- In this video we're going to teach you everything about casting a baitcaster. How exactly do you cast these intimidating reels called casting reels. Baitcasting reels are used for a variety of fishing techniques so it's really important as you advance in your fishing career to learn exactly how to cast these awesome setups. If you fish bass lakes with heavy cover, cast spoons for steelhead, finesse fish the edges of lily pads, and so many more fishing techniques we could talk about... you NEED to consider learning how to use a baitcasting setup because it will help you catch more fish! Apply firm pressure on the spool with your thumb as you start your cast to help prevent the spool from backlashing, and then gradually back off on the pressure to feather your line out during the remainder of the cast. Watch this video from Jordan of Addicted Fishing as he explains the rest of the info you need to know to become a pro at casting a baitcaster.

Learn how to put line on a baitcaster properly here: ruclips.net/video/bSOTKq7HWwQ/видео.html
I will
I remember learning back in the day. I was using an old Penn 209 fly lining a live anchovy on a mustard #2 bait hook with 40# mono for yellowtail....take that challenge....lol
Dude this was awesome. Some how when ever a question pops into my head I get a notification for your guy's videos and it answeres my question. May I make Suggestion, you guys should do (pick a fan to go on a fishing trip) with you guys and make videos of you guys and a fan slaying fish all day. We love the videos dont get me wrong, but you guys are cool. 😎👍
No joke Addicted I just had a dream where I was fishing in Alaska for trout, and the whole time your voice was ringing in my head telling me what to do, and I caught a 5 pound cutty! lol
I just don't get it......😒
No offense to the other guys but I’m really glad Jordan is showing me lol
Finally, this is something we all need.
Awesome video!!!👍👍
I just started a new job at one of the larger fishing supply stores. I meet customers everyday who want to get started fishing, but are worried about what they don't know. I give them each as much time as possible but I feel many times I fall short of giving them what they need. I have taken to pointing them to the Addicted RUclips. Not one of the Addicted guys is a weak instructor and all of the tutorials are so thorough. Thanks, for these and keep 'em coming!
My baitcaster came from the factory with a awesome bird’s nest mode 😂
😂
We must shop at the same place
yuo guys are all awesome i have been learning lot i have only been fishing a couple years thanks
Man, it’s like you guys can read my mind. I just bought my first baitcaster about a week ago and then y’all came out with the spooling video! Now I’m out learning to properly cast and work my baitcaster and y’all come out with this video! Truly appreciate y’all and your channel!
This vid put together little details in a way other “baitcaster how to” videos haven’t!
Also gives advice on how to actually practice casting a baitcaster. Thanks for making this vid!
Could y’all make a beginner’s guide for getting started with fly fishing for trout? I’m addicted to your videos
There's much better channels for that. These guys are awesome for spinning and baitcasting videos. The best channel I have found for fly fishing beginners is Mad River fishing RUclips channel
Please!! Good idea!
I watched a bunch of how to cast...You are the first one to show your thumb stopping.. Thanks.
So I realize this video is old but I just wamted to say thanks for explaining. I dont comprehend things well unless I am explained what each component is doing mechanically. I need to be able to visualize the action from the mechanics of the reel and through my arm. You've explained the how and why better than every other video I've watched. It genuinely helps and I appreciate your thoughtful and methodical approach. Much better than all of the "well you turn this thingy and then you put your thumb on it" videos.
Hell yeah. I searched up how to use a baitcaster in hopes to find one of your videos. I scrolled and almost lost hope but I found you!! Thanks for the all tips.
When I learned how to use a baitcaster I put a paper plate at the other end of my yard and practiced for a week until I could hit the plate fairly consistently. It helped a lot with back lashes and not sending it into the trees.
I was having soooooooo much trouble casting a bait caster for sooooo long!!! THANKS SOOOOO MUCH!
I'm new to bait casting. I've seen a bunch of videos from on how to cast. You are the only one who said that "one" thing I needed to help me cast. I thought you hit the brake during the cast. You released the brake, held the line spool with the thumb then released the line during the cast. Wow. A simple thanks isn't enough. I appreciate you.
