The First Microsoft Surface was WEIRD

  • The Microsoft Surface RT launched in 2012 with Windows 8 RT with almost no support for third party apps but it's hard to argue it wasn't far ahead of it's time thanks to it's ARM based Nvidia Tegra processor. Probably a little TOO ahead for its' own good...

      Absolutely yes
      Windows 8 style user interface would be very suitable for the touchscreen and controller based device because of how simplistic the UI design was, not to mention the large, meaty buttons make it easier to press with touchscreen.
      Heck, even the Start Screen on Windows 8 itself is already similar to the menu screen of the most modern game console and smart TV nowadays, so it could be as well be implemented as a built in game launcher baked into Windows 11 (If Microsoft decided to go with that idea for the Windows based handheld gaming PC in the future)

    • @lukedavis436
      @lukedavis436 9 месяцев назад +5

      I kinda liked the interface even on my daily driver which I'm still kinda forced to use today with 8.1, the idea of just typing the program name is very helpful

      This is a controversial take… But I actually enjoyed Win 8 and 8.1. And even Windows Phone 8, had a Nokia Lumia 520. Really enjoyed that phone as well. A shame devs didn’t take to it.

    • @username-mb2qh
      @username-mb2qh 9 месяцев назад +5

      Honestly Windows 8 could’ve avoided the controversy if they just added an option for a start menu from the beginning.
      I generally don’t use start much anyway so it didn’t really bother me and I thought the start screen looked cool but that was people’s main gripe with Windows 8. I personally did really like this OS tho. I think it’s a real shame Windows 11 killed off live tiles and arguably forced even more tablet stuff onto desktop users with its oversized UI elements everywhere.

    The folio kb was trash and the lack of apps sucked for a college kid who wanted to play games but it was a really awesome form factor device for bringing in and out of class for taking notes and doing school work on. Definitely had a very solid little thing.

  • @lanerj

    It’s even weirder, that keyboard I believe is a pro keyboard, the one that came with the RT was a big felt touch surface with no buttons, even the keyboard was just touch sensitive felt and it was AWFUL. Also surprised that one doesn’t have all of the paint flaking off like they seem to do.

    I had the first Surface RT and it’s still one of my favorite devices. I knew exactly what I bought it for and it served that purpose very well for three years. I was sad when Microsoft ditched the Nvidia Tegra processor for an Intel Atom and gave up on Windows RT.
    I feel like most people just didn’t understand the RT, which led to its eventual downfall.

    I've still got one. I fired it up the other day but it needed a windows repair which I've done loads of times on windows machines but this needs Windows RT to get going and apparently even if I got it going there's hardly anything that will run now on 32bit with an ARM processor. I've seen people put win10 on them but then the Surface still won't let you do much...even browsing the net is slower than dial-up. I was going to put it in my kitchen for recipes and link it to my bluetooth speaker to play music but I reckon that would be too much excitement for this. It is a nice design but too small for a dinner tray so I've put it back with my obsolete tech that I keep "just in case"
