Maynard has a real sense of humor. Puscifer is his band that has a lot of comedy and weird performances, basically his solo project that's suffused with this sort of stuff. Tool usually includes a couple funny things like this mixed into their deep, intensely emotional albums - Puscifer is almost all funny things.
Awesome analysis guys! You put a couple of things together for me that I hadn't considered about this song lol. Just a few things: 1. Tool had a demo before their Opiate EP that had some songs from Undertow on it, and were playing even more songs from Undertow live in their early days. But when they got signed the label told them to put their heaviest songs from their catalog on the EP because they were "metal" and basically had to fit into this box. That might be what he's referring to as far as how he sold out before this guy knew his name and how he sold his soul to make a record. 2. This has probably been said in the comments but I don't think you touched on it - Maynard is referring to himself as the hooker with a penis. He likely feels as if he's putting all of himself into his music just for it to be sold as a product and consumed by the masses, who lightly enjoy or dismiss it on a surface level. I can see this as kind of the plight of everyone who cares about their craft to that degree. 3. I do think musicians can sell out, though it's less of a problem in rock these days since it's not a "popular" genre anymore. When an artist changes their style transparently to ride popular music trends *and* loses their entire sense of identity (like, what made them special in the first place), THAT is when I'd say they've sold out. I think a lot of people just consider artists changing their style as selling out.

I’m a professional artist and illustrator. I get about 10 emails a day asking me to work on various projects. Out of those 10, 1-3 May be offering pay. 0-1 are actually jobs that would pay my rate. Artists and musicians have always been devalued. Even more so in the age of internet downloading and file sharing. It’s crazy. I once had a relative who is a plumber. Ask me to design him a tattoo. He was shocked that I’d charge him. I had to remind him that when he put in a new garbage disposal for us, I chose him and gave him the business to support him. And he was like... yeah, but this is easy for you! I had to explain to him that switching out a garbage disposal takes less than an hour. The detailed piece of art you want, may take me a full day. It never ceases to amaze me.
THANK YOU! Art is NOT appreciated as it once was. I am a Conceptual Designer and Storyboard Illustrator. People have no idea what goes into making art for "commerce (or entertainment)" let alone for fun. But its like a friend who has been a 3D and Concept Designer for 25 years in the Video Game Industry says; "People think we are Xerox machines and Art just comes out of our ass". This goes the same for Musicians, sure the newer guys are happy to take "donations" but the veterans came from a different era, and watched as the recording industry changed. They may have, or wanted to make music a career, but if they are creating music that is not "radio friendly", they need a 9 to 5 job to supplement their income, take care of families, pay bills, and to record music (and all that entails to do so). Remember, if you are not invited to bigger venues, bands "Pay to Play", its not like the old days when bands were "asked" to play a venue and get paid for it (and it wasn't that much, but they could pay their crew, room & board etc.). The Plumber analogy goes both ways too. The plumber has a rate and that's how it is, but in Art, people want LESS for "more". It takes time (time is money) to create "Concept Art" (that is; sketching designs "until" the client is satisfied with the direction its going, cleaning it up, and then possible creating the "Final" design, making it pretty, painting it and ready to "Show Off" for the promotion team). Sometimes this isn't just a day or 2 of work, it can go from 5 days to a month or longer, depending how many designs are needed. And we have to travel to the client, pay for materials, there is always "back and forth" with the client, wanting changes (sometime minute changes that make no sense) and "waiting" to hear back from clients via-phone/texts or emails to proceed to the next phase. Making "Logos" for bands is even worse! Metal and Prog bands have no money :p I'd be LUCKY to get $300 for a logo from concept to finished piece. Unless you are Roger Dean, Rodney Matthews, Dan Seagrave, Travis Smith etc. and you have that reputation, you will only get what they expect, unless you hold fast to your principles and self-worth. There is that attitude also; "What, you think you're Rembrandt or something!?" Well . . . . yeah, we aspire to be one, but if the client thinks we aren't worth that much, then there is a overriding question that asks really loudly; If we are not that "good" to get paid better, that means you think WE are "mediocre" . . . If I do discover a band I like on RUclips (and I create Playlists on my channel), I eventually buy a physical copy, and I try to see them and buy their merch.

