The Pot" is a song by American rock band Tool and was released as the second single from their fourth studio album 10,000 Days (2006). According to Adam Jones, it is confirmed to be about hypocrisy and is a double entendre that refers to both drug intoxication and believing oneself to be above others, deriving from the phrase "pot calling the kettle black".

Tool is some next level shit.
Wanna talk next level, look up 46&2 and the meaning behind it.
Lateralus..... nuff said
i spent a lot of money for a two day trip see them. worth it.;)
@@billycooke6208 👍
@@kevinkendall3122 🦶
"I shoulda smoked some pot before this video" "I need some weed..." I was crying, you guys are so great 😂
Great reaction, guys! You must, must, must do "Vicarious." One of Tool's best and my personal favorite. Its a beauty
Now you know who the GOAT of any and all Rock genres is!!! Tool is the shit in all categories!! Love you both and welcome to the family 😁
Rich SVvital completely agreed. What’s your thoughts on the newer band, Gojira?
@@DoubleKlutchRacing the music is good, but not a fan of the growl singing too much
Rich SVvital fair enough! To each their own haha
Love the Tool reaction.
Seriously.....Tool is in a league of their own. Keep listening, keep reacting to Tool.
Listen to Schism by Tool. First lyrics, then watch the official music video and see how your interpretation of the lyrics changes instantly.
The Yellow Dart Bubz I don’t know man I know both interpretations of the song I can internalize it but those fucking videos I don’t know
Ok there's some rules to Tool, the singer Maynard James Keenan is in 3 bands Tool, A perfect circle and pucifer. He mixed his lyrics between the bands to tell a story about his mom. Beware his fans will want you to get the story right so... When you listen to there songs Do Judith by A Perfect Circle, Then wings for Marie 1 &2 then Tools 10,000 days. Then Jimmy for his story. Its pretty deep. Oh yeah the dude owns a vinyard.I recommend a glass of wine and some Crown 2 fingers and 2 ice cubes
Thomas Todd not about his mom it’s all about himself personal growth and evolution can you dig it
I'm trying to give a vauge perspective so they can figure it out on their own
Let's put the tip in before we get to the Wings for Marie? ;)
Also Momma Sed and Sour Grapes by Puscifer.
Fuck yeah man, not a big pucifer fan though. I love tool and apc. It takes a special mind to appreciate Maynard for the genius he is.
Tool fans are a somewhat fanatic bunch. Lol
alexfrank6534 yes they are❤️❤️❤️
A cult is a better way to put it. LOL. Tool is their own genre to say the least. Learn to swim.
Yes we are
100% I'm in that bunch
Because we love this band's brains not it's body.
Lead guitar and Bass guitar... Tool is in a category all their own. The more you listen to them the more you will understand. Lyrics by Maynard James Keenan are really awesome. Very intelligent individual. There are very few actual music videos but they are done by the lead guitar player. I hope y'all get some ear phones so y'all can hear all the detailed parts in their music and we can jam with y'all too. PEACE!
“I need some weed” 😂 welcome to progressive rock. Tool doing tool...We are all hypocrites. Suggestion- Pink Floyd - Dogs
And the song is about the illegalization of weed lol
Jamie Collingwood I can tell you are a good man. Carry on, sir.
I love y’all so much. It’s refreshing to see these types of reactions. Usually people just listen and say.. “that’s dope”. Y’all go above and beyond! Love from New Orleans
Neutral Ground side!
Tool - Vicarious
believe me you will not regret ;)
I just love seeing new people vibing with TOOL🔥
Girl, you definitely get tool....
I'm so impressed with how quickly you interpreted the lyrics, from go! Yes, the instruments are out of this world, and the lyrics are just as intense....it's a transcendental journey. If you ever get to go to a concert......never pass it up!! I LOVED watching you guys so much. Good job! And if you see this message.....listen to 46 & 2, and then watch the kids at Georgia O'Keefe school cover it....it'll blow your mind! Much Love to all the Tool vibers! 💟
Every tool song means what you take from it . In my opinion. The words are so deep it means something different to everyone
Jambi by Tool!
Great choice for a reaction.
Vicarious by Tool
Great choice for a reaction.
