Home Made cold plunge for under $700

  • I posted about a cold plunge I made from a 14.9 cu foot box freezer from Home Depot a few months back and wanted to give an update on how it’s going. I have included the original text from the original post so people don’t have to go searching for it if they want to build one themselves. It was about $650 all in with delivery and accessories which is quite a bit less than the $3,000 to $7000 units I was looking at on line. I can also get this colder than any of them and keep the temperature at close to freezing even in the heat of the Southern Californian summer. I could actually turn the water into a big block of ice if I wanted 😉
So I have been using it now every single day I have been home for months and it is amazing. Better than I ever could have imagined. So much easier than making ice and putting it in either my bath tub or cheap plastic plunge tanks. It is always between 35 and 37 degrees when ever I want to use it which makes it much easier to stay consistent. The other way I could only do it every other day because it took a time to make the ice.
I have now seen that the filters will keep the water clean for between 2 and 3 weeks before needing to change it which is pretty good. With the bath tub you drain the water every time and with a plastic plunge it’s every couple of days. So I am not wasting anywhere near as much water. I also got one of these water pumps ( amzn.to/3FT26vV ) which let’s me attach a hose and water my grass so I don’t actually waste the water anymore when I change it. It works perfectly and makes it super easy.
I tried to get an ozone generator to keep the water cleaner longer but they are hard to get in California because of regulations and apparently they can be a bit dangerous in small places. But changing the water every 2 to 3 weeks is no big deal and my grass needs the water anyway. I just turn the sprinklers off for a couple days to make up for it 😉
“People have been asking about the freezer I converted to an ice plunge. It was super simple and took less than 10 minutes of work. I bought a frigidaire 14.9 cu. ft box freezer from Home Depot and they delivered it to my house for free. 🙂 I then sealed all the seems inside using sikaflex 291 white marine sealant , including the drain plug. You have to seal that too or it will leak ( tinyurl.com/5f... ) I also put Flex Seal tape over the drain plug even after I used the sikaflex just to make sure ( tinyurl.com/52... ). I then used a wifi digital temperature controller ( tinyurl.com/mv... ) to keep the water from becoming a block of ice. I am keeping the water clean with two 120 gallon fish tank submergible filters ( tinyurl.com/5n... ). They won't keep it clean forever but will extend the cleaning time by weeks. I will give an update after I use it for a few months and see if there is a better solution. I don't want to use any chemicals or salt because I want to be able to use the water on my grass so I don't waste it when I need to change it. One important detail is when you buy an ice box freezer make sure it has plastic as the interior and it’s not metal. The metal will rust so plastic is the way to go. If you make one of these make sure you unplug it before you get in it, better to be safe than sorry and with it unplugged you don't have to worry about getting electrocuted.
Anyway, it's a super clean and nice looking solution compared to the $7,000 ice plunge solutions I was researching and you can get this as cold as you want even in the summer in Southern California.
One thing to know is it takes a long time to cool it down to freezing the first time and you may want to use ice to get it down to temperature faster for the first plunge. But after that it stays at temp perfectly.”

That's awesome man, thanks for the links for those filters. Aquarium filters - of course! Wim Hof promotes natural warm ups like calisthenics or working out like you mention to deal with that afterchill effect which is no joke. Oddly, warming up through any external heat source other than the sun feels weird and gives me stinging sensation on my skin temporarily. Natural warm ups also keep that "zen" thing going for a few hours.

Your garden looks the same as mine. I have an outdoor bath, that I usually just heat up and sit in at night in the winter, with a beer 👌 I’ve been going to a local spot (Currumbin Valley - Ground Bathhouse) and sitting in the infrared sauna and ice baths during the week. Been wondering how to do this at home.

Here in central NY I'm always amazed at how cold our tap water is. I just checked and our tap water is 45 degrees. Cold enough for an "ice" bath minus the ice. I just fill up my tub and have at it

you mentioned that your pain was caused by inflammation. You might look into the carnivore diet. I just started the carnivore diet a week ago and my ankle pain that I’ve had for a year is gone. I can’t imagine the pain that you must be going through after your crash. Don’t want to be a pusher and don’t know if you live that lifestyle or a vegan lifestyle, just thought I would say it. I’m glad you found something that helps.
