Nightfall in Middle Earth is based around The Silmarillon which is sort of a prequel to Lord of the Rings. It was never completed before Tolkien died so his song (Christopher Tolkien) finished it and published it. Its a bit of a dry read as its very much almost a historical text and "history of the world" but parts of it are beautiful and very very interesting. Hansi's writing on this album is top notch. Very poetic and evocative.
Blind Guardian is indeed German. Though Hansi's english is excellent. While the european crowds are insane for Blind Guardian, I saw them twice here in the USA and both times the crowds were equally as passionate with everyone singing every word. This whole live show is amnazing. I believe I sent you a DVD of this actually! its called Imaginations Through the Looking Glass.
You guys still don't understand crowd interaction till you have seen a live version of Blind Guardian-The Bard's Song. Its impossible to describe and unlike anything you have seen. Needs to be your next BG reaction for sure. The ones from Wacken tend to be the best just due to the sheer massive size of that crowd.

  • @RagPlaysGames

So, this song is basically an interaction between one of the Valar, (Ulmo, the Lord of Water) an arch angel in the Lore of Middle Earth and Turgon the King of the Elves during the First Age in Tolkien's lore, thousands of years before the events of Lord of the Rings takes place. Ulmo is warning Turgon that a cataclysm is coming and his hidden city of Gondolin is about to get burned.
The backstory of this is, at one point the Deep Elves lived across the western sea with the Valar, in the Undying Lands, which was essentially heaven. At one point, Morgoth, who was the First Dark Lord, a former archangel crept into the halls of the the King of the Elves, murdered the king and stole three jewels that contained the light of two very important trees that used to light up the world before the sun and moon were created and then fled to Middle Earth. These things were hugely important, it was like stealing the holy grail. The King's firstborn son and his brothers swore an oath of revenge against Morgoth and vowed to take the Elves east across the sea to Middle Earth to wage war on Morgoth and recover their stolen property. The other Valar were strongly against this idea. Feanor, the firstborn son, decided the quickest way to get to middle earth would be to ask the Sea Elves for ships, the sea elves denied his request because it was against the wishes of the Valar and in return Feanor put their city to the sword, murdered them all and stole their ships. This was known as the Kinslaying at Aqualonde and it officially damned Feanor and all his descendents in the eyes of the Valar. But Feanor made it across the sea and died in the first battle while fighting a Balrog. ( A lesser demon.)
During this point, Feanor's younger brother Fingolfin was walking across the frozen sea in the north and had no knowledge of the heinous act his elder brother had committed. When he arrived in Middle Earth, Feanor was already slain and he was proclaimed the new High King.
In the song Ulmo speaks to Turgon, whose ancestor was Fingolfin, because Ulmo and some of the other Valar still had pity for them despite their defiance and warned them that their hidden city ("It lies unknown, the land of mine.") was about to be discovered by Morgoth and destroyed. Ulmo urges Turgon to forsake his oath to Feanor and that "true hope lies beyond the coast" back in the Undying Lands. That they were still a damned kind, can't you see? That the winds would change. Despite acknowledging this as wise council, Turgon still has friends that need help elsewhere in middle earth and he struggles with the idea of forsaking them even if it leads to his own ruin.
All of that back story is detailed in the songs "Nightfall" and "The Curse of Feanor" off the same album. Both of those are definitely worth a listen.

Very late reply, but Feanor was the one who created the Silmarils. That's one of the main reasons why Feanor tried so hard to destroy, or least harm, Morgoth. It was the main reason he swore his oath, and subsequently forced his followers and sons to swear it as well, all except for Finarfin, who turned back and rejoined the Valar. And he didn't die because of a lesser Balrog... he died because of Gothmog, the lord of all Balrogs.

Balrogs are just fallen Maiar which are akin to lesser angels. Even though his title is Lord of Balrogs, he remains a lesser demon, in that he is not on par with a greater demon such as Morgoth. "Mirror Mirror" is a single by the German power metal band Blind Guardian, released in 1998. Cover art was painted by Andreas Marshall. The song was composed for the 1998 album Nightfall in Middle-Earth. Lyrics of "Mirror Mirror", based on J. R. R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion, recount how Turgon, in view of inevitable defeat, builds the city of Gondolin, aided by Ulmo ("The Lord of Water").

As other people have already commented, the song (and album) is from JRR Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion', which is a history of Middle-Earth in the ages before The Hobbit/Lord Of The Rings takes place.
The song is about the founding of the hidden Elven city of Gondolin, after the forces of Morgoth (Sauron's master, and more powerful) sweep the forces of the elves, humans & dwarves aside(see the Blind Guardian song 'Time Stands Still') and take over the land.

Damn, was about time guys hahaha, classic among classics in the power metal genre, well the whole Nightfall in Middle Earth album is a classic, totally worth it to check out. It's entirely based on the Silmarillon (prequel of Lord of the Rings) And if you liked the crowd interaction will NEED to hear The Bard Song (the live version from this same DVD, or the live version at Wacken 2011), it's fantastic !

If I am not mistaken Mirror Mirror is (partially) about the fall of Nargothrond. The Valar of water Ulmo warned the elves to destroy a bridge, but they ignored the warning and the great dragon Glaurung crawled into the hidden halls of Nargothrond and destroyed the city.

@Sori. That guy is Denethos, his sons are Boromir and Faramir. Do not judge the character of Denethor by the movies. The movies basically were mass character assassination for Denethor in particular.

The singer from this band (Hansi) and the guitar player from Iced Earth (Jon Schaffer) have a side-band together called Demons & Wizards. They have two albums out and are about to start on a third I believe.

I think the song it's referring the period before the Third and Second Age of Middle Earth. The song's tale it's ambiented on the First Age of Middle Earth. And this tale was narrated in The Silmarillion; book written by JRR Tolkien too

Other folks nailed the song meaning already, but just reiterating- the song is talking about the founding of Gondolin. The protagonist is Turgon, one of the Elven kings of the first age, thousands of years prior to LotR. Ulmo is a Valar, an angelic power/god who rules the waters of the world. As he knows everything about any place water goes, he knows of a hidden valley that nobody else can find. He tells Turgon that the current location of his kingdom is doomed, the forces of evil are strengthening and the Elven kingdoms are going to fall. He is instructed to guide his people via a secret path to the hidden valley, further inland "beyond the shore" of the western sea where they were previously living, to found a new city, Gondolin, where they will be safe (for a while). As it is so well hidden, Gondolin is the last Elven stronghold to survive the destruction that dooms the rest of the high elven kingdoms of that age. In the Hobbit, the magic swords Gandalf and Thorin and Bilbo find in the troll's cave are said by Elrond to be from Gondolin.