Love your reaction Step n Jay Lee! Interpret Tool how ever you want and it makes the song yours! I would ask that you give Right in two and Parabol&Parabola a listen
What makes it even better is that the music is written and done BEFORE Maynard does the lyrics. He does all his writing last.
Thanks for the reaction. Great choice. Tool are great. They are a progressive rock band, with psychedelic influences and deep lyrics. They are the Pink Floyd of the 90ies and 00s. The band itself describes Tool as "Thinking man's metal". For me they always were one of the most interesting and intelligent mainstream bands next to System of a down. Both had platinum records, both won grammies. It's amazing when you think about how unique and experimental they are. Nothing you would expect to be that popular.
Steph got it right immediately.... love it!
I really enjoyed this reaction video. good analysis/interpretation of the song. Tool is the best band ever.
Yep
2 nd time watching you guys
2 massive spirits
Opening doors no man can close
And closing doors no man can open
Awesome stuff ✅
Love you guys, amazing chemistry, and damn, you get it, you get it ! Next Tool song I suggest, is a heavy one, Right in Two... instant sub !
I have listened to this genre of music for a long time and, often, didn't know what the message was and especially no one to discuss it with. Thank you for shedding light!
I just subscribed after enjoying you two enjoy one of my favorite songs. I look forward to watching more of your videos because I'm also on here to learn. Can't wait to see what songs I haven't heard before as well.
Maynard has to be in the top ten Rock and roll frontmen of all time. Guy has three bands and they are all awesome, he writes lyrics in his car eating Gellato and even Kurt Cobain thought Maynard was on another level than him. I have Maynard up there with Jagger and Axel Rose
"even kurt cobain". I mean, Nirvana is great and Kurt is also great you know... but they are also overrated.
Axel Rose is garbage.... shallow lyrics and one singing-style/sound with his voice. Axel is possibly the most OVER RATED front men, I don't get it.
TheBlackfall234 damn right, Nirvana was a money pit for MTV and should not ever be a reference point about a band as great as Tool! Nirvana was mediocre at best and MTV was jamming them down our teenage throats all day. Glad to hear the truth of it with all the hype they still get. Tool is the greatest band in human history!❤️🔥🤘🏼
Axl Rose...hahahahahaha
If Kurt Cobain had half the talent Maynard has in one finger his albums would've been good.
Steph- Amazing analysis. I love how you pick up the meanings straight away and find the rhythm equally. Watched Hooker, and again you were right on as well! Jay? Ummm... You all are great! Keep going.
Love seeing new tool fans!
You’ve had the Tool-aide and you’re hooked like the rest of us!! Love it!
There is always many levels to Tool's music. They are a rabbit hole band, the more you realize and/or learn the the songs reveal
Also I really dig you guys, honest and open reactions 👍. I would say that Tool =subscribers ,as well as A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, all have very passionate fan bases
I'm telling you right now this woman is an absolute genius
I love watching both of you react to music that is outside your previous experience and that I've been listening to my whole life. You two are great together and make me even more grateful for my relationship with my wife. Please keep it up. You're fantastic.
Listening to Tool and a perfect circle in a certain order is kind of like listening to a story and how it evolves
Saw them live this year, in Birmingham AL.
They did this song during their set, put on a GREAT SHOW!
Entertaining because you can tell that she is actually enjoying the music and he is just enjoying being close to her.
This is the second video I've ever seen on your RUclips channel, you caught my attention with this song. This is one of my favorite Tool songs.
2:16, "Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" is basically what they're saying.
8:46 "Liar, lawyer, mirror for you, what's the difference ?!?" Neither one of the three can be trusted
Every time steph says "I love this breakdown" i get a little serotonin boost
TOOL- Pushit LIVE 1.31.2012 (huntingtonst1) THIS WAY YOU WILL SEE HOW GOOD THEY ARE LIVE JUST AMAZING, MIND BLOWING
My most favorite version so far is the Salival version. Is this one the same?
NO IT IS THE ORIGINAL
Pushit is a must, either version.
If you want live Tool it's hard to beat Sober from the Reading Festival.
Deep deep band, they are really in their own genre too be honest. Great reaction, love how much you guys are getting into the rock/metal, there's no turning back now.
This is the band that opened my musical mind.
