KTO, you need to read about the 1982 Dangerfield, TX high school defense. They've been tagged as the greatest defense on all levels of football by ESPN and their story is remarkable.
I remember that team. I was in high school in Dallas at the time. Dangerfield is a small town about an hour and half northeast of Dallas. That team was so dominant that when I read the title for this video that's who I thought of, the 1982 Daingerfield team. Unlike these 77 Falcons, Daingerfield's offense was great. They scored 631 points in 16 games. That's a healthy 39.4 points per game avg. They blew everyone away even in all the playoff rounds on their way to the 3A State championship. But it was the defense that set the tone for that team with with 14 shutouts in 16 games, including all the playoffs and the last 13 games in a row. In fact, THE DEFENSE NEVER GAVE UP A POINT ALL SEASON!!! The eight points Daingerfield gave up that year were a safety and an interception run back for a touchdown in the second game of the season.
Rolland Lawrence is from my hometown and taught at my school; now he's retired but still goes to local gyms and plays pickup basketball with us! He's a really great guy, and had a great NFL career.
I'm from Georgia.I was 14 in '77 and can remember the total frustration with this team! We had a good QB but the offensive scheme and play calling was horrible!

Love the footage! I don't know where you got it all. The segue about Glanville could have been skipped, but the rest of the video was incredible. The offense was held to less than 10 points SIX times that season--what a shame!

@@solascriptura-e7t actually I think that year that Von Miller had close to 20 sacks was actually 2012 with Peyton Manning at quarterback not 2011 with Tim Tebow
Thank you for this Video. If the Falcons 77 Defense met the William Andrews early 80’s offense they would have dominated their way to a ring. Also the fact the offense wasn’t even good enough to give this defense a proper rest kind of makes it even more exceptional.
I appreciate all the work you put into these videos, KTO. I love the old NFL videos from the 70s and earlier, and am glad to see other people taking an interest in them as well.
Great points. That does seem like the '85 Bears. And this is just after the '76 Steelers, who were arguably the best defense until the Falcons. Good call! Kudos for being a fan of this game and its history
Not only the '77 falcons gave birth to the 46 defense, but it is said the Gritz Blitz forced Don Coryell to invent a way to alleviate pressure on the pocket and take advantage of the empty field: the air coryell offense
Starting in 1978, the NFL has been changing the rules in order to make passing the ball more efficient. O-lineman can now open their hands and extend their arms. DBs can no longer touch a receiver after five yards. Those rules were not in place in 1977. The Grits Blitz defense may have ushered in their own downfall by being so good that the NFL had to change the rules to make it easier for offenses. And the NFL has continued to change the rules to make passing more efficient. One could argue that the Seahawks' Legion of Boom was the best defense ever simply because they played in an era of pass friendly rules, pass dominant offenses, and super-efficient QBs and still managed to be dominant.
Excellent point. That legion of boom defense during their 2 year Super Bowl run defeated Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers and were a historically controversial and/or bad play call away from likely defeating Tom Brady. They had four guys that are most likely going to the Hall of Fame (Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Bobby Wagner) Yeah I would say they are on the Mount Rushmore of all time NFL defenses.
You should predict what would have happened if Sean Taylor did not die from the break in. Also explain about him in the video as well. I thing this is an amazing topic.

This allowed putting 8-9 guys in the box extremely effective because receivers couldn't get down field.

