’t tell any one!
Nice burst
Who filmed this? BJ Wilson was drumming his heart out and there wasn't one single shot of him.

Yes the drummer has to die or almost die(BRich-Dominican Republic solo, Bonham, Moon, Peart) to get any notoriety !