The pot is the song that I heard from tool and the song that got me into them, it’ll always be special to me
Tool-Lateralus. One of the deepest songs ever made.
The wooo waaahhh sounds is Mr Adam Jones doing magic on the guitar!
Justin Brink only it’s not. The guitar plays rhythm and the bass guitar handles the solo. Justin Chancellor is who is making magic on his bass.
@@MrAndersonmm hmm... I'll have to listen again. I've been wrong before. If so, thanks for the heads up.
Adam makes that sound, don't know for sure how, have tried to find out but can't, not with the guitar but his voice and microphone, maybe something else, watch a live version
Love the tension and dissonance of TOOL. They cause a comfort pain that widen's the senses and put's one on high alert. Look at someones face when they are deep into the music and you see them going through a lot with their own memory attached feelings. A definition of art and the pinnacle of modern music.
Great reaction. Longtime Tool fan here so I always appreciate freethinkers expanding their tastes to include this music and sharing the experience with you was a treat. Hope to hear from you again soon!
Do Jimmy. Its about his mom getting paralyzied when he was 11 and being sent to live in ohio with his dad. He is kinda like talking to his 11 yr old self to get past the pain now and move on
aww did his dad treat him bad then
That was fun to watch. Tool is the greatest!
Waiting patiently for a Gojira reaction, loved this one guys. Honestly I’d do lyric videos for any rock/Metal song you guys do until you get used to the very varied pitches, voices and what not.
Four men, drums, bass, guitar, vocals... Great reaction on this one...
My fave Tool song. Glad you liked it!
This song is about all the legal issues tool has faced from the record label to band management and also from production members of the albums. They have been sued by the first record label for breach of contract, finally got released from the label signed with the new label. Had to sue there old management team for after the lateralus record. Then right before the 10,000 days record they were sued buy a member of the production team for copy right infringement on stuff the band designed for the record. They have had quite a legal battle.
Ok....my last comment...you gotta use real speakers for Tool. You gotta get that deep bass plunge and the low tuned guitar, with the wide, commanding vocal range.
Your laptop/ PC can't handle that depth.
I LOVE your name!🤣👍
That sound was the guitarist, Adam Jones. He helped design a lot of our childhood movie characters before he created ''']['''{[]}{[]}''][,,,,,,
Welcome to the Tool club! All are welcome, but some won't listen!
You all are great.
I recently got into rock and found tool within the last two years, they really are amazing lyrically and spiritually, I think.
Oh, to add, this song is about a few things, but mostly injustices by our law enforcement.
So jealous of you 2 starting the Tool journey. So fun to watch as you get sucked into their world
I wish Steph and Jay were my parents! There’s something so very loving and cool about them! And if you like Tool, you’re cool!
It's so great to see the exchanging of cultures minds and Visions rhythms the rabbit hole only gets deeper from here
Thanks so much for being in the 'Better Group' of Reactioners ~ because some of them actually just sit there and stare blank without real commentary like anyone wants to see that. p.s.(simple play on words; the reeference; refer is the reeference; as it is INFERED get it?
Here for the TOOL, you guys are awesome, Cheers friends!🤙🤘
"Foot in mouth and head up asshole, whatchu talkin bout? I'm gonna have to say that to a couple of people, I done found me a new line." LMAO I LOVE IT
"When you point one finger at somebody you got four fingers pointin back at yourself." "God damn right." - TRUE FACTS!!!!!!
Great video, you guys are tuned in!
Welcome to the Tool family!!!! one of my first concerts was Tool when i was in college. My fraternity brother and I went and almost died on they way there, long story, and it was one of the most amazing concerts I have ever been to. Maynard never looked at the crowd, the entire concert he sang with his back to us and with the lights and the visuals on the huge monitors, it was like being in one of their videos.
Welcome to the world of “tool”
I am so in love with you both... never thought about the lyrics this way and am a fan from their start. I got The drummer high in an alley doing a gig with his first band Pigmy love circus. Thank you for being open minded!
Larry Zeno 🤗
always up vote TOOL, plus you two are great. Keep being you.
Nice analogy! Thanks for paying attention. Tool’s lyrics r 50% meaning. The other half is an experience. Hope u enjoyed.
