  • My super controversial Easiest Beginner iPad Procreate Portrait Tutorial had a huge debate about the perks and cons of tracing in the comments section. In this follow-up tutorial, we'll be taking a look at how to cheat even further with the latest technology. Be warned, almost close to zero artistic skills will be imparted in this radical non-tutorial. As usual, have fun debating about the process in the comments down below.

I think so too. I can’t imagine years down the road when all these are legit tools for artists.

Can you make a video on where to put hard lines in a painting? I usually put a lot of soft lines and blending but then my painting looks blurry and I dunno where to put hard lines.

Even if you are not sketching by hand, this method is still a great way to practice using the tools in Procreate such as color picking, blending, etc and also to see how light and shadow can change colors and the perception of depth in a photo or artwork. The more you repeat this process, the faster you will be at noticing what contributes to a good picture and how to add those elements by yourself when you start advancing in your skills.

Learning isn't cheating. It's only cheating if you try to pass it off as your own. This is a really good way to learn.

To me when it comes to art the only way you cab cheat is if you’re outright stealing someone else’s artwork and claiming it as your own. You can argue tracing isn’t quite as skillful of a way to creat art as other methods but cheating, I don’t think so.

I don’t usually trace. But I do my best to sketch the person I’m drawing freehand then I put the photo in to check my proportions. I’m getting better because I usually don’t have to adjust much. I also think it’s okay to pick colors from the photo. I try not to rely on it but sometimes I get stuck. Sometimes what I pick from the photo doesn’t work or look right so I’m on my own.
Tracing is fine for learning. I don’t know if it is ethical to sell something traced completely. I don’t why people get so worked up about tracing though because it does help you learn and retain muscle memory. And your tutorials are about learning.