I just went through half my spool of new line trying to learn! Going to stick with it and try again! Thanks for the video!
I'm new to the baitcaster world and not going to lie before this video, it was kicking my butt. So thanks for the tips.
THANK YOU!!!! I’ve tried baitcasters before and I could never get it right, so I gave up went back to spinning. Now that I’ve watched this tutorial, I’ll give it another go 🤗🤗
Thanks 👍 😊 I am a 65 year old carpenter and just learning how to use a casting reel my son gave me for my birthday.
Best video I've seen so far.
My our Lord Jesus bless you, family and the work you do.🙏
Never forget to pay it forward and please never pass up or look down on the homeless. Much brotherly love ❤️ only Jesus
This video helped me so much with casting a baitcaster great video cheers
The instruction was well presented with enough detail. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for this, my first baitcaster rod and reel arrived yesterday. Hello from Scotland 🏴 BTW great videos, Keep them coming❤️❤️👍👍❤️❤️
I loved this video I’ve been wanting to get a bait caster for some time now, but haven’t because I couldn’t figure out how to use one whenever I was using one. I’m totally going to get one now.
I just bought a baitcaster I'm trying to get all the tips I can before I head out great tips thank you
Hi I am learning this new technique of casting..The break and stopping with your thumb is tricky and the feeling in with left handed..thanks for some pointers I sent to a friend this video too
Why don't people know the difference between break and brake??????????????????
Bro, I just started fishing this year, and I may actually be the worlds WORST fisherman.. that being said, I absolutely love these videos, and I like to think it’s your fault for my bad luck. Lol jk. As always, coming in clutch with the bait caster video. Every step of my fishing journey has been guided by you guys. I just got a bait caster, and didn’t even realize that wagon wheel was drag. Thanks again for the informative video. This answered a lot of questions I had.
nice, literally just got a baitcaster today. good timing!
Came across an awesome deal on a Lew's BB1HZ yesterday. $50 and it looks pretty much new aside from the dust it collected. My first baitcaster and I'm super stoked to get it out on the river. I've already decided it's gonna be used soley for my rapala and other jerk bait lures.
BTW, my girls love your videos, especially your versus videos. I've got twins so, when we're out on the water they like to compete and see who can cast farther or catch something first.
Appreciate you guys!!! 🤙
What I love about your channel is how all the tutorials are so educational. Thanks for all the content!
You are the best instructor. Just got my first baitcaster. Going to go out this even for some salmon on the Manistee. Hopefully I catch some fish. I know your vid will help prevent me from looking too much like a noob tonight lol
Great video! I just got my first bait caster for fishing fall run here in the Wisconsin/Lake Michigan fishery, and I’ve never used one before. Once again, Addicted Fishing to the rescue! Hopefully I’ll hook into some salmon this fall with it. Keep up the how-tos, even though I’ve been fishing 35 years, y’all still taught me some new tricks.
Great video. Fantastic explanation and clear instruction! Thanks
Another tip is to never fling the rod as hard as you can you are asking for massive backlash if you do. Let the rod give you the distance.
Got a good deal on a bait caster, relatively new to fishing and want to make sure I can hopefully have a good time with it
Great job teaching us Jordan!!!!
Finally, someone who explains it properly! Definitely needed this, you should make one for float fishing! Subbed
I think he did
Been out testing for the first time today. Been casting sideways 😅 great video 🙏
This is what I needed to go have fun. Thanks man.
Great video!!! I watch every video. even if it's something I already know how to do.
Finally a tutorial that works!!! Thank you!
I was looking at baitcasters on Amazon and I saw the funniest review of one. A guy was standing their in a picture with a bird's nest pointing at it all mad with a one start review saying it happened first cast and he was very angry lmao🤣🤣🤣. I got my first baitcaster today and watched a bunch of videos before even trying it, then I tied on some weights and practiced in my driveway to get it down.
Best tutorial I've seen, I might just buy a baitcaister just to try it
Update I own 2 baitcaster combos and I love it, glad I made the switch.