I've been a musician for 29 years now and actively playing/touring for 24 of those years....it is a pain in the ass and a shit ton of thankless, PAYLESS work 90% of the time. Maynard and the boys most certainly have paid their dues even back then. Hence why every time I listen to this song from when it was released to now it makes me laugh out loud!!! Great review as always guys, keep it up.

You guys are exactly what I was looking for when I was looking for a reaction to this video! I just paused it at 5.33 and realized you guys have 20 more minutes of talking to do. I'm going to go back to the video!
Any artist of any kind must be free to change their art as they proceed through their career. If we are going to use the word "sellout" then save it for specifics. Speilberg replacing the guns in E.T. with walkie-talkies only for a repackaging the movie for an anniversary re-release. That was for family sales numbers He certainly has the right to do it but it changes already created art. Metallica didn't sell out because they made a commercially successful and different sounding album like "The Black Album" or "Load" "RELOAD", however, was stuff already not good enough for the first album! Like they couldn't have made a double-album at the time? It didn't hurt "Hardwired." It is never about changing the style or wanting to be commercially successful. To "sell out" means to deliberately change what you are successful at for the sake of a corporate suit telling you what to do. Pantera started out as a hair-metal band....did they sell-out by becoming Metal? No. They did it because they wanted to and guess what...it worked! No Corporate suit in history ever PREFERRED Metal! Good is good. Bad is bad. It is ALWAYS a matter of honesty to yourself.
reload and load were written and recorded at the same time, they spaced them out as separate releases because they thought it'd sell better than as a double album. also hardwired is actually a minute shorter than load, but got released as a double album because vinyl is selling again whereas it wasn't in the 90s
I blame the music industry and the record labels. And I don't have a problem with bands making money off their art either, but these guys and gals enter into contracts and then have to turn out "X" amount of music per those contractual obligations, which is often manipulated by the company as to maximize profit. A lot of bands realize a couple of albums in, that the industry and record labels are full of crap, but to go against them, break that contract, is a monumental task. I remember the guitarist for Tool, Adam Jones, stating that when they first started out, think it was on Zoo, that the label only would accept their heaviest songs for their albums because they were trying to "sale" them as a heavy metal band.
So...that was the same as Opeth's "Deliverance" and "Damnation"? I did not know that...I thought the final recordings were a year apart (as opposed to Opeth's recording at the same time) So you are educating me here. I thought "Reload" was a way to release something while on a two-year tour. If that is incorrect, I have to reconsider.
Maynard was a stunt man, the guitarist and bassist both I believe were working in special effects. pretty sure one of them worked on the original Nightmare on Elm Street
More Clutch please "Burning Beard " or "Never Be Moved" I know you guys really were impressed with the content from your first review of them, but then nothing, Neil's lyrics are genius.
Vin! I love you, my brother! You too, Sori lol. Your passion and excitement for Tool is so physical and obvious. You guys totally get it, and It’s so contagious the way you convey your love for the band.
Sori, you are thinking of the song Prison Sex off of "Undertow," the album before this one. BTW, for those suggesting songs and bands in the comments section here, Vin and Sori have stated that they don't take suggestions off of RUclips comments unless they've changed their policy. You have to either do it through a Patreon Alliance or you can do so for free on their website in the Request & Polls section. Don't shoot the messenger, and I don't agree with how they choose to not include RUclips suggestions; but, it's how they've decided to choose how they pick songs to do reactions to.
I’m on a Vin, Sori Tool binge. I find that they focus almost exclusively, intently on the lyrics, and the mastery of the extraordinary vocals. They seem to ignore the legendary drums, the crazy original guitarist, the melding of the bass guitar with the beats and screaming lead..........it’s the first listen for these folks, Gotta breathe. Ok.
Maynar used to work in a pet shop before tool and also at the early days, Adam Jones is a trained sculptor, he worked sculpting dinosours in Jurasic park, makinf special FX in Terminator 2, also doing make up and FX in Predator. He actually was very succesful.

