Mary Skelter is fantastic yeah. The 1st and 2nd games are re-tellings from each other but told on completely opposite sides and actually plays in reverse of one another (1st game you start with Alice and can end with Gretel, in 2 you start with Gretel and end on Alice), Finale takes place after the 2 games and you can find a mix of character forms from both, basically timelines converging, but overall just a more intricate game since you are handling 3 parties at the same time while efficiently exploring (swapping between them with the shoulder buttons). Death End did interest me since it has the same art as Mark Skelter, i did try to play but couldn't get into them after a while, certainly not bad but the tone switch up is very sudden, might retry later.
Fun list. I’m playing through death end re quest now after having it sit in my collection for a few years. Another mature rated rpg is Haven, a co-op style game that’s pretty good
Have played Seven Pirates H. Can say without a shadow of a doubt that it is VERY MUCH a game that you play for the fanservice rather than for any sort of deep or complex narrative. It's just a silly little romp of an RPG that doesn't take itself seriously and I honestly love it for that.
Akiba’s Trip Undead and Undressed I owned on PS4 for a while but I was glad to see it ported to the Nintendo Switch. I especially love the Launch Edition in its box full of physical extras and more stuff you can get from that and even the fact that the game came with all the original DLC itself plus extra content[not counting the Paid Costume DLC to dress the girls in outfits from the first game]. But you still get more content than say that Jujutsu Kaisen arena fighter which launched at full price.
I just started Persona 5 Royals. As someone with a dark past, the first area hit hard but in a good way. I think these sort of games need to happen more. These subjects need to be discussed more in a way that helps people through the painful memories. I was surprised it was M rated, though.
P5R started out on a high note. They really went about the subject matter very professionally. They didn't understate what the characters were going through, they didn't underplay it, it was really well done. It really was a high point in bringing mature topics to people and doing it well. However the rest of the game ultimately turned me off. The more I played the game I just felt... wrong. I felt like every choice I made was just the main character using everyone around him to just get himself stronger. Like regardless of the choice you're either gaslighting someone or being an Alpha Male or an Incel. I seriously felt dirty playing the game, despite the gameplay being fun. It just seriously felt not only the gameplay, but the dialogue, was just telling you to go out there and use everyone for whatever they worth, and there was nothing wrong with that. Hell, you can convince your teacher, who doesn't want to have a relationship with you because it's wrong, to have a relationship with you. And you get rewarded for it. And it just comes across that almost every interaction you have with someone is this way. I just felt dirtier and dirtier the more I played the game. I played a lot of the SMT games in the past, including P3, P4, SMT3, SMT4, and several spin offs... They were fantastic games and really enjoyed them for their dark tones and storylines, just none of them have turned me away like this game did.
Thanks for the list, because of you I have more JRPGs on my list to get, I especially can't wait to try SMTV: Vengeance, I love the Persona games and can't believe I've never even tried SMT before
Other titles I recommend is Persona 3 and Persona 4 Golden I know limited run did a physical copy of a while back but they are available on eShop and definitely Nier Automata that is definitely a must have in your game collection!😮 the combat style is similar to Bayonetta but the story is phenomenal as well as the music soundtrack.
Omega Labyrinth Life. Just looking at the art and title art you can tell why it is a mature game. Half the game got cut on PS4 and as such it was rebranded as just Labyrinth Life. Moero Chronicles and Moero Chronicles H basically reskins of Mary Skelter removing the horror and adding in tons more fanservice. Maid Of The Dead, a Vampire Survivors RPG clone where you control a group of maids surviving a zombie apocalypse. Very fanservice heavy but also a lot of fun to play.
Dead or School is a great game! It's even a fairly easy game to platinum! Royal and Strikers are games on my shortlist to replay before getting to Tactica! Undernaughts is a decent game, I beat it and was happy with that. Maybe I'll play that post-game dungeon one day.