Being a die hard Falcons fan since this year 1977, I can attest that up until the 1998 Super Bowl team, the Falcons never could find the O/D balance they needed to sustain success. That and the former owners, The Smiths, didn't want to spend the money to bring any big time talent here. Which is why Deion left in 1993 (all be it he didn't want to leave) bc the Smiths wouldn't pay him to stay. It wasn't until current owner, Arthur Blank became the owner have the Falcons sustained some level of success. But back then, we either had the seller Defense and the Offense sucked, or vice versa. We even had Dallas on the ropes in the 1980 divisional round, and had them all it beat until Danny White threw a desperation 45 yard rainbow TD pass that crushed us and ultimately won the game for Dallas who went on to play the Eagles in the NFC Championship game. Falcons fans from back then have even said that had Bartkowski had an O line, then he would've set passing records that even Matt Ryan would've still been chasing up to when he was traded last off-season.
The Falcons had some decent offensive players back then:, TE Jim Mitchell was a beast, WR Ken Burrows was decent on the long ball, Cannonball Butler at running back, and Bob Berry at QB.
Some Blue Dude AHHHH they played in a different league.... The Paul Brown got himself a team but NFL didn't let him in so he began his own league..... You go to the playoffs like never falcons are pretty much in there every year and since Blank ownership top five most wins in nfl so you see the ring on the horizon for them coming especially in this paradoy league when they get one it’s kinda like they had shoulda had two. Do the bucs owners write the same amounts on their checks as Arthur?
That last tidbit about the 77 Falcons being a one year wonder set off a bell in my mind. Could their statistical dominance of that year be attributed to a weak schedule? So I checked Pro Football Reference and sure enough. According to Simple Rating System, which accounts for strength of opposition, the Falcons weren't even the best defense in the league that season (2nd to Denver's Orange Crush), let alone all time. On paper they were impressive, but they didn't really play anybody special offensively. Presumably they played against better offenses in the surrounding seasons, so they looked a lot more ordinary. The Bears and the Ravens teams mentioned in this video were in fact the best defenses in the league according to SRS, so they each have a much better case in the best ever argument.
Captain Spartan 04 Yes but in terms of the playoffs even though Brady has lost 9 times he has also won 26 playoff games. He's on another level after the regular season ends.
Yup, my Falcons are that trash. So because of the '71 & '72 Dolphins, '77 Falcons and this last Super Bowl the 2017 Falcons will go 19-0. The football Gods owe us for all the shit they've put us through. lol
KTO We’ve been as bad or worse than the current Browns. And we didn’t have back-to-back winning seasons until 2010 & 2011... Our electric QB went to prison, our coach quit in the middle of my first season as an actual fan, our best player on our first SB team got arrested the day before the game. We were gifted the best defense of all time and they barely get credit because our offense was one of the worst all time? Give me a fucking break. The Vikings have been to four SB. We went to our second SB after the Panthers. The Browns have an NFL Championship....
Thank you for sharing! If only that defense could have had an offense that averaged 20 pts. per game...who knows how far they might have gone? Such a shame...
Not really, when you send 8-9 guys constantly and no one picked up on slowing "The Gritz Blitz" until later on in 1978, all that pressure every down forced a ton of turnovers. I'm not knocking them at all they set the record for fewest points in a 14 game season, trumping mighty Minnesota, Pittsburgh, and Los Angeles with room to spare. To be honest, I can only think of Claude Humphrey from the defense since Tommy Nobis retired after 1976.
Kto you’ve grown so much dude! I remember when you only had like 2k subs. You got a day one subscriber right here. Happy to see how far you’ve come and I know you’ll continue to grow in the future. That’s what consistency does
I met Rolland "Bay" Lawrence on a golf course in Franklin, Pennsylvania. Little did I know he has the all time interception record for the falcons. My grandma used to pick him up from the YMCA from time to time
You should do a video of young Tom Brady and the patriots vs older Tom Brady and the patriots like for example the patriots team that beat the rams in the super bowl vs the pats that beat the falcons or something like that
Coolidge Owens stats are for losers I do the eye test. Baltimore's defense was great but tell me what great quarterback did they play during the season. Last time I checked the 2002 Buccaneers had to play good quarterbacks and good running backs that year. The bucs also led the league in interceptions they were number one in yardage and they had way more defensive touchdowns. Also Tampa Bay's performance in the playoffs was more dominant the Buccaneers shut down one of the best offenses in the league in the 49ers held them to no touchdowns in that playoff game then they go on the road shut down another good offense in the Philadelphia Eagles, then they just destroy the Raiders in the Super Bowl. And before you say well they knew the Raiders plays. My answer to you will be well wouldn't the Raiders have known the Buccaneers plays considering they were both running similar type offense. The only difference was Tampa Bay ran the ball more while that year in 2002 the Raiders use the past a lot more. Remember when Jon Gruden was the coach of the Raiders in 2000 and 2001 the Raiders or the number one rushing team in the league those two years.
Do Tommy Nobis. My great uncle. Biggest Hof snub ever. 5 pro bowls in ten years. Falcons first player. Retired in 76 after knee injury. Please do it. He deserves it. (He died recently)
I have them at #6 because in the 77 season, league offenses had come to an all time low, averaging way less points and yards per game compared to 76 or 78. This made about half of the defenses that played that year, in today's terms, legendary.
2000 Ravens were the best defense, they had to play in an era where the players were better than the guys the 85 Bears played. Plus the Bears had fucking sweetness we had Trent Dildo so... 😂😂
Travis Stanley think the 2002 bucs has to be one of the top. Bucs did it for nearly 12 years straight, plus stopping the high powered 49ners Raiders, and Micheal Vick twice in his prime when nobody eles knew how to stop mike Vick, The only team he didn't run over badly was the Tampa defense. 2000 ravens was amazing to but I look at more of the longevity Tampa Bay had. IT not being a 1 year wonder defense . Hence why the name Tampa 2 was born
The combined records of the teams the '77 Falcons beat was 40-58. They only had three meetings with top 10 offenses (Rams twice: 1-1, Patriots once: 1-0). They were good, but you can't really compare them to those Steelers teams of the 70's.
Great vid by the way. I'll take you one further, Buddy Ryan's 46 defense was a modern rendition of Greasy Neale's Eagle defense during their championship years in the late 40"s. Who unseated Greasy Neale's impossible Eagle defense? Paul Brown of the Cleveland Browns. Who played on that team at cornerback? Don Shula, later coach of the only team to beat the 85 Bears. Ryan was a good coach but he did make a living by copying and claiming the innovations for himself. Why Shula's win over them on MNF was so shocking, just like he did it when playing for Paul Brown.