That 45 rule is cool. Didn't know that, thanks for the tip
Very good lesson for me as a beginner thanks much!
Really like these 101 series! Thanks, brother!
The whole team deserves a pizza party but Jordan has really inspired me to try different methods and representations. Thanks buddies
I need to learn ASAP I just bought a used one cuz I’m broke and backlash every darn time I try to cast further
Great video!!! Just starting to learn with a baitcaster. This will make a ton of difference now!
I’ve been getting back into fishing and found your guys channel. You guys are awesome! Helpful tips and fantastic videos! Time for me to get a baitcaster soon!
I'll be ready to Baitcast for the Winter Run
Great video brother!! I just got my first baitcaser today... Your video was very detailed... Got a new sub!!!
Very well explained.. Big Thanks
Great tutorial Jordan and thanks! I noticed that your Okuma reel didn't seem to have the magnetic internal braking system found on other Okumas and other brands. It's normally found on the opposite side of the reel from the star drag and spool tension knob. That internal brake will also help many people that are new to baitcaster reels as they learn their technique.
I've found the magnetic brake to be very useful. I have mine set at around 60% on an Abu Garcia MaxPro and I can cast 1/8 ounce soft plastics pretty comfortably, only stopping the spool with my thumb as the lure hits the water.
After watching a couple videos on using baitcasters, I had my spool tension set for the weight of my lure, and the brake cranked all the way up. First cast barely went 5m out. I've since been tweaking only the brake to get more distance. And if I lower it too much, then I'll get overrun on the cast and the spool will bind up and stop the lure dead. Then it's just a cast of unpicking the bird's nest, reeling my lure back in, and increasing the brake a click or two. Having that magnetic brake just means you don't have to touch the spool during a cast, only at the end once the lure splashes down.
Great video. Really helpful. I needed this too
Jordan videos are the best
Good timing I am about to buy one. I want to be moving more . And it should be fun to looking into bass fishing next plus steelhead
I would like a 101 videos on what the different pole types and meanings of the descriptions (action, pounds), same thing for line. Like why you use on main line and different leader
Thanks for the video. I have always just used fly rods and spin fishing gear. Getting baitcasters for trolling but it will be nice to be able to cast as well.
I use the Helios it’s great. 65 lbs braid flinging frogs.
Awesome video very helpful 🤙🏽💯
Been a long time since I have used one!!!!!
Just got an Abu Garcia 6600.... THANKS for this video!
Im new to using a bait castor, I usually use a spinner rod, I was told to cast out in a “U”motion and at the same speed. But when I do that it doesn’t cast that far out. And apparently I get onto for not doing it right. I didn’t know you can cast it out just like you can with a spinner rod. Thank you for the tips, I will definitely have to test this out.
Great video - now I've got a much better idea of how to cast.
Great video Jordan
Awesome informative content as always... would have loved a little longer video explaining the side and underhand casting styles that Jordan mentioned and that I’ve seen in other ADX videos. Thanks for all you do for the fishing community.
Good instruction Jordan..
I need this so badly
thank you for the help i had no idea how to cast and way getting fruteraited with it
I would advise anyone new to baitcasters, should start with lighter, side hand casts than over head casts. You'll have better control using side hand casts.
Thanks!
I would concur with that
Thank you.
Do you guide Jordan? I wanna go with Cam as well, but I'm a bank fisherman for the most part and I would love to learn/teach my two kids about the spots and techniques on these rivers.
Yep, hit him up on IG
Awsome video. Just subscribed and getting into using jigs. Recommendations for a budget rod/reel. Planning on using trout magnets and some gulp minnows. It’s what local anglers are using. I live near a bass pro, sportsman warehouse and a turners.
We love Okuma, been partners with them for years and have helped them create of products. Can’t go wrong with them! But... Best advice is go to the store and pick them all up, feel them, look at them, pick the one that speaks to you!
Addicted Fishing Thanks! Will be going through your past videos during my commute. Hitting up bass Pro after work
Thank you brutha!
