What the group were saying is the guy who was hyper critical of the band for selling out, Was being a hypocrite. The guy was dressed in brand fashion drinking coke and buying the album. Maynard's issue with him is the guy lives in the western world, wears fashion and buys branded everything. Clearly enjoys being part of western culture. He has no right to call anyone a sellout. The line "I'm the man and you're the man and he is the man aswell. You can point your f%%%ing finger up your a$s!" Anyone who uses money is a sellout. Damn right he sells out, He writes songs that are important to him. He pours his soul into the music and he sells it for profit. Anyone with a job they hate or anyone who follows trends could be considered a sell out, We're all doing what we need to get paid and survive at the end of the day.

      But incorrect.
By saying he sold his soul to make a record (putting in blood, sweat and years) but you bought one, He's saying the kid in the 501's, with a dope beastie tee, in fashion, with all his expensive accoutrement, had no soul to give; he had to buy everything that he is. It wasn't about the label pushing them. This is about the irony of the copycats telling someone who is making the right moves, and finding success, that they're doing wrong and change is bad.

Hi Jay and Steph! Another OGT here! I always saw HWAP as a middle finger to all the whining fans that disliked Undertow from their first 2 releases. The band matured and expanded. They hardly went mainstream. Tool fans can be kinda nuts and possessive of the music. Can't wait for their next release in August! Favorite song to listen when drunk is Lateralus. "SPIRAL OUT, KEEP GOING!"

    • @derekfletcher8934

Hi Gail, that's a great insight and what I've always thought as well. As well as just a generalized discontent with what we'd call "hipsters" nowadays. Look at the song "Aenima" when Maynard says things like "fret for your figure and fret for your latte and fret for your lawsuite" as well as "fuck retro anything, fuck your tattoos, fuck all these gun-toting hip gangster wannabes" etc. Great album through and through and I am so stoked for the new one to FINALLY drop! 13 years in the making baby! Cheers

My take has always been that Tool are saying that EVERYONE is the hooker / sell-out. Everyone is also the John, and the capitalist society is the pimp that is gaining the profits when we turn our tricks.
The breakdown: The opening lines kind of give it away. Maynard's lyrics describe a boy (likely a teen or young adult) that is described wearing name-brand clothing. It may have been alternative name brands at the time, but they were still name brands for a target audience. He claims that Tool were selling out for changing their music. Any musician should aim to grow and evolve, but many fans automatically accuse artists of selling out. So much irony having the Band be told by a kid wearing name brand clothes that they are sell-outs.
Maynard goes on to state that the fans only know what the band has sold them. The fans consume the information the band makes available, but the band still gets to choose what information they supply the fans with, through their music and their interviews. While this song came out in 1996, this even now coincides with Social Media in today's world and with what Bands state on their official pages and feeds.
Any writer or artist knows that when you make art, you are exposing a piece of your soul to create. You are expressing a bit of yourself in every work you craft. When Tool decided to start selling their music to the world, they were thereby selling their souls, a piece at a time.
Maynard concludes with a statement about EVERYTHING you buy and wear being a product, and that ultimately we're all getting screwed by Capitalism, so if you can screw someone else by selling a product (like Tool with their albums) then you should do it, making everyone "The Man." He tells fans to keep buying records and sending them money. Go ahead and call them sell-outs, you still paid to buy their album and come to their show.

This video was great. Loved it. Is the first video I've seen from you guys and I was very entertained.
I'm a huge Tool fan. Have been for a very long time. It's cool to see your reaction to their music. Music, humor, and love are the things that bring us together as humans. I'm glad you are here.
You got the gist of it Steph, almost immediately, which was great! Tool music isn't necessarily about smacking you in the head with what their songs necessarily mean, so much as it is an experience that opens up dialogue and your own consciousness in not only feeling the song, but applying those feelings to what the song may mean to you.
As others have noted, the vitriol of the song was aimed at the fans of convenience, posers, who sit back and criticize artists who produce, saying they've sold out in order to gain success, etc.
I'm less inclined to think that this song is a direct attack from the band to its fans, but more ask attack on those who say that they are fans, but really aren't. It points out the pitfalls of consumerism, especially when it comes from critical consumers who actually produce nothing but income for those that they criticize.
The whole song is basically a play on words to point out the double standard and the real hypocrisy in fair weather fans, and to show them that they are their own criticisms.
But you immediately saw that part of it. Kudos to you.

Ogt means (original gangster tool) which has two perspectives.
One 92 first ep means he’s been a fan since the ep
Two original gangster tool also means he’s acting like a tool
and at the beginning of the song he's naming all the hypocritical brand name clothing supporting the man along with sipping on his coke that's a brand so he's also selling out

Maynard from Tool can scathe someone so easily, usually with pretty articulate vocabulary, which tends to make the song hilarious to me. The Pot, Hooker With a Penis, Eulogy, Aenima, Ticks & Leeches... they're all stellar but my favorite is The Pot. There's a great cover here on RUclips fronted by this gorgeous lady, backed by a brass band. She does Maynard justice 100%

Billy Joe Armstrong, from Green Day, responded to questions that they sold out. He said: “Yeah, we sell every show”.
Fans who say a band is a sellout miss the point that these bands are all trying to make a living doing something they love. If they expand their fan base beyond their original fans, it’s because they have the mass appeal they were striving for in the first place.

Noooo. they are being satirical. The album that this song is on is their 3rd album (released in 1996) , and they are just flippi'n a big middle finger to the nay sayers, cuz Tool does what they want. Tool has actually maintained control over their music over the years. That's why there has always been so much time between their albums, that and because Maynard James Keenan has 2 other bands he works with, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.

OGT means original Tool fan or a fan from the beginning when the band was 1st starting & had only released an EP of music….this was in 1992 because Tool (& Rage Against the Machine as well) didn’t gain a national audience until the early summer of 93,both bands while virtually unknown outside of Cali managed to secure slots on that summers Lollapalooza main stage (they had awesome, well connected management apparently) & the rest is how they say history 🥶🖤

Seen them again in June at Rock am Ring. It was dead cold and stormy, which killed the sound to some extend, but it was still a great concert.
