seeing Etrian Odyssey get some representation makes me soooo so happy :')
as an EO fan I started with EO Untold: The Millennium Girl, which is a great place to start if you want a more concrete story. EO Untold 2 has a more polished story and mapping system, so it's also pretty great to start there too.
for classic EO gameplay where you make most of the story in your head, EO4 is great for those seeking a brutal challenge and EO5/EOV is great if you want more customization both visually and with your skillset.
If you wanna go deeper into the EO series, I'd recommend going back to Etrian Odyssey 3 after finishing at least a game or two. A big part of the community (for what I've seen) seems to favor this game over the rest. (The OST is a good reason to as well, the nighttime city OST is pure fire!!! The best channels to find Etrian music is Banim and TheFabulousTroupe on youtube!)
EO Nexus is the cap on the series for when you feel ready as it's practically a love letter to its own series, bringing back classes and systems from the previous games in the series.
Unfortunately, I haven't tried the Etrian Odyssey Mystery Dungeon entries yet but I do plan on getting around to it someday soon. :)

it also doesn't help that the first callback labyrinth is based on EO4, which is one of the more brutal games in the series :'^)

The Bravely duology on 3DS are my favorite non-SMT games on the system. If you have any kind of attraction to turn-based battles or job/class systems, both are sure to scratch the itch!
For anyone who is curious, Bravely Second is a direct sequel to Bravely Default, so you kind of need to play them in order.
Bravely Default 2 (the Switch entry) is set in a completely new world with no links to the 3DS games, so it would be fine to start there if you want.
The Etrian games I found to be a mixed bag, I really enjoy the systems but the lack of story can make it hard to stay motivated sometimes.
That said, Persona Q was a blast to play through for me, being a cross between Persona style storytelling and Etrian gameplay. If I ever finish Persona 5, I suspect PQ2 to be in contention for my favorite 3DS game ever (currently, it's Devil Survivor: Overclocked).

    • @HallowedBeThyGame
      @HallowedBeThyGame  2 года назад +1

That's great to know, thanks for sharing. I am also a major fan of the smt games on 3ds. Overclocked is a quality game to love and have at #1!

Bravely Default in particular was amazing for me. (I haven't finished Bravely Second yet, I can't remember why I set it aside... new game, maybe...? Even so, I will protect Magnolia with my life if need be. ^^ )
I personally found the lack of a dedicated story in Etrian Odyssey to be a blessing in disguise. In Etrian Odyssey IV, I started a solo-Landsknecht game (don't sleep on Bandage, it's a fantastic skill and enables the Landsknecht to get through the first area!). Well, I knew Bandage wouldn't last me the game, so I 'recruited' another party member that my Landsknecht 'met' in the first area... then the first Labyrinth, they met two more party members along the way...
It evolved into a whole 'guild storyline', one I never actually wrote down, but I liked the flavor of developing the otherwise-unremarkable characters as the story progressed. It was a fun ride, all the way through the post-game and its final dungeon. (For anyone who may be curious, my final team was: Fortress, Landsknecht and Imperial in the front line, Medic and Arcanist in the back line. I especially found the Arcanist's Poison to be frightfully powerful...!)
Then again, I like coming up with stories of my own, so having that measure of creative freedom just made the game all the more engaging for me. Being able to enjoy the game's RPG elements was, of course, wonderful too. ^^

Fantastic picks! Bravely Default, Ever Oasis, Planet Robobot etc are several of my top picks as well.
One game I didn't see mentioned here is Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology. It's my favorite 3DS game and my favorite JRPG of all time, it took the spot from Chrono Trigger. And if you know Chrono Trigger, you know what incredible praise it is to say a game is better than CT.
Apart from that, I would recommend Level 5s catalog of very small games. Games like Liberation Maiden, a mecha shooter and Crimson Shroud, a tabletop RPG sim that are about 5 hours long each and very replayable. Fantastic value for money, just like Sadame.
Another game that I feel no one has heard of is Culdcept Revolt. It is a combination between Magic The Gathering and Monopoly, where you move across a board against 3 opponents and take spaces by placing your creatures on them and fight your opponent's creatures or pay their tolls. First to a certain amount of mana (money) and passing a Gate (passing go) wins. It is a ridiculously unique concept and sadly the series seemed to die with the 3DS but it went out on one fantastic game.
Lastly, I swear this is the last one.
    7th Dragon III Code VFD
I bought it for the name alone and I was not at all disappointed. It's a JRPG where your entire party is basically created by yourself and is thus super customizable. With a time travel plot that has you take on several dragons to prevent the awakening of the 7th Dragon and the end of the world.