Very helpful especially with targeting.. my lure always ends up nowhere near my target lmao.. ur the first one to mention 45 degrees of the shoulder..got vids on sidearm casting woth baitcaster? Im very new to fishing never fished in my life but got a baitcaster for xmas so i want to try it lol
birds watching me fish baitcast: WHOA that guy NAILED it!
I needed this
Whats the advantage of a bait caster over a spinning reel? Nice job on the video!
More power fighting fish out of cover, faster casting, faster line retrieval as some baitcasters have fast gear ratios, better accuracy. Also they handle heavier baits better.
Follow up videos coming.
Great video
hey jorden i would love too see you do a video on troute fishing with a baitcaster , and can it be done ?
Can you put braid directly on a baitcaster or do you need a backing like on a spinning reel ?
Thank You!
Can you guys make a book of rigs? Something simple!
What do you mean?
I live on the Clackamas, I typically am a trout fisherman but want to get into salmon and steelhead. I tried a few years ago but honestly got overwhelmed with watching RUclips and trying to keep track of all the different fishing techniques and rigs for those techniques. I would love a simple booklet or pamphlet of all your favorite rigs drawn and laid out. If that makes sense! I know doesn’t line up with this video but I think it would be a great tool. I used to guide mountaineering and rock and I created a diagram for the haul systems to hand out to clients, it was super helpful. Thanks for the great videos and keep up the good work.
Mason Storfie Hmm maybe!
I've been running a baitcaster for many many years and had no idea that the drag had a factor in the castability of the lure, good to know. Also a side note, I still get birds nests every now and then when I get cocky and take all the magnets and brakes off trying to maximize my casts. You miss 100% of the casts that you don't make!
I bought the Abu Garcia black max and I just used it for the first time today.. my casts kept going way to the left.. I'm guessing I'm lifting my thumb too late.. and my casts are only going like 20-25 yards.. is that because I'm letting go too late too? Or is my tension to tight or what? My lure is able to hit the ground without backlashing so that should be correct right? Idk, ima keep practicing
With the bait casters that have the number dial on the side 1-10. What exactly is that controlling? The break also, right?
Have you ever seen someone not breathe for 11 minutes? Now I have!
Great video!
Probably snorkels in lakes, locating fish.
Good video but my baitcaster has a spool tension and a brake adjustment. Other videos show the adjustments of both.
Would liked to have seen other casting methods too such as side and flipping. Maybe another video.
here from ace videos 💯👀
Imma be honest. You guys are probably my favorite channel period. Not favorite fishing channel. Just my favorite channel. Love the content. But the local don’t.
Thank you!!
Nice!
Wow, I just bought my first one today and then this video came out. Mind readers lol
Hey guys, love the content! Great info on dialing in the tension knob. I was wondering, when going for a drag free float drift, should I loosen my tension a bit further than normal? I have a baitcaster on the way that I am throwing on a Raven float rod, and I also am coming from a Centerpin. Looking for that balance between smooth casting and smooth drifting - I was thinking maybe loosening my tensioner and tightening down the brake a ton could be the ticket. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
awesome man u rock
I've just bought my first baitcaster. I made the mistake a lot of people make (I think) and ordered the right hand retrieve reel. I have seen a lot of other people use the reel like that. I have assumed they were right handed so I ordered that way. Is this common?
What I would start out with is using a dummy weight, and cast in open ground. That way if you do get a birds nest you don't loose your lure if you get a backlash! I have lost a lot of lures by not checking my line drop, and while trying to fix it I hit a snag. Practice! Practice! Practice!
My 12 year old son wants to learn to use a bait caster. He’s right handed and I notice you’re right handed but your reel is on the left side. Should he learn with a reel on the right or left side? Is there a “proper” side to use for a right handed person? Thanks for any advice.
I use under 30 had problems I changed to 50 braid and now I can cast far
Can you do a powerbait fishing tips please?
On it!
Addicted Fishing thanks! I’m new to trout fishing and I love in Indiana and we only have one lake with trout and since they’re a bunch of stockers I think the powerbait will work well! Whatcha think?
ruclips.net/video/FlajBFIRPRI/видео.html
Just curious are u left handed or just prefer your baitcaster with left hand reel?