Do the bucs owners write the same amounts on their checks as Arthur?
This a brilliant video!!
Well done and thanks for highlighting this defense
KTO do you like the cavs and Indians? and are you from Cleveland or Akron or somewhere near?
He’s from Idaho
I love how that d-linemen at 6:50 scooped the fumble and threw it to a teammate bc he didn’t trust himself to not get run down😂
That last tidbit about the 77 Falcons being a one year wonder set off a bell in my mind.

Love the background music. Great vid KTK props to you.
KTO could you do a do a video on which team you think could take down the Patriots?
Football QB'Z it's raiders. they started the patriots dynasty now they must end it.
Captain Spartan 04 As long as Brady as there, all of you guys can try to beat them, but will always come up with a Loss
Neel MM I'm pretty sure the patriots have lost before lol
Neel MM hmm tell that to the 15’ Denver Broncos or Eli Manning
Captain Spartan 04 Yes but in terms of the playoffs even though Brady has lost 9 times he has also won 26 playoff games. He's on another level after the regular season ends.
Excited to see the video you make once the new season gets rolling
Yup, my Falcons are that trash. So because of the '71 & '72 Dolphins, '77 Falcons and this last Super Bowl the 2017 Falcons will go 19-0. The football Gods owe us for all the shit they've put us through. lol
Breezy try being a browns fan
Breezy try being a Vikings fan
Alan Ruben try being a panthers fan
KTO We’ve been as bad or worse than the current Browns. And we didn’t have back-to-back winning seasons until 2010 & 2011... Our electric QB went to prison, our coach quit in the middle of my first season as an actual fan, our best player on our first SB team got arrested the day before the game. We were gifted the best defense of all time and they barely get credit because our offense was one of the worst all time? Give me a fucking break. The Vikings have been to four SB. We went to our second SB after the Panthers. The Browns have an NFL Championship....
Breezy making to 4 Super Bowls makes it even worse because you get so close
Thank you for sharing! If only that defense could have had an offense that averaged 20 pts. per game...who knows how far they might have gone? Such a shame...
Hello KTO have a nice day everyone

You put so much work into your videos you deserve way more subscribers hopefully you blow up soon
7-7 how. Defense can't do all the work. The offense played like a little league team. 2 pro bowlers, the whole Defense should've been to the pro bowl
if I was Jerry Glanville I would sue Buddy Ryan for using my defensive scheme plus I didn't get no credit not fair.
@@j0rdan172 well...the NFL is a copycat league.
That’s what consistency does
What if the 77 falcons def had the 21 century offence?
They would go 15-1 only loss of course Dan Marino
@@jetwhistle715 dan wasn't there either year
Great video kto! Been a fan since you had 2k subscribers. Keep up the great work!
What if Sean Taylor never died
@Bryce Carr: Why do you wonder ?
I met Rolland "Bay" Lawrence on a golf course in Franklin, Pennsylvania. Little did I know he has the all time interception record for the falcons. My grandma used to pick him up from the YMCA from time to time
You should do a video of young Tom Brady and the patriots vs older Tom Brady and the patriots like for example the patriots team that beat the rams in the super bowl vs the pats that beat the falcons or something like that
Thatx Guyx
04 > 07 > 14 > 16 > 03 > 11 > 01
switch 07 and 04
This is so well made! I've been so impressed by you lately
What about me Ashley ? 🤔
I actually think 2002 Tampa Bay defense is better that 2000 Ravens.
Damn, I just realized I had an uncle who played with the Bucs that year in 77. Definitely going to ask him if he remembers this game.
What did he say
what if Derek Carr didn't get injured
Do Tommy Nobis. My great uncle. Biggest Hof snub ever. 5 pro bowls in ten years. Falcons first player. Retired in 76 after knee injury. Please do it. He deserves it. (He died recently)
He also made the stop on Joe namath in the 1965 Orange bowl
grits blitz best defense ever
I have them at #6 because in the 77 season, league offenses had come to an all time low, averaging way less points and yards per game compared to 76 or 78. This made about half of the defenses that played that year, in today's terms, legendary.
2000 Ravens were the best defense, they had to play in an era where the players were better than the guys the 85 Bears played. Plus the Bears had fucking sweetness we had Trent Dildo so... 😂😂
Travis Stanley LMAO Trent Dildo! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Travis Stanley Did you not see how horrendous the 77 Falcons offense was I'm sure it would've been a blessing to them if they had Trent Dilfer
Travis Stanley What does sweetness have to do with the defense?
Trent Dildo always tried to go deep
The most underrated pro football defence I ever saw. The last 14 game season in the NFL
There never has or will be a better Defense than the Steelers Defense 🖤💛
Thanks for making this video. Much appreciated.
the 70s steelers duh
BOSS PARRISH 35 exactlyyyyyy
@ one fluke season by the falcons against a weak schedule....vs nfl dominance by the steelers four almost the entire 70s.....
The most rigged games in Nfl history.