Etrian Odyssey is a series I adore.
Personally, I believe that the best way to begin is with 4 for all newcomers. Mostly because its balance is the one that tilts in favor of the player the most of the series while still being an absolutely brutal time, but always fair. There's also the fact that it being the first developed for the 3DS lineup, it does lack some QoL options that later entries added which makes returning to this game admittedly hard, mainly quick movement in the map which does make making this game a later entry a rather stiff one. EO4 is considered the easiest in the series, but this is just in context of the series. It's a certified Nintendo Hard game that won't hold your hand and won't hesitate to kick your ass.
The Untold entries are remakes of the first and second games back from the original DS, and feature a "Classic" and a "Story" mode, in which in Classic you're allowed to play the game as a traditional EO in which you make your own custom characters from all around the classes and play mostly in a hands-off fashion, while Story Mode features a preset party with characters who have dialogue throughout the game and feature a more fleshed out narrative. The thing with the Story Modes is that they feature unique classes for your sort of "Main Character" that is exclusive to them, the Highlander for Untold 1, and the Fafnir Knight for Untold 2.
And oh boy, there's a lot of contention with these unique classes. See, Untold 1's Highlander is serviceable enough in that he's mostly harmless balance-wise, so Classic Mode isn't affected by his existence, but Untold 2's Fafnir Knight is a whole other can of worms, in which his insane damage output and the devs pushing for people to actually play story mode resulted in the the whole game being re-balanced around the Fafnir, making it so the whole game has a bad case of boss HP bloat. Mechanically, Untold 2 is not a bad game at the end of the day, but it does do some questionable things in which Classic Mode enthusiasts feel rightfully cheated out.
Etrian Odyssey 5 is by far the hardest entry in the series it's actually incredible. For this game, the developers decided to NOT re-use any assets that made development for U1 and U2 so smooth since they had a lot of them ready from 4, and along the way they decided to up the difficulty. 5 suffers a lot from puzzle random encounter hell, in which enemy formations have a lot of synergy to them, that though makes fighting them engaging, can also make it infuriating in the long run when you need to treat every single encounter in the whole game with way too much care (for my personal tastes) and often rather punishing when you don't even know what you're getting into and accidentally did something that triggered the foe's trap card. Its bosses and map design can also border on the ridiculous. In my opinion, 5 is the most hardcore.
Nexus meanwhile is a celebration of the whole series that brings classes and dungeons from every single game in the series, even including those from EO3, which will likely never get the Untold treatment, and THEN some more with also original content. This game is for the _long_ haul, and I do mean it, because it features way more content than any other game in the series by sheer volume of things to explore. It's because of this same thing that it can easily lead to burnout, as its pace can get really tortuous for a newcomer. Still a fantastic game!

I’m having such a dilemma with these eShops, because I want to be reasonable with how many games I buy, but I also want to get every and all games that look interesting 😖.
As for games, the Etrian Odyssey series is… a bit strange for me. Most of the games have a demo, and the first demo I played was for Untold: The Millennium Girl, and I absolutely loved the game and bought it… but when I tried the demos for the other games, they just didn’t really click with me, and I don’t really know why. I will say, though, that because of EO:U, I have now figured out that I’m a fan of first-person dungeon crawlers 😁.
Also, I’m not sure if you’ve mentioned it before, but StellaGlow is an absolute gem of a game. That’s been one of the major 3DS games I’ve been sinking my time into, and I’m on the final chapter (I think). The combat reminds me of Disgaea, and the cast is so varied and filled with great characters.
Another big franchise I’d like to mention is all the Fire Emblem games. I started the series with the mobile game, then got Three Houses, and became a fan of the series. As time went on, I wanted to play more of the games, so I looked to the 3DS. Over the past few months, I’ve been able to get physical copies of Awakening (which I beat), Fates: Conquest (which I’m working on now), and Echoes (which I haven’t started). These games are so good, and I can absolutely see why people praise them. (Also, for other FE fans, the Wii U has Blazing Blade, Sacred Stones, and New Mystery of the Emblem).
Lastly, I wanted to mention the Legend of Dark Witch series, which I consider my “hidden gem franchise”. The games are very much like Mega Man (my favorite series), and each game has an upgrade system, and hidden collectibles to find, as well as of course big bad bosses that, upon defeat, you receive their powers. Really fun games, and relatively cheap, too.
Oops, this response got too long again 😅. Just wanted to throw out my input on these few game series that I think are definitely worth picking up on 3DS.

I don't know if you've discussed them before, but I adore the 2 Project X-Zone games. They are an RPG crossover of Sega, Capcom and Bandai Namco. They mostly contain each company's big fighting game franchises, but feature some others like Yakuza and Devil May Cry. There are plenty of other characters from each company's big series
Combat has a tactical map like fire emblem and in battle you can combo very basic command inputs for some pretty flashy stuff.

Reminder: the eshop will "die" for many people by end of August NOT March next year, because by then there will no way to fund your 3DS/wiiu account and you will end up looking into the eshop's bed inside an ICU.
Even if you were rich and filled 1000$ before that date, we don't know if there will be ever any other sales between Sept 2022 and March 2023
Worst yet, there is that risk of a game getting delisted out of no where:
Projext X zone games are gone completely years ago becasue there was no buyer
Bloody Fire Emblem Fates of all things came out few days ago and stated the game will delist a month in advance - Feb 2023-.
Etrian Mystery Dungeon was removed from the eshop because fug me... but you can still buy the DLC and all other Atlus games so I honestly don't know why they did this
What I am getting at: if you love your 3DS, want to get as much as possible and don't want to be a pirate for a reason or another .... you have one month left to act