I don't regularly comment on videos, but I just had to say that I LOVE the point made starting at about 11:40 in the video. There are many artist that change, and maybe I don't care for the changes, but I always respect the choices an artist makes about their personal art. And I hate when I hear people say "why don't they just keep doing the same kind of music?!?!" I just stumbled upon your videos, and have only seen a few of your Tool reactions, but I think I'm a fan. As long as you only do Tool songs....
There's a few reasons Ænima is my all time favorite record. This song and the yet to be posted video for the title song are among those reasons. The frustration and "fuck you too, pal" mentality hit a chord with me when I was a teenager when this came out. It still does too. The CD art was pretty dope too.
Love that intro haha, me and my college friends used to bump that song and have a little mosh pit whenever/wherever we were when we heard "AARREE YOUUU REEAADY" and it was always fucking hilarious. Nostalgia for days lmao
FINALLY!!! I've been begging my favorite reactors to do this song for ages! I think the title has scared them all off. You guys were pretty nervous as it started... but I knew once you realized what it's really about, you would totally dig it!
I'm sitting here, drinking Pineapple Passion Fruit Soda/Vodka, and loving your reactions! Despite simply conveying a message, music is also meant for fun, and you guys both had a lot of fun!
Before the days of the Interwebs there were fanclubs and fanzines, OGT was an underground tool fanclub/magazine that would send shit out and keep in touch through the mail. Tool Stans
At this point in time Maynard has three separate bands and a winery in Arizona. Danny drums obviously for Tool and for a jazz group. I am not sure what either of the guitarist do except for 1 does the animation for their videos and artwork
A big thing with selling out is, did they sell out? Or buy in? Did they change everything for "the man" or did they make him accept as is? Perceptions don't constitute facts
I’m a sculptor who uses found objects as a medium. The 2IC at work assumes that I’m a hoarder, but I’m collecting sculptural materials toward an eventual exhibition. It’s frustrating to meet people who misinterpret one’s intentions and refuse to accept that perspective.

