My 19 year old son watched Huberman (like all teenage boys apparently...ha ha) and he got an inexpensive portable cold plunge last Christmas and I started doing it, got addicted, and have done it daily all year. In the beginning I got the headaches and had to work up to 1 minute. It was winter so many days we had to break up the ice just to get in. I love it. I eventually spent $3k (which drove my wife crazy) to buy a better cold plunge with a chiller (ModTub) because adding ice everyday in the spring/summer/fall got old and expensive. It's now part of my daily routine. I do 5 minutes at 42 degrees every morning. That's my sweet spot. I get in right after waking up and come out feeling alive and ready to conquer the day. I arrive at work full of energy that lasts for hours...and the need for morning caffeine is gone.
Lake Michigan is free. Hoping that immersing every day starting in early August will gradually get me used to colder and colder temps, maybe even through the winter (if she doesn’t ice over). 🥶
You DO NOT need to go below fifty. There were formal studies showing the benefit occurs between 50 to 59 degrees. Going colder does not make it better. Also, there are variations depending on your body mass and age. Going to the very low temps is more for bragging than benefits.
Yup, completely for Ego and mental toughness if going into the 30s. I am at 55f for 15 minutes currently and will likely lower the temp over time to the high/mid 40s.
All of my back pain is gone. Been using it a month now and I feel like a complete different person. Almost like I’ve evolved from a poliwhirl to a Poliwrath
Most importantly be safe and listen of your body, bodyscan while in the water. Take time to build up to that point of cold. If you are just starting brand new just start taking room temperature showers starting at a temp you are comfortable with first and then build from there. Hypothermia is real and it will make cold pludges dangerous if you can't tell when to get out over time.
To help with warming up while in the water put focus on the cold and hot spots in the body and breath out, spread that warmth and you will know when you feel it.
Putting your face in cold water and massaging your face at the time helps the skin, closing the pores and tightening the skin…it’s all about circulation, I think a good massage gives similar results for the brain , releases hormones….
No, my neck crushes me if I don't take my head under. It tightens up, and I'm not wanting to get out when that happens. I do think it is a cold/hot thing
I've read no benefit below 50 many times - might all the from the same base source, but still.. You're not trying to get cold adapted. Rogan goes hard in everything, so this might be another example.
I'm an airline pilot and fly Hawaii a lot where any kind of cold is hard to come by- Face dunking changed my experience. I bring a collapsible folding plastic container- get ice- face dunking gives so many mental health benefits it's hard to describe
OK so first of all I got respect for this Andrew something tells me he’s not actually doing what he preaches I’ve heard him talk about thermal barrier and I totally get that but I have yet to find a video of him performing what he preaches about cold plunging I’ve personally been cold plunging for almost 2 months in 29°F water my highest being 35°F and there is absolutely nothing easy about sitting in it for three minutes whether or not you’re moving or sitting still not sure how I feel about this clip I may have to watch the whole interview hopefully I don’t sense a lot of bullshit in hindsight it’s definitely help me with muscle soreness from exercising every single day and most of all anxiety. What threw me off was when he mentioned his cold cold plunge temperature and how uncertain he was and how quick he was to talk about, oh I have another one that’s colder. Joe Rogan smelled blood here
His logic on longer plunges at a more moderate temperature is still sound, though. 50 degrees is definitely still cold enough to generate a physiological response. From the sounds of it, he's probably doing 8-10 minutes or more. My wife and I have been working our way down for a few months now, presently with the chiller set to 47 (although it does bounce around between 47-51 due to the chiller's configuration), and I still absolutely feel the results hours later.
Question, why does my lower leg hurt. Is it bad, I feel like my nerves or blood vessels are going to pop. If it wasn't for my legs it would have been a piece of cake
I'd check with your doctor and go warmer for a while- Do calf raises a lot- they're nicknamed your "lower body heart" because of the role they play in circulating blood through the entire lower body. The cardiovascular effect of cold is vasoconstriction - you must follow it with vasodilation through movement to get the benefits. Internally warm yourself. It can be hugely therapeutic for circulation issues. But if it's crazy painful- I'd get a good check up and labs- make sure you don't have anything else causing the circulation issue. Could anything form clots to diabetes. I wouldn't just accept the internet saying it's fine. It might be- I'd just make sure. In the meantime there's something called cold water marching that is very good for your lower leg circulation. It's exactly as it sounds- get in to Calf-knee depth and march slowly pulling one leg out then the other. This has been taught in massage schools for decades. Try it out- may help the legs and then the full plunges could go easier.
54 is too warm? Says who? Everything online says you get the benefits of a cold plunge with the temp being anywhere from 50-59°. Mine is usually between 52-54 and that’s plenty cold enough for me. Maybe after a while I’ll try to drop it down into the 40s. But ain’t no way I’m going to 34°. Low 50s is challenging enough for most people.
Got a cold plunge for Xmas and have used it 6 times since. I use it 5 days a week for 2m 15s a session and have felt incredible. Highly recommend.
What kind
@@Harry-rm5is a nurecover will be upgrading very soon
@Harry-rm5is a nurecover but wanted to see how much I enjoyed it before spending more money. I am now looking for a plunge with a chiller/heater.
Same! 3 min if it’s in the 30s, 4-6 in 40s… 5-7 x a week
That's frigging amazing, i would sure like to have one and use it consistently - just to give it a go
"why is it so warm?" 😂😂😂😂😂

Hey I've been thinking about this. Did you start? I live 7 minutes away from the lake too!!!
It’s awesome you live in that area, good luck!

I do it in the river but I live in Scotland so it’s cold enough

Hi Joe, I have arthritis in my neck, will cold baths help with that ?
No. - Joe
No, my neck crushes me if I don't take my head under. It tightens up, and I'm not wanting to get out when that happens. I do think it is a cold/hot thing
I turned 2 refrigerated water bubblers into a diy chiller system. Don’t know how cold it is but it’s chilly 🥶
If it’s cold enough for your body to really not want to be there, it’ll do! (That threshold may change over time)
i love it just get in and feel it feel the vibrations enrgy and the work out it gives you its not even that bad once your in it gets warm
It sounds really good!
Interesting, I don’t always submerge but my neck does get annoyingly cold so this could be why.
Look up glabrous regions
Always do what?

Just you veins contracting and sending blod back towards your hear to keep your central temp high. Even when it really hurts its fine.

“I’m colder than you in the mornings, HAH” 😂
Reason why it’s warmer cos he knows something u don’t
Nailed it! Rogan thinks he's flexing, dude's a total douchebag.
too may big words
yea seriously gotta be in the 30s
Wrong, Huberman has studies that show it needs to be 50 and for 11 minutes a week. Don't be ignorant like Joe Rogan.
Two adults talking absolute dribble
now that article about his poor behavior makes sense. not to be trusted, definitely not sincere. his response to the temp question. interesting.
What?
Lmao Joe trying to argue vs facts
dude for real😭... can't forget this podcast is based off of his ignorance though, thats how he profits
Dude's an idiot.
Joe is contradicting a neurologist
Studies show the colder temps make no difference in benefits all ur doing is freezing ur ass off out of ego. Just like ego lifters
lol Joe is a hardo there’s no evidence saying colder is better beyond 50 degrees. Also depends on your tolerance
I wondered that too, surely there's a sweet spot to where it's effective...more isn't always better :D
Exactly, Joe just wants to be "Mr. I am so tough"
joe you might as well take over this guy cant handle the ice bath wow lol
Joe arguing physiology with a neuroscientist. C'mon Joe.
For first time I wanted him to shut up! He has no clue what he is talking about 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