Akiba’s strips basis is just freaking hilarious! I love that it doesn’t take itself serious! I haven’t got a chance to dive in but I’ve heard nothing but good things for a great cheesy playthrough. SMT 5 is still on my list to get to, right after Nocturne. (Planning to get to Nocturne soon!) Fan Service and chesticles aside, Seven Pirates aesthetics, artwork and more silly tones are drawing me it! It looks great! Ug! KAMOSHIDA!!! 😡 lol Moving on….AHHH NOCTURNE! Looks like I spoke too soon! Hahaha I’m so I’m dude!!!! Yet another stellar list! You’re knocking it out of the park lately my brother! You know me, #HallowedBeThyGamers! 🌕🐺
Oh man! The PS2 mega collossus! I'm SO HYPED for you man. It really is just the bedrock of my favorite battle system in turn based games. But yeah so many over the top games haha. Thanks so much for watching man
As someone who's only just gotten into Jrpgs after never being interested in them except dark souls as I didn't realise it was one at the time due to my huge ignorance of Jrpgs I found these short reviews more informative than most reviews I've actually watched while looking for games to get started with thankyou because there's a few more I'll be Adding to my list after this. Also I initially started with Shin megami 5 and oh my god what an amazing game! The soundtrack, the combat and the setting and are all right up my alley! Aside from the few on this list I also have my sights set on Fate/samurai. Great video!
Im certain you've mentioned it before, but the Moero games (Chronicle and Crystal) are also incredibly fun if you dig the first person dungeon crawler stuff. And they're in the same series/universe as Seven Pirates H.
I’ve been loving your channel man. I’m getting really into turned based RPG’s lately that I missed out on as a kid/ teen; so this is the perfect video for me. Your passion for RPG’s reigns through and through. Thank you so much for your recommendations. 😎🎮💪🔥
If Persona 4 is getting mentioned, then Persona 3 must also be talked about as well. But naturally Persona 5 was already covered, and that's got the best gameplay with Royal even upgrading the story further beyond 4's so I guess he wanted to cover the best of the series without too much overlap in gameplay :3
Honestly probably just saying anything with Megami Tensei in the title is probably enough, they have gone hard into the mature themes since day 1 before Shin Megami Tensei (third game) even came out.
@@illyahrthebard3303 Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden got released on PS4 and Switch in the last twelve months by Limited Run Games. Nier: Automata - Game of the YorHa Edition was released by Square Enix around the same time as Persona 5 Royal.
Mary skelter and death end request are amazing series. Love them so much and was well worth importing the physical copies of as they didn’t release in NZ (some of them didn’t even show up on the digital store). Ones that you missed was the labyrinths of refrain coven of darkness and it’s sequel . Both are amazing incredibly long dungeon crawlers in which basic story is you a witch that uses Puppets to explore giant labyrinths in search of stuff for the story. You are able to fully customise the puppets from the classes available and set them with different skills they can learn. You also get what’s called “pacts” which allow you to have heaps of party members in them fighting at the same time and each one is different with some having special skills or being focused on a certain style (like a tank one). You can also reincarnate the characters into other classes to gain extra stats. The story for both gets pretty dark and there’s a couple of mini lewd fanservice moments mixed in
I don't know many peopel who know the Death End Re;Quest series and the Mary Skelter series, or any Idea Factory games, So it's nice to see and know someone showing this game and the company their love
Moero Crystal, and Moero Chronical, even though it’s not an RPG it’s a kind of mature shmup called Caladrius Blaze. Most of the Idea Factory Compile Heart games come to mind. The Neptunia games, Dragon Star Varnier, Azure Lane Crosswave.
Mary Skelter, Death End Re;Quest, The Moero series, Labrinth of Refrain series, The Omega Labrinth - all good dungeon crawlers similar to Etrian Odyssey with slightly more mature themes. Omega Labyrinth plays more like the mystery dungeon series, though
I bought death re;quest on steam, amazing game. That is a truly hidden gem. I’m so into the story, I’ve played 8 hours straight!!! Thanks for the video
2:19 - These games got an anime too, lol. Whole thing is bizarre, but entertaining. 14:15 - Wait... somebody else likes Mary Skelter!? O.o Holy jeez, I thought it was just me X'D I need to get back to playing these XD
Akiba's Trip Undead & Undressed is stupid fun. It's worth noting that video games and movies have a separate rating scale so a mature rated video game isn't the same thing as a mature rated movie. If you had to make an equivalent a mature video game is actually more equivalent to an R rated movie....though there is an important distinction in that mature rated video games cannot contain nudity while R rated movies can.
