How To Get PERFECT Board Seams W/ A Track Saw

- In this video I show you how to use a track saw like a portable joiner to create a perfect seam between two boards. In this particular case I am joining two full sheets of plywood together and want that gap to be invisible in the finished product. This trick easily translates to different sized pieces from slabs, to doors, and everything in between.

Excellent tip! I ended up doing the same thing, when working my first workbench a few weeks ago. Perfectly straight edge!
Very clever trick! Even if the gap is a bit wider than your saws kerf in places, you could still do it, then push the two sides together and do it again. Cheers!
Thanks for showing this! Like you stated, I was “ on the fence”.....well, you knocked my ass firmly onto the side where I research and buy one!
My motto, “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good enough.” Or. “Good enough for government work.” Great tips.
Agreed.. it's all about context..
chevyimp I was just joking. In this case it’s best to have a tight seam. Much better finished product.
If you were to do this on malamine faced board one cut would show break out but there is a way around it ! You have to overlap the boards by say half inch and support the top board then put your track on the top board and cut through both boards in a single pass . The overlap offcut acts as a splinter guard this way .
Hello Chris! Really great meeting you last night! Awesome tip! It must be awesome having a 8x10 workbench!!! 😃👍. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks man!! Keep in touch and come hang out at the shop one of these days!!
Great tip - thanks!
Now that's a great trick, thanks!
Great tip, thanks for sharing. I just ordered my Makita track saw today!
I just stack the sheets on top of each other and trim a kerfs thickness off and now they will match perfectly even if your cut isnt 90° square.
Thanks so much man. I have a track saw and I'm going to do this today on two tables
I just installed some vinyl railings on the stairs to the front of my house. I had to split one of the vinyl post sleeves in order to cover the 2x4 that was already bolted into the brick on the front of the house. The track saw was incredibly handy to use since my table saw was in my basement and since i could just clamp the track right to the work, i didnt have to worry about the piece jumping around on me when I made the cut on the back side of the sleeve. Mine is the corded makita one but you can get cheaper brands now for under $200.... They are incredible tools.
Great tip!
Nice one!
Great tip, thanks for sharing
Great tip, thank you!
Awesome trick, never seen that before
Great idea...
Crap where were you a year ago when I was putting up my shop walls and I even have a track saw lol. Thanks for the share great tip
Finally, a Makita guy!
Wish I had known this when I installed my butcher block countertops for the corners.
love my makita track saw. just replaced my big track because it was bowed. I'm hoping it's straight now. Unboxing today. But I was wondering, for those type of joints, wouldn't scarfing be better. It's a bit more time-consuming, but I believe it's a stronger joint.
Thanks for sharing Chris. Just discovered this vid as I'm currently trying to solve a similar problem --> Trying to join a couple of very long oak boards for a table top and not feeling comfortable at my jointer doing this operation. Which blade do you recommend doing this? I´ve got a Festool panther blade on my Makita (using this for ripping all the time), but not sure if it leaves a glue-ready/seamless joint. Any suggestions?
Now you just have to carry out an 8' x 8' sheet... 😱😂
Just like book matching veneer, except the kerf removes the need to overlap (which would still be helpful if chipout is a risk?)
Great video sir, i to have this same tracksaw and it's really one of the best additions to my tool arsenal, I don't bring my tablesaw to the job site any more the tracksaw does everything the tablesaw does only cordless. Is your guide rail or track two 55" joined together or do you have the 118"? I was going to buy the 118" last night till i got to check out it totaled $ 225.00 for the track, free shipping then $ 299.00 for handling !!! Sorry i'm not forking over $ 500.00 to have some one put it in a box to ship.
👍👍👍
Enjoy the video will that work on pallet boards I make serving trays clocks also just subscribed to your Channel
Great video. Quick question, do you think this would work on 2 hardwood boards? Cheers.
Absolutely, I do it on maple and oak, but the blades gotta be sharp!
Nice trick! How would you rate the Makita track saw overall? I'm hesitating between the Bosch and Makita.
I have had nothing but good luck with the makita, I will say if you are going to invest in a track saw I recommend going cordless for a little extra money. Not having a cord has been essential to this tools usefulness.
I'm curious of you have purchased your tracksaw. If so, which did you end up purchasing? I am looking at purchasing makita, bosch or possibly festool depending on people's thoughts.
Your feedback will be helpful.
Mafell makes the best tracksaws.
@@harrygirgin9093 i haven't gotten around to getting one yet. I've decided to save up to get a lathe instead. I did a weekend training on how to work at a lathe and it really got me hooked
Buy a Festool. Amazing piece of kit, expensive but the usability and workmanship is fantastic. Rarely had a tool which I am really looking forward to use even when stressed with jobs, because I know the result will be perfect every time.
And what is the trick?
Dude..... what!?
You're joining two full sheets of plywood? Why?
Saw this by someone else, I tried it, and...no go for me. I must be doing it wrong.
what project requires joining two sheet of plywood. am i the only one thats trying to figure this out🤯🤣
This project was a 8’x8’ shadow box for a picture frame for an artist
@@MakeEverything nice. thx for answering. i just got my makita track saw today so ill keep this trick in the back pocket for that one day some day.😉
I was wondering the same thing.
Joining plywood edges is probably a rare thing, but the same principle applies for more common applications.
I bought plans from Woodglut and did it very quickly.
