the funny thing is, everyone owns a copy of photoshop cs2, it is the one that they had to legally give put for free due to a lawsuit from them shutting down the licence authentication servers for cs2
Them giving you a way to install and run the software with an universal serial key doesn't mean you legally own it or that they're giving the software away.
The answer isn't exactly clear. Some sources say that CS2 became free in 2013 because it was no longer supported and old. Some sources say that it didn't technically become free, and the distributed license was only meant for people who owned the software previously after the activation servers were shut down. Adobe never really gave their own words of it.
3:30 This is actually a PCMCIA slot (PC Card). Expresscard is either thinner than PCMCIA cards (34mm) or the same thickness (54 mm) with a cutout at the back. PCMCIA was the first and primary version for PC cards through the 90's, up until around 2007, when Expresscard became more common.
I just want to let you know, that it was a pleasure to watch you review this tablet. This exact year, while finishing my studies, I found this exact tablet completely disassembled and partialy broken... That is to say it didn't stop me from making a Frankenstein out of it. I fixed it and made it work and while I did not have a pen to use it, weirdly enough, a friend lend me a pen from a samsung s9 fe tablet and it did work, so it is compatible with modern wacom pens. Sadly, I had to leave the tablet on the class I found it on... Again just a pleasure to relive this experience, It was such a great device, thank you for uploading this
I own two of these tablets, A 1 GHz and a 1.2 GHz model and the docking station for it. They are really neat devices and are especially useful for running software that doesn't work correctly on anything higher than Windows XP while using little room. My 1.2 GHz unit I upgraded to its max of 2 GBs of memory, There is an internal SODIMM slot which has 256 mbs of ram installed but it requires taking the tablet apart. Additionally I used an M.2 SATA to IDE adapter which makes it quite snappy. Genuinely they are neat tablets for me to toy around with. Also, id recommend if you do open up the tablet, its a bit of a pain in the rear but you should probably redo the thermal paste for the CPU and chipset. There is official HP documentation on full disassembly and service of this tablet floating about which I have a copy of.
That stylus was a rollercoaster ride - I initially thought it was a tiny little trackball, then laughed out loud when it popped out and I thought it was a wack-ass joystick, then went "aww that's boring" when you showed it was just a stylus
I just found out that Toughpads exist. And they seem to be pretty much this. With the bulk being from padding instead of just being chonky. But pretty much the same. And hecking expensive even used.
I never heard someone pronounce Wacom as "way-com" instead of "wah-com" haha Pretty interesting to see XP in higher DPI, it's definitely unusual and looks weird at some places I'd be interested in knowing the specs of this device, if there's a way to upgrade its internals to max out its specs and installing a Linux distro with LXDE, I believe it could be usable in 2024! Aside from that, great video as always :]
Fun fact: New Samsung Android tablets come with an S-Pen which is all done with Wacom technology. So a modern Samsung tablet is very similar to how this operates, minus the thick pen. Been using my Samsung tablet as my drawing tablet now.
The TC1100 pen and Samsung S-Pens are compatible. Same with other tablet PCs that use Wacom Penabled technology. I have a vid on my channel where I try it out with a TC1100 and Tab S8.
Really cool video. I've really been enjoying your content since the Lumia vid. I used a Surface Pro 4 for a time and loved to scribble my notes on it, but I didn't anticipate how the writing recognition would be so good already in 2004. Keep up the good work!
I had forgotten about these amazing tablet pcs. I had wanted one back when I was younger and obsessed with Windows pen input. I hope I can find one of these for sale in my country as I do need a “laptop” and this would be the perfect one for me.
A quirk I remember when I watched the vid: Whenever you set a PNG as Wallpaper in XP the redrawing of the desktop gets extremely slow, the fix is to convert the wallpaper to bmp and set that
Well, [the video from the closed tab playing,] that's the result from the messy modern browsers architecture of being split into multiple processes: from the UI perspective the tab was closed, but it wasn't.
It's honestly kinda amazing how in such a short time we went from that, to surface pro's (which I tend to like for travelling), but then not quite so much has had to change since then
The connector in the back was for a desktop dock that also included a bay for a Floppy, optical disk drive or extra hard drive. Docking the computer without the keyboard attached looks like its impossible the dock sticks fully through that little cutout in the keyboard. Kind of crazy. It was the HP DC911A PC Docking Station for TC1000/TC1100
Microsoft tablet PC was amazing. You could run full Photoshop and have a portable drawing tablet back in the early 2000s. It was clunky, but it worked. You have no idea how revolutionary this was and it took *years* before Apple even launched iPad in 2010. Windows tablet PCs and their manufacturing partners came out as early as 2000 or 2001 with tablet PC features being integrated natively into Windows XP. It's hard not to be a fanboy about this when many art people at the time thought you needed a Mac to do professional design work when Microsoft had tablet PC
The hole in the keyboard is for the docking station port. You can dock the tablet into the docking station with the keyboard attached, folded on the back. I have the tablet and the dock for it, and it's quite a pretty looking thing.
A boss in my old company wanted these badly so we got 2 units, with keyboard and everything, it was nice to use except when you couple a mid 2000 laptop hdd with Symantec endpoint protection and altiris agent you basically cripple the unit. Other stuff was that one of the device got fried, not a problem with a carepack onsite but the tech had to do 3 exits because he could not resolve the problem, last time he changed even the case and that got the unit fixed.
the music visualizations are still in windows 10 if you use the windows media player, there just kind of hidden. When playing a song click the the "now playing" button in the bottom right and then right click and you can select the visualizations and even download more microsoft web site if you dig in the settings a bit
I'd really like one of those HPs as it would be ideal for use as a decent drawing device amongst other things. It would certainly get some interest at the Pub, too. I'd max out the RAM (will it take a 1GB module?) - might be good for a fairly lightweight Linux installation. Second best: just get a Wacom tablet I guess. 🤷♂
I really like how old computers had these ports and connectors, I had always been curious about different peripherals we could plug into them... But unfortunately the tech these days, they hardly give you two ports 😞
I got one of these refurbished from staples around 10 years ago. Not sure how they were still selling these probably got them from 3rd party liquidation/e-waste stations. "This tail bit that sticks out and does nothing." 1). It lets the screen rotate out to be facing out without requiring an expensive/complex joint that can still carry the keyboard signal. 2). It would probably be prone to falling backwards during normal use if you were to lean the screen back very much at all if the screen were mounted at the very back end.
This computer would be highly compatible with "Windows XP Pen Edition," a specialized version of "Win XP", designed for compact tablet computers. This edition demonstrated enhanced capabilities in managing battery life and background processes, while also incorporating a range of tools optimized for touch and pen usage. However, based on the video demonstration provided by "Frokfrdk," it appears that the device in question may not be running the Pen Edition. This is primarily due to the observed challenges faced by the user in manipulating windows programs and targeting smaller objects within the graphical user interface (GUI). The Pen Edition typically features a more user-friendly GUI specifically tailored for devices with touch and pen capabilities, akin to the tablet mode available in Windows 10 and 11.