Persona 5 royal and Persona 5 strikers are a must but bc the stroy and gameplay are really good. I been playing royal and strikers to have fun and used to the stroy. I highly recommend Persona 3 and 5
Mary Skelter doesn't get as much love as it deserves I absolutely loved the series. Actually replaying it right now. The Moero hyper/chronicle games are also stupid fun if you like dungeon crawlers
Shout out for Mary Skelter! Such a great game, the story is brutal but compelling, the game play is very challenging, and the characters become very endearing. If you do plan on playing them, do note the reason they included the original Mary Skelter with it's sequel is because they are oddly meant to be played in reverse order. You are supposed to beat Mary 2 then beat the original, this unlocks a "true ending" which is only available in this version.
Idea Factory is great their Fairy Fencer games are fire. Mary Skelter is awesome because of each of the characters has multiple different classes they can change into it puts a different spin on 1st person dungeon crawlers.
Reason for Persona 5, royal M rating is due actually to the very first palace in the game. Specifically the attempted suey side of an NPC. Not to mention the implied scandalous assault from an adult against minors. The game is highly stylized so on first glance you would guess no big deal. But even the enemies are umm phallic shaped, amongst other things. But both Persona 5 and Royal are phenomenal. I have strikers I just haven’t played it yet (working on hundred percenting Royal on the switch). Fun list though, great video.
Love Persona 5! remember always, if life has got you down, the system is corrupt, do what you can and collectively we will make sure that LIFE WILL CHANGE!
Ooooo, Entering the den of the Risqué! 😂❤ Lovely video Ren! There's also Moero Crystal R which was left out (Otton is a common character with this one and Seven Pirates 😅) Want a 'mature' mature game, trt Disco Elysium and Planescape Torment 😮❤ It's one of the greats Hey Ren, question time!!🎉🎉🎉 Who's your Favourite 'mature' character in video games? ~Ara ara~😂
Death end request is one of my faves. Great story and great turn based battle system. These games are not easy by no means and I think if you like JRPG they are must plays. Third game coming to Japan later this year and I’m gonna get day one. Mary Skelter is awesome too! Really fun dungeon crawler. My fave compile heat series is Neptunia series but it’s not Mature rated. I think Neptunia is fun and cute and has funny characters!
'Bigger bazoombas equal bigger power' I laughed way more than I should have at that..... This list was beautiful though! I'd add Omega Labyrinth. That was quite uh.....interesting
Death end request is also getting a new game. I played through the first and watched the second, the voice acting is good, the world building, dialogue amd characters were fascinating but also odd in a unique way. The opening scenes and death scenes are quite brutal, the voice acting is painfully good for them.
Great videos as always and welcome back again! 👏👏👏 Always curious of the tracks you use! What's the soundtrack for the one playing in the background when showing Akiba's Trip! Thank you! Super fan of your channel ❤❤
+1 SMT V battle system is best turn based ever. Ofc play it on hard and it will force you to learn CD patterns, boss turn count on abilities, using items etc and plan action usage variants 5 moves ahead :P first turns based that force me to think about combat like logic puzzle or otherwise there is no hope for win :P
Personally regarding Mary Skelter, I can't help but think that these games possibly inspired the methods used for Metroid Dread. I know I've been studying them for design ideas at least.
Personally my favorite rating tag is PEGI's 16 (yes, my country uses PEGI). I like that because it means it is dark, but not too much. It is like ESRB T and M rating combination. Examples of the games are: Persona and SMT, Most of FF after 12, all Tales games from Xillia and onward, Valkiriya Chronicles, etc.
