I don't think they're 'ignorant americans,' I'm from Scotland and I could probably name 3 or 4 states on a map, the only reason they don't know is simple, we are never really taught about it at school!
Is it even necessary for me to go into how the knowledge of the location of important/well known countries is NOT the same as knowing the location of smaller, irrelevant-to-anyone-outside-of-the-country-in-question states. Those two things are not directly comparable. What IS fair and actually makes sense is to ask Brits to label 5 countries in South America. Simple logic.

Before any morons say 'Ireland isn't British, it's not part of the British Isles'. Yes, it IS part of the British Isles. No, that does not make Ireland British / part of the UK. The British Isles is a geographical location, not a political one. There's a part of Canada called British Colombia. Does that make people living there British? NO. Does living in the British Isles automatically make you British? NO.

Also, think yourself lucky that you only have to learn them in one language. I had to learn all 32 counties in English and Irish as well as the four provinces in both languages.

The people appearing in these videos are not spectacular intellects, by and large, and in all fairness to her, she did know the answers. "Adequate job!" just doesn't seem like much of a compliment. :-)
But the thing is, it's NOT common knowledge, a lot of people can't even point out the most common countries. She knew right away and was the only person who got it right, she probably performed better than 90% of Americans would have.

`From an Irish perspective the term British Isles isn't recognised as it was created to impose British ownership over the island which is no more so it doesn't apply. I know you'll say it's just a geographical term but that's what it's become and Ireland would rather leave that and British rule behind.
As an Irish person I think we fought a little too hard for independence to allow the label of 'British isles' to be put on our country? The United Kingdom is the country made up of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The British Isles refers to the set of islands/countries to the north-west of Europe (UK, Ireland, Channel Islands), these islands are under no single governmental body like the others do, "British Isles" is solely a geographical term. Ireland IS part of the British Isles. So although you're an Irish person, you appear to be a mistaken one.
