Your pump system works great. I ran it for 6 months before changing the water, and I didn't have to, just felt like the right time. The pump system was all I ran alongside the ozone,; I'll be adding the peroxide based on this video too
Yes, our goal is to let when you change your water, be up to you, not forced. I think you will find that adding peroxide is a great addition. That level dropping is like a 6th sense for your water starting to harbor microbes.
@@elyros6155 I don't follow. Use what product without the ozone and filter? To keep your water clean you need filtration and sanitation. Your body sheds 10's of thousands of dead skin cells, hair, mites, and all kinds of nasty stuff each time you get in the water.

Thank you for your ingenuity! I bought the complete filtration system and have a few questions before installing it. Did you seal the drain plug with JB Water Weld? I’m hesitant to seal it completely and am considering alternatives. Also, did you seal the top frame (where the top of the walls meets the plastic molding) with JB Water Weld? The top seems unnecessary since it won’t be underwater. My chest freezer has an aluminum interior, so I had to sand it, apply primer, and then add Pond Shield ($$$). Did you leave the white enamel as it was?
@@rupertogonzalez8815 I sealed the edges of the drain and the top trim with JBWW, and would recommend doing that. Yes, I left the white enamel for now. Eventually I will have to redo it and will probably fiberglass.
Great vid! Thanks for all this info! What do you think about using a water stabilizer like Stabilize by Ice Barrel? Would this sort of thing be used in conjunction with peroxide? Looking forward to purchasing your filter when I do my first Frigidaire build.
@@travislrogers I think those stabilizers just work to make smaller particles stick together, so they are easier to filter. With my system filtering at 5 micron and flowing like crazy, that really isn't needed.
This pump and filter system is fantastic. I only change my filter every 2-3 months and it’s been 6 months since I got my plunge up and running and see no reason to change water yet. Crystal clear and clean. I do run my ozone about 2 hours a day tho. 30min at a time 4 times a day evenly spaced out.
Great video, thanks for all the info in one place. You said you run ozone for 15min twice, is there any harm in running it longer, like if you run it 3 hours a day, is that bad in some way?
Thanks Terry! Probably not a lot of harm, in the short term anyway. It will put more ozone into the air around the plunge. Only an issue if it is inside. Also, any materials with less ozone resistance will age faster.
Really great content, thank you! Just ordered a Grizzly 450 cooler to switch out my 100 gallon Rubbermaid trough. Think your minimalist filtration system will work set on bottom with filter turned up as you suggest? It would be without ozone with the silicone hose attached to the venturi. Any suggestions would be appreciated 😊
@@APEX.86 I know the pump needs to be completely submerged under water during use, but does the filter/filter holder need to be completely submerged also? The filter/filter holder sticks out of the water about 3-4 inches in my setup due to needing to leave room for water displacement while plunging.
Great content and really informative. I plan on starting my build soon. I want to purchase your Apex filtration and pump set up but am confused as to which ozone generator to get? Everything I read says JED 303 is king but your website has a link to JED 003? What’s the difference. And is the 303 necessary over the 003 option. Also when the ozone isn’t running does it still suck in air through the Venturi?
The 003 and the 303 have the same ozone output. The 303 is at a higher price point because it has a weatherproof housing and integrated air pump. Since the APEX86 system has a functional venturi, you don't need the air pump and can save some money. Yes, the venturi will continuously inject air. This is a benefit in keeping the water saturated with oxygen which helps suppress anaerobic microbes.
@@APEX.86 okay that makes sense. No need for the pump because of the Venturi. And since it doesn’t have a water proof housing I can just buy a bigger electrical housing and mount the device inside with my Inkbird, power strips and timers.
I might be overthinking this, but is there a specific type of chlorine bleach you used? I have the Apex86 and JED 303, so want to mimic your set up and cleaning process as much as possible
This system is meant to drop into a plunge for submerged use. An external filtration loop will be quite a bit different in design. You can run it in an ice barrel, with the filter canister facing upwards, as long as you have a flat bottom for the pump to rest.
I ran with your setup for 6 months and had no issues. Just got back from a business trip and started seeing some murkiness. Figured it is a good time to replace the water, clean the pump and filter. What are you guys using to clean out your plunge when you replace the water?
I'd give it a thorough brushing before draining. Then once drained, I'd put 70% alcohol in a spray bottle and mist the whole interior, keeping it wetted for a good 10 minutes or so. That should be very effective at sterilizing all the surfaces, books and crannies.
It is much more than just a nozzle with an ozone port. It is a highly functional venturi, which does not significantly restrict flow. This lets you run a much simpler single flow path. Standard venturis are much too restrictive to run in this configuration.
Just got mine in service. Only issue I have is the electrical cord thickness keeps the chest freezer lid from closing well enough to seal. Is there a simple fix for this?
I’m running a grizzly 400 cooler which is 100 gallons. Noticed I started getting a little green after six months. Change the filter out and within a three week period. It’s green again just a light tint. I use 35% hydrogen peroxide usually a quarter of a cup Weekly. I did start using a stabilizer from Ice Barrel about two months before it started turning green. I’m six months in on this water and wondering if I have to drain it or if I can just shock it with hydrogen peroxide and use a half a cup or if I should use more at 35% ? Thank you also, should I change the filter again? It’s only a couple weeks old when I do this.
@@iChis23 I'm going to suggest the same things I suggest in the video: use test strips to keep peroxide at 100 PPM, soak the filter in a bleach solution every two weeks, scrub the walls and corners with a brush weekly.
@@APEX.86 you are soaking the filter and bleach even though using hydrogen peroxide? Do you do that so you don’t have to change the filter every once in a while? I ended up buying a five pack of them so I can swap the filter every month. Will definitely get the test strips.
@@iChis23 yes. Soaking in bleach every 2 weeks definitely prolongs the filter's useful life. But, it also helps your water health since the filter is a microbe breeding ground.

@@sigel69 yes, my water lasts over a year and still looks clear when I change it. I didn't pond shield because the factory white enamel can hold up for quite a while. I'm almost 3 years in with this freezer, and there are only a few small areas that have chipped off. Eventually I will probably fiberglass the interior.