People who hate on all Idea Factory/Compile Heart games, seem to not realize they made Dokapon Kingdom, a game near free of fanservice (especially with the censoring in the rerelease of the game), a board game party videogame that's also an RPG. The Wii entry in the franchise got a rerelease with online multiplayer, even in story mode. It's brutal though despite seeming to have battles decided by a "rock paper scissors" system. Your stats actually matter. You fail at a minigame in Mario Party, you just don't get a reward. You die in Dokapon, you're out of the game for 3 whole turns, and lose so much upon dying. If you surrender in battle, you're only out for 1 turn and what you lose is lessened, but battle is not the only way you can die in Dokapon, there are so many ways you can die in Dokapon, especially if the other players want to be toxic and target you to mug you of everything. Also, the end goal of the story mode is marrying the princess, but, you get a different ending if a girl character wins in the end.
Mary Skelter are fun, I've currently playing the 1st one as the DLC of 2 and I can testify they're fun, if only quite a bit of tedious for its grinding, but that's just me that I'm not a fan of grinding. The rest of the game is fun with a nice customization of the cast
My problem with Compile Heart/Idea Factory is that they always go for the same anime tropes and cliches, but the combat systems and gameplay loops that they make are always really fun
"And now we transition from SMT VV to what people who've never played a SMT game think SMT is, just minus Mara." That said, the early smt dungeon crawler aesthetic makes me want to play it.
If you haven't played it, you should totally play Labyrinth of Refrain. It's a first person dungeon crawler that truly earns its M rating. The game has a lot of complex systems on top of having incredibly dark themes. The third dungeon in particular almost made me throw up because they really nailed how to portray Filth/Septic Horror.
Since Dark Souls and the like count (JP developed games, even if they have more of a Western aesthetic and gameplay style), than the *Dragon's Dogma* games ought to at least get honourable mentions. They're both M rated games. Dragon's Dogma 2 is my 2024 GOTY. Dragon's Dogma 2 currently has a 2 hour free trial running on Steam, though I personally feel that's barely enough to get started (character creation and starter area stuff). It also has a 'mixed' rating on Steam right now, but that's mostly because people were (understandably) salty about microtransactions at launch (you really don't need them, but they really don't belong in a premium priced single player game), and performance issues in larger settlements, namely the cities (it's better now, but still not great, but gameplay out in the open world has always been just fine so it was never really that important IMO).
I kept missing the game titles which were only posted for 10-20 seconds so I looked at the chapters expecting them to be there but they weren't. I did find the game titles in the video summary but sadly they were not in the order that the video featured them in .. 😕
Super elated to see Persona 5 Royal on this list. I've been playing it elsewhere but have heard good things about the Switch version's performance, and the writing is phenomenal. When I first played Shin Megami Tensei IV (my introduction to MegaTen and thus Persona by extension) several years ago, I thought to myself, "This combat system is incredible, and this would be the best RPG ever if the story and characters had any effort to them and if the fanservice had more in-universe relevance (something about the Burroughs AI creeped me out)." Cue my introduction to Persona 5, which has some of the most believable character dialogue I've ever seen, to say nothing of its willingness to deal with difficult-yet-important real-world subjects such as (TW/CW) imbalances in power dynamics, attempted suicide, and child abuse, sexual and otherwise. I do think the story felt a bit front-loaded, with the first dungeon feeling horrifically important while the ones after that felt a bit more cliche by comparison, but the character interactions have absolutely been a service for the rest of the game, particularly with how you're constantly on a clock but the timekeeping system always feels fair.
do you need to play Death end 1 to play 2? I heard the first one is super super dialogue heavy, and I dont mind heavy dialogue but im already invested in Trails lol
The first game is really story heavy, like sometimes you spend more time learning about the world than battling. The loop tends to be... Find something out, go to the VR world and explore until you hit a invisible wall where you return to the real world to discuss what's going on which unlocks new parts of the map to explore in VR.
the second game DOES assume that you played the first one because of some twists. Like some characters from the first game do make appearances and have some plot relevance in the second.

I swear I've seen this video three times. Must be the thumbnail. You're always great with that.
Thanks for the list, because of you I have more JRPGs on my list to get, I especially can't wait to try SMTV: Vengeance, I love the Persona games and can't believe I've never even tried SMT before
Loved undernaughts labyrinth of yomi great pick 👍🏽
It's so good! Happy a fan is watching
Death end re;Quest is really a must-own for violent RPG fans in general, regardless of what platform you own.
I have not played Mary Skelter. But now I want to try it out!