I'm going to go back to the video!
I love how hype Sori gets in this one
U guys made me smile :)
Thank u!
You can blast Tool and Pantera all day every day, loving it!!
I love your reactions, straight up. Your reaction to this classic song is badass. Respect.
Tool "No Quarter" Led Zeppelin cover
Vicarious - TOOL
What is amazing about Maynard is his military background...still 2 decades later blows my mind...west point.
.wow
Which explains why Radiohead released "In Rainbows" the way they did.
Sori’s reaction was classic-realizing the lyrics are saying/describing what your thinking about saying.🤘🖖😆😂🤣👌
Maynard was a stunt man, the guitarist and bassist both I believe were working in special effects. pretty sure one of them worked on the original Nightmare on Elm Street
I know Adam Jones is in the credits on Predator and Terminator 2 at least.
😂😂😂 Yes It's Me Again! Been Awhile 🤣😂😅😂 YOU Hit The Nail On The Head! Nothing More to Say!!😂🤣😂
Jinjer - Who Is Gonna Be The One (live)
Scar Symmetry - The Illusionist or the Iconoclast!!
First time watcher. I love how this song hit deep for you all! Shows the genius of Tool. Love it.
Thanks for including "the band"in your discussion. Not just Maynard.
Ok.
This is an awesome song and I loved seeing your reaction during the song. great one
Maynar used to work in a pet shop before tool and also at the early days, Adam Jones is a trained sculptor, he worked sculpting dinosours in Jurasic park, makinf special FX in Terminator 2, also doing make up and FX in Predator. He actually was very succesful.
Paul D'amour and Adam were in college together studying the same thing,Paul wanted to be a claymation artist.
Sori, that was SPOT ON. "The kid wants Maynard to sell out to him". Brilliant observation!!!!
Our fav reaction so far! Amazing. Love you two.
Genuinely one of my favourite tool songs... love your reactions 😂
yall are like the only reactionaries' with a reaction video to this particular song, I've been asking nearly every reactionary that I watch to do this song and nobody ever has. you're fuckin awesome. the end.
Brilliant minds my dears, just found you and love you both! Tool has been my fave since I was 14 and I will be 40 this year🤦♀️ Anyways, totally subscribed so keep it up! I love it!
Hell yeah guys. Love and respect.
Crowded House, Dont Dream Its Over!! You need to do it . Very important song that musicians like Mic Fleetwood and Dave Mustaine have spoke about and love. Crowded House Dont Dream Its Over!!
This song is brilliant on so many levels... one of my favorites from Aenima.
I'm glad you decided to slip down the rabbit hole. TOOL is a fungi on my being
To this day I enjoy reminding certain fans to listen to the song the band dedicated to them in '96. Some need to chill.
I’m not a mega Tool fan but they’re great. They took 13yrs between putting out their new CD, they’re far from sellouts. Viscous band👍
I don't regularly comment on videos, but I just had to say that I LOVE the point made starting at about 11:40 in the video. There are many artist that change, and maybe I don't care for the changes, but I always respect the choices an artist makes about their personal art. And I hate when I hear people say "why don't they just keep doing the same kind of music?!?!"
I just stumbled upon your videos, and have only seen a few of your Tool reactions, but I think I'm a fan.
As long as you only do Tool songs....
Love that track! You say I sold out but you bought the record...
Love you guys
There's a few reasons Ænima is my all time favorite record. This song and the yet to be posted video for the title song are among those reasons. The frustration and "fuck you too, pal" mentality hit a chord with me when I was a teenager when this came out. It still does too. The CD art was pretty dope too.
Novembers Doom - Autumn Reflection
6 months, over 365 times
definitely need 2 do some novembers doom i love buried old
Me: *Looks the title*
"YES."
I love that even the instrumentals sounds mocking.
Gotta love it when Maynard gets right to the point.
Love that intro haha, me and my college friends used to bump that song and have a little mosh pit whenever/wherever we were when we heard "AARREE YOUUU REEAADY" and it was always fucking hilarious. Nostalgia for days lmao
For some reason people think if you give someone a lot of money the quality automatically drops of a product. Makes no sense.
Hurt-overdose or anything else from Volume 1. You guys did Rapture and it was awesome.
I second this
FINALLY!!! I've been begging my favorite reactors to do this song for ages! I think the title has scared them all off. You guys were pretty nervous as it started... but I knew once you realized what it's really about, you would totally dig it!
Patreon is about supporting content as well as the people you love and feel deserve it.
Your likes and dislikes are 46 and 2. Just saying
🤯🤯 Reverend Maynard intervened here
Who the fuck is disliking this? This is great content lol
Maybe the guy with nipple rings and new tattoos who was OGT from the first EP and his goons. lol
I missed that.

It must have been just ahead of me ...
"It's always these people who don't dedicate themselves to a craft that always have the fuckin opinions." Gold!
I'm sitting here, drinking Pineapple Passion Fruit Soda/Vodka, and loving your reactions! Despite simply conveying a message, music is also meant for fun, and you guys both had a lot of fun!
Love this. Remember, it is easier to destroy than it is to create.
They got bought out and still sold the record is what I'm getting
Badflower - Ghost
Such a great song!
Thanks for brightening my week guys!
Before the days of the Interwebs there were fanclubs and fanzines, OGT was an underground tool fanclub/magazine that would send shit out and keep in touch through the mail. Tool Stans
I'll never get sick of watching people hear Tool songs for the first time. I can only assume that's what I looked like the first time as well!!
Love their reaction, l have never seen them have so much fun listening to a song.
Always a fan favorite!!!
18:34. I hope they don’t extrapolate Dump from this. I’m already heated cuz they are throwing so much under the bus.
Real work.
Probably the biggest "fuck you" song ever but also hilarious LOL
Good lord, imagine being that guy and having to live knowing you're that guy!!
This song and Aenima are my favorites on this album.
Those two, and H for me.
I pretty much like every single song on Aenima, but respect your opinion.
Anthrax - In My World, In the End, Indians, Inside Out and What Doesn't Die
I think this is your best, or at least funniest, reaction video! Love your channel, keep up the great work!
my first time I'm hearing this holy shit this is amazing! glad I'm doing all tool songs with you two since they're coming here in May
Just started watching your channel today! You guys are awesome!!

Little pig, little pig
Let me in!
The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see.
The other side of the mountain was all that he could see.
You mean Green Jell-Y, don't you? Lol