Etrian Odyssey games have always been subject to some nasty resell values and the entire franchise is exclusive to the DS and 3DS, so once the eshop goes down it'll be pretty much impossible to play any of the games without piracy or dropping $100-$300 on any given title. EO4 is a pretty good starting point since it has a lot of beginner friendly aspects and kinda eases you into some of the harder aspects of the game. But I remember reading message boards of people quitting because they kept getting destroyed by the third boss. EOU is a good starting point too since its a remake of 1 but the grimoire system can get crazy and I do think a lot of people miss a lot of what they can do with it on their first playthrough

If they ever make a remake of this game I hope that they either increase skill slots or let us swapping party members out of combat without having to return back to oasis

Awesome list! I've added a couple of titles to my want list! I was going to recommend Fantasy Life but you've already mentioned it! What a fantastic game! I know that it came first on the DS and I don't remember if you mentioned it in your previous video but Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology (I think that's the title on 3DS) is a phenomenal game! I have both Bravely Collector's Edition but I haven't played either of them... which is why I'm in no hurry to get Bravely Default 2 on the Switch! Great video and keep up the good work!

I never heard of Sadame. Looks cool. I'll have to check that out. Fantasy Life is definitely one of my favorites on the 3ds. I have the physical copy, but there is also the DLC that expands the game which will be lost if you don't get it before the eshop closes. I don't know why I never got Ever Oasis. Physical copies are looking expensive. eShop might be my best bet for that one, too.

    - 7th Dragon III Code VFD. Unfortunately this one is already getting expensive.
    - All of the 3DS Shin Megami Tensei titles, but especially Soul Hackers as it'll probably spike in price as soon as the sequel comes out.
    - The Legend of Legacy
    - Fire Emblem Fates Revelation, since the only other way you can get it on a game cart is by getting the Special Edition, and that's *extremely* expensive.

For EO, I prefer starting with EO Untold 1, just because it gives you the option of going through with their predefined party, so it's a good entry p oint for people who might not be used to building their own. You obtain stickers as you finish puzzles which you can use to create collages. Yea, maybe not the most interesting thing but that's absolutely my kind of thing. Only downside is that the mega picross mode puzzles are exactly the same as normal picross mode. They are fun to solve of course but I'd have liked more stickers as a reward or something. Nano assault reminds me of the Invader Zim where he takes over Dib's body and Gaz uses a nano machine to fight him.

If anyone wants to play a Fire Emblem game, get Fates and the Revelations dlc because Revelations was only available physically in the special edition. It's an entire third route for Fates that you won't be able to play without downloading it by next year.

Cool, I picked up Sadame. I'll have to crack into it after work, but it gives me something to look forward to during the IRL load time that is being an adult with a job. Lol
Thanks for featuring it. I had never heard of this game till now. I love that you featured FF Explorers too. I picked up a copy not long ago and have been having a lot of fun with it. Like you I haven't delved into the Bravely Default series yet either, but I really want to. As far as my own reccomendations go, I'd say Tales of the Abyss is a great JRPG for 3ds. The other games I think don't get enough love are a couple of horror games called Dementium The Ward and it's sequel. For horror game fans, the DS had slim pickings, but these had me addicted. I read that the developers wanted to make a Silent Hill game and didn't get to pitch it to Konami, or maybe the story was that they were just heavily inspired by SH and made their own I.P. It's been a few years since I read the interview about it. If anyone wants to share the names of some horror games they know of on DS, I'd appreciate it.
Anyway, I love these videos and hope to try the Etrian games before the eshop closes too and some of the more obscure FF games that haven't been ported to other consoles. Have a great day everyone and thanks for the video!

So happy you enjoyed it! And thanks for sharing some quality recommendations! The Dementium games look right up my alley too. I’m sad I haven’t gotten a chance to play them yet, thanks for sharing those and reminding me to try and pickup Tales of Abyss. Looks like a game I’d have a blast with. Thanks a ton for watching and hope you have an excellent week!

I am a big fan of CRUSH3D as a puzzle game. I think it is on the eShop, though I have the physical version.
I grabbed Sadama per your recommendation and I dig it so far, though I am disappointed at the lack of 3D.

Loved Ever Oasis so underrated and would love to see a sequel on the Switch.
I'm playing Stella Glow ATM and that's a real treat.
FF Explorers hurts as that's the missing piece I want in my small collection.
P.s. I enjoyed playing as a cook best in Fantasy Life

I feel like a video like this makes the most sense with games that were eShop exclusives. If a game had a physical release then losing the eShop isn't really a big deal for that game. I love Kirby but there's no need to go racing to the eShop to get a game I might still find at Walmart.

Wish I could get a large assortment of these games before it closes but do to my budget it’s just not possible. 😢 will have to try to pick some games up physically when I can. Wish Nintendo would do a huge discount sale before they close the shop.

What are some eshop exclusives that either take heavy advantage of the 3DS hardware, or are highly unlikely to be ported? I don't care if I'll be able to get a game physically or find a port elsewhere, I'm looking for stuff I can ONLY play on 3DS that I can ONLY get through the eshop