I really wanted to get into Mary Skelter. But then I found that Mary Skelter Finale was banned in Australia :(
Omega Labyrinth Life.
Props for using the Large Map theme from SMT IVA
Yooo love the use of 7th dragon 3 code vdf ost in ur video such a great game and franchise with great music
I still need to play Seven Pirates H. Haven't touched it since the day I bought it.
whats the game in the thumbnail? artstyle looks like its from idea factory
edit: looks like shes from Mary Skelter Finale
Ngl seeing a video that list EVERY jrpg on Switch would be nice 😅
Im certain you've mentioned it before, but the Moero games (Chronicle and Crystal) are also incredibly fun if you dig the first person dungeon crawler stuff. And they're in the same series/universe as Seven Pirates H.
Amazing shoutout! Thanks 🙏
you're one of my fav rpg youtubers man, you talk about some of the craziest games ive never heard of 😂😂
Glad you like them!
Love your lists! Very unique
Thank you!
I’ve been loving your channel man. I’m getting really into turned based RPG’s lately that I missed out on as a kid/ teen; so this is the perfect video for me. Your passion for RPG’s reigns through and through. Thank you so much for your recommendations. 😎🎮💪🔥
Gosh thank you so much! I'm so happy to hear you are having fun too! It's a blast nerding out about these games with you all. Thanks for watching!
Persona 4 Golden & Nier Automata should be on the list
While I imagine him mentioning Persona 5 royal would be enough, I agree persona 4 golden and Neir automata would have been fine additions to the list.
Are they on Switch?
Hell, the whole DrakenNier series could get a video by themselves lol
The story for both gets pretty dark and there’s a couple of mini lewd fanservice moments mixed in
Great list and a few I really need to play for sure!
I appreciate it! Some of these are pretty bonkers 😂
I bought the Deaths End Request games earlier in the year. Love them
I don't know many peopel who know the Death End Re;Quest series and the Mary Skelter series, or any Idea Factory games, So it's nice to see and know someone showing this game and the company their love
Man forgot about Gun Gal as a franchise
Gal Gun 2 has a nude mod (for switch and pc) on gamebanana. Played it earlier this week, was mildly amused.
I bought death re;quest on steam, amazing game. That is a truly hidden gem. I’m so into the story, I’ve played 8 hours straight!!! Thanks for the video
Omega Labyrinth Life is filled with Seven Pirates style fan service but it has a smaller cast of characters that get more development.
2:19 - These games got an anime too, lol. Whole thing is bizarre, but entertaining.
14:15 - Wait... somebody else likes Mary Skelter!? O.o Holy jeez, I thought it was just me X'D I need to get back to playing these XD
I haven't finished it but Mery Skelter is SO SO GOOD. Highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it
Akiba's Trip Undead & Undressed is stupid fun.
So glad to see more love for the Mary Skelter Series!!!
Heck ya!
@@HallowedBeThyGame still annoyed that Mary Skelter 1 and 2 aren't on Consoles
Persona 5 royal and Persona 5 strikers are a must but bc the stroy and gameplay are really good. I been playing royal and strikers to have fun and used to the stroy. I highly recommend Persona 3 and 5
Rock on! Another strikers fan is watching!
Mary Skelter doesn't get as much love as it deserves I absolutely loved the series. Actually replaying it right now. The Moero hyper/chronicle games are also stupid fun if you like dungeon crawlers
Thanks for the recommendation, gonna have to check these out!
There's a lot of SMT and Persona on here...of course there is you can't go wrong with the Megaten games
Not sure if it's considered a JRPG, but have you tried Omega Life Labyrinth? That one is rated M and is kinda like Seven Pirates H
Great recommendation, playing now and lol game is deserving for part 2 of this series
Have you managed to unlock Z Mode yet? It's easier to achieve with a girl who is already big, but seeing it on smaller girls is amusing too 😁
Shout out for Mary Skelter!
I'm making sure I get these games. I need to add them into my JRPG collection.
