    I'll choose the Protone based solely on the music choice used during each review, because as we all know the musical score clearly has everything to do with the quality of each helmet.

    I love my Synthe helmet. You forget it is on your head that is my biggest compliment. Hot or Cold weather it's great.

    I'm surprised you didn't reference the aero-helmet testing your American counterparts did. I was considering the Protone for a little while. I tried it on in a shop and it seemed to work fine. But after trying on the non-MIPS Synthe, I went with the Synthe. It was way more comfortable and the sunglasses holder is perfect. Very happy with my purchase.

    Synthe just looks cool

  • @rosscads

    I own both helmets and like the reviewer I prefer the Protone for its fit. As with other Kask helmets I have owned the Protone sits lower on your head. This gives it a more comfortable feel and also a smaller appearance.
    I do like the MIPS however and wish it were an option on the Protone.

    I've had the unfortunate experience of being saved by my helmet(s) twice and both times they were Giros so I'll be a customer of theirs for life. Got a Synthe before they had the MIPS version and I'm very happy and I'll be looking to pick up at MIPS version when I can.

    • @B-Rad-K
      @B-Rad-K 8 лет назад

      +Alasdair Sun From what I've found MIPS is a bit of a gimmick. In tests it does help but that's because the helmets are more rigidly held in place during testing compared to on your head while riding; this along with the fact we have a slip plane built into our head, the scalp, I see MIPS as an unecessary upcharge. At least that's what I get out of this article: www.bhsi.org/mips.htm

      Try Lazer. Advanced Rollsys is the best retention system I've used. The pressure is even around the head (great for in-between sizes like yourself) unlike other helmets that just push your head towards the front of the helmet. Also, adjustable straps for under the ears. I don't get why companies like Kask and Spesh leave that out.

    Can you comment about the shape of the two helmets?
    Coming from a motorcycle background, helmets are usually described as either round or long/oval to fit different head shapes. Is that the case for bicycle helmets?

    • @SiopaoSauc3
      @SiopaoSauc3 7 лет назад

      I only know of one helmet company (Kabuto) that talks about head shape. They tout theirs as an ideal fit for Asian heads.

    • @donandnanelmore8278
      @donandnanelmore8278 7 лет назад +1

      I have an oval head and have a $600 motorcycle helmet that doesn't fit quite right--not tight enough on the sides. My new Giro Synthe with Mips seems to fit very well. My impression is that the Mips contracts as you spin the dial and forms to fit your head. I think it should work on any shape head.

    I watched this video then bought Kask Protone, I returned it back the same day. Fixed V straps are too short, and since they're fixed they cant be adjusted to not rub the ear. Retention system on the back of the helmet sits right in the area where temple tips of sunglasses are, and pushes sunglasses off my head. Also, in hands it feels like a $30 helmet. That kind of plastic feels cheap.

  • @dineshnadar5214
    @dineshnadar5214 7 лет назад +1

    Had used both the helmets ... And i would prefer the kask any day ... They are lightweight and you won't feel like you wearing them. Giro on the other hand looks great but very uncomfortable and it lacks the cushioning ... Feels like a cheap plastic cap on your head.

    Lots of reasonably well thought out design in high end helmets these days... but the prices are eye watering.
    I have first hand knowledge of one top cycling shoe brand's cost per unit out of China versus their retail price... $300+ shoes that cost $45 to manufacture. These helmets absolutely have to cost fractions of that... but are still marked up to $300+. We've got to be talking about 800%+ markup on these things ;)

    • @JofArnoldOther
      @JofArnoldOther 8 лет назад +4

      Add: R&D, retailers margins, distribution, marketing. Would like to see what's left over for profit. I'm betting about 10%-20% if shoes are anything to go by, based on my experience.

      Tuna
      Considering that it won't be safety rated and will most likely get you killed from either TBI or spinal injuries due to a lack of any technology for safety, pretty big difference.
      To try and achieve the same weight and shape of the real Protone, they're going to skip out on any decent materials.
      Use AliExpress for sunglasses and socks, not for the stuff you're 'trusting' to save your life.

      +Cristian Itsirc The US prices are absolutely correct. Discrepancies vs other currencies boil down to regional/logistical differences. Don't nitpick what you don't understand.

    • @cristianitsirc6830
      @cristianitsirc6830 8 лет назад +6

      +yoog oook, so one costs 175£ or 300$ and the other one costs 225 £ or 270$. Yep, sounds legit.

    • @kidsafe
      @kidsafe 8 лет назад +6

      +Cristian Itsirc Yes. Giro's an American company, and it is also the largest helmet brand in the US. Domestic brands are almost always cheaper than imports. Kask is an Italian brand that has only been available in the US for about a year. It should not surprise to anyone that the UK gets them a bit cheaper than the US.

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  8 лет назад +7

      +Cristian Itsirc Those are the correct prices. Remember Giro are a US company, Kask are Italian. Like +yoog says, it's not just a straight-exchange rate conversion.

    • @kidsafe
      @kidsafe 8 лет назад +2

      Even a few months ago, US retailers had trouble keeping Kask helmets in stock. There wasn't high demand, just extremely low supply.

    I know that every accident is different. But after suffering 2 concussions, I'm for sure never buying a non-MIPS helmet ever again. In my experience they do offer more protection than helmets without extra safety measures. Especially spherical MIPS.

    I had bought a different helmet on Amazon at the beginning of this summer for my big headed daughter to wear while bicycling and scootering. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx0ipcYkXV-2YCp_cBN3HLfzR_OoD0HQYx Well it was WAY too big and not adjustable at all. Previously we had really expensive but adjustable helmets from the local bike store and I didn't really want to pay $50 again for another helmet. I searched and was fairly sure from the reviews that this helmet was what I was looking for- and it was! The pads inside are comfortable, the rim in front provides a bit of shade, but most of all for me there is the dial adjuster in the back which allows for a really secure fit on my daughters head. It seems like it will fit for a few years too which makes me even happier! She loves the pattern and I might end up buying another one for her twin sister (who has a much smaller head!)I definitely recommend this helmet. My daughter is 5 but has a big head. Her twin sister could fit in this one as well but it's a bit big.

    both of them looks really really uncomfortabel for all people with long hair. Most of all the helmets are really bad at this. did anyone know how good the MIPS work when you mount something heavy like a ligth or camera on the helmet, do the helmet move with that weigth by bumps and sprints?

      Pummelo, I bought the original model Giro in the early 1980s and I think I paid $85. $85 then is probably $1,000 now LOL. It is JUST styrofoam with a nylon fabric cover. However, at the time I thought it was the most comfortable helmet I had tried. I just tried to get new pads for it, but Giro doesn't make any. The Giro distributor told a local shop to give me 20% off a new one. I chose a Synthe with Mips. Trying it on in the shop, if felt very comfortable. Haven't tried it while riding as I just ordered a new bike and it hasn't arrived yet.