I love yall two... you have great dynamics... You can tell that you guys are "real" and what you have is as well. You are also intelligent. You catch alot of stuff that people miss. I'm so glad yall found TOOL though because they are the greatest ever. Musically and lyrically incredible. I hope you stay with them . They will bring you so much knowledge and entertainment. Btw its steal, borrow, "Reaper". Peace and love!!!
You guys seem like the nicest people. I really wish you all the positivity.
Nice seeing you guys groove to one of the great progressive rock bands. Their lyrics can be very obscure.
Love it. You know there coming out with a new album Finalllllllllyyyyyy after years of waiting. One of the best drummers ever. And metal vocalists ever. Ever.
Every time I listen to this song after not hearing it in a while I always think to myself "ooohhh!! The Pot. The pot calls the kettle black!"
T00L=Guitar+Bass+Drums+Vocals.
"uh...what she said" got me laughing out loud over here
For anyone who doesn't understand the use of the phrase "cozened indigo" (because I surely didn't when I first heard it)
Cozened= trick or decieve
Indigo= symbolizes wisdom
And the lyricist says in a book he wrote that it's about the congregation that his mother attended. You can put that together however you like. Powerful, none the less.
Great reaction , it’s THE POT calling the kettle black !
Just some insight to some of the lyrics...... "eyeballs deep in muddy water" refers to the biblical punishment for hypocrisy, forced to stand in muddy water to eyes. "Weeping shades of cozened indigo" and "got lemon juice up in your eye" refer to crocodile tears or meaningless tears. The singer's friend was hit with the maximum sentence for possession of weed and a few months later. the sentencing judge was caught with a bunch of weed....hence, "fucking hypocrite" and meaning of song.
Can't wait for your reaction to Lateralus. That's a totally mind-blowing song. A journey beyond this world.
Y’all are awesome lol. One of my favorite reaction channels on RUclips. React to this time it’s different by Evans blue. Y’all may like that.
Ms. Sip is never wrong. 💯
I loved this and love that you guys interact with all your fans
Dang I love Tool! I'm 41 and I've been involved in music all of my life, starting as a little kid in church. Everything about Tool is excellent, and from their lyrics to their instrumentation they're a cut above the rest. I love the way they write.
So many reaction videos these days... you guys are gold and funny. ty
That sound is guitar going through a voice box. Great Reaction!!!
TOOL yeah!
This is my third Tool video here. This lady gets it. Next level soon.
Lol I love you two. So much fun to watch your reactions.
All I had to see was 3 things to immediately subscribe, tool, paying attention and a beautiful living couple. Is there hope for mandkind now?👌🙏🙌👏. U r our gift.

Type O Negative - Love You To Death

Yes!! This is us gothic chicks love song. It's so beautiful.
I back this hard
Justin Chancellor bassist for Tool. That's his Bass "solo". Just an Amazing musician. As they all are.
Thank you for posting.
🎶🎼😎🎼🎶
To add to my previous comment because I can’t help myself and the lyrics are cool; here is a stanza that follows the sequence:
Black
Then (0+1)
white are (1+1)
All I see (1+2)
In my infancy (2+3)
Red and yellow then came to be (3+4)
Reaching out to me (2+3)
Lets me see (1+2)
NEVER listen to Tool without HEADPHONES ! You´ll sooooooo much of what makes the Music so great ! Out of this you dis a good job :)
Y'all are an adorable couple. Love watching y'all. Great song. Great reaction.
Damn 3 years ahead of the curve. Such a great song and band. Glad I saw them live - more Tool please! I'm going to see if you did any Beastie Boys for shits and giggles. Completely opposite but just as legendary
I just heard this song for the first time a couple of days ago and wow. They are definitely musical geniuses. I am 65 and was taken in by that FUNKY bass and the drums. Then the voice and guitar hit. They are unique. Not everyone would be able to get them, but dang they are cold. And I sure believe you got the meaning of the song. I got the same message. Cheers
Very cool to say that listening to a new song is like opening a gift on Christmas. I like that 😁💜
Deftones - Digital Bath

I’ve been trying to get them to react to these 2 for the past Month now. If they ever get to these I’ll start pushing the other one. I know they’ll like these songs. I Hope they get to them soon!!!!