There's also Moero Crystal R which was left out (Otton is a common character with this one and Seven Pirates 😅)
Want a 'mature' mature game, trt Disco Elysium and Planescape Torment 😮❤ It's one of the greats
Hey Ren, question time!!🎉🎉🎉
Who's your Favourite 'mature' character in video games? ~Ara ara~😂
I've played and got both platinum for the Death End games on the ps4. I highly recommend it.
Funny, Seven pirates was a game I picked up because i knew for a fact that it was gonna be one of those “Hard to find” games due to the “Plot” alone
Labyrinth of Refrain and Labyrinth of Galleria is missing of the list but they are very niche so its understandable.
Mary Skelter is quite fun. There are times where I have to bail out of the jail just to clear corruption if its starting to get really outta hand.
Oh i love Mary skelter , one of my all time favorit games is Mary skelter 2
didnt expect to see mary skelter on here ngl. I still own my special edition for the vita!
Another great video brother, thanks for putting it together :)
So happy you enjoyed it!
Great videos as always and welcome back again! 👏👏👏 Always curious of the tracks you use! What's the soundtrack for the one playing in the background when showing Akiba's Trip!
Thank you! Super fan of your channel ❤❤
Man thank you so much! Made my day! And that's from SMT V and it's called Nahobino theme.
@HallowedBeThyGame Thank you so much!! Anytime! I feel the passion and the way you describe the games just makes it very digestible and cozy! ❤️❤️
10:00 I’m pretty sure it’s because of the 1st actual boss involving Ann’s story.
Personally regarding Mary Skelter, I can't help but think that these games possibly inspired the methods used for Metroid Dread. I know I've been studying them for design ideas at least.
I own all of the physically. Good list.
Thanks!
Fun fact: PEGI 16 is ESRB's M equalent, where as PEGI 18 is ESRB's AO.
I've at least tried almost all of these. Death End Request (especially 2) is fantastic
And now Yakuza Kiwami's on the switch too
Not sure if it is considered a Jrpg but its M Rated and a must own for sure Redemption Reapers !!
Persona 5's M rating comes from the SA story beats, especially the heavily implied one in the first arc, as well as some of the demon designs.
This is the video I've been waiting for.
😎 hope you enjoy!
It also has a 'mixed' rating on Steam right now, but that's mostly because people were (understandably) salty about microtransactions at launch (you really don't need them, but they really don't belong in a premium priced single player game), and performance issues in larger settlements, namely the cities (it's better now, but still not great, but gameplay out in the open world has always been just fine so it was never really that important IMO).
glad you're back man
Thanks so much! Me too
I kept missing the game titles which were only posted for 10-20 seconds so I looked at the chapters expecting them to be there but they weren't. I did find the game titles in the video summary but sadly they were not in the order that the video featured them in .. 😕
Super elated to see Persona 5 Royal on this list. I've been playing it elsewhere but have heard good things about the Switch version's performance, and the writing is phenomenal. When I first played Shin Megami Tensei IV (my introduction to MegaTen and thus Persona by extension) several years ago, I thought to myself, "This combat system is incredible, and this would be the best RPG ever if the story and characters had any effort to them and if the fanservice had more in-universe relevance (something about the Burroughs AI creeped me out)."
Cue my introduction to Persona 5, which has some of the most believable character dialogue I've ever seen, to say nothing of its willingness to deal with difficult-yet-important real-world subjects such as (TW/CW) imbalances in power dynamics, attempted suicide, and child abuse, sexual and otherwise. I do think the story felt a bit front-loaded, with the first dungeon feeling horrifically important while the ones after that felt a bit more cliche by comparison, but the character interactions have absolutely been a service for the rest of the game, particularly with how you're constantly on a clock but the timekeeping system always feels fair.
your mixed metaphors are hilarious
do you need to play Death end 1 to play 2? I heard the first one is super super dialogue heavy, and I dont mind heavy dialogue but im already invested in Trails lol
The first game is really story heavy, like sometimes you spend more time learning about the world than battling. The loop tends to be... Find something out, go to the VR world and explore until you hit a invisible wall where you return to the real world to discuss what's going on which unlocks new parts of the map to explore in VR.
the second game DOES assume that you played the first one because of some twists. Like some characters from the first game do make appearances and have some plot relevance in the second.
